Kingdom of Orteau

“My son...I fear that in my absence, matters of state have become very unstable indeed. Return to Kaumai at once.”

That was the entirety of the dispatch. Alain’s father had never been one to explain himself, for it was enough that his orders were obeyed. In this case, he hadn’t needed to. News from the capital spread quickly when it foretold war, and not for centuries had there been a war such as this. By the time Alain arrived in the capital, the rebels had already fired the first shot and the galaxy was aflame. Yet the sight hovering above Kaumai would put even the most doubtful loyalist at ease.

Battlefleet Reclamation, Ashweather called it. On the domed walls of the titan’s bridge he could see it all: warships teeming amongst the stars, rising from their dusty anchorages with united purpose. Organized and directed by the Tanu Kavan, there was enough firepower here to burn whole systems to the ground. And he, Alain Teniert, would go along with it in the largest battleship known to the galaxy.

Through the bridge rang the call for identification, the naval broadcast demanding the new arrival’s name. By his side, Alain’s admiral picked up the ship’s transmitter and offered it to the young prince, that he might have the honor. Alain paused, taken aback by the sheer enormity of where he was. Then he spoke.

“This is the fleet of House Teniert reporting for duty. Direct orders to our flagship, Heaven’s Hammer.”

STELLARCHY OF MATENE

10,367 AE

With the withdrawal of the populists from the Senate, the crushing defeat of Avivira’s fleet and Netana’s stellarchy, AND the secession of K-Land to the hated communists, Matene’s militarisation intensifies! Gratefully accepting stimulus funds and forces from the government, Lord Darius Grayven XIII prepares for a conflict that is surely upon the horizon... Little did anyone know just how cataclysmic that conflict would be.

MANDATE OF VENNENDAL

As anticipated, the Empire would fall apart at the seams. With corruption rampant and the Senate’s power gradually eroded, it wouldn’t be long until someone merely pulled the trigger. With the amount of talented individuals on each side, it is a wonder how the Empire ever fell so deeply from grace.

Nevertheless, Vennendal had prepared itself for the good part of the past decade. It was now time for them to prove themselves among the galactic stage. Vennendal had thrown its lot in with the Republicans – now it had to make good on its deal.

Mod Actions

Mobilizing the Sons and Daughters of the Imperium! For a few year snow their Order has been organized, and cultivated across local Loyalist space. Their time to shine has now come, the Imperial Kavan Te ordering them to muster and report to their local Generals. From there they will be armed, and await further orders for the start of next year. Increased Imperial oversight will hopefully bring out large crowds of volunteers and arms. [-3 Imperial Influence]

Rebel Merchant ships are seized within Matareka space, in a hopes to increase their small stores of ships and resources.

With the former Senate denying Arapai and his motions, Lord Matareka takes up the mantel. He will begin this year by allowing a workers committee to form of representatives within his land. Together his Nobles and the Commoners will work on ensuring a fair, and safe work environment. Industrial Oilgarchs and Merchants will be forced to allow their workers less gruesome hours, more breaks, and cleaner/safer work conditions. It is a small start, but one Lord Ihorangi hopes will show the people he intends to work with them.

Third Empire - The Decline

10,368 AE

"Empty things with dead souls-- watch them tremble, watch them writhe! Their ships will shatter, as will their spirits!"

-Erasmis, The Mind Bender

---
Events

Political tensions finally boil over into open civil war, as Emperor Rän-ji dissolves the Senate after a coup. Arakatera and Panayiotou lead the Senate east, to exile, where they begin to muster arms, to set about restoring the Senate to full authority over the Third Empire. The first shots are fired by the Loyalists, when the Emperor sends Kawhena a direct order to attack Vice-Admiral Manhuera above the skies of Buath. Perhaps even more dire is the opportunistic power grab made by Tuakeo in the West, where he has declared himself Emperor of the Galaxy and the Lord of a Thousand Stars, while claiming the right and supremacy of his Fourth Empire. These are troubled days for the Empire, as her master's focus on killing their political rivals, and the external threats still prowl at the borders.

---

The Winds howl, and The House of Winds fall upon the Empire’s remnants like a hurricane! Imperial fleets over Buath detect a massive signal warping into the system, and panic at Erasmis’s fabled arrival spreads like wildfire! Indeed, at least twenty capital-ship sized signatures are registered by sensors, and dozens of more, smaller ones soon follow. Hovering just beyond 15D’s outer belt is one the largest Irik fleet ever observed, and it begins its advance to relieve the beleaguered shield world of Buath!

---

The war in the south quietens down, and little movement is seen in the regions near the border of the FWA this year. Some reports come in of the Syndicalists digging in tight to their new territory, but no campaign is launched.

---

The Emperor Rän-ji makes two major announcements this year - firstly, he declares the birth of his heir apparent, his son, Prince Kanoa, named for the First Emperor of the First Empire. Furthermore, the Emperor announces his marriage to the Lady Auraki Raa, who will henceforth be known as Empress of the Galaxy and Lady of Kaumai.

---

No word from Aokigahara this year...

The Dominion of Badab

The public housing initiative is a great success within the Dominion. Masses of poor take to the street, championing the Tyrant who invested greatly in the state’s social programs with Empire’s stimulus while the vast majority built military facilities, or simply pocketed their earnings.

Badab sits on the fence, which side will it choose!?

Emirate of Kiritau

Civil War erupts! Kiritau’s Stellarch joins the loyalists, and becomes Empress of the Galaxy, all in one year!

New Vara

New Vara has picked a side, the winning one, of course! Whichever one that turns out to be...

Grand Duchy of Alamar

As the Empire breaks down, Dryden is suddenly forced away from Buath-- more important matters spring up everywhere! One can only wonder what will become of the far away border system!

Despotate of Oberstein

Have fun with your girlfriend bud!

Oberstein has picked a side in the looming civil conflict, far from any other Republicans, its fate is uncertain. It will require a strong man to hold its ground!

Kingdom of Orteau

After suffering a terrible accident, and falling into a coma, Teniert’s now leash-less minions have wreaked havoc on his grand designs for the galaxy! Civil war looms, and Orteau prepares for battle..

Stellarchy of Matene

Tuakeo’s reinforcements arrive, bolstering the provincial fleet’s fighting strength greatly!

Grayven is entrusted with the West, how he will manage it remains to be seen.

Altaire

Civil War! Altaire picks a side, no doubt the correct one! The Stellarch still remains holed up in his fortress, constantly and autistically expanding his security net, however.

Admiral Elmo reporting for duty!

Mandate of Vennendal

Vennendal sides with the Republicans, Civil War begins, just as predicted!

Raetia

Raetia remains on the fence, carefully observing the stars around them. Which side will the pivotal Stellarchy join, many wonder..

Hyperboreia

Not so boring anymore, Panayiotuo’s actions spark civil war in the rest of the galaxy, far from the Order’s borders. How NEETly....

House Matareka

The Sons and Daughters of the Imperium but mostly Sons are mobilized for the coming conflict. Two legions are mustered and report for action.

The merchants act swiftly,  and squeeze through Matareka’s fingers for the most part. Any gain from seizing such ships are negligible.

Populists in Matareka appreciate the legislation, as do the masses, but many Imperials sigh and shake their heads at such things.

THE DIRECTORATE

Grimly, Varan naval officers began the varied startup sequences of their charges. Twinkling like stars above Serrano were the glimmering direction-lights of a hundred Varan ships – and sitting chief among them, the Re Cremisi‘s silent watch over the system as a sovereign does his vassals. The legality of the ancient ship was no longer of consequence to the Admiralty, and its existence an open secret among the Varan populace anyways; indeed, the massive beast had arrived above Serrano with the coming of the new year, bedecked in exotic symbolism and crests foreign to the commoners below. Within, torn banners, dim halls, and strange modifications made the ship unrecognizable from what it once was; without, all could tell what it was without a shadow of a doubt. As the amassed fleet positioned itself around it before final hyperlane crossing procedures, any with eyes could tell that this was the flagship of the Varan Combined Fleets.

kurt-kupser-01-sd-bridge.jpg?1558586694

No, this was no ordinary ship, nor its commander an ordinary man – Michael Tirosen, once called The Hammer, now lacked the youthful vigor of his days in the Imperial Navy. Tirosen was old and tired, his once-handsome face marred by the scars of one too many duels. In his home on Bagnoli, his great-great-grandchildren played among the vast manors that had been awarded to him for services rendered; here in space, he was joined only by the hardened faces of Vara’s veteran core and the green appearances of its newly recruited. His people required one last duty of them, Salvatore insisted. To save Vara. Tirosen had fought for the future of the Empire, above Tatavara; and in that battle, half of his home’s commanders, ships, and warlords otherwise perished. Now, he realized, perhaps that had been for naught – the future he had fought for was destroyed by the one he had fought for, and while the Empire was busy destroying itself, its enemies slowly crept in the void above.

Those thoughts were no more than thoughts, however – for he was not of the Nine Families, and such decisions were not his to make. To save the province, or perhaps to save themselves, they had opted to join the Republicans that surrounded them. Now, Tirosen was to take a province that did not have such foresight. Hapless victims of loyalty and honor, of trust and faith. As he gazed out from the bridge, he muttered something only discernible to himself – before he spoke out, simply, “Launch.”

Grand Duchy of Alamar

Year 10,368 AE

The Grand Duchy found itself amidst a civil war it did not want to happen nor did it want to be a part of, with its former Senator now in charge of the Imperial Finances. House Dryden found itself on the borders and potential frontlines of the civil war and it is an unenviable position for them to be in. Thus even more rapid militarisation and industrialisation needed to occur in the Province that was the Southern Gateway into the core.

A child is born in the imperial capital while an old man, Harare Kekeno, draws an ancient ceremonial sword above its mother. A natural birth was not Kiritau’s tradition, but it would keep this ritual. Reaching up to grasp the naked blade, Empress Raa drips blood onto the face of her newborn child and speaks its name: Kanoa Rama.

“Today’s blood to keep the past from killing the future,” chants Kekeno, cleaning the sword – the very same that Raa had used to behead her father.

x8hQeef.png

Sheikh Aitanga Uri kneels by that same old pane of shipglass and stares down at Kaumai. The heavy scent of fine Kiritauan oud, dank and woody, emanates from the man… though Uri’s traditional face covering gathers dust on the floor where it has lain for an entire year. Immediately after he was thrown into the slime pit the Senate disbanded and left Uri without an official appointment by Kiritau. For one year no communications had arrived to return him to his home stellarchy or otherwise repurpose him. Now as the door to his chamber slides open he does not bother to turn around.

“If you will reshape me now, answer me one question. Have I been reshaped before?” asks Uri. The unraveller approaches and removes the Sheikh’s hood. Supposing he was not even worth the time to have his question answered, Uri resigns himself to being erased. The unraveller’s hand grips the sheikh’s jaw as Uri opens his mind to being freely traversed.

“You are yourself alone, intact forever. I have come for another reason,” comes the reply. Uri’s uncovered face bares its pain full-force to the unraveller’s reflection in the glass, but the Kaitangata already knew more than Uri’s face and words could convey. “Despite a year of no guidance and a galactic civil war, you have been industrious.”

Uri gritted his teeth as the unraveller’s hand receded. He still remembered– he was intact– but if he was not to be reshaped, then what was the point of handling him this way?

“I will give you a new identity, but it is important that you are not fundamentally altered by reshaping. From today you will be known as Tau, and you will be given a new title: Maitihia e te Raa.”

Tau stares down through the shipglass at Kaumai. The pain did not stop. Perhaps it never would.

Empress Raa stands in the dark hall of a repurposed prison ship’s medbay, splattered with blood and surrounded by corpses. She walks along the beds lining the sides of the ship, glancing over each cot that holds the remains of someone who had been unable to struggle. None of their minds had been good enough for an unraveller, but their bodies found a new purpose for Raa. One body moves from behind a bulkhead and tries to run – useful, Raa could practice with her newest sidearm. Levelling the weapon at the runner’s head, one shot makes quick work of him.

LMQTFh1.jpg

However many of them Raa used up, however, she could not seem to kill the feelings inside. She is grateful, however, and intends to repay the Empire’s generosity by being effective. Being effective means practicing, means being prepared. She has a duty to Kiritau, to the imperial hegemony, to her emperor: a duty to not die and to keep doing her job.

Raa’s efficiency had always been necessary as Kiritau’s emir, but she had slaughtered more here now than were needed to optimize her practice session. To function optimally in the midst of violence Raa’s mind needs to be kept polished like steel, oiled and cleaned like a firearm. With every paraplegic she blew away she saw the face of her father. If he could see her now would his eyes brim with pride? The empress had paid each one the attention it deserved as she bathed in its dying screams. Yet, since their deaths were simply not killing the feelings, Raa knows she should stop being so wasteful.

The ship contains more than paraplegics however. Scurrying about the ship are those too insane or otherwise mentally crippled beyond the point of repair by even the most skilled of psykics. These are more satisfying targets since they pose more risk, and Raa holds esteem for their final service, too. None of these beloved children of the emirate will waste away in hospital beds or asylums, consuming resources and causing strife for their kin. No, they will go out in a blaze of glory directly into the hands of their sovereign and empress.

Civil War has come and her people need Raa at her most optimal. If she does not do a good enough job, more than necessary will meet the same fate as these fleshy masses.

Stepping out towards the brightly lit airlock to prepare for cleansing and reboarding, Raa finds the silhouette of Sheikh Tau waiting for her inescapably at the chokepoint. He is not supposed to be here. His blue eyes scrutinize her as they glow but he is hard to see, washed out by the lights of the decontamination chamber. Raa is by design one of the least readable people in the galaxy, but Tau always had a way of knowing despite not being a psykic. The excessive death had not brought her peace. Raa steps into the decontamination chamber and the door seals behind her. Her emerald eyes are brilliant in her blood-spattered face: they see clearly that his killing had not brought him peace either.
