[✗] [Alchemy] Elillen'ame - Primal Alchemy of the Mali'ame

The most wide-spread image that comes to mind when the word ‘alchemy’ is uttered is that of a mad scientist, rambling away about equations explaining the universe. Descendants furthermore think of expansive libraries, containing books filled with foreign symbols only understood by few scientists. They also imagine large, advanced labs containing sophisticated devices. What most who imagine this don’t realize, however, is that alchemy is something far beyond this limiting stereotype. It is a universal area and study, which has been performed throughout history without modern theories about the material alphabet and reality. From these various applications within such a field, one culture demonstrated a unique, primal and naturalistic interpretation of this interesting study.

Elillen’ame

Gift of the Forest

“Only a foolish man doubts the blessings that come from the natural world.”

The ancient Seeds of Mali’ame lived nomadic, primal lives. These tribes were far more intelligent than what Descendants tend to give them credit for, however. Of course, they lived lives much different than advanced societies and Descendants who were librarians, scientists, and wizards. But when it came to the natural world, few societies understood it as deeply as they did. The forests were sacred to Mali’ame life, and from this knowledge came several practices that aided in their survival. Mali’ame medicine men and wise women utilized herbs to create salves, balms, teas, and infusions to heal their people. Furthermore, they employed some of these herbs in more advanced, sacred practices; what they regarded as Elillen’ame, or The Gift of the Forest. Oral stories of this ancient, primal art were passed on within the Seeds to the modern age, although the true origins of these stories were severely disregarded. Some Mali believed it was simply Druidism, others believed it was a lost gift from the Aspects or the Mani. Still, some humans throughout history who caught glimpses of this art believed it was witchcraft, only adding to their modern religious belief of Mali’ame being savages and witches.

With the recent establishment of an apothecary in the Mali’ame village known as Siramenor, the modern medicine men and wise women of various Seeds gathered together to teach each other natural medicine and to employ it on their people. They shared their folktales, legends, and personal remedies and learned that the stories of Elillen’ame were not mere fairy tales. Instead, they discovered that their ancestors developed an early practice of alchemy. As opposed to distillation apparatus, ovens, and modern tools however; these potions and trinkets were made through much more primal means such as pestle & mortars, cauldrons, and campfires. From this acquired knowledge, a collection of potions were re-discovered, once long-lost but in plain sight to their people.

Cerridwen’s Tears

[T2]

[ST Signature Not Required]

-

Bearing the curse of infertility, the wise women of Mali’ame tribes often sought out various properties within herbs that could potentially help their fellow women become pregnant. Using what they had discovered in alchemical herbs, they attempted to create a potion to cure their infertility. They could not find a way to remove their curse, however they found something helpful to pregnant mothers regardless. A potion that assisted with the development of an infant, prevented miscarriage, and that helped position an infant correctly just prior to labor.

Twenty Red Raspberry Leaves

One Hatched Eggshell

Process

Spoiler

Prepare the symbols as per the mundane extraction process. Spring water may be used in the extraction process instead of aqua vitae for this potion in particular. Boil spring water in a large vessel, traditionally in a cauldron. Dry and grind the raspberry leaves into a powder, stir into the boiling water. Add each processed reagent, stirring once after each addition. Powder the eggshell and stir in. Continue to boil down until only 12 fluid ounces of the liquid remains. This amount will be indicated when the mixture takes on a bright teal color. Prick the finger of a woman, and allow a drop of blood to fall into the cauldron. After this is done, the teal liquid will take on a vague glimmer. Bottle and store.

Effects

Spoiler

This potion can be dosed in two different strengths. All twelve ounces can be drank, which is considered a full dose. Four ounces when administered is instead an effective low dose. When a low dose is imbibed, the development of a fetus in a pregnant woman is effectively supported. Three doses evenly spread across a pregnancy will heavily reduce the chances of miscarriage, preterm labor and birth defects. It also provides the fetus with multiple nutrients it requires to keep it developing as healthy as possible. A full dose when imbibed corrects the position of a breech fetus within the womb. After it is drank, it will take thirty narrative minutes for the fetus to fully reposition itself into the correct position. This is a very painful process for the mother.

Waters of Ame’lie

[T1]

[St Signature Required]

-

Ame’lie have long been a constant part of Mali’ame life. These specific types of trees provide tools for crafting, food for nourishment, and flowers for Tiva and pigments; all while having little impact on the environment, as opposed to farming. Some Mali’ame Seeds, instead of breeding trees over the span of years or nurturing rare trees, found a way to create their own. One of these was an alchemical potion that allowed them to merge together the seeds of any tree that bears fruit. With this invention, a Seed could be entirely provided with a varied diet from a singular tree.

Tree sap

Carrier oil of any kind

Connection x3

Grace x1

Growth x1

Process

Spoiler

Prepare the symbols as per the mundane extraction process. Rain water may be used in the extraction process instead of aqua vitae for this potion in particular. Mix the pure reagent powders together into a carrier oil, and allow it to infuse for three narrative months. Mix this oil infusion into the tree-sap, and then apply to up to ten fruit tree seeds.

Effects

Spoiler

Up to ten fruit tree seeds can be clustered together, and when the potion is poured over them, they would begin to morph together. Their surfaces would then cling and bind together, becoming a single seed of a jagged shape consisting of the shapes of each seed. When this seed is planted and watered, a tree would proceed to grow- Its stem appearing to be intertwined by various types of woods relative to the seeds used to create the pseudo-seed. This wood fused to each other, but could still be distinguishable from the other sections of the trunks. Similarly, each branch from this tree bore the matching relative leaves and fruits. Much like grafting, although more effective, the tree will produce every fruit from each seed utilized. Each singular tree fused together grew at the same rate it would have grown normally, and still would require the same conditions to grow as it would normally. This means that if a tree accustomed to a cold climate is merged with a warm climate tree and planted in a warm climate, the cold climate section of the conjoined tree will still wilt and die as it would have normally, however the other sections of the tree would still appear fine. If communed with through Druidism, it seemed as if it were a singular tree, both mundane and healthy.

Hamatsa’s Charm

[T3]

[ST Signature Required]

-

Mali’ame have practiced herbal healing from their earliest days. After discovering that a few specific herbs could be used together to induce a sense of calmness, the medicine men and wise women created a charm from them, believing that Hamatsa, the Dolphin Goddess of Healers, had blessed the herbs herself. This charm was hung in healing huts to soothe the spirits of all present, limiting the chaos and distractions of unsettled and fearful wounded, as well as loved ones of the wounded.

One pearl

Object for suspension (wind chime, dream catcher, hanging string, etc)

Process

Spoiler

Prepare the symbols as per the mundane extraction process. Mix the pure powdered reagents into rain water, and the mixture will begin to gently ripple continuously with no cause. Submerge the pearl within. Allow it to infuse over the course of three narrative days, marked by when the rippling stops, and remove the pearl. Suspend this pearl wherever the effect is desired.

Effects

Spoiler

When the pearl is fashioned to suspend in the air, its properties begin to display. In the surrounding fifteen metre/block radius, Descendants would feel a noticeable wave of calmness wash over them. This is not feasible to prevent an attack or pre-meditated violence, moreover it cannot force someone into “passiveness.” It can help prevent chaos and stress if one allows the calming effect to wash over them, but may not be used to force an end to violence/combat. Note that the pearl must be suspended somehow by itself or in a wind chime, dream catcher, etc., and cannot spread the effect while hanging on someone’s person, for example.

Whispers of Solitude

[T2]

[ST Signature Not Required]

-

The Mali’ame tribes shun the use of farms. They flatten the land, introduce foreign species to ecosystems, and reduce the fertility of the soil. This is the reason for their Ame’lie, however there are still some herbs that Mali’ame have cultivated over the years besides these unique trees. Healers, artists, and cooks all required their own herbs and plants. They kept these gardens small, however the risk of the foreign plants spreading into the forests they don’t belong in was still high. Practicers of Elillen’ame developed a potion for this exact problem; allowing their tribes to grow their own plants without them becoming invasive to their own forests, without causing pain or harm to nature.

River water

Curtailment x2

Impediment x1

Purity x1

Process

Prepare the symbols as per the mundane extraction process. River water can be used instead of aqua vitae for this particular recipe in the extraction process. Boil river water in a large vessel, traditionally a cauldron. Add the powdered symbols. After the impediment symbol is added, the mixture will take on a light purple tint. When the purity symbol is finally added, the liquid must be boiled down to twenty four ounces, where it will begin to produce faint whispers, only heard if held close to the ear.

Effects

Spoiler

When the potion is poured over a planted seed, the whispers from the liquid will soon subside into silence. The plant will grow normally, as if nothing about it was different. However, when it bears fruit, the resulting seeds or spores will be sterile, further plants being unable to grow from them. The potion has no effect on established plant life past sprouting, and one potion may be enough to prevent an upwards of five singular plants from spreading.

Echo of Kholibrii

[T1]

[ST Signature Not Required]

-

Tiva is a remarkable piece of Mali’ame culture. Although in the present day it has been mostly lost due to lack of documentation, the ancient Mali’ame tribes utilized it daily and fluently. This language of flowers could soon become quite taxing on the flower populations, because their Tiva wreaths would soon wither. Fortunately, Elillen’ame offered a solution to prevent any waste in the common use of Tiva. A potion that can be poured over a flower, causing a glass-like replica of it to form when the time comes for it to wither.

Collect spring water into a wide bottle, and add the powdered symbols. The combination will become to gain color, at this point gently stir the bottle until the color is a bright yellow. The potion can then be poured over any cut flower for the desired effects.

Effects

Spoiler

When a small amount is poured over a cut flower, the liquid would become quickly absorbed. From this point on, it would seem as if nothing happened. It’d continue to seem this way, until somebody noticed that the flower should have withered away by then. This is because the potion caused a glass-like, delicate replica to encase the flower as soon as it begins to wilt. The flower continues to die at its natural pace, however this beautiful, detailed replica remains in place.

A nice piece that all seems fine with the exception of Cerridwen’s Tears.

Whilst I personally am not a massive fan of preggo juice, having it only craftable by ‘female hands’ is somewhat vague and requires further explanation, given the more ‘scientific’ nature of Alchemy within the context of LoTC’s universe. If it required something like women’s hair, blood or whatever else as an ingredient it’d work but simply being ‘made by a woman’ doesn’t really explain why that’d have any impact on its composition.

I’d also consider consulting different flora loreholders to see if the plant-based recipes function on every plant, since it could raise some issues with more ‘unique’ pieces of botany lore if left in their blanket states.

I expected this type of criticism, however I left that part of the potion in my desire of having something more whimsical in alchemy RP. If the ST decide I need to change it, then so be it.

The potions should have no issues with any of the lore-submitted flora:

The Ame’lie one functions just as it would normally, except growing side by side, yet fused, with other trees. Besides that, there’s no changes or benefits besides convenience of location & space.

The solitude one actually would be an inconvenience on lore plants, because you wouldn’t be able to harvest seeds from them and therefore farm more of them. Besides this, it affects the plant in no way.

And I thought it was quite clear in the Kholibrii one, that it’s simply a glass-like shape left of the flower, and bears none of the effects of the actual flower.

After thinking through your suggestions, I modified that bit to still require a woman present, while still having an ingredient explanation.

Maybe add a redline stating that if one of the trees for the tree seeds used can not function or thrive in the environment which it was planted in, that section of the tree will appear dead, whilst the rest of the tree appearing alive or something. Just so that people don’t use it to like grow trees in climates that specific trees wouldn’t be able to thrive in.

Otherwise, nice work so far!

Yeah that’s not what any of these potions did at all

Plants don’t magically know when a woman is present. Alchemy isn’t magic, it’s physical. Unless there’s some insinuation that females give off woman vapors, there’s no reasonable explanation for why a woman has to be there.

^ This. There is already lore on the ‘expiration’ of blood. “Genus will decay and be lost to blood after one narrative day or three OOC hours (whichever comes first) following its host’s death or removal from said host’s body” (again, whichever comes first). The presence of a woman is arbitrary on its own, however this can easily be altered for the blood to have a fresh (3 hours) requirement.

I’m personally a great believer of the concept that alchemical crafts shouldn’t be associated with anything related to FTB, but oh well. Good read.
