Telanir 6427 Popular Post Share Posted February 11, 2020 Hello everyone, I’m happy to announce a collaboration between the Community, Moderation, and Admin teams: the Standards for Roleplay Quality. The Admin Team has had long discussions about these guidelines and we unanimously agreed that this is something we need to address. I would also like to offer a special thanks to @Sykogenic for deep contributions in writing & editing the standards. I wrote a tl;dr to help with any possible confusion: Standards only come into play if players have a disagreement, otherwise you’re pretty much free to mess around. Roleplay that takes from another player requires more effort, meaning you must contribute to character development and story. Moderators won’t ban for breaking the standards unless it is reported (or breaks lore or rules obviously). Imperfect roleplay won’t get you banned. We understand that there is a difference between trying but falling short—and straight harmful behaviour. 2 week grace period for minor offences. Initially we got complaints from the community that people were unimpressed with the frequency that they encounter trollplay and one-dimensional uncooperative roleplay. The Community Team got to work and engaged with members of the community to compile a report on roleplay quality. Following this, we got to work drafting roleplay standards in November and now think it’s ready for a test run. Some points of interest we saw were: The difficulty of fair roleplay combat between two people vying for victory. The difficulty of pinpointing what differentiates acceptable roleplay. General comments on poor sportsmanship, memeing, trolling, etc. While we didn’t tackle all of that we chose to start somewhere, and that somewhere is finding out as a community what the quality of roleplay we are aiming for is. What is a standard for roleplay quality? It’s something that when players disagree they can point to in order to resolve an immediate issue. It’s a fluid document that needs to be edited and reshaped as we try it out and eventually settle on the balance between casual and hardcore roleplay that fits best for LotC. This is a significant change, so we want to offer a grace period of 2 weeks from this post where poor behaviour will be warned but not necessarily banned for. This should give most people enough time to adjust and understand what the boundaries are with these new standards. Once the grace period is over we are going to watch reports closely and gauge community response to see if the standards are too harsh or too relaxed. The main concept we’re looking at here is Give and Take, if you make some lighthearted jokes or play a character that’s a bit silly there’s absolutely no problem. At most you risk your own reputation of being a bit of a clown but—tasteful RP will pretty much never get you banned unless you also decide to break rules. We’re not interested in promoting elitism, so be prepared that we will throw out reports that are not warranted. We’re also not going to police new players who are struggling to adjust to our server. But just to be clear, we will not allow troublemakers to take advantage of the fact that new players would rather quit than go through the report system. If someone is found to be driving players away the consequences get amplified. How will these standards be moderated? We’re abiding by the principle that if there’s no complaint, there’s no problem. If it’s not egregious trollplay or rule-breaking then a moderator is not going to intervene on behalf of some vague greater good. However, if you submit a report then we will take action as soon as possible and maintain a response time of 72 hours or faster per case. Thank you, The LotC Staff

Harri 4813 Share Posted February 11, 2020 Glad you guys actually are focussing on role-play after the longest time, on a role-play server, so it’s a pleasant thing to see on the forums. Few things: Roleplay that takes from a player has to contribute character development/story building – I don’t think this very well written or a fair expectation. Whilst I very, very much agree that role-play that aims to take from another person (whether it be the experience playing or a physical item(s) on them) I think that the requisite of ‘character development and story building’ is very vague and a bit much to be expected every single instance. On top of that, a story can only be built and a character developed with the co-operation of both parties, and people don’t take too kindly to being put into a losing position. Over all: glad you’re focussing on low effort ‘me kill u’ rp, just don’t over police it because it’s still a two way street. Moderators won’t ban for it unless it’s reported – What exactly do you mean? Do you mean it won’t be acted on unless a report of an action is actively disrupting the player reporting it? I’m just forseeing possible worst case abuse of this in the future, so would like a clarification before we dive down the rabbit hole. You’re offering a grace period to avoid bans right now – what exactly are you getting at here? Are the bans for this going to be lengthy, serious offences? Whilst I don’t think you should treat purposefully poor roleplay lightly, I also don’t think you should be banning people any more than a week for it, and that’s for repeat offenders. I hope you utilise things like 1 – 3 day bans. Shorter bans inconvenience people rather than dishearten them, and actually convince them to improve in their lacking field. 72 hour response time – actually stick to a time for once, please, especially with your whole ‘new leaf’ thing. Roleplay reports spiral out of control the longer they are left and become more and more troublesome to solve, especially with how lazy moderators have proven to be when it comes to checking logs. Overall – very happy you are trying to promote better roleplay! Just don’t want it to turn into ‘conflict bad !!’.

Blundermore 2733 Share Posted February 11, 2020 There won’t ever be a way to define roleplay into a neatly explained package as the permutations involved in every unique situation would go on into the infinite of possibility. Common sense and co-operative roleplay was always championed in the past, something the newer generation of LOTC must learn once more it seems.
