Port of Exit
Óscar and Valeria set off for a better tomorrow
Tired of the eternal strife, and the sleepless nights
In the footsteps of millions of migrants they followed
Hoping only to live a better life, to reach higher heights

 

And so they marched towards the future, freedom bound 
Hoping only to escape their abuser, and this battleground
Risking their lives in the pursuit of happiness
Their reward? Hatred, vitriol, and death’s bitter kiss

 

So close to their prize, almost having passed freedom’s door
Their future just over the horizon -- stolen by a wanton tidal pour
With their heads underwater, they dreamed of America no more
If that were you and your daughter, would you not try to cross the shore?

Death, Tomorrow
One day burial will be boring
There will be a number of options instead
Clever novel ways of body disposing
Expensive ways to rid ourselves of the dead

 

Some will bury their brains in microchips
Living a life in virtual paradise for infinity
Til of course the company they paid's stock dips
And then someone comes to unplug their computer city

 

Some will send out spacebound sarcophagi
Others will be intentionally fossilized
But a handful will choose to pass these by
With no hope of being reatomized

 

Theirs will be a new sort of suicide
Saying no to that tantalizing possibility
That one day the stars will be aligned
And some futurist will revive them wholly

 

It is the choice to live a life full and true
Accepting and cherishing our mortality
Choosing to die through and through
Gives life its value and finality

Only bipeds in the bathroom
And no kittens in the kitchen
