Cowards die many times before their death

---

World Events:
Time marches on, a year passes, it is now 872

It is a cool winter night, when the Emperor Osmund finally succumbs to his illnesses, injuries, and age. A strong unifying figure many decades prior, without his leadership many doubt the Empire would have remained intact as long as it had. The same is true for the present. With the power vacuum left by the death of the emperor, the empire begins to fracture repaidly. The charismatic prince Oros Rellin, Osmund’s second born son finds support with much of the nobility, and quickly seizes control of the capital along with fragments of the Imperial Army and noble retinues. To the east, prince Clade Rellin, eldest son of Osmund, quickly snatches up the more veteran portions of the Imperial Army, and takes control of several castles and forts along with the former emperor’s chief advisor, Baron Conrad von Augsdorf. While Orev itself it most greatly fractured, many of the elector states also begin to splinter in the wake of a supposed ‘Republic’ forming around the city of Eyowith.

With the Empire in shambles, the Atemic warlord Aeton rallies his legions, and launches an invasion into northern Orev on the justification of reclaiming lands once held by the Atemic Empire many years prior. The invasion does not progress far, however, and only sees a Atemic armies clash minorly with loyalists of Oros Rellin several times.

An Antramarian host under the command of Lord Tarbus once more departs from the capital of Antramar, intent on continuing the war against the Orevian Empire, despite its current condition.

A year for internal turmoil it seems, the clans of Tomak Oburakai, descendants of the legendary Khan Oburai, Scourge of the Jade Sea, face internal troubles of their own. Discontent with the ways of the reigning Khan, Yul, the Oge Khan, a man by the name of Tomorbaatar murdered Yul while he slept. Usually a heinous crime by the clans’ standards, Tomorbaatar’s deeds are largely overlooked, many of the lesser Khans even celebrating it. No Kurultai is held at the site of Yul’s death, and no rites performed, instead, one is held with Tomorbaatar’s horde.

Crimson Order

The Order’s forces march into the Mitrovic empire, laying waste to whatever they lay their hands on. A fortified base to allow for a continued campaign has been constructed, what will follow, who can say?

Amarantic Dominion

The Unfathomable’s patron visits once more… (discord)

Chicahtoc Empire

The ability to bend the blood of others, reducing them to but a vessel for the Chicahtoc to use is appealing to many within the empire. The Shaman get to work at once, and predict they will have a spell capable of controlling individuals or small groups by 874 (T3)

The Grand Principality of Rostukhov

The artificers nearly tear out their hair in pursuit of a more optimized Trebuchet, but they find the design is already suitable and performs its function well.

Samalstraza

While Ala’s services are perhaps desperately accepted by the late emperor Osmund, even she is powerless to stop his rapid decline in health. In fact, her magic appears to do little if anything, even ease his pain. Ala is present when the man finally dies, he croaks about finally embracing the twins and then he dies.. In the after math of the Emperor’s death, Ala and her retinue are not harmed, and the newly proclaimed Emperor Oros offers Abanesh a position within his court, and Ala’s protection, so long as they stay within the capital.

Ala does much good, and heals many in the midlands afflicted with all manner of injuries and illnesses.

Runi Abda finds the most prestigious bachelor within Antramar would be none other than Lord Tarbus himself, though many describe him as a violent and brutal man, there is no contesting the fact that the King Savos has granted the man much favor within his court.

Megura and her exiles find little notable work in the lands of Alean, apart from acting as guards for small merchant caravans, if they wish

Spells:
Light (T3) Judgement - While one of the desired aspects of the spell proves to be possible, the other does not. ‘It can be used in long duration to see any who may bear the caster ill-will, even through solid objects, however, the nature of such objects may reduces this effect, or cause it to be more energy-demanding’ (874)

The ‘Hex-Flect’ Barrier (T2) will be prepared for 873

Ley bomb (T3) - the caster generates a plsing ball of magical energy within his hands, channelling as much power as they desire into it. They can then “throw” the ball in whichever direction they choose, detonating it on command. (874)

Pachaqui Kingdom

The King and his retinue arrive at the great capital of Ak.. (discord)

Mitrovic Empire

The war rages…

The Kingdom of Kastovia

The wedding between Prince John and Princess Milena is held in Barowitz, however the Krolestwoans seem slightly insulted by the Kastovian lack of funding, and instead pitch in a hefty sum of coin to make the occasion more fitting for someone of their princess’ standing.

Infrastructure within the city of Barowitz sees a great deal of improvement, by the year’s end, most of the roads within the city’s walls have been properly paved, or repaved, as well as many of the roads in the immediate vicinity of the city

The King’s League, already very popular, continues to grow outside of Barowitz itself.

Perasmani League

While the expeditions do not meet any resistance, they do not uncover anything especially significant either. The ships and their explorers sail along the wide rivers, observing the natural beauty of the land. The Perasmani also produce several maps of the regions, which are the first of their kind, as far as they know.

Salazar’s campaign is largely successful. While journeying through the Sea of Chtor, he makes numerous contacts and meets many of the most influential merchants and producers within the region. Overall, he is less lucky in Aeton, where much of the populace looks down on him. (+1 Charisma)

To the east, many more reports of the infamous purple-sailed ships reach the League’s ears. In fact, it seems apparent a fleet, presumably belonging to the allegeded pirates which have devastated Maeya, is amassing, or even sailing directly towards the League’s eastern most isle.. (discord)

Year 872

The Chiquimutan Mountains were quiet guardians as they have been in the eons past, watching the land, unmoving. But on and around them, on tall peaks and deep valleys, the Chimuquera prospered and will continue to prosper. A people native and used to the high altitudes they were always in pursuit of bettering the world for them, to not squander the gift of life and ingenuity that Mama-Pacha has given them. Terrace farms, aqueducts, mountain roads, tunnels through solid rock where passage around or over would be too difficult or even impossible. Just minor achievements under the everlasting gaze of Papa-Inti.

Archpriest Solameqan sits quietly outside the massive stone palace on one of the terraces looking out, to the bustling city below and then beyond. What could be at the edge of the horizon? The King was South, to his back, but he did not turn around to look after his former pupil who has outgrown his tutelage years ago, no. He was watching the back of the King and held his post until he returned. For this past year and perhaps even the next he must lead the Chimuquera, be wise and just in the decisions to make, but continue the path of progress and prosperity that young Thonaqan is pursuing. “Young, heh. Twentynine and still not married. An heir must be born soon or his holy lineage of the Micchuqui the founding fathers of the Chimuquera might extinguish. Forever.” the Archpriest Solameqan ponders.

Earlier he received the delegations from both the Crimson Order and the Mitrovic Empire, both seeking the favor of the king, offering the hands of princesses. “Certainly suitable for the King. But nobody could tell what Thonaqan is thinking. Perhaps Tuqua could, but he left along with his friend.” The Archpriest thinks. “And I am sitting here, getting older and growing moss.” – “Master Archpriest?” a young voice behind him proclaimed. It was Monopi Loyoqu, one of the acolytes under his tutelage. He has shown promise in mastering the gifts of Mama-Pacha and that is why Solameqan has chosen him. “Yes son?” – “Our training was due to start an hour ago, Master Archpriest.” – “Already an hour late? I am getting forgetful... well, we must not dawdle. Let us begin at once, to the temple courtyard!” Solameqan exclaims and springs up from the stone bench he has been sitting on. Youth was still left in him, so why not use it once in a while?

In the distance a bird was watching, chirping its happy tune.

Actions:

As per decree of the young King, new farmland must be prepared to acommodate the growing demand of food by the steadily growing population. So far the Chimuquera had no issue with their nutrition, but the King does not intend to have it become a matter. (-27,000 Quti for 6 farms)

As per decree of the Archpriest, two new settlements are established. One to the East where new holdfasts were built just years earlier, the other straight North at the coast, with the goal in mind to turn it into a prosperous trade city for the Kingdom, where merchants from overseas may dock before heading further inland. (-27,000 Quti for 2 Towns)

The newly established city in the South, Mataqachi receives its own merchant district and trade depot for in and outgoing commerce. Along with it come two new Civilian Districts to house local craftsmen and other peaceful enterprise. (-18,000 Quti for a tradedepot and a Commercial District & -13,500 Quti for 2 Civilian Districts)

To ascertain the safety of the settlement at the Northern coast, a new Keep is order for construction nearby as well. Whilst there are sufficient soldiers sent along, a more permanent military presence might be most convenient. (-2 AP & 8,000 Quti for 1 Keep)

The Kingdom of Pachaqui, in the name of King Thonaqan Micchuqui, sends out missives to the surrounding realms, specifically to Antramar, Kastovia, Aldemaric League, Tomuk Oburakai, Ardes, Ishikawa, Crimson Order, Mitrovic Empire and Krolestwo. The missive inquires and invites regarding the potential of a marriage of a suitable princess to the King, who is still unwed to this day. Negotiations may take place in regards to this. (Everyone)

King Thonaqan takes a sizeable amount of Quti along with him on his journey to the South. (-3,000 Quti)

The remaining Quti, rectangular chips of gold are being stored in the treasury of Osocchi Appachaqui, in order to save it for the coming year, where coin might become much more needed. (-8,200 Quti)

Rapid winds can cause duststorms. But instead of relying on winds with the power of will grains of sand might be moved with a lack of them. A magical sandstorm is the goal of the new magical pursuits of the Archpriest, something to conceal movement or hinder enemy advances. (Passive, started 872)

Past Magic Studies:

As the impaling spikes spell is concluded the next project for the priests of the Chimuquera is to elaborate on a spell that may mend cracks and damages in stone, as well as reinforce it against impacts and further damage through tremors, impacts and other less mundane means. Reinforce Stone and Earth shall it be named. (Passive, started 868, due in 872 as T2; now concluded)

In the meantime, the Archpriest Solameqan orders the exploration of the gifts of Mama-Pacha, the powers she has bestowed upon the Chimuquera. The subject shall be the rapid formation of rock spikes out of the ground in a straight line from the caster, to impale approaching enemies. Whilst it seems cruel, it is essential that the Chimuqueran people have the means to protect themselves properly. (Passive study, year 4, due 868; now concluded)

KINGDOM OF KASTOVIA

Ruler: HRM, King Sigismund IV of Kastovia

Population: 12,298,740 (next: 12,667,702)

Starting Points: 10 Size, 10 Army, 6 Tech, 5 Loyalty

Trade Partners (10): Ardes, Crimson Order, Samalstraza, Krolestwo, Perasma, Rhorric, Khrav, Pachaqui, Ishikawa, Mitrovic

“She has every right to sit upon this council!” contested Prince John, “Just as much as father’s cronies. She is to be the future queen-consort of Kastovia.” Of course, John was referring to his wife, the Princess Milena of Krolestwo, who quietly sat beside her husband - not quite yet assimilated into the Kastovian court. There was some anger boiling within her, ready to blow.

John’s mother, Queen Anastasia, scowled - having turned quite bitter in the recent years. “There are such sit-ins, but this is not one of them. We don’t even know-”

“And what do we discuss here that is so confidential?” her son retorted.

During this entire time, King Sigismund sat at the opposing end of the council table, looking on with a hint of amusement. He’d figure he’d let his son speak for some time - letting him defend himself would make himself stronger and less reliant on his own absolute word. For when John would become King, it would be his speechcraft alone to negotiate treaties, hold court, and convince others of the rationality of his cause. Similarly, the other advisors, of military, financial, or interior, looked on.

Sir Adrian looked increasingly uncomfortable, being one of Sigismund’s ‘cronies’ that John spoke about - offering no more than his sword to the table.

At last the Princess Milena stood up and defended her position, “With all due respect.” she began, with everyone knowing the contrary, “However countless many years ago, you sat in the position of I - a stranger to a foreign court, with few to call friend, and arousing the suspicion of all. The least you can do is show solidarity with a fellow woman as opposed to dismissing my presence and berating me at every turn, Your Majesty. It is my duty as the blood of Lusatia to execute the will of my father - which is to bind our great countries in unison. Whether you like it or not, I’ll be here to stay.” Haughtily, she grasped the side of her dress, setting them forward as she took her seat again.

John was impressed, having not expected such ferocity of his newly-wed. Indeed, he had expected his wife to be meek and soft-spoken - no hint of such fire occurring during their courtship.

The Finance Minister Martin Baluch also could not have expected such an ordeal - the whole meeting having originally been called to discuss the budget for the improving the Royal City and her palace. Opposite of him, the ever dark Black Baron, Andre Dimarczyk, attempted to suppress his chuckling - having not seen anyone stand up to the ‘old hag’ - especially a woman, in some time.

“Right.” King Sigismund said, adjusting the crown upon his shaven, shiny head. “Dear,” he turned to his wife, “Please, she is our daughter now. All that she asks is that you treat her like such. Though she may not carry our blood - her children will. And will you look upon them with similar contempt? No.” he said, casting his gaze across the table, offering a supportive nod and smile to his son and daughter-in-law.

The Queen Anastasia, with all seemingly against her, yielded. Collecting herself, she spoke, “You’re right, forgive me.”

A moment of awkward silence followed, despite how proud Sigismund was of his John and Milena, only to be broken by the old sage Baluch’s intervention, “So… regarding the budget…”

The Ishikawa Shogunate

From the window of a nondescript carriage, dark eyes watched the road ahead. They needn’t have bothered - few wanted to take this route these days. In the distance, a small keep sat on a hill, and the smoke of campfires was all around it. Levies being raised. Best to stay clear.

The carriage was bound west, crossing the border into the shattered Orevian empire. Its passenger had obtained it just the day before, freely given by some pathetic lord who thought he was being chivalrous. It was a waste of money, of course - the passenger could have easily bought one herself, and she had already forgotten the man’s name.

With a shudder, the coach reached a fork in the road and turned to the south, away from the keep in the distance. No one stopped it, not guards and certainly not tax collectors. Soon enough the lines would be drawn, and borders would become more hazardous places, but not now. Now the chaos had the whole empire drowning in confusion. The passenger drew her gaze away from the window, knowing she was safe for now.

Eyowith, she thought. That would be best for her. In Eyowith the weight of tradition was weakest, the rule of law most malleable. At the very least there would be wealth to be made there, but more than that, passions were always highest at the start of such an enterprise. Passion, the passenger found, always seemed to work in her favor.

A shadow fell over the coach as the sun dipped below a mountain, and still the horses trotted onwards. Soon enough the chance would be lost, like a delicious pear rotting in the sun. The coach would not stop, and the passenger rested happily, knowing Eyowith would soon enough be at her feet.

In the city of Eyowith she hires a house and wastes no time in gathering her usual crowd of simps, for in war there’s opportunity, and the ***** of Akita looks forward to a diverting few years at least.

Samalstraza

Death had not stolen his eyes, and Ergûl watched the pale boy as he crept across the field, his back bent as if burdened by some great, invisible weight. He stood as still as a statue until the boy was only a few meters away before stepping forward. He opened his mouth, a thin, rasping sound escaping his mangled lips.

The boy looked up.

Ergûl lifted a hand, palm towards the boy. He shook his head, though he did not smile. With a face like his, it was as terrifying as it was calming, and either way, it would not have been genuine.

“Who are you?” asked the boy, crouching low, a dagger in his hand.

Ergûl tapped the medallion dangling from his neck. Rust had bitten it down, and he had burnished it, until it was as thin as cloth.

“A Thrice Chosen?” said the boy, switching to flawless ninûrian. He spoke well, but his accent was old, curiously outdated.

Ergûl nodded, and gestured at the boy, tilting his head to the side. But the boy only looked more curious, so curious that he took a step forward. “How did you know we were of Samalstraza?” he asked.

We? Was that how they addressed themselves now? He tapped his eyes, dry and dead, with his fingers, then shrugged.

Then, the boy’s eyes widened. “We know of you, Ergûl. You are spoken off within Nergal’s Gloam.”

But who was left to speak of him, when the darkness had been so thoroughly purged by those above? “You were treated poorly by Samalstraza. As we were,” said the boy. He took another step forward, like a trainer around a new lion. Ergûl followed him with his eyes. “We too were cast aside, left to rot.” he gestured at Ergûl’s face. “Come with us. We will give you purpose.”

To map the stars and the world. With their new telescope, the Samalstrazi turn their eyes to the horizons and the skies above them. They begin to perfect the art of mapmaking and stargazing.

Actions

Runivera, using her newly gained influence as the first lady in waiting to the Queen, continues to build ties within the Antramarian court. She begins to attempt trading favors and using some of the education gained in Samalstraza to scout out the potential for a profitable wine-making business. Not only that, but she continues to build tight ties, and as a socialite, she attempts to gather gossip and drift from party to party, building connections and trading favors as she goes.

Absanesh thanks the Emperor Oros for his offer, and assures him that he will return, when his duties to Samalstraza have been fulfilled. Though he does not say it, he now goes to Antramar, to accomplish his directives…

Alâ, however, remains in the northern Midlands along with an escort of fifteen Thrice Chosen. Empowered by Nîm Peradin, the newly crafted spell that allows her to heal all those around her at a passive, if slower rate, she continues to travel the battlefields and villages, clad in white, escorted by steel, she heals the wounded on every side of the newly exploding war. She does not bind herself to Samalstraza, and if asked, simply says she is Alâ, sent here by the light, to illuminate the shadows.

THE CHORANIC EMPIRE

bff8f6454c310f96538262342e047855.png

The cogs and wheels that drive Kūraušahr continue to turn this year, though with a considerable shift in focus towards its seaborne capabilities. The Ishikawans, with their penchant for the sea, had grown to be seen as a natural ally in the court of the very much land-based Empire against the many obstacles to Artaxes’ ambitions. The King of Kings had therefore sought to establish a formal alliance with the Shogunate, and they happily accepted – the Mehrkarta Pact is signed by the King of Kings and the Shogun this year, 872.

With the signing of the treaty, the shipyards and drydocks across the entire Shogunate are leased to the Empire for the year. In these, eight carracks and a transport ship are constructed and put to sea by the end of the year – more than doubling the amount of vessels in the Empire’s quickly growing navy. Though not the year’s priority, the army is by no means ignored, with the first contingent of cavalry joining Imperial ranks. The 1,000 horsemen are trained to the highest standard, and provided with the finest horses the Empire can muster. Most of the foundries and smithies of the Empire commit to fulfilling a large commission for military equipment from the Kastovians of the Midlands.

The quickly growing military – and population – of Kūraušahr also provoke the King of Kings into continuing the land reclamation in the Olk-Wood, with fields being plowed and irrigation trenches dug in the hinterlands of the blossoming forest town of Sebzegal.

Meanwhile, with the diplomatic muscles being flexed, primarily Enjili nobles are sent out as diplomats to the tribes of the Olk-Wood and the coastal prairies on its borders. For now, they come as permanent envoys, here to liaise with and counsel (if they would have it) the chiefs and petty kings on behalf of the King of Kings.

The King’s diplomats have settled on anything between 50k and 100k for the purchasing of the Chapter’s far eastern territories. They remain free and open for any counter offers. Atreus paced side to side between the blanched pillars that led into the guild hall before him, his hands tucked behind the small of his back grasping at one another as he waited for… something. Judging by the lone droplet of sweat across his brow it had been some time since he arrived, and thus quite some time that he had been left waiting in the blazing sun that hung above. Several more minutes passed before a robed figure stepped out from the doorway of the guildhall, beckoning the Archon into the building with a wave of their draped arm. Atreus followed anxiously, staying close behind the cloaked figure as they made their way into the hall. Dozens of doors lined either side of the main hall, the sounds of voices and otherworldly discombobulated noises came from the other sides of the doorways although no one else seemed to be in the hall. After ascending a spiral of stairs leading up the hall, the pair arrived at a singular doorway at the top of the stairs; no other halls nor doors were there as the staircase led to this singular door.

He awaits you; within.” The cloaked figure spoke, as if musing with the Archon before him as if there were any mystery to the man who was behind the doorway. Atreus nodded once, then stepped into the room. The smell of minerals was heavy, the most pungent being the waft of rotten eggs that swirled about the room. The Archon brought his hand up towards his mouth, stifling a gag before stepping further into the room and letting out a muffled call. “Cormac! By the Ire what are you up to in here?”

The shrewd, dainty frame of the man they called “The Hung” appeared from a sideroom within the laboratory, his face partially covered by a thick, dampened cloth that had been tied around his head. Although his lips were covered, the welcoming smile in his eyes was all but impossible to notice as he set eyes on the Archon. “Ahh! Ph-e wa’ wo’derin’ when you’d come!” The robed mage said as he walked towards Atreus, then suddenly turned about to retrieve something from the room; a dampened cloth for the Archon, which he politely refused with a wave of his hand.

You wanted to see me here… Who is this ‘we’?” The Archon asked as Cormac took the cloth back, sliding off his own to speak more clearly. The mage nodded lightly and then turned over his shoulder to speak back to the room he had come from. “Pytheas, come-come! The Archon is here!” He then turned back to the Archon to motion him over to a nearby set of wooden stools and a table littered with glassware and what seemed to be failed experiments shoved into a corner of the table judging by the shattered pile of glass that had been tucked away. “You want to explore, no? I have no better of a man! The Robust, Pytheas Atratnos!” Out from the doorway stepped a man who approached the pair, partially preoccupied with cleaning his hands from a pale yellow dust before he approached.

The Robust certainly was an appropriate name for the man. Standing nearly a foot taller than the already average-framed Archon, and certainly several stones heavier, it almost seemed as if the floorboards beneath him were about to give out after each one of his heaving steps. The sheer girth of the man was something before unseen by Atreus with his own eyes as he came closer. Although the layered robes the man wore were somewhat misleading of his true size beneath, it was abundantly clear that he was by far the largest man on the island, even rivalling the size and ego of the :goyim: Salazar.

Atreus gave a small look to Cormac for a moment, who was almost giddy with excitement as he could finally show off his peer to the Archon. “He’ll do.” Atreus muttered in approval. Whether it was out of his trust in the mage’s judgment or in fear of denying and having his rib cage collapsed by the giant was even unknown to himself.
