The Eye of Vaasek, as seen upon a prophet’s hand during a vision of what may come.

Origin/Backstory

Spoiler

The Material Plane plays a unique role in the cosmic orchestra. The largest individual realm within the Veil, and the favoured child of the Creator, life upon it is intrinsically ordered in contrast with the countless volatile stars and worlds which pepper the heavens.

Whilst it is true our world remains subject to the phenomenon recorded as ‘Gap Theory’, the lands inhabited by bulk descendant kind - chiefly the present continent upon which the Descendant diaspora resides as well as the Aildinic supercontinent - are blessed with constants in space and time.

Other realms, and uninhabited parts of the Material Plane, are less lucky. Time is especially volatile upon the larger realms of the cosmos such as Ebrietas, Stargush’Stroh and Moz Strimoza. An interesting thing occurs, then, when individuals pass between these realms.

The souls of the damned and blessed alike pass through Ebrietas as a direct consequence of Aeriel’s tampering with the Soulstream, whilst the aforementioned realms are oft the final resting place for the souls of Descendants and others desired or damned by their relative inhabitants, before tampered with by mortalkind in their own practices.

The lack of consistency in time upon these worlds often falls out of synch with the time-constant spheres of Descendant settlements. Thoughts that have yet to be conjured in a living man’s mind may sometimes slip through the soul-stream in dreams and intense concentration; the world is under constant scrutiny and discussion from the otherwise unoccupied dead, fueling gossip and prediction. Whilst a soul can never reside upon multiple planes at once, elements of its psyche can - on occasion - be stretched between, as a consequence of a unique scenario:

When one’s mind and soul is exposed to the thoughts of Immortal beings, and the scattered souls of descendant-kind, there is a chance - albeit slim - for wisdom to spit back. In dreams and waking visions, the psychic few are exposed to these could-bes and maybe-some-days gossiped about throughout the soulstream’s cosmic path, creating prophets upon our world.

Quite unlike the hypotheses theorised by Cognats of yore, these prophecies are less like predictions for what might happen, and more dreamy memories that have yet to occur, if ever.

Details
The secrets of the future are not constant. Ever changing and impossible to truly assure oneself of, these ripples of volatile knowledge are carried as whispers amongst honourable souls and Spirits of Stargush’Stroh, the malformed Infernals and damned souls of Moz Strimoza, Aeriel’s favoured in her Golden City and Her damned in the wider wastes of Ebrietas. Sometimes, these whispers reach the minds of living Descendants, through Shamanicpacts, malefic incantations or idle exchanges with the dead, and prophecies are born.

Either to come true by the will of higher powers, to be self-fulfilled by overcautious descendants, ignored or otherwise forgotten and made redundant by the passage of time, these prophecies invade the minds of those cursed with True Sight through the murmuring dead, are delivered to the knowledge-thirsty Naztherak during their beckoncalls to Moz Strimoza or are handed by the Spirits beneath Kor to Farseers eager to listen.

It is Vaasek however, the Daemon of Anxiety and Fallacy who most maliciously involves itself. Never interfering with what visions are seen, and playing no part in the process of procuring these secrets bar siphoning them through his Seers, the clandestine Daemon lurks in the corners of every vision as a paranoid spectator, manifesting as an eye in the palm of any prophet’s hand during their visions (be they in a complete dream state or otherwise). Via his unwitting servants, the Seers, does he channel these visions, sewing fear and paranoia amongst his flock in a drive to witness more of these could-be futures through them.

Red Lines

Spoiler

-At the time of this lore, receiving a Prophecy to the extents established above (anything more than a mere IC dream or prediction) requires characters to have an accepted application in either Seers of Vaasek, Naztherak, Farseeing, Vivification or Mysticism with knowledge of the Hexing ability. More magics may later be added if justification for prophecies is given in their respective lore and approved by the lore team.

-Prophecies are not strictly bound to come true. They are interpretations of futures that might be or pasts that could have been, subject to either player or Event intervention in actually causing them to be fulfilled.

-The eyes of Vaasek will appear upon the palms of prophetic individuals to themselves during visions, though will never physically manifest for others to see.

-Vaasek’s presence is never outright recognised by prophetic individuals; the Daemon keeps entirely to itself and exists only as a spectator, never making itself known. Any instance in which Vaasek is noted as a result of these visions would be deemed metagaming.

-Prophecies can not include currently living player characters unless express OOC consent is given from the individual playing them. This is with the exceptions of ‘famous’ historic figures and prominent lore characters (what constitutes ‘famous characters’ in these examples is left up to ST-Writer interpretation) and of information being relayed in a Prophecy seen by an individual (not publicly posted) that is already possessed by that prophetic character anyway.

-Prophecies seen by an individuals alone can not possess information that wouldn’t be held by that character unless said information is OOCly approved for use by the relative parties (IE information as to a potential future involving an event would require the consent of an event team member, futures involving otherwise secret information about a character such as their magics, relationships and so on would require the player behind it’s OOC consent, etc). In this regard, hearing OOCly that X character intends to kill Y character would not be justification for a ‘prediction’ that a murder would be attempted, unless the player behind X character allows for that to be RP’d.

-Prophecies meant to be seen by multiple individuals must be posted on the ‘Roleplay’ subforum for all prophetic characters to see, titled [Prophecy] <title> so that any prophetic character wishing to involve themself can recognise it.

-Prophecies meant to be seen by multiple individuals operate on an ‘all or nothing’ basis; either the same prophecy can be seen by anyone wishing to RP it, or it can be seen as the individual who came up with it.

-Prophecies can not be physical shown to another, only described or sought out by another prophetic individual.

-Visions can come at any moment, either during palm readings, shuffling tarot cards, dreams, ritualistic ceremonies or vacant stares into crystal balls. They may come at or against a character’s will, left to the interpretation of the player.

-Any player may post a Prophecy, following the prior rules and restrictions.

Purpose

Spoiler

The purpose behind this lore is to flesh out and legitimise the much demanded niches of fortune tellers, soothsayers and prophets (that until this point have been exclusively RPable as delusional individuals rambling about their dreams) by allowing them a means of sharing potential versions of the future amongst themselves and also serving as a new means of creating roleplay for characters these psychics are in the employ of, who might opt to try and make true or undo the versions of the future told to them.

It should be noted people opting to continue RPing as delusional prophets without a desire to involve themselves in Seer, or any other referenced lore group, won’t be forced to stop; their RP will remain entirely unchanged.

The lore is also intended to act as a vehicle for Story-Event staff to submit their own [Prophecy] posts in order to foreshadow new events or later stages in current events to encourage broader player involvement in staff-run storylines.

Lastly, it has been a longstanding hope of mine to integrate various areas of LoTC lore for achieving the same purpose. The decision was made to style this as World Lore as it’s something I don’t feel should necessarily be monopolised by a singular group’s magic or creature lore, incorporating multiple areas of prior established soul lore and leaving the door open for new magics to also involve themselves.

As well as all this, I had hoped to breathe new life into Zarsies’ Seer and Gap Theory lore pieces. Much credit also goes out to Zarsies in particular for his work and for helping me develop this idea months ago, initially intending for his own brand of fortune-teller lore that never saw the light of day.

Wait, why do you need lore to think you’re a fortune teller?

unironically based and i agree 100%

stop using lore to try and justify your roleplay to forum ascended librarians that use ooc means to justify their characters mindsets.

You don’t need lore to think you’re anything.

But if you want multiple people to share a prophecy in your current version, those characters need to interact directly and know each other,  meaning prophecies can’t transcend OOC barriers and create RP for others in different places, factions and magic groups. There’s also no means of RPing prophecies involving information your character doesn’t already possess or have the capacity to ‘make up’ without straight meta gaming in the current system, a big part of why fortune teller RP is so scarcely done.

This is also serves the lesser purpose of legitimising Event prophecies and bridging the gaps between sever Canon.

This lore wouldn’t suddenly stop people from making it up as they go along and claiming to be fortune tellers, it just gives them more legitimacy if they opt to involve themselves in other areas of RP

I get what this lore is meant to do but at the same time, I find this taking something that anyone/group can RP and/or provide approved events for and restricting it down to these specific magics. It's rather odd to me really reading this though it definitely is an interesting take on prophecies . The iffy part for me however is the allowing of character information easily gained from this. (even with OOC consent).

I feel like this piece of lore is more likely to invalidate RPers who would rather not have to rely on magic and lore in order to RP. Seems to be a redundant piece that does to add anything to the table except reinforcing someone's own RP through lore. Just as the Ascended attempted to do when they tried to write reincarnation lore.

Except nowhere does it say “you can’t keep doing your improv fortune teller rp”.

This lore doesn’t strip anyone of anything, and the argument that it ‘invalidates’ individuals doesn’t really hold up when the vague entity you’re defending is – I’m assuming – people that have been RPing loreless cultural and religious prophecies, which are inherently without need for ‘validation’ as the products of IC beliefs and wouldn’t be stripped or impacted by this lore.

i understand the place you’re coming from to an extent, but I feel like you’re overlooking the fact this piece solely exists to add new elements of RP for facilitating events and future predictions that can then be shared by more means than word of mouth.

From my angle all it does is add a new method of RP that otherwise couldn’t have been done with current lore; nothing is being taken from anyone. That said your feedback is noted and I’ve tried to make this a little clearer by rewording parts of the ‘Purpose’ section:

Could you shed a little more light on what you mean by this, please? Maybe a worst-case scenario you think could arise, so I can adjust the redlines accordingly?

The lore itself reinforces the RP of those who are capable of using this, whilst also delegitimizing the RP of those who don't. That is simply a fact of the matter with no arguement around it. Simply, if an individual chooses not to opt into using this, then they start off at a disadvantage compared to groups who do decide to use this mechanism. The products of IC beliefs are impacted by this lore, as anyone capable of actually seeing prophecies has a mechanical benefit that translates into RP. Sure, it doesn't prevent people from being fortune tellers, but it does put them at a mechanical disadvantage than they otherwise would be.

Agree, and this also ties into the fact that from now on, to be a legitimate fortuneteller you would need to put in a magic application in order to use any of the powers he’s stated.

I would argue that the accepted Magics listed in this lore (which lead to visions already) legitimise them over general RP visions anyway.

The argument that this would be superior is baseless; the Magics that grant visions are already at an advantage.

This Lore has been accepted. Moved to Implemented Lore, it will be sorted to it's appropriate category soon. Please note that if this is playable lore, such as a magic or CA, you will need to write a guide for this piece. You will be contacted regarding the guide (or implementation if it isn’t needed) shortly.
