    • Pagh (Pronounced “Paw” with a light G sound): The ability to convert an individual's life essence into Psionic energy. This is used interchangeably with Psionic energy as well and is a noun. It can be referred to as “their Pagh” when referring to an individual's ability to convert their life essence into Psionic energy. Or as simply Pagh when in reference to Psionic energy itself.
    • Physicals: A slang term to refer to those who lack any form of Psionic ability. It is not derogatory.
    • Higher Psion: A Psion who has undergone Enlightenment and has begun to dissolve their ID to gain greater abilities and an enhanced perspective of the world.
    • Lesser Psion: A Psion who has not undergone Enlightenment. Rather, they focus on controlling their ID and making it work for them. Having less abilities than Higher Psions but able to exercise superior control over the abilities they share.
    • Emotional Aura: A large area around an individual that holds clues to their emotional state and acts as a defense mechanism against more intrusive Psionic abilities.
    • Emotional Residue: A metaphysical stain left in an area or on an object caused by exposure to powerful emotions. It is only detectable through the Psychometry ability.
    • Willful Aura: The Aura generated by a Psion with which they use to cast their abilities. How much energy the Aura has dictates just how large it will be. This Aura can be shaped to make any shape so long as it maintains a set volume.
    • Ego-Death: A terrifying condition where the consciousness of the individual slowly dissipates away. The individual is completely and horrifyingly aware of this during the whole ordeal.
    • Psionic Overflow: An condition caused by overuse of one's Psionic abilities. It is characterized by Ego Death, bouts of utter Psychosis, and incoherent ramblings about the true nature of the universe. A Psion with Psionic Overflow cannot use any of their abilities for upwards of two weeks. In certain cases the Overflow is so extreme that it will cause the Psions head to literally explode from the energy feedback.
    • Awakening: The first stage for most Psions and the only point that Higher and Lesser Psions share an equal amount of abilities. This occurs when a Psion has sufficiently reorganized their minds and have begun either dissolving their ID or breaking and controlling it.
    • Enlightenment: A Higher Psion who has dissolved a large majority (50%-75%) of their ID. These Psions are very positive, helpful people. They often delve into art, dance, and theater as a result of their “Enlightened” perspective of the world.
    • Transcendence: The final stage of a Higher Psion. Transcended individuals inherently understand their role in the greater scheme of things, their sight having elevated so high. They have access to the most wide range of abilities than any Psion.
    • Paragon: The most rare type of Psion. Paragons are very unique, being Higher Psions who were trained by Adept Lesser Psions. This union of morals and philosophies creates a truly virtuous being who aligns themselves (After transcendence) with a specific virtue. These include but are not limited to Justice, Mercy, Wisdom, Patience, Charity, Diligence, Compassion, Courage, Valor,  etc.

Overview:

 

The art of Psionics extends far beyond simply spells, casting, and combat. It is a set of morals, philosophy and culture that truly define it. While others focus on defending the world from outside threats, Psions instead aid the individuals of the world, helping to prevent moral decadence and philosophical stagnation by guiding people to their destiny, regardless of who they are. A Psion's power is meant to come solely from themselves and focuses heavily on teachings of inner strength and altruism. They, in essence, take their own life essence and turn it into their Pagh, or Psionic energy. This power has many uses though it is inherently non-lethal.

 

  • Higher Psionics is a [3] slot magic at Transcendence, one slot per tier advancement.

  • Lesser Psionics is feat level.

  • Higher and Lesser Psionics requires a valid MA to use.

  • Higher Psionics can be learned under a teacher with a valid TA.

  • Lesser Psionics can be learned from either a teacher with a valid TA or an ST approved book on the matter.

  • Higher Psionics requires a Greater soul to be learned, Lesser Psionics does not.

  • Being born a Latent Psion or an Empath requires at least one parent with a valid MA in Psionics and an ST supervised roll out of ⅓ where a 1 is a normal Descendent, a 2 being a Latent Psion and a 3 being an Empath.

  • Becoming a Paragon requires a valid MA and must include the virtue they choose.

This is all achieved through reorganization of an individual's consciousness by altering and manipulating the three primary components of consciousness. These are the Ego, the Superego, and the ID. Briefly explained, the Ego is our primary conscious mind which consists of our personal identity and mediator between the subconscious and conscious mind. Our Superego acts as our moral and ethical vanguard, telling us right from wrong and controls the impulses of the ID. The ID is the primal purely subconscious portion of our mind, it deals with our more base desires like food, water, sex, etc. When a Psion achieves Awakening they are in actuality understanding that these three parts of ourselves are fluid and ultimately slave to the Ego. This allows for said Awakened individual to begin modifying their thought patterns and deductive reasoning to achieve greater control over all three components of the mind. The process of Awakening is a long arduous one requiring long stretches of meditation and mental acuity. During this process they are essentially combining the Ego and Superego into a more advanced form of consciousness granting greater awareness and allowing for the use of the two most fundamental abilities in Psionics, this being Aura manipulation and Empathy. 

 

This is a stressful stage for the Psion; as their Superego joins to their Ego they experience short bouts of Ego Death during meditation, making the experience extremely unpleasant. Once the Superego and Ego have joined fully in sync the next stage is dealing with the ID. The ID however is far less cooperative, often fighting back to avoid assimilation. At this point the Psion has two options, dissolve the ID, or break and fully master it, either choice leading to a Higher or Lesser Psion. A Higher Psion chooses the first option, dissolving the ID into the reformed consciousness, this however infects the new consciousness with aspects from the ID, in a way, remaking a new more controlled one that no longer is delegated to the subconscious. The ID is not destroyed, rather dissolved into solution so to say. Once dissolved, the ID acts as the Psions method of interacting and generating their Pagh. This is why Higher Psions have strange impulses, it is what's left of their ID attempting to rebel and reform itself. A lesser Psion on the other hand chooses the second option, breaking it and fully mastering control over it. This causes Lesser Psions to have zero need to act on impulses, rather, they take the ID’s opinion into consideration before they act, giving them precise and accurate computational power while having far less abilities and actual power than Higher Psions.

 

Newer Psions as well as more brave ones however can put themselves at risk of overuse of their life essence when casting. This causes a condition known as Psionic overflow where the amount of Psionic energy within a being outweighs their own consciousness. This induces a feeling of horrific euphoria where they simultaneously occupy a higher realm of existence and our own. On top of this it also causes temporary ego death, throwing the poor soul into a state of personal incoherence. In a way, their own consciousness is leaking out into their Aura and evaporating into thin air, both granting them a far more detailed view of the universe but also killing them in the most slow and intimate way that a mortal can conceive.

Symptoms of this condition are characterized by incoherent babbling about the fundamental nature of the universe and utter mad confusion about who they are and where. This condition will last until the imbalance is rectified. This normally takes around a week to fully restore if treated with Mental healing. Due to the mostly Pacifistic nature of Psions however this condition is somewhat rare.

 

Once a Psion has generated Psionic energy their options with it are broad. This energy occupies a higher level of existence. Thus it is, for the most part, invisible except to other Psions. The energy is emitted in the form of an Aura that is mentally maintained by the Psion. For Lesser Psions this act is an active and very strenuous one, similar to sprinting instead of walking. For Higher Psions this takes the same effort as breathing, a near completely unconscious act (Though they completely lack a subconscious.). It is within this aura that a Psion may perform their wonders. The size of the aura is directly corresponding to the amount of Psionic energy the Psion has generated. A Higher Psion who has undergone Transcendence for example has a maximum passive aura of around 4 meters. A newly awakened Lesser Psion on the other hand has zero range, forcing them to make physical contact to use their abilities. There are of course abilities that allow a Psion to temporarily increase that range dramatically, but even the most Enlightened Psions find it quite draining to use these abilities for very long.

 

 

TLDR: By reorganizing the three primary components of consciousness (The Ego, the Superego, and the ID) Psions are able to convert and manipulate energy with the use of their Aura. The ID is either dissolved (giving the Psion access to more abilities) by Higher Psions to allow them to cast and achieve full control of their Aura. Or it is broken and mastered (Preventing greater abilities but still allowing the base abilities to be used with greater precision) by the Lesser Psions. 


 

Psion Classification

 

Latent Psions:

The most primitive class of Psion; Latent Psions, unlike all over classifications, do not have any abilities from a normal Physical. They are the offspring of at least one Psionic parent. While they possess no mental abilities at birth they maintain the physical changes of someone who has undergone Awakening. They have an inherent gift for Psionics and becoming one carries less risk than if they weren’t. The chance of one being born is ⅓, the other two being born as a normal Physical or an Empath. Death during childbirth is unfortunately quite common for Latent Psions and Empaths due to the increased size of their heads.

 

Empath: 

Empaths are the most common form of Psion, mainly due to it being the most basic ability. They are born able to use the Empathy ability and are extremely prized by Psionic teachers due to the reduction in their learning curve as compared to other students. Like Latent Psions, Empaths bear all of the physical changes that come with the Awakening. Mentally speaking they differ from other Physicals in that, due to being born telepathically empathetic, they are almost exclusively kind, gentle, and caring people. Unfortunately Empaths rarely live beyond 20 years old as their abilities, untrained, will begin to slowly overwhelm them.

 

Lesser Psions:

A Lesser Psion is a being of logic, empathy, and compassion. They differ in many ways to Higher Psions, having a much greater deal of control over the abilities they share with Higher Psions. This creates a sort of mutual respect between the two, wherein neither claim superiority over the other, generally speaking at least. To many they come off as stoic, unfeeling, emotionless. This is actually because of their control over their subconscious. They are in fact one of the most compassionate and altruistic people in our world. They feel emotion stronger than most others, yet they maintain precise control over this. Psionically speaking they have access to far fewer abilities than Higher Psions and their Aura is very limited, they are only capable of generating an Aura a meter outwards from themselves, and even this task is very strenuous. Thus most of their casting is done through physical contact, exclusively their hands and forehead. Unlike the other classes Lesser Psions have very minimal Psychological changes. The most they will receive is a small bulge in the antihelix portion of their ear. Interestingly, they are the only class that has an inherent resistance to mental attacks, Psionic or otherwise. Most notably is their resistance to the Subconscious Infiltration ability. An unfortunate downside to being a Lesser Psion is their unoriginality. Due to their heavily controlled nature they will often find it difficult to make “new” things. Some feel this curse more than others but it is still prevalent to some degree in all of them.  

 

Higher Psions:

This is the final step in Psionic evolution, within the physical world at least. Higher Psions are the most “powerful” type of Psion, though most would laugh if called that. They are very optimistic, intelligent, and altruistic. It is easy to see them as somewhat naive and childish in some respects. Of all the classes, their physical changes are the most pronounced. Their ears having fully fused to the sides of their heads to form a satellite dish type of appearance. Some believe this makes it easier for them to emit their Aura though this is presently only speculation. Having access to many convenient abilities, Higher Psions live easy-going lifestyles relatively speaking. They are however, conscious of literally every bodily function in their body. For some this seems like a boon. For Higher Psions it is a tedious curse. Every breath, every blink, even the regulation of their blood pressure and glucose, all of it must now be done consciously.

 

A Higher Psion views the world very differently than any other being. They are able to bear witness to colors, shades, lights, and shapes beyond normal comprehension. This is the primary cause of their almost childlike wonder of the world. Where others see a boring rock, Higher Psions see a gem. It is difficult for them to describe what they see beyond saying they can “Feel the deepness of a color.” or “See the depth and power of water.” These things cause them to at times feel incredibly isolated, often seeking refuge with other Psions. They share a very close relationship with Lesser Psions though this point of view is not shared between them. This is not meant in a negative light. In fact both are aware of the viewpoint differences between them. Lessers crave logic and order above all. Highers crave satisfaction, new experiences and emotional stimulation. However, Lesser Psions often reign in lofty and ambitious Higher Psions when they lack a teacher. This is brought on by their greater control over both their emotions and abilities, something Higher Psions lack greatly. This fact makes Lesser Psions fantastic teachers for Psions in general.

 

 

Paragons:

In the world of Psionics, there are scenario’s that lead to the creation of an entire new class of Psion. Empath’s are the most simple example, being the children of Psions and inheriting some of their traits. However, there are far more rare, intrinsically significant cases where a mix of philosophy leads to the creation of Guardians. Paragons are the result of a Lesser Psion teaching a Higher Psion though this is not the case 100% of the time (Being closer to around 15% of the time.) or from truly exceptional Higher Psions who actively study the philosophy of Lesser Psions. This union creates a form of mental stability and moral consciousness that Higher Psions simply cannot achieve on their own. A Paragon is a person of virtue, often seeking to align themselves with a specific virtue and becoming a guardian of it. These virtues are quite broad but a couple examples are Justice, Mercy, Wisdom, etc. Upon taking the mantle of said virtue the Paragon will often ask to be referred to by that virtue. (Though more humble virtues like Humility itself simply ask to be called by their given name, this applies to all virtues and one doesn’t need to take on the name, it is ultimately the choice of the Psion.) A Paragon does not have access to more abilities than other Psions. In fact, upon taking up the mantle they find themselves unable to learn or use any magic besides Psionics they once had or had the potential to have. This is to signify their new dedication to their chosen virtue. A Paragon receives nothing in return for this beyond a moderate increase to the stability of casting Non-Combative spells.

 

The responsibility for a Paragon is somewhat vague for some virtues. Paragons of Mercy often spend time in warring societies attempting to persuade cease-fires and preaching peace. Paragons of Justice will seek out Descended and Fallen, seeking to stop or hinder their plans. Paragons of Wisdom, Compassion, and Valor are the most sociable, spending great deals of time in foreign communities, devoting their time to teaching and guiding those who are hindered by social or personal decadence so that they may achieve their destiny. That is the ultimate goal of a Paragon, to use their power and wisdom to guide others down their own paths.

  1. A Paragon is only formed from a Lesser Psion teaching a Higher Psion or from a very exceptional Higher Psion reading about the teachings of Lessers, the latter being extremely rare.

  2. A Paragon is not more powerful than a similarly taught Transcended. In fact by taking the mantle of a Paragon they will be unable to learn any non-Psionic magic.

 

 

 

Mental and Psychological Changes

 

Physical Changes:

Once Awakened, whether before birth or otherwise, all Psions undergo some degree of physical change. This is partially caused by their ability to passively control their bodily functions but what really induces the change is unknown. The changes for all races capable of Psionics seem to be uniform to some degree.

A Transcended with their fully developed features.

 

  • Height is reduced or raised to 5’10 max.

  • Muscles seem to become leaner, though in actuality they are just becoming more dense and compact while maintaining similar though slightly lessened strength.

  • Tusks in orc’s shrink significantly.

  • Dwarves become less stout (IE, they become leaner and slightly taller)

  • Rarely, a halfling can take on a green hue.

  • Ears fuse to the sides of their heads to increase the forward surface area of the head.

  • Eye color becomes much more vibrant.

  • Higher, Latent, and Empathic Psions experience a moderate growth in their skull and brain tissue. This is not so substantial to the point where it's uncanny but it is noticeable.

  • The pinky finger on both hands (if one exists) will begin to degrade and painlessly fall off once Enlightenment is achieved.

 

Some of the more foolishly arrogant Higher Psions believe this to be the peak form of any race but this is untrue. Oddly enough Orcs seem to lose the ability to enter a blood rage after Awakening. The most interesting change however is to their reproductive system. Quite simply, Psions cannot reproduce the “traditional” way after Enlightenment. For male Psions; when they have decided to conceive offspring they will quite literally sever a portion of their life essence and give it to their partner. This is reversed when it is a female. Simply put, they “think” a child into existence within. To Higher Psions, intercourse is very primitive and unnecessary.

  1. Overall the physical changes are fairly moderate, not changing the person into someone unrecognizable but the changes are easy to notice if one were to look closer.

  2. Due to the loss of their pinky finger after Enlightenment a Psion will find immense difficulty in using hand held weapons, the first blow likely sending the weapon flying back towards the Psion. Hand to hand combat however is much less affected by this. The sole exception to this is Psionic weapons. This detriment will remain even if both hands are replaced.

 

 

 

Mental Changes:
It is within the mind that most of the changes take place. A vast majority of Psions who undergo Awakening find themselves able to recall every memory of their entire life in an instant. Those who do, obtain a near perfect photographic memory. However, between Lesser Psions and Higher Psions, the latter get the worst end of the bargain, as their ID will often be dissolved, whilst the Lesser Psions will often take pride in their flawless memory.  A Greater Psion who fails to manage their ID dissolution, will find that their ID will begin very slowly reforming itself in an uncontrolled manner. When this happens, they will become a Descended. This is characterized by the Psion acting on many of their impulses, whether this is reckless disregard for life or consistent overuse of their abilities and frequent Psionic Overflow scenario’s. This will only get worse as the Psion finds themselves unable to resist random urges and impulses as their ID continues to reform. This can be rectified by either a Lesser Psion or a Transcended who will need to use a very strong form of Soul Joining to redissolve their ID, this cannot be done by the Descended, it must be done through outside means. 

 

For Lesser Psions this is a more risk free venture. Often teachers and Tomes on becoming a Lesser will go into length on logic philosophy and altruism. These are actually ways in which Lesser Psions break their ID, by subconsciously shifting it away from suggesting impulsive actions and instead working alongside the Superego to form a linked yet partially separate consciousness from the Ego.

 

The Murder and Disconnection Clause: Due to their strong connection to the universe and the nature of their transcendence; murder is not only frowned upon but actively leaves a mark on the emotional Aura of the Psion. For a Psion to commit murder is for them to go back on everything that their gifts have taught them. In this context murder refers to the intent and success to slay another life form for a reason other than sustenance. For these reasons a Psion is subject to having their Psionics taken away or regressed by their peers. This is done through a form of Mind Link that disconnects the Psions ability to produce Pagh, effectively making them a normal Physical. If the offending Psion actively tries to avoid this they will slowly turn into a Fallen and will be treated as such by their peers. Until judged or a verdict is reached and the Murder stain is removed the Psions emote chain will be reduced by half, down to 3 emotes.

  1. A Psion who willfully commits murder will have a murder stain placed upon their Emotional Aura. This can be identified swiftly by any Psion able to use Empathy.

  2. Whether the entirety of their magic is taken or simply regressed is largely up to their fellow Psions and should be treated on a case by case basis in terms of decision making.

  3. Accidentally killing someone will also put the Murder Stain on the Psions Emotional Aura though it will not cause the emote chain reduction penalty for this. They will still need to be judged innocent by their peers to have the stain removed.

  4. Murder in this context extends to leaving people in a situation where they are going to die. A Psion must make every attempt to save the individual or the Murder Stain will be applied. Punishments for this tend to be less severe but are still very frowned upon.

 

 

 

 

 

Learning and Casting

 

Choosing students: 

The process of becoming a Higher Psion must begin young. There are rare instances where an adult can learn as well but due to the mental requirements this is both unlikely and difficult. Regardless, Psionics requires a specific headspace and mindset to be learned effectively. As a result a Psionic teacher will rarely teach anyone above the age of twenty. In fact the average range of Awakened Psions are as young as 5-10. Certain races as well learn much faster and efficiently. These being High Elves and interestingly, Wood Elven women and Dark Elven males. The learning curve however is one of the steepest for any ability in our world, at times taking well over 20-35 years to achieve transcendence. The process of learning is a tedious and extremely personal one. In many ways the teacher is raising a child at the same time, causing a much deeper bond between teacher and student. Once the level of Enlightenment is achieved however the learning process becomes much easier due to telepathy now being usable between teacher and student.

 

For lesser Psions the process is more straightforward and easy going than Higher Psions. It is in fact possible to learn entirely by oneself how to become a lesser Psion through reading tomes on its teachings. Though Lessers often prefer to teach in person due to the philosophy they follow which states “There is a point in one's mastery where a being becomes stagnant, the only way of which to escape is to pass on what they have learned.”

  1. Training of Higher Psions must begin at a minimum of 10 years old with a max of 20 years old.

  2. Upon attempting the Awakening ritual the potential Psion must roll based on their condition either 1/20 or 1/35 where one is a failure and all other roles are a success.

During the first three weeks irl following their Awakening if the Psion attempts to cast they must roll 1/100 where everything above a 15 is a success, anything at or below will cause the Psion to undergo Psionic Overflow. This roll failure is reduced to a five and below if their teacher is nearby to help them.

 

Teaching Overview:

The act of teaching Psionics is a very personal one, for both the student and teacher. It begins with the Awakening ritual; wherein the teacher has the student ingest various psychedelic substances to induce a clearing of the students subconscious. This ritual however is dangerous, there is a 1/20 chance of the student dying (This will count as a PK.) Latent Psions and Empaths however have a 1/35 chance. The risk is due to how abrupt the Awakening is, it is very lightly similar to a blind person regaining their sight but much more profound and extreme. Following the ritual if the student lives they will experience extreme headaches and migraines for around two years (1 for Latent Psions and empaths.) not debilitating but it is enough to make everyday life strenuous.

These headaches are a result of overstimulation as the Awakened Psion begins to perceive the world in a higher form. Things will taste, feel, sound, smell, and look more in depth and detailed than before, much like the colorblind being given sight to see colors they couldn’t before. To the young Psion this phase is intoxicating, the world becoming more clear and beautiful. This is also a risky stage as the first passive effects of the Awakening take effect. Following the Awakening is Enlightenment, a step that typically takes 16 years (12 for Empaths). Enlightenment occurs when the Psion has completed their physical changes, and mastered the basic abilities of a Psion. Enlightenment is just as abrupt as Awakening but does not carry the same risks. As stated before, the Psion now has access to Surface Telepathy and can now communicate far more efficiently than before. Finally comes the final stage Transcendence. Once a Psion achieves Transcendence there is very little the teacher may give to their student beyond vague guidance, advice, and moral support. They have become fully grown, Psionically speaking of course. Training of Lesser Psions deviates from Higher at Awakening however , taking on a much more emotional and physical approach. Where Higher Psions focus on the destruction of their subconscious mind, Lesser Psions instead focus on controlling it. This doesn’t inherently make Higher Psions superior, simply that they have access to more abilities, albeit with less control over the abilities they share with Lessers.

 

 

Risks:

During the first four years of their training the teacher will need to keep a close monitoring of their apprentice. Constantly inspecting their mental state with Deep Telepathy (The student of course will be informed of this and their consent to view inside their mind given prior.) This is very important as this is a delicate time for a Psion. They have very limited control over their active mental abilities and even less understanding of their passive ones. These things put them at risk of extreme Psionic Overflow, meaning they could quite literally overthink themselves to death. So long as the teacher is nearby and able to use their abilities this risk is easy to prevent. Once the student achieves Enlightenment there is far less risk. From this point of the sole role of the teacher is to teach their apprentice how to best utilize their abilities. This includes ethical and moral concerns, risks, and most importantly, power temptation. The student is already fully aware of what they can do once they are Enlightened, it’s what they do with those abilities and how they use them that matters. 

 

Training Higher Psions:

Training begins with small things, most often being heavily assisted by their teacher who will boost their abilities with Psionic Buffering. Training at this beginning stage is gentle and usually doesn’t involve anything physical, just pure thought control and manipulation. 

Essentially the mentor is helping their apprentice to eliminate their subconscious mind and give their conscious mind complete control. This is slow and tedious, in which the mentor and pupil meditate together for hours sometimes even days at a time. Inside their minds however the student is waging a war of control against their subconscious. This is not a battle that is won suddenly, it is continuous, the subconscious seeing this as an attack will fight until every last shred of it is wiped from existence. To Psions the unconscious mind is a primitive and useless component of conscious existence, left over from a bygone age. Once the entirety of the students subconscious has been eliminated, they will achieve Enlightenment. 

 

Once the Awakened individual has eliminated 50% of their subconscious the mentor will move onto the next phase; Aura Manipulation. This is the first active ability any Psion will need to learn before moving forward. The mentor will have their pupil change the shape of their Aura, making it form a square, then a pyramid, etc. The teacher meanwhile will need to instruct them throughout this, frequently checking their students' minds for discrepancies or issues. This step takes around a year to fully master. Once this is done though; the Psion will begin to manifest abilities they have affinities to. This is a partially optional process, as the abilities that manifest first are the ones they feel best suits their needs. 

 

The abilities will only manifest when there is a specific conscious need for them. This will in turn, cause the mentor to put their student into discretely  supervised situations that are likely to call for such abilities. First manifestations of a Psion's power are extremely powerful and unpredictable. The teacher, knowing this, will need to take every precaution to ensure their student doesn’t injure themselves or others, especially when the more combative are needed to be manifested. Once Enlightenment is reached this changes drastically as new abilities will no longer manifest, the Psion will simply know all abilities available to them.

 

 

 

Teaching Lesser Psions: 

Lesser Psions are, at their core, a people based in logic. As their philosophy differs from Higher Psions they’re teaching methods do as well. A prospective Lesser Psion does not have nearly restrictions on age, race, or mindset as Highers but certain mindsets are considered more preferable. This mainly includes a logical mindset not dictated by emotion or impulse, rather than calm deductive reasoning.

 

Due to their limited Aura, Lesser Psions often use the Soul Joining ability to teach their students. Because of the very intimate and personal nature of this ability Lessers are somewhat reserved about just who they teach, often choosing individuals they know well and trust deeply. Unlike Higher Psions, Lessers do not make use of any major Psionic aid during learning. This results in a slow arduous phase of philosophy lessons and mundane mental control techniques. 

 

Aura Theory:

In Psionics there are two distinct types of Aura; Emotional and Willful. Aura’s are universally invisible to all forms of detection besides, of course, Psionics. All beings capable of thought produce an emotional Aura, humanoids, ghosts, even gods and void dwellers produce one. An emotional Aura is directly influenced by the psychological state of the entity in question. Both in size and emotional radiation. A number of Psionic abilities revolve around interacting and on the more extreme end, manipulation of an Entity’s Emotional Aura. Empathy being the most basic. In a way the emotional Aura is a window into the consciousness of the entity as well as their mental state. It is the unconscious mind that controls it and the unconscious is a very defensive vanguard to an entity’s mind. One may observe it for example without any risk or worry; but attempts to pierce or influence it in any way without consent will result in the unconscious mind fighting back by default. This makes attempts to look into a person's thoughts without consent very dangerous for a Psion.

 

Most abilities in a Psions arsenal require the use of Psionic energy to reach out and interact. When a Psion begins to probe deeper they are effectively piercing into the person's Aura. This leaves the Psion completely vulnerable to the subconscious defenses of the individual. The subconscious defends itself instinctively by pushing back at the attack. This creates a sort of Psionic friction that duplicates the Psionic energy of the Psion and returns said energy back to them. Inducing Psionic Overflow as a result. This, in essence, means a Psion puts themselves at significant risk when attempting to enter an entity's mind without expressed consent from their conscious mind. For certain entities like gods, ageuldaemons, and ghosts; a light mental tap on their emotional Aura is considered a “Hello, I am here.” This carries no inherent risk by itself though how the entity reacts is completely up to said entity. 

 

The size and shape of the Emotional Aura is completely dependent on the Emotional state as well as the overall power of the entity. An enraged god for example could be sensed from across a continent; while a disgruntled individual would need to be right next to the Psion. Powerful emotional outbursts in general are disturbing to Psions. It does not physically pain them so to say. Instead it is like an unpleasant smell or sight. This especially applies to negative outbursts of emotion. It is only base primal emotions that are passively sensed. These include but are not limited to, pain, depression, rage, hatred, love, joy etc. These are very surface level analysis and do not provide much info beyond general vibes from the target. In fact due to the secretive nature of some it is fairly common for an individual’s subconscious to project an incorrect emotion. Thus eliminating any definitive way of disconcerting someone’s intentions by just reading their emotional Aura. Certain powerful outbursts as well leave behind what is called Emotional Residue, a sort of metaphysical stain left in the world. These can last varying amounts of time depending on the emotion, how strong it was, and the power of the entity. Typically they will last for 1-10 years though extremely powerful emotions and especially powerful entities can last for centuries.

 

A willful Aura is only cast by Psions, from this they produce their wonders. A willful Aura is a very unique thing. Put in terms a Physical can comprehend; it is an extension of their conscious self, their will, ego, emotions, and being all reside, dissolved, within this Aura. The formation, manipulation, and influence over this Aura is the very core of Psionic studies. A person standing in a Psions Aura will hear solid hum upon entering which dissipates to a soft nearly unnoticeable background noise after a few seconds. This is the physical manifestation of the Psion's own consciousness interacting with the physical world. This means a willful Aura is lightly customizable. The sounds of birds chirping or music can be emitted by this Aura. These cannot be deafening or disorientating, it is purely aesthetic. The range of this Aura depends on a few factors like the Psions tier, the amount of Psionic energy they maintain in the Aura on a normal basis. The shape and dimensions of the Aura can be manipulated at will but by default it will be a dome originating from the crown of the Psions head. The degree of control they have corresponds to their tier. An Enlightened Psion would be able to form most shapes and stretch their Aura in a singular direction for around 8 meters with difficulty. A Transcended on the other hand could reach 12 with moderate difficulty.

  1. Passively viewing another entity or humanoid's emotional Aura is completely surface level and can easily be incorrect, it cannot be used to learn their motives, intentions or nuanced feelings. 

  2. Anyone who enters a Psion's Willful Aura, willingly or not, will be aware of a distinctive solid hum. This can be clouded somewhat by outside noise and interference but due to how unique it is such a situation is rare.

  3. An Aura will maintain a fixed volume during manipulation, the only thing capable of changing this being the addition of more Psionic energy. Therefore multiple emotes may be required to get the Aura to the right size and shape.

  4. An Aura cannot grow and be manipulated at the same time, the appropriate size must be achieved before changing shape.

 

 

 

Casting, Consent, and Psionic Instability: 

For a Psion, casting one’s abilities is a two step process mentally. Think about what they want, then make it happen; thought is far more efficient than casting spells though spells carry significantly more power overall when put side by side. Psionic’s however, by its very nature, is not oriented around a need for more power. It is a tool for interacting with the world around the Psion.

 

To begin, a Psion first molds their Aura to be more conducive to the task at hand, whether it is stretching out their Aura to make contact with something across a room or conjuring forth Psionic constructs; they must be done within the confines of the Aura. Like most magic it is very difficult to move very much during use of most Psionic abilities. Unlike most magic a Psion is able to cast their abilities far more frequently. The Psion must maintain a certain degree of mental serenity to cast, drawing on their positive emotions to focus themselves. For Higher Psions this is a difficult step to learn, constantly fighting down more dominant emotions like fear, love, rage. In this context serenity is the state in which all of their emotions have blended into a concise and stable hierarchy, contentment being at the top. 

 

The casting process for Enlightened and below abilities is very discreet, the only indication of casting being the solid hum of their Aura. Transcended eyes will glow no matter what ability they use, this being due to their high Pagh. Certain abilities as well are not discreet like Psionic constructs which require various hand movements and gestures and creates a great deal of light. Some abilities on the other hand like Telepathy have next to no indicators of their use. Many abilities by their very design are meant to be used in conjunction with other abilities, some even require it as a prerequisite or to achieve their full use.

Notably, the act of enlarging and molding ones Aura are two distinct steps that cannot be done at the same time. If one wishes to enlarge the volume of their Aura they must emote such separately. This means if a fellow telepath for example is across a crowded room the Psion must first ensure their Aura has enough volume, if it does then they may proceed with the molding emote, otherwise they must add more volume. Both of these acts are mildly tiresome, the equivalent of briskly running up two flights of stairs. This accumulates however, each act afterwards being further strain and more flights to go up. More extreme combinations of abilities may make the first two acts far too difficult to achieve. After  [6] emotes (Each emote/emotes being dedicated to a specific ability) the Psion will find themselves becoming incredibly exhausted and having less control over their abilities, telepathy becomes hard to understand, constructs and telekinesis become unstable etc. This becomes evident as well if only a few emotes are used for too long. If for example, a Psion were to lift an object with telekinesis after both enlarging their Aura and molding it; those three emotes can be maintained for about 3 minutes narrative time. It is the equivalent of  holding a milk jug directly in front of oneself, it won’t immediately become too much to hold, but over time they will tire and begin to tremble with the effort of holding the jug.

 

If at any point the strain of maintaining their action becomes too much to bear or they surpass [6] emotes; their hold will Psionically snap back quite painfully. Initially this starts as an utterly debilitating headache but slowly will descend into Psionic Overflow which will last a few days (IRL time.). Due to these reasons Psions must be very careful not to overuse their abilities. And those that do learn a very terrifying excruciating lesson in restraint. Following the six emotes or the release of the ability; [2] emotes must be dedicated to mentally resting (In this context, resting means not using Psionic abilities. The Psion can still move and dodge). Proceeding this, the Psion may cast again with their [6] emote chain. In the case of emergencies the Psion may use [1] Resting emote though this will reduce their next emote chain to [3] emotes, and the next rest will require a full [6] emotes. Failing to rest will cause a whiplash effect and stun the Psion for [3] emotes.

 

 

TLDR: Psions have a max emote chain of [6] emotes, these emotes can be dedicated to any ability. After the six emotes the Psion must dedicate [2] emotes to mentally resting and cannot cast during this period. If the Psion is in an emergency they can reduce the resting emotes to [1] emote but this will reduce the chain to [3] emotes and the next rest will require [6] emotes. Failing to rest will stun the Psion for [3] emotes upon casting their [7th] emote.

 

Consent: 

Consent is likely one of the most important things that limits all Psions. Much like a vampire asking permission to enter a home; Psions require consent to enter or prode the deeper more intimate parts of an entity's mind. To attempt to enter without such leaves the Psion incredibly vulnerable and at the mercy of the target. The subconscious of any entity is very defensive about what goes on within that mind. When consent to enter is given the Psion must be extremely clear about what they intend to do, why, and how. Doing anything outside of these things will instantly set off alarms in that person's subconscious and will almost undoubtedly lead to the Psion being punted out. Should the Psion be thrown out they will quite painfully enter Psionic Overflow. For this reason almost all Psions will refrain from any non consensual attempts to enter another's mind. In the case of people completely incapable of giving consent the limits change. A Psion in this situation may lightly tap on the target's emotional Aura to make their subconscious aware of their presence. If the person is in need of aid their subconscious will likely allow them inside in a limited sense. At all points the Psion must continuously reassure the target's subconscious that they are there to help. 

 

Instability:

Pagh, or Psionic energy does not like to remain in the physical world. It prefers its natural state in a non-corporeal form. When a Psion casts thusly, they are forcing their Pagh to do as they command. It will always take some degree of mental focus to maintain the existence of whatever the Psion has brought into creation, this applying to their passive abilities as well. This means that certain abilities like Psionic Constructs will slowly become unstable over time. This instability is characterized by spells becoming more difficult to maintain, loss of matter cohesion, and a headache who’s intensity corresponds to the level of instability present. For these reasons, casting with a high instability is generally considered ill-advised and very dangerous, even the most simple of spells causing Psionic Overflow as a result of the hubris of the Psion.

 

 There are two main causes of Instability, the Psion themselves and environmental factors which will be detailed down below.

 

Psion Caused Instability:

  • Casting the same ability repeatedly will very quickly increase instability, especially quick cast abilities.

  • An unstable mental state will cause a baseline increase to instability at the beginning of their casting.

  • Casting for too long will increase instability regardless of how well managed the spells are.

  • Exerting oneself too much with a spell is the fastest method of increasing instability. This is especially true when trying to lift a person.

 

 

 

Environmental factors:

  • The ability Empathy can actually backfire in some cases as it may become difficult to cast when in a room full of people expressing a strong, shared emotion. This can be something like a courtroom with a hated murderer on trial or a battlefield.

  • Certain deific shrines can host very negative emotional residue that negatively impacts the Psions emotional state, thereby creating an unstable environment and furthermore, unstable casting.

  • Specific dimensions are not conducive for the generation of Pagh and increase the baseline Instability. Other dimensions however can actually increase stability tenfold though it is often difficult to predict.

  1. Any attempts to enter a person's mind requires OOC consent from the target in all cases. During all steps of whatever the Psion is doing the target must be given in depth detail about what they are doing and the effects of this. Doing otherwise can be considered powergaming and will leave the Psion liable for the consequences that follow that infraction.

  2. The act of expanding and molding ones Aura requires two separate distinct emotes, the order they are in does not matter.

  3. A Psion may make 6 emotes in a row that involve the use of their abilities (This can be any combination of abilities except Aura Manipulation which must come first, some however require more than one to cast), exceeding this will cause a whiplash effect and will induce Psionic Overflow following a completely debilitating headache. 

  4. Using certain abilities for too long will also cause the same effects as stated in the previous redline. How much effort an ability/combination of abilities requires varies and is documented in each ability.

  5. Most abilities require the target to be within the Aura of the Psion. Generally a good rule of thumb is if the target is not in the Aura, it is currently out of the grasp of the Psion to detect or manipulate. The sole exception to this being Empathy.

  6. Regardless of how well the Psion manages their Pagh Stability they cannot surpass more than 4 emote chains in a CRP encounter. Even this will leave the Psion unable to reliably cast for 3 irl days.

  • Passive (P): The ability requires either an initiation emote/emotes or none. Afterwards the ability is freely usable and requires no further emotes to maintain it though some still wear down the caster.

  • Non-combative (N): Unable to be used in combat in any way. Certain abilities can be used during combat but are unable to be used directly against the opponent. For example: communicating with an ally on a battlefield using telepathy.

  • Combative (C): Able to be used directly in combat though this is not the abilities primary function and more based on technicality. A wrench is a tool, though it may make a good weapon when bludgeoned against a person's head. 

  • Offensive (O): A purely offensive ability without much other nuance to it.

  • Combinable (CO): The ability can be used in conjunction with another ability or requires it to reach its full potential.

  • Uncombinable (U): Cannot be combined with any other ability either due to balancing or incompatibility.

 

 

 

Lesser abilities:

Aura Manipulation (Active/Passive, Non-Combative, Combinable): “Our Aura is the tool to create our wonders, it is a part of all living things.”

 

The ability of Aura manipulation is the most fundamental of Psionic abilities, covering two distinct actions. The act of enlarging one's Aura and of molding it. By default, certain Psions, notably Lesser Psions have much greater difficulty conjuring an Aura let alone manipulating it. 

Mechanic’s:

For Lesser Psions: A Lesser Psion lacks the sheer power a Higher Psion has when conjuring an Aura. They have a passive willful Aura of zero meters and are only able to increase it to a one 1 meter dome around themselves; this requires [2] emotes and is quite strenuous. They may mold it to a max pin-point range of 2 meters with moderate strain, this requires [3] emotes.

 

For all other Psions: Most Psions have a passive Aura from the time of their Awakening. They may cast to increase the area this Aura covers through casting. [1] emote may be used to double the present size of the Psions passive Aura (If it were 1 meter it would expand to 2. If it was 4 it can expand to 8.) This Aura can be doubled a max of three times, each doubling requiring another emote to cast. Once the size of their Aura is enlarged the Psion must devote some mental strain to maintaining the desired size (The max 3 emotes would cause immense strain on all but the more adept Psions). This applies as well to molding though molding grants greater precision but less effective area. Essentially the Aura contorts into a tube that reaches out towards the Psions intended target. This requires a minimum of [1] emote per extension. If the  Aura was 2 meters for example a Psion could mold it to reach 2 meters pass that to a total range of 4 meters. This applies as well to enlarged Aura’s, though using both in the same [6] emote chain would be very straining.

  • Lesser Psions: Max passive range of Willful Aura is zero meters with a max casting range of 1 meter and a max pin point range of 2 meters, both of which are very straining and exhausting to the Lesser.

  • Enlightened Psions: Max passive range of 2 meters and able to extend it to a max cast range of 12 meters with a max pin-point range of 14 meters.

  1. When accounting for a combination with other abilities, the absolute max range of a passive Aura is 6 meters with a max casting range of 30 and a pinpoint range of 32. It is impossible to go beyond that limit for a single Psion without succumbing to Psionic overflow.

The ability to sense the emotions of other entities is a very fundamental experience of being a Psion. For Empath’s it is a greatly cherished gift that almost becomes a defining part of that person. Unlike most abilities Empathy deals in the reading of other entities Emotional Aura and, therefore, do not need to surround the target in their willful Aura to read the person's surface level emotions.

Empathy is the most basic and simple ability to view the world for a Psion. There are two forms, Active and Passive. Passive Empathy is shared by literally all Psions to some extent and requires no casting, it is in essence a whole distinct sense. It deals in subconsciously (Relatively speaking as most Psions lack a subconscious.) reading a person's overall headspace. This is very surface level and can easily be wrong if the target/targets are actively trying to hide something. Stronger feelings normally are read first, these include feelings of frustration, love, fear, pain, etc. Other more nuanced feelings however are limited to Active Empathy. This involves looking deeper into a person's emotional state, silencing the more loud emotions to discover the smaller almost subconscious emotions. This takes [1] emote and the target must be within the Psion's Willful Aura. The Target will also be completely aware of what the Psion is doing even if that target has no inherent Psionic talent. Many consider this a grave and disturbing breach of privacy and unless they consented to it, the Psion would immediately be booted out of the target's emotional Aura quite painfully without gaining any information. Attempts to persist will be met with stronger resistance from the targets subconscious defenses, this resistance is temporary and dissipates within a year (One week IRL.).

 

Tier Progression: Due to its very simple and weak nature most Psions, including Empaths are capable of using Passive Empathy to its full extent. Active Empathy shares this but it cannot be used by Empaths or Lesser Psions.

  1. Empathy can only detect very surface level emotions/general headspace and cannot be used to determine an entity's intent inherently. As well as this it is quite easy for an entity to lie subconsciously about their feelings. Very obvious emotional consequences however can give some indication as to the target's intent. Like a drunk and furious orc in a bar, this may very well lead to a fight, even an Olog could deduce that.

  2. Active Empathy requires that the target/targets are within the Psions willful Aura to be subject to it. All attempts to penetrate deeper into the mind of the target will be made completely aware of said target.

 

 

Bodily Management (Passive, Combative, Combinable): “Our minds are everchanging entites. Our body’s are our minds temple and therefore we must maintain it. ” 

By exploiting the placebo effect a Psion can achieve greater control over their bodily functions than a Physical. This results in Psions being able to control their metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Many changes, like hair color and bone structure take time, sometimes years to complete, others are more instant. The depth of their control is quite deep in more advanced Psions, some even able to put themselves in and out of a coma at will.

The ability to completely control one’s body takes some degree of mental focus but beyond that it is entirely passive, the Psion only needing to briefly think about what they want their body to do, then it does it. For Higher Psions this ability is an arduous curse since they lack a subconscious mind to regulate their body’s function without effort. They instead must put continuous mental awareness into ensuring their body is functioning normally. This includes quite literally all body processes, including intestinal movements. . . This is a general annoyance but does not negatively effect Psions beyond being tedious.

 

This ability can be used in combat to an extent. A Psion could for example control their adrenaline levels to maintain calm in normally shock-inducing situations both require a minimum of [2] emotes each if in combat. They could also use this ability to slow their heart rate and blood pressure to slow the bleeding of a wound though this would also make their movements weaker and more sluggish.

 

When used for the advancement of healing; the ability cannot be used in combat. However, this ability can be used to quicken the healing of wounds. This has a downside in that, depending on the severity of the damage, the Psion will be left incredibly frail, their body consuming it's own fat and muscle as fuel to heal the wound. When used in this matter wounds will heal 4x faster and the Psion can be left in a frail state for upwards of four years ic at the very worst, 1 year bear minimum

 

 

Tier Progression:

  • Lesser Psions: While they lack the utter precision that Higher Psions have; Lessers Psions are able to maintain their body within parameters that would ensure they never experience any form of body Dysphoria.

  • Awakened Psions: Newly Awakened Psions find themselves able to fully control their hair and eye color to a limited capacity. At present, due to their ID still existing they do not need to regulate their body.

  • Enlightened Psions: The Psion now must consciously manage their bodily functions. They are now able to regulate the growth of their hair and nails as well as skin color (Though this takes time to come into effect and shows up slowly over time.). The Psion can also create very vibrantly colored hair and eye color at this point.

  • Transcended Psions: The Psion now has complete and total control over their bodily functions. It is not uncommon for the Psion to experiment with different looks and hairstyles as they now have very fine tuned control over such things. They could make it so that their hairstyle remains the same no matter the conditions it is subjected to by regulating the secretion of certain oils to maintain a hold. This is just one example but there are many more.

 

 

 

Mental Healing (Active, Non-Combative, Combinable) “The mind in many ways is just like the body, it is able to be infected and become sick. And just like the body there are medicines to fix such illness, though they lack physical form.”

By using their advanced understanding of the mind a Psion can help to make repairs to a mentally ill individual. Whether the illness was inherent or caused by some outside source the Psion can effectively undo them using metaphysical interaction with the targets mind. This ability is also the sole treatment method for Psionic Overflow.

By gently probing the emotional Aura of the target a Psion can reach a general prognosis of their ailment. This action requires [2] emotes, one to detect the target's emotional Aura and its shape, then one to begin sensing its irregularities. These both can be done without the target's consent as it is simply a light viewing. Following this the target may be asked to give their consent to penetrate deeper into their mind. If the target is unable to give consent the Psion must be very careful should they decide to move forward (Please refer to the consent clause for details on this.)


Assuming the Psion is allowed in (This taking [1] emote to indicate their entering into the mind of their target.), their healing work may begin. Unfortunately Mental Healing is somewhat limited in the extent of damage it can heal, similar to how it is only slightly hard to put a piano back together after putting it through a wood chipper. Once the entering emote has been finished the player can make any emotes they wish to visualize the act of healing the target's mind. Mental healing can repair most forms of psychosis, coma’s, and madness/insanity. Most forms of damage require multiple visits, especially if the cause is extreme. Magically or deifically caused mental damage however is very difficult to undo. Requiring at times 10 visits to undo the major damage. Notably, Lesser Psions are fairly adept at this ability, rivaling the Transcended in their skill. The strain this ability causes corresponds to the severity of the mental illness.

 

 

Tier Progression:

  • Lesser Psions: While they are not as versatile as Higher Psions; Lesser Psions are actually quite inherently proficient at this ability, easily rivaling the Transcended in their skill. Moderate to severe are able to be treated in 2 visits or less. Magical or otherwise incoherent madness however cannot be cured by them.

  • Awakened Psions: While lacking experience initially; Awakened Psions are still able to repair most moderate forms of mental damage while treatment for total madness still eludes them. Most treatments by this tier take around 5-6 visits to completely repair the damage done.

  • Enlightened Psions: Now able to treat a much wider variety of illnesses; Enlightened Psions are fairly proficient at this ability, being able to now treat patients that are too incoherent to give consent. Merely 3-4 visits are necessary for most forms of moderate to severe mental damage. Magically induced madness however is still too far beyond their reach to treat at all.

  • Transcended Psions: There are few methods in our world able to treat mental damage with the same precision and efficiency of a Transcended. Moderate to severe damage is easily cured within 1-2 visits. Magically caused or otherwise major mental damage however requires very special care and in extreme cases, requires a Soul Joining to rebuild the foundation of the patient’s mind. In all other cases magical/major damage requires 6-8 treatments depending largely on the damage and the cause. Deifically induced damage is by far the most difficult to repair and is, at times, inoperable.

  1. Following a Mental Healing treatment there will be a 1 week cooldown period where it can be used on the same target again.

  2. Mental Healing is incapable of outright curing majorly chronic mental illnesses. An example of this is the insanity that all elves face during the much later years of their life as well as major magical damage. The Psion can treat this illness, but eventually the treatments will become less and less effective. Becoming completely useless after around 25 treatments.

  3. In the case that mental damage is caused during an event the Psion must coordinate with the ET/ST running the event to get a better grasp of the damage and if it can be cured. Doing otherwise is considered power gaming and leaves the Psion player directly liable for whatever punishment is given.

 

 

Clairsentience (Active/Passive, Non-Combative, Uncombinable) “The sight of the physical form is far too limited for me to achieve my goal, as such I must look beyond my physical senses to see the world as it truly is.”

 

By infusing their ID into their Aura and shutting off their vision a Psion is able to gain awareness of everything within their Aura’s radius. This view is omni-directional though it is not very good at picking up movement and complex objects can be very disorientating to the point of nausea. This opens the door to the first Psionic traps; traps that are meant solely for certain Psionic abilities.

By shutting off their main vision a Psion can extend their awareness to everything within their Aura. This takes [2] emotes to activate and [1] to release but is otherwise passive. The vision given is very surreal, feeling like a mix between normal sight and echolocation at the same time in all directions and only extends to the edge of the Psions Willful Aura. This ability has vulnerabilities however, fast moving objects and things that bear a great deal of complexity in terms of angles and surface area will disorientate the Psion, the latter being so effective at this that it can even induce Psionic Overflow instantly. The advantage to this ability is a depth of field Physicals can barely comprehend. Objects and people within the Aura of the Psion are easily identifiable. The texture and heat of the objects within their vision are given as well. Psions find it difficult to describe to others precisely what they see.

  • Lesser Psions: Lacking a passive Aura; Lesser Psions find this ability unbelievably difficult to pull off since they must generate their Willful Aura. Their sight would be very shaky, even slight movements in their immediate environment causing intense disorientation.

  • Awakened Psions: Newly Awakened Psions will often be seen using this ability (albeit with difficulty and inexperience) quite frequently as it is very intoxicating to use. Due to having a small passive Aura they aren’t in much risk of disorientation but if they extend their Aura into an active one they may very well experience it.

  • Enlightened Psions: Now more disciplined in Psionics in general; Enlightened find themselves using this ability with greater moderation as their passive Aura is now large enough to cause disorientation more frequently than Awakened. As such this ability is mainly used when alone or in a peaceful, still environment. 

  • Transcended Psions: The Transcended unfortunately aren’t often seen using this ability due to the sheer amount of information they receive when activated. This is primarily due to the range Transcended have with their Aura. Usually a Transcended uses this to find lost objects in cluttered rooms but even this is risky and they would constantly be bordering Psionic Overflow especially if their Aura is active.

  2. A Psionic trap made to spring to this ability must be somewhat large, basketball sized is the bare minimum, any smaller and it would not have the desired effect. However a trap can be made completely unintentionally by creating multiple less complex objects within the area of the Psions Willful Aura.

  3. Due to how intoxicating this ability is to newer Psions and even more experienced ones; it is not difficult to overuse the ability and induce Psionic Overflow by accident. The view is so glorious that it actively numbs the strain caused by this ability.

  4. This ability cannot phase through solid materials, a wall will easily block sight. It can however look through cracks and around corners so long as it remains within the confines of the Psions Willful Aura. Glass is the sole exception to this though it blocks the more metaphysical senses while allowing visual information through, basically reducing the Psion back to using their eyes.

 

 

 

Soul Joining (Active, Non-combative, Uncombinable) : “My mind to your mind, with our souls we join and become one. We are not alone.”

 

Considered the most intimate and close two beings can get on a metaphysical level. Soul Joining is not for the faint of heart, it has quite literal life-long effects. It deals in merging the Ego of two or more people (Though doing it with more than two is somewhat dangerous as this leaves the potential for a battle for dominance to occur which will be expanded upon in the Mind Guild ability.). This merges the entities memories, thoughts, beliefs, fears, wants, and feelings into a singular new entity. This ability is used only for the most major mental damage as a sort of mental reset and as an intense bonding experience between very close people. Because of this, Soul Joining is very seldom used by any Psion.

This unique ability requires above all else, consent from all parties. Attempting a Soul Joining is already dangerous, attempting to do so without consent is considered suicide. At this stage the Psion will explain to their partner what is about to occur and begin having them partition off parts of their mind that they don’t want seen. To join souls the Psion will often make physical contact (This is required for Lesser Psions) with various pressure points around the face though Higher Psions do not need to do this, most still do to ensure success. This action requires [1] activation, emote and complete serenity in the surroundings. Following this the Psion will carefully enter their partner's mind and will rest there for a moment so that their partner has time to acclimate to having another person's consciousness inside their minds. This is a very delicate stage so it will take as long as both people need to become comfortable. Finally, the Psion will begin to join the ego of both themselves and their partner in a process that is not fully understood. The two will suddenly seize up as their consciousness merges, at this stage there is no longer any risk and they may disconnect at their leisure. During this neither can move but they are capable of speech albeit slightly terrifying since both people will speak in harmonious sync. Once disconnected both people will have a profound understanding of one another and all memories not Partitioned off will be retained.

 

The Main point of this ability is for extreme cases of mental damage and for bringing acolytes seeking to become a Psion closer to Awakening. It as well has uses in mass information transfer as it is completely unique between the two people involved.

 

OOC Note: I would recommend that both players have an in depth discussion about both of their characters either before or after using this ability.

 

 

Tier Progression:

  • Lesser Psions: Ironically the most skilled users of this ability besides the Transcended. Lesser Psions are able to establish a connection to initiate the ritual with relative ease assuming they are able to make physical contact. There is a low risk of a vie for dominance, a roll of 1/30 where 1 will result in the Psions death must be made (Non-PK).

  • Awakened Psions: While lacking in prowess, an Awakened is usually able to initiate the ritual within an hour or so, physical contact is heavily advised. There is a moderate risk here with a requirement of 1/15 where 1 will result in the Psions death.

  • Enlightened Psions: Being much more attuned and skilled than the Awakened, Enlightened Psions find themselves much more adept at initiating the ritual taking around 30 minutes to begin. They will now be able to Soul join with a few limited non-corporeal entities like ghosts though this increases the time to begin the ritual. The risk is now fairly low only requiring a roll of 1/25 where a 1 will result in the Psions death.

  • Transcended Psions: Transcended are truly exceptional when it comes to this ability. Requiring little time to begin the ritual. On top of this, most sapient entities are able to be joined so long as they are able to give consent. The risk of death for the Psion at this point is negligible, requiring a 1/50 roll for success.

Reincarnation (Passive, Non-Combative, Uncombinable): “For us Psions, death is only another part of the path.”

 

By their nature, Psions are to some extent, detached from their physical forms. At the point of death they are able to fully detach their consciousness from the physical form. Giving the Psion two options, Phoenix reincarnation or Total reincarnation. Both can be chosen though there are circumstances that make total reincarnation the only option or prevent reincarnation altogether.

 

Phoenix Reincarnation Mechanic’s:

This form of reincarnation is fairly straightforward but most importantly circumvents the monks revival. It starts with the Psion detaching their consciousness from their body. In this state their soul remains at the core of the newly freed ball of consciousness. During this point the soul itself remains protected within the shell of the individual's consciousness, existing in a state of flux for the remainder of the process. The ball of the Psions very existence will then find a suitable area in which to begin reforming a physical form. 

 

This is a fairly long stage, taking upwards of a year depending on the skill of the Psion. The body is reformed by converting raw energy from the environment into matter. This isn’t fully understood and is believed to be a result of the full detachment and lack of a body allowing the Psion to achieve things that even the Transcended cannot comprehend. The body that is reformed will look exactly how the Psion perceives their physical form. Due to the massive consumption of energy needed to form physical matter the area the Psion is reborn will be devastated by frost and dead plant life. When the body is complete the ball of consciousness will instantly inhabit it. An unfortunate result of this process is that the Psion will be without clothes in a completely random area and unable to use their abilities for 1 year. No memories of what killed them or their time as a ball of thinking energy are transferred over. A Psion must then return after acquiring clothing to return the energy they took by meditating and using energy conversion to return the environment to what it was. This can take an upwards of three years and may require repeated visits to the area. Not doing this within a year of reincarnation will count as murder and theft from the universe and shares the same consequences. There is a looming threat however should a Psion die too frequently. Each death after the first will require a roll that progressively gets smaller; it starts with a roll of 1/20 where a 1 is a PK. Should they survive and die again this goes down to 1/10, then 1/5, and finally a 1/2. This resets after [4] months irl from the date of the first death. (This is exclusively meant to ensure that death is still something to be avoided at all costs and that people don’t put their characters in suicidal situations.)

 

 

Total Reincarnation:

When a Psion has reached what they believe to be the end of their lives or at the time of their death their soul was too weak to remake a physical form a Psion will enter Total Reincarnation. This means a Psion will not obtain a new form, instead they transform into an entirely new entity. In essence, they shed their consciousness but retain their soul, the very base personality traits and mannerisms that the Psion has in their previous life. These aren’t memories, rather, they are things that transcend consciousness itself. This includes past relationships, bonds to people that were so strong they went beyond death itself. What the Psion gets reborn into us largely up to their personality. Sometimes it’s people, other times it’s animals. It should be made clear that, while their greater soul does transfer over for the first few incarnations; the Psion is limited to the intelligence level of whatever they become. 

 

Interactions between incarnations and their past relationships is a quite beautiful experience. While they don’t have any memories from their past life they retain a (mildly uncanny to the incarnation) familiarity and feeling of compassion for that individual. For Psions, even Lesser Psions, it is not very difficult to know a creature is a reincarnation. It is not discouraged in the Psionic community to continue relationships with incarnations of their old friends or partners. It should be noted that while they retain the soul of their past life, their consciousness is completely different and subject to change drastically. On top of this, once the incarnation dies they indeed may reincarnate again, but the trends, personality, and mannerisms will experience diminished similarities with the original Psion, each death transforming them more and more until their soul is now a new person.

  • Enlightened Psions: Now being fully taught in the art of spiritual detachment the Psion can now regenerate their body in much less time taking merely 2 years.

  • Transcended Psions: Transcended are inherently detached from worldly needs and needs of the flesh. As such not only do they only take just 1 year to reform their body, but they also may choose what their next Total reincarnation will be, either animal or humanoid.

Mediation has been used by various cultures and even other magics as a way to hone the mind and soul. For Psions this is no exception, they use meditation to hone their abilities and in times of crisis, find solutions that they would have otherwise missed. In this state they are completely helpless. Their abilities however become mildly strengthened and honed for a short time afterwards. This ability is also a prerequisite for some more advanced spells and combinations.

To enter Meditation a Psion will need [6] emotes, a full spell chain to make use of the Meditation buff. The emotes can be any flavor the player wants. Upon completion of the meditation the character receives the Meditation buff for a total of [14] emotes. During which the base emote chain a Psion has is increased from [6] to [7]. As well as this the strain for abilities is reduced by 20%. This allows for the Psion to use their abilities much more frequently as well as combine otherwise too strenuous to cast combinations of abilities like Clairsentience and Psychometry, a powerful and very dangerous combination. The Meditation can be maintained for as long as the Psion wishes.

 

 

Premonitions:

During meditation a Psion may experience brief visions and thoughts that are not their own. It is not understood what precisely causes this and is open to speculation. At times names and locations may make themselves clear to the Psion leading them on a quest to discover the cause. 

(Purely ooc note): This is meant as an ic method for a Psion to find a character that needs guidance of some kind. ET can make use of this for their events if they so desire, but due to the low clarity of one person the details would be vague.

Enlightened Abilities

 

Mind Link (Initially Active, Passive otherwise, Non-Combative, Uncombinable): “Great minds think alike, for Psions, that statement is literal.”

Considered to be the lesser form of Soul Joining; Mind Link acts as a bridge between minds rather than merging them. The soul distinction between the two abilities is the retention of one's individuality while being linked. Some abilities require this as a prerequisite, especially ones that involve more than one person.

 

Mechanic’s:

A Mind link is a mostly passive ability though it requires a minimum of [3] emotes outside of combat to begin. All involved must be in contact with the Willful Aura of the Psion who initiated the link. If anyone steps out of the Willful Aura it will snap back and induce Psionic Overflow in all linked individuals, regardless of whether they are a Psion. The link that is formed has various levels of depth based upon who it is done with. An Enlightened linking to a Physical for example only share base thought. A sort of low resolution form of information. This link isn’t very useful for much and can only share very basic information. Two Transcended linking together on the other hand is much more powerful. This type of Link is so strong between the individuals that it is close to Soul Joining. They are fully aware of one anothers senses like sight and hearing but also of each other's thoughts and intentions. As well as this they share the strain of casting spells, allowing one person to act as a sort of capacitor to prevent Psionic Overflow in the case of overuse, this has a diminishing return however. Meaning that having a Mind Link does not mean you can cast twice as much or twice as hard. The buff is equivalent to half of an extra person. This means that the pair might as well cast separately. Instead a Mind Link is intended to mitigate the risks of certain abilities like Clairsentience and Psychometry. This mitigation is mild, if the roll required was 1/20 where 1 is a failure the roll would be increased to 1/25. This ability is a requirement for the Mind Guild ability. Certain talented individuals are also preferred to Link with. Various mages are difficult to form and maintain a Link with depending on how their magic reacts to Psionics, if they are compatible a Psion will need to take extra care to ensure the link is stable.

  • Lesser Psions: While unable to form a link themselves, Lesser Psions are still considered useful to Mind Link with for specific logic heavy applications like advanced potion brewing. 

  • Awakened Psions: Like Lessers, Awakened Psions are unable to form a link themselves. Links formed with them are usually done with their teachers or as a backup when more experienced Psions are not available. They offer very little in terms of risk mitigation.

  • Enlightened Psions: Considered now Journeymen in forming a Mind Link. Enlightened are now able to form links themselves and act as useful Link to more advanced Psions. They may at times find it difficult to form Links with Physicals though.

  • Transcended Psions: Transcended find themselves easily able to Link with most entities that consent to the act. Even Links with Physicals are much deeper than what an Enlightened could achieve. On top of this they are even able to share sensory information with Physicals though thoughts and intentions remain somewhat of a whisper and difficult to decipher.

Due to the first law of Psionics this ball does not actually harm the target, rather it can either sap the strength and energy of the target or for the more cruel Psions; be used as a method of inflicting artificial pain.

A Psionic Blast is a non-lethal method of incapacitating a target harmlessly. It works by disrupting the Emotional Aura of the target and tearing off a small part of their life essence in the process. This doesn’t harm the target but it does drain their stamina and induces fatigue to a degree specified by how much the Blast was charged. If enough blasts impact a person they will simply pass out unconscious. The Kinetic energy generated by this spell is caused by the Blast impacting the targets Emotional Aura and converting the Psionic energy into kinetic energy. This means the spell stays true to the first law of Psionics. All projectiles no matter the tier share the same thrown speed. The Blasts move both in terms of speed and aerodynamics like a thrown frisbee. The Blast can be given an Arc while in the air though this isn’t so extreme to the point where it can loop corners.

 

There are three tiers of Psionic blast corresponding to how many emotes were dedicated to charging it. [1] emote Will generate a minor blast. This ball of energy will sap 5% of the targets overall strength and carry the kinetic energy of a light yet firm shove. [2] emotes dedication will give a moderate blast. This will sap the target's strength by 10% and carries the kinetic energy of a solid punch thrown by an average human. [3] emotes dedication will produce a powerful blast and is the only tier able to inflict pain. It will sap 15% of the target's strength and carries the kinetic energy of a very rough shove that has the potential to stagger a target significantly. If one wishes to inflict pain upon their target they will need to add an extra emote for a total of [4] emotes. The pain inflicted by this is purely mental and does not last longer than 25 minutes narrative time. The severity of it is not debilitating but it is rather significant, feeling as though the skin had been sanded off and the muscles bashed by rapids. Conversely, one can hold onto the ball of energy and infuse it into a punch. This has few differences from throwing it other than the kinetic energy stacking with the punch itself.

  • Enlightened Psions: Enlightened are able to cast the first two tiers of Psionic blast with moderate difficulty with the third tier. They are not yet able to inflict pain with this spell however and are only capable of sapping the target's strength.

They are able to through a mix of different tiers separately to achieve a specific degree of energy sapping. They are also more than capable of inflicting pain with the tier three blast.

These being Surface Telepathy, Shallow Telepathy, and finally, Deep Telepathy. Typically a Psion will converse with Physicals using verbal communication as it is mildly strenuous to use telepathy with them. With other Psions this is not the case and they can commune with one another without much effort at all.

Telepathy is largely a passive ability. When using Telepathy to communicate with another character it should be kept in dms either IG or on discord. Telepathy will be a very surreal experience for a Physical and how one reacts to it is largely up to them. Some may be fascinated, others terrified, especially with Deep Telepathy. Despite its discrete nature it is completely normal for a Psion to make hand gestures as if they were still talking verbally while using Telepathy.

 

Surface Telepathy: Surface Telepathy is the most simple form of Telepathy for Psions. It revolves around the transfer of verbal words between individuals' thoughts. One must be at least Enlightened to use this with Physicals though this causes a moderate amount of mental strain to do. It is also the only version of telepathy that is completely indiscriminate and cannot be targeted directly. This means that all people within the Psions Willful Aura will hear the telepathic message in their minds. Obviously this defeats the purpose in some circumstances and it is far more prudent to use Shallow Telepathy instead. Unfortunately the Physicals will be unable to respond back Telepathically anyway.

 

Shallow Telepathy: The most common form of Telepathy for Psions. This version is slightly more advanced and deals in not just the transfer of verbal words but basic yet essential contextual thoughts associated with the information as well. Put more simply, the Psion is sending concepts and ideas rather than simple verbal words. Enlightened can use this on Physicals but doing so requires at least [2] emotes and it will cause moderate strain on the Psion in question. Between fellow Psions this is much less strenuous and can be done passively. This creates a very telepathy heavy environment in places with large amounts of Psions. Unlike Surface Telepathy, Shallow Telepathy allows Physicals to respond to Telepathy with their own thoughts should the Psion decide to strengthen the connection to that point, in which case it would take [3] emotes instead of2.

 

Deep Telepathy: It is quite rare to see a Psion using Deep Telepathy as for most, Shallow Telepathy is more than sufficient. Instead, Deep Telepathy is more for very important information and emergencies. This form of Telepathy is quite complicated and deals in the transfer of memories, images, and various other deeply stored thoughts and opinions. This allows for near instant and discrete transfers of information. Because of its complex nature it is near impossible to lie about the contents of whatever data is transferred. This creates a dangerous scenario for the Psion as this now falls under the consent clause. Only the Transcended can use this on Physicals and even then it takes [5] emotes and the poor Physical will be plagued by combatively debilitating headaches for [3] days irl following the transfer. This applies to fellow Psions as well though it instead applies to their abilities for [1] irl day.

  • Lesser Psion: While unable to initiate communication themselves, a Lesser is still able to respond to both Surface and Shallow Telepathy with ease. For this reason Enlightened Psions are known to fond over Lessers as they serve as a sort of middle ground between Physicals and Psions.

  • Awakened Psions: Still unable to form a Telepathic connection with other entities but are similarly conducive to responding and receiving as Lessers.

  • Enlightened Psions: Now able to form a Telepathic connection. Though Enlightened are not masters they are able to use all three forms of Telepathy albeit with moderate to severe difficulty.

  • Transcended Psions: It is uncommon to see a Transcended not using Telepathy to communicate at all. For them, it is as easy to form a Shallow connection with a Physical as it is to expand their Aura, only requiring [1] emote. Their utter fluidity with this spell makes it almost a part of their identity.

  1. One cannot “force” a message into the head of another entity. It is quite easy though rude to simply sever the connection themselves. Physicals are also capable of this inherently and instinctively.

The sole exception to this is an individual under the influence of the later stages of Subconscious Infiltration. But the person would need to be quite heavily influenced if to get any useful information.

 

 

 

 

Psychometry (Active, Non-Combative, Combinable): “The universe is full of mysteries and odd anomaly’s. With Patience and training however, we can make some of those mysteries easier to understand .”

This ability is similar to the Lesser ability Clairsentience in some respects. It allows the Psion to gain information on the physical world. The difference is that Psychometry also views into the metaphysical as well, merging the two sights into one, giving the Psion truly unprecedented sight. This means a Psion could view the very essence of another being, their soul. This is far more dangerous however as there are things both in the physical world and the metaphysical one that are not meant to be seen or comprehended by mortal eyes.

Unlike Clairsentience this ability does not work to extend one's awareness, instead it focuses heavily on comprehension and understanding. It works by emitting a cone outwards from the Psions head encompassing an area of 3 meters out and 3 meters wide though this can be lowered at will. This will take [2] emotes to initiate and [1] for range alterations. After this each emote will be dedicated to maintaining the ability until the task is complete or is interrupted.

 

This spell works by condensing one's Pagh and giving it an extra infusion of their ID to form a wide beam of semi-conscious non-corporeal energy that transcends the physical realm. This means they are essentially peeling back the layers of realty to view deeper into something. There is much risk behind this unfortunately as there are things no mortal should ever bear witness too. Most curious is the need to not look at other entities. Due to its ability to view the metaphysical a Psion is fully capable of viewing a person's soul. This can either be the most beautiful thing a Psion ever see’s or so horrifying that it leaves them blind for an extended period of time (Around 2 days irl). These risks mean that this ability is more for use in gaining a better understanding of an object or area. In this case a Psion is limited to asking and answering the following questions about the location or object:

 

  • What emotional residue lingers here?

  • Was this place/object important to someone?

  • Is there something living here?

  • Are there signs of Psionic spells having been casted and if so what kind?

  • What was the main cause of the damage if any exists?

  • Approximately how old is this?

  • Does this object/place have any metaphysical properties? (IE, this can mean literally anything magical or otherwise special it is not at all specific about how it is metaphysical, just whether or not it is.)

 

Ultimately the goal of these questions is to gain a better grasp of a location's/object’s history and allow the Psion to make educated guesses about what to do with certain things. Usually though if the object is magical they will find a Transfiguration mage or a Seer. It is a jack of all trades type of scanning and Seer’s as well as Transfiguration mages are far more effective at getting more specific details about certain things. The view the Psion gets is primarily ambiguous and vague, only granting small clues and hints rather than solving the mystery entirely.

  3. While it can be used to tell if an item holds energy of some kind it cannot be used to determine the type of energy. This includes enchanted items. Voidal Feeling will often be needed to gain a better grasp.

By influencing both their Willful and Emotional Aura to work in sync the Psion is able to manipulate the physical world through the addition of pressure upon an object's surface. Fundamentally this form of Telekinesis is worlds different from the voidal magic’s of old. Namely because it is unable to generate the momentum needed to actually throw objects with much combative effectiveness at all. Psions can shove people and with great difficulty lift them with this power but due to its lack of ability to add or change momentum effectively it is not a primary ability to use in Combat.

Psionic Telekinesis is considered a very versatile ability and has many applications for a Psion. It primarily deals in the application of pressure to the surface of an object that they increase until the object moves. For newer Psions this spell is tricky to learn due to how fundamentally different it is from most other Psionic abilities. A Psion must apply a very precise amount of effort to levitate objects in general. Depending on the weight this is done in stages. If the object is very heavy (Around 100 pounds or 45 kilos for our oversea’s people.) multiple emotes will be required to lift it. [1] emote is capable of generating 50 pounds or 22 kilos of pressure evenly across the surface. This means a 100 pound or 45 kilo object would require a total of [2] emotes to fully lift the object. The object would then slowly lift up as if being gently lifted by a hand. Moving it horizontally does not require nearly as much force but still moves rather slowly, never reaching let alone exceeding the force a Psion could generate by simply throwing the object themselves. On top of this Psionic Telekinesis needs to lock on to the target to actually move it. This means that rapidly moving objects are exceedingly difficult to influence with Telekinesis, meaning a fired arrow has no chance of being stopped or even slightly redirected. Gently thrown and stationary objects on the other hand can be caught. During all of this the object must remain within the Willful Aura of the Psion or it would come clattering down and the Psion would be stunned for [1] emote.

 

In combat this ability has varying degrees of use. Due to its even distribution of pressure and inability to actually throw anything Telekinesis only really finds use in knocking things over and at best roughly shoving a person back. Though it is possible, it is generally very difficult to lift another person, both due to requiring them to stand in the same general area (A area of 9 blocks squared.) and the fact that their Emotional Aura actively pushes back against the pressure, making it less effective on people. If the person weighed in at 200 pounds for example (Or 90 kilos) they’d need a bare minimum of [4] emotes to be lifted and the strain of the act would be immense. A Psion can charge up a kinetic burst, with an upper limit of [5] emotes. This charged blast would hold 250 pounds of force (Or 113 kilos for you tea drinking bastards.). It should be noted that a character can brace themselves for the blast. This strengthens their Emotional Aura and makes the shove even less effective though the individual will be sent skidding back but otherwise unfazed. Objects with high surface area and low mass are also very susceptible to Telekinesis bursts.

 

 

Levitation:

It is indeed possible for the most wise and powerful Psions to levitate. This carries more than just an aesthetic purpose however, as it also carries spiritual significance for Psions. Levitation signifies detachment from the world while maintaining a physical form, in essence allowing the Psion to ascend just a little closer to absolute transcendence of the mind and body. 

 

For these reasons; when a Psion levitates they gain a moderate buff to the stability of their spells while reducing the risk of Psionic Overflow as a result of overuse. It takes [1] emote to begin levitation and a second to deactivate it. During this time however the emote chain is reduced to [5] emotes instead of [6] emotes. This is a trade off for the raise in stability. This emote debuff takes precedence over the Meditation buff. The height of the levitation is locked at ½ a meter above the ground though it can be less than this. The Psion May float horizontally at a max speed of a brisk walk, though trying to move too fast will very quickly tire them.

  • Enlightened Psions: While struggling with the higher tiers of strength, an Enlightened is still capable of many interesting feats using Telekinesis. While unadvised to use it in combat they are able to firmly shove people using telekinesis in self defense or otherwise. While the Enlightened cannot levitate like the Transcended, they may use it to slow and by extension lessen a fall from a great height.

  • Transcended Psions: True masters of influencing the material world; Transcended are known to use Telekinesis quite frequently for menial tasks like opening doors and lifting cups. In terms of combat a Transcended is excellent at keeping people at bay using this spell like an extension of themselves. Levitation as well becomes available, allowing them to achieve the greatest wonders of Psionics.

  1. Due to the Emotional Aura it is impossible to pull objects off a person or pull on specific limbs to trip them. The push and pull mechanic is reserved to very broad regions since it evenly distributes the weight across the entire entity. Dropped objects can be affected however.

  3. This cannot be used to pick locks or pull levers. It can be used to open unlocked doors however.

  4. A Psion cannot use this ability to boost their jumps or increase their speed. It can be used to mildly aid in acrobatics but only to the degree of an average acrobat. Front flips, back flips etc.

  5. Levitation cannot be combined with Meditation in any way.

 

 

 

Psionic Constructs (Active, Combative, Combinable): “Imagination is a doorway to the fantastical and beautiful.”

For a Psion, especially the Enlightened and Transcended, the difference between energy and matter are minute and flexible. By condensing their Pagh they are able to form physical objects. These can be anything though notably these constructs are very fragile and most interestingly; while they can be made to look completely real. All entities will instinctively know that they are not. Being hit by a Psionic construct on its own has been compared to a gentle summer breeze upon one's face. However, combined with certain other abilities a Construct can be used to create non-lethal weapons.

Psionic constructs are considered quite an advanced skill and typically reserved to being the last ability an Enlightened learns before becoming Transcended. This spell works by creating very thin layers of matter from pure Psionic energy. These objects can be anything within general reasoning and can take on any color and texture the Psion desires. Fake water and fire are included in this and while they do not share any of the properties of the real thing are quite real looking. Most objects are hollow, weak, and brittle due to the low conversion rate of energy to matter, requiring a lot of energy for a small amount of mass. Because of this a Psionic construct has little to no weight and high volume.

 

Psionic Weapons: By combining a Psionic constructed sword with Psionic blast a very special weapon is created. [2] emotes will create a basic Psionic weapon that is similar to Psionic Blast in that it saps the energy off entities when hit. However, the blade becomes much harder, able to clash with steel weapons without shattering. Instead of a kinetic burst the weapons edge obtains a very high degree of friction, preventing sliding when clashing blades. This, along with the fact that that weapon is mostly weightless, creates a quite fascinating fighting style that makes parries quite difficult. How much energy the blade saps corresponds directly to the tier of Psionic blast that was infused into the weapon, this also applies to emotes as well. [1] emote must always be dedicated to the formation of the weapon itself and the remaining emotes for the tier of Psionic blast that is to be infused into the weapon. 

 

When a Psionic blade cuts into a person it does not actually physically damage them. Instead it saps their strength by 5%, 10%, or 15% depending on the Tier of Psionic blast that is mixed with it. This also determines the size of the actual weapon, 5% creates dagger sized weapons, 10% creates normal short swords, and 15% can create large weapons like claymores and spears. Attacks to certain parts of the body can do much more however. An attack that would have severed a head or pierced the heart can remove upwards of 50% of that person's stamina instantly. Lost limb attacks will pull 20%. Cleaving through the mid-section will remove 25%. Actively impaling someone with the weapon will pull the relevant amount out every emote that it remains within that person. A fully powered tier three Psionic weapon requires [4] emotes to cast and can be maintained for 30 minutes narrative time. Obviously certain weapon sizes are incapable of some attacks, dagger sized for example cannot reach the heart or pass fully through the neck.

 

Ethereal Limbs: A Psion can in fact create artificial limbs for themselves only. These limbs look fairly similar to their former limbs but have a slight glowing hue to it. They share the same level of strength and dexterity as their former limbs as well. Combatively these limbs are not a detriment but they are certainly not an advantage either as unlike normal Constructs; these limbs cannot be infused with Psionic blast. Interestingly the limb does not become unstable over time. It is believed this is due to it being tied to the Psions phantom limb, creating an inherent stabilizer. In combat if the arm experiences damage that is sufficient enough to break the skin and sprain/fracture a joint or bone the arm will vanish and the Psion will need to dedicate [3] emotes to reform it.

  • Enlightened Psions: It is not at all uncommon to see an Enlightened constantly creating new constructs to entertain themselves as well as others. They are able to create fairly complex items like books and flowers with moderate effort. In terms of combat they are unable to create a tier 3 weapon but are able to actively defend themselves otherwise.

  • Transcended Psions: There are few spectacles more fantastical than a Transcended showing off. They are able to, with immense effort, change the environment within their Aura into a flowery meadow or a frozen tundra. They are capable of creating objects with such complex colors and textures that they are rarely ever bored. In terms of weapons they have not only mastered the ability to create a pain inflicting tier 3 Psionic weapon but also can wield the weapon with profound grace and skill.

  1. Psionic weapons cannot cut objects or phase through anything that is not living tissue. They are actually quite blunt and rounded.

  2. This ability can not be used at the same time as Psionic Force Field.

  4. No matter how real they may look a Construct can never fool anyone into believing they are real.

  5. If the weapon is knocked from the Psions hands it will dissipate and the Psion will need to conjure a second weapon.

  6. Plate armor can be penetrated with a Psionic weapon though this will take similar effort to piercing it with a normal weapon.

 

 

 

Psionic Force Field (Active, Combative, Combinable): “A sword and a shield is a sign of a warrior, a man who only holds a shield clearly only wishes for the fighting to stop.”

Unlike a steel shield held by a warrior, or a magical one made by a mage, a force field is not a solid wall that deflects attacks. It instead works by creating a consistent area of outward kinetic energy that causes attacks to bounce off instead. This Force Field is not perfect and is quite weak to piercing attacks from low-surface area objects like arrows and spears.

By combining aspects from Telekinesis and Psionic Constructs a Psion is able to raise a defensive force field at the border of their Willful Aura. There are two types of fields a Psion can generate. Specific Fields and Total Fields. Unlike other defensive abilities a Psionic Force field does not dissipate kinetic energy. If a Psion were to try and block an explosion for example they wouldn’t be harmed by the explosion itself but they would be sent flying due to the surface area of the field condensing directly onto them. For this reason this spell is very circumstantial and will not always be the best defensive option for the Psion. Notably, the Field is also weak to voidal magic.

 

Specific Fields: Specific Fields are characterized by smaller regional area specific Fields that are very quick to cast but are not very strong or cover a large area. A 1 meter squared Field for example requires [2] emotes and each emote after that increases the size of the Field by 1 meter. The Field can withstand most standard melee attacks like slashes and bashes from blunt weapons, piercing attacks however are only slowed and can move past the field with moderate ease. This Field can be generated at any point and at any angle within the Psions Willful Aura. Should the Field shatter or be pierced the Psion will be stunned for [1] emote.

 

Total Fields: Total Fields are the superior version of Specific Fields and are characterized by their all encompassing protection. Importantly, the Field cannot be raised past more than one expansion of the Psions Willful Aura. Meaning the absolute max range of a Total Field for any Psion is 8 meters. The Spell takes [3] emotes to cast and can be maintained for a max of [8] emotes though any past [5] emotes will guarantee Psionic Overflow once it is lowered. If the full [8] emotes are used the Psion will be unable to cast for 3 years narrative time. The Field itself is quite strong, able to withstand a large variety of attacks. It takes a total of [6] attacking emotes or [3] direct hits from a voidal spell to shatter the field. If the Field is shattered before it is lowered the Psion will die. (Non-Pk)

 

 

Tier Progression:

  • Enlightened Psions: While unable to create a Total Field with any amount of ease an Enlightened is able to make use of both abilities to effectively defend themselves from attack.

  • Transcended Psions: The Transcended are able to use Force Fields with uncanny precision. While they are not always able to stop people from getting harmed they can ensure that they stay alive by lessening the blows at the very least.

  1. Due to the wide range of ultimate spells voidal mages have it is hard to definitively calculate what would outright shatter a Field. As a general rule of thumb I believe it to be best to allow the Psion the chance to lower the Field and take the brunt of the blast onto themselves if they so wish. If a consensus is not reached a ST may be required to determine the outcome on a case by case basis.

  2. The Willful Aura of the Psion can only undergo one expansion in order for it to be compatible enough to cast a Field.

  3. Blunt force kinetic energy, due to not being nullified and only partially absorbed by the field will push evenly across the entire surface area of the Psion. Meaning that, if a Psion were foolish enough to try and block a cannonball with a field, not only would the field instantly shatter but the Psions bones would evenly shatter across their entire body and they would be sent flying, assuming their heads didn't explode from the Psionic overflow.

 

 

 

Subconscious Infiltration (Passive, Non-Combative, Uncombinable): “The Subconscious is the mind's first and only defense against outside influence. But any defense, no matter how stalwart, can be worn down over time if one is patient.”

In many cases where a Psion needs consent to aid a patient but said patient is unable to give it one must coerce the subjects subconscious to where it is more conducive to the task. Subconscious Infiltration is considered the most intrusive ability in a Psions arsenal. It allows the Psion to gently influence the subjects subconscious by chipping away at the defensive layer of their Emotional Aura. This is a last resort ability due to it being a very slippery slope for a Psion. They will undoubtedly be tempted to use it to influence others. Something that must be routed out early on in the Psions training. 

 

Mechanic’s:

The process of this spell is fairly straightforward and very similar to the mental tap from the spell Empathy. It deals in using the Psion dissolved ID to chip away at the defensive part of the target’s subconscious. This can take hours at times before the Psion can make stable contact with the person to ask for consent to carry out the required task. This is only used in quite extreme cases of madness and psychosis that the patient is completely incoherent.

 

The more dark and devious part of this ability is using it on normal people to influence their subconscious and inject unconscious thoughts and desires that are not their own. This action can take literal decades and for some even a century to work. During this time the Psion will stay rather close to their target, attempting to keep them within their passive Aura so as to not arouse suspicion. This takes immense skill and precision and greed and impatience will lead to the Psion slipping up. This can take various forms though the most obvious is a change in the target's behavior being picked up by others. This Infiltration is incredibly subtle if done right however and can lead to some truly disastrous consequences depending on who it is used on. The only truly accurate way to find evidence of the tampering is through a Soul Joining though this will not reveal precisely who did it, just that their mind had been tampered with. 

 

Using this ability for longer than 3 years will result in parts of their victims emotional residue on themselves, this will act similarly to the Murder stain and will reduce their emote chains to [3] emotes. The only other option for the Psion now is to either cease their attempts or continue them and become a Fallen.

 

  

 

Tier Progression:

  • Enlightened Psions: Enlightened find this ability fairly hard to use due to still having their own unconscious to deal with. They can make use of the helpful aspects of this ability though, using it with immense difficulty on patients whose minds are too far gone to repair with Mental Healing.

  • Transcended Psions: Having a fully dissolved ID and a complete lack of an unconscious; Transcended are able to begin peeling away at the defenses of most targets' unconscious mind. They are the only tier capable of using this ability on unwilling individuals to mold their minds like clay.

Psionic Projection (Active, Non-Combative, Combinable): “Detachment from worldly needs and needs of the flesh are basic teachings for any young Psion. Detachment from the flesh itself is the sign of a master.”

Through patience, meditation, and training, a Psion gains a better understanding of the universe, but more importantly, themselves. Psionic Projection is the act of separating one's conscious mind from their Physical bodies. The resulting projection is able to move completely freely so long as they remain within the Willful Aura of the Psion. This has various uses as the projection is non-corporeal, though it leaves the Psion utterly defenseless.

In some ways this ability is compared to Phoenix Reincarnation in that it allows the consciousness of the Psion to detach from their material form. It requires the ability Meditation as a prerequisite in order to be cast. Once the Psion has completed the emotes for Meditation they may begin separating from their physical body. This takes an additional [2] emotes for a total of [8] emotes. At this stage the Projection will leave the physical body and is free. The Projection itself is able to levitate and to a very limited extent, fly around within the Willful Aura emitted by their physical body. The Projection is entirely non-corporeal and cannot be harmed through conventional means. They are fully capable of phasing through solid objects so long as they are within the bounds of their Aura. People can see the Projection as a transparent copy of the Psion themselves.

The formation of a Psionic Avatar shares many of the same inner workings as Psionic constructs. An Avatar however is not an object, it is a fully sapient entity that a Transcended commands. They can move and interact with the physical world and are largely independent from the Psion though they are fragile and limited to the confines of the Aura.

To create a Psionic Avatar requires [3] emotes and must be done outside of combat. The Avatar can be made to look like anyone though it will always share the same height and weight as the Psion who casted it. Just like Psionic Constructs people will instinctively know that the Avatar is not real. The Avatar can be created wearing any kind of clothes, hairstyles etc. Interestingly the Avatar is not robotic, it can and will have its own personality. They are perfectly capable of interacting with others and are fully aware of what they are. They cannot fight but are able to interact with normal matter without much issue. Simulating another person is rather difficult, creating a perfect image of oneself is simple however. In order to create a 1 to 1 copy of a person the Psion will need to have done a Soul Joining with that individual.

  1. While they can look and talk like the real thing an Avatar can never fool another being into believing they are the person they are trying to mimic.

  2. Damage in this context is anything resembling a solid hit, even a nick or scratch will destroy the Avatar.

Psionic Beam (Active, Offensive, Uncombinable): “There are times when negotiations fall through. Luckily a blast of essence draining sand paper is a good plan B.”

A higher form of Psionic Blast, this spell is very powerful and very taxing on the user. It is a consistent beam of Psionic energy that is fired from the eyes of the Transcended.

This spell is considered the most powerful a Psion can muster. It takes [3] emotes to activate and [1] emote to deactivate. The beam itself carries the force of an average human charging into the target intending to tackle them. More hardy races like orcs can push through this with some difficulty but otherwise are strong enough to pin an average descendant to a wall. This beam can very quickly drain the target if it hits center mass, draining 25% of the target's stamina per emote it maintains contact. A glancing/continuous blow to extremities will drain only 15%. The beam feels like being blasted with high speed sand particles though it doesn’t actually harm the physical body. 

 

While it is difficult to move against the flow of the beam it is fairly easy to step outside of it assuming it isn’t pinning a person to a wall. The Psion casting this will also have their vision severely hampered both during casting and for [3] emotes following its deactivation. It is the equivalent of trying to see while there is a very bright light in one's eyes. Maintaining this beam for longer than [4] emotes will cause temporary blindness lasting 1 year IG. The speed of the beam's emittance is slightly slower than the speed of the Psionic Blast.

 

 

Redlines:

  1. While this ability is painful, it is not painful enough to knock a mage out of casting.

 

Mind Palace: (Passive, Non-Combative, Combinable): “The mind is a vast and fantastical entity, perfect for hosting parties!”

A Mind Palace is a metaphysical location that represents the interior mind of the Psion. This ability is an amalgam of multiple different abilities and allows other entities to enter the mind of the Psion.

To cast a Mind palace the ability Meditation is required as a prerequisite and thus requires the associated emotes to enter meditation. Once meditation has been entered a door will begin appearing over the course of [3] emotes. The door can look like anything the Psion wants and can vary wildly from person to person. 

 

Once past the door the visitors will enter into the Psions Mind Palace. A physical representation of the Psions mind. Architecture, coloration, size, and shape are all governed by the ego of the person. At this point a copy of the Psion will be already waiting inside. Normal laws of physics do not apply within the Mind Palace and while everything may look and feel real there, all of it is harmless and purely metaphysical. The Psion has an uncanny control over the Palace and while they may look like the Psion they are actually the embodiment of the Psions Ego. This ability has no specific use and is instead meant as a meeting place and a location to host celebrations and parties.

  1. Should the Psion die for any reason the visitors inside the Psions mind will be violently ejected instantly.

  2. Items and people cannot be stored within, upon deactivation the items will be ejected similarly to redline 1. 

  3. While there is no true upper limit to the Mind Palace it may become strenuous if more than 10 enter.

  4. While it is possible to learn things about the Psion by venturing further in; the Psion will be fully cognizant of the location of every person and can very easily lock off sections at will.

Mind Guild (Active, Non-Combative, Combinable): “There is believed to be a realm of pure thought that is the conjoined culmination of all sentient consciousness. What we are doing here is creating a far more simple yet powerful version of that.” 

This ability is the Psionic version of mage circles yet is distinctly unique in many respects. It is used for tasks far too great or complex for a single Psion.

This ability is not for the meek. It is a very powerful binding shared between multiple Psions. By using the Mind Link ability Psions can come together and form a singular entity that is a combination of the minds of all those involved. This entity is very powerful and extremely intelligent. This opens the door to many varying applications than one can imagine.

 

It begins by having each participant enter meditation one at a time in a circle. This requires a minimum of 3 Psions and can include a max of 9. One Psion will act as the “lead” during this and will sit in a central point relative to the others. Once all the Psions have entered meditation the Lead will form a Mind link with each Psion, one at a time and delegate part of the new consciousness to them. In the case of there being 3 Psions; the Lead will act as the Ego for the new entity, another will take the role as the Superego and one unlucky one will take the role of the ID. In the case of 6, two will be delegated to the Ego, two to the Superego, and two for the ID.

 

This effectively creates an entirely new being that is capable of incredible feats. Due to the ID consisting of an entire person/people, it can have a very profound effect on the physical world. Whether this involves using telekinesis to build entire structures, focusing the premonition ability to gain info on a subject, or create a powerful Avatar to defend their location. This has risks and drawbacks however.

 

The person/people delegated to being the ID are subjected to having their consciousness dissolved and reformed repeatedly. This is understandably unnerving and leads to the risk of a fight for dominance occurring. Whatever action is done with the Mind Guild must be accompanied by a roll of 1/20 to determine if a fight for dominance will occur. Rolls below a 5 are considered a failure. Certain circumstances can change the odds however. Delegating a Lesser Psion as the ID for example will increase the roll to 1/23. Following the end of the Guild the individual/s delegated to the ID will find themselves unable to use any of their abilities, Psionic or otherwise, for a time period of 1 year IG. Should the roll be 5 or less all participants will enter severe Psionic Overflow and the Lead will die (Non-PK)

Awakening: Awakening is a very exciting time for the newly made Psion. They find that their world is far bigger and more detailed than they could have ever imagined. They will often head out on adventures to explore the depths of their gifts and seek out new forms of mental stimulation. While remaining somewhat timid and tentative and not utterly outgoing and social like the Enlightened and Transcended the new Psion will find themselves speaking to random strangers and smiling much more frequently. In terms of their abilities, the Awakened are very similar to Lessers in many ways, excluding the sheer degree of control the Lessers have over the abilities they share with the Awakened. They lack precision when it comes to their casting and will often require aid from their mentor in cases they do not fully understand. This tier typically lasts 16 years though certain children of Psions take only 12.

 

Enlightenment: Enlightenment is quite an experience to undergo. The Awakening granted the Psion sight beyond sight, but Enlightenment grants understanding to that sight. These Psions are infectiously positive and optimistic, it is not uncommon to see them with a resting expression of a smile. Enlightened tend to gravitate towards creativity as an outlet for their newfound understanding of things. This can include art, poetry, song, and dance etc. They are however still quite impulsive, taking unnecessary risks and indulging themselves with a higher form of a hedonistic lifestyle. This is a very nuanced form of decadence that is only really accessible to Psions. In terms of their ability, they have become very graceful with their casting though they lack the depth and fluidity of the Transcended. They are easily considered childish due to their demeanor and almost naive optimism. This tier is much faster to progress through than Awakening, taking only 8 years to progress to Transcendence if that is the Psions wish.

 

Transcendence: There are many fairy tales of heroes being taught by wise old sages to help them achieve their destiny, many compare the Transcended to this concept. They are the final form of Psionics, their minds and view-point of the world having risen so high that they are no longer concerned with pursuing their own destiny for they have not only achieved it, they have transcended beyond it. They very rarely meddle in the affairs of Physicals, preferring instead to guide a select few so that they may make an indirect difference. When they do meddle it is usually because it has a greater importance in the grand scheme of things that others cannot see. Their mannerisms range widely but each holds a unique and nuanced effect on those around them. As for their abilities; they are able to cast with a fluidity and grace that is difficult to describe without being shown. They have a profound understanding of the metaphysical and physical world and use this sight to create wonders to satiate appetites both subtle and gross.

 

  

 

Interactions with other Magic:

Voidal Magic:

Inherently, Voidal energy represents Power and Chaos, this is a coarse and broad state but is relevant regardless. Conversely, Psionic energy represents Order and Understanding. They are polar opposites in many respects for these reasons. Normally they do not interact due to voidal energy mainly being caught up in spells and whatnot. When they are both pure however they collide and destroy one another, producing a considerable explosion as they’re combined energy is converted to heat. For this reason voidal mages or anything possessing a connection to the void in any way cannot become Psions.

 

 

 

General Redlines:

  1. Lesser Psionics is a Feat, Higher Psionics is a three slot magic, one slot for each tier of ascension.

  2. Psions are not inherently more intelligent than non-Psions nor can they become smarter than the max for their race.

  3. No matter how advanced a Psion is; the act of generating an Active Aura takes some degree of concentration that can be broken given enough effort. This of course corresponds to the skill of the Psion in question.

  4. A Psion that generates an equal to greater amount of Psionic energy to their own life essence will be plagued by Psionic Overflow.

  5. Psionics is not compatible with Voidal, Seer, Shade, Siliti, or Animii.

  6. A Psion with a TA may train a maximum of [4] students at a time.

  7. It takes a grand total of 32 weeks irl to go from Awakening to Transcendence.

  8. Psions are just as susceptible to Illusions and Mental magic as any other descendent. At best the most powerful Psions will feel odd but not to the point that they feel the need to act on it.

  9. Psions have the same armor restraints as voidal mages though they have slightly more leniency, allowing them to wear selective plating over either their torso or extremities but not both.

  10. Psionic Blast, weapons and beam, while unable to actually damage an entity can affect quite a number of entities with its signature energy draining capabilities. (When using this in an event please consult the ET/St in charge beforehand to come to a consensus about how these abilities would effect a specific event entity.)

 

Super duper very ultra important redline:

The abilities Empathy, Telepathy, and Psychometry when used to get a better understanding of a person can only be used to better grasp the overall “vibe” that the person playing the character is trying to give off. These are NOT intended to be used to understand any ulterior motives the character has. This is especially applies to when someone views another's soul with Psychometry, it only shows precisely what the person playing that character wants to show, nothing more.

About 5 months ago I decided to take a break from LOTC to allow myself to become more detached from the server before I wrote this lore. As it turns out the concept of Psionics is a deep deep rabbit hole to fall into. Multiple different cultures spanning literally a thousand years of history, pop culture, Sci-fi, Fantasy, DND. All these things allowed me to create this 22k word behemoth. More than anything, I desired to break away from the common magic mold as much as I could when I wrote this. I didn’t by any means want a “pew pew” combat magic. As a matter of fact I worked to ensure that other magics were inherently superior in terms of raw power as compared to Psionics. This isn’t a super exclusive, op, magic that the general character community isn’t allowed to know about. It is a Social magic, it is designed by its very nature to be used to add a load of stuff to rp interactions and create interesting characters. But more than that, it is meant to help spread positivity.

 

If anything, that is most important to me for this lore. To create a magic that inspires people, that helps them to achieve something more profound and intricate than just dominating people with fireballs. It’s about exploring our own identities, who we are and how we work. A deeper, more in depth look at ourselves through a medium that does not restrict us with convoluted systems of moral bureaucracy. That’s how I’d like to start Almaris, with positivity and a chance for our community to heal from the crap during Arcas, the server issues, the lore games, etc. Even if this lore is denied (which I expect it to be a few times as I work out the kinks) I will maintain that small ounce of faith left that truly believes in the world we have created together. 

 

You are stronger than you know, not mentally, not physically, but in spirit and heart. That is the purpose of this lore, to show that through persistence, determination, and altruism, true greatness can shine through, even for the briefest of moments. We are more than our faults, and no one is unworthy of redemption. I don’t lay claim to being a good writer, I have my faults. I tend to repeat certain phrases in my writing and I have a bad habit of not using my full vocabulary. But I truly believe this lore will better the server, both in terms of fun, as well as hope for a better tomorrow. I plan to be quite ambitious with this project, I would like it to grow organically, different people other than me have plenty of room to expand this lore into a greater force like Chi has been doing. If it is accepted I would like to release it in the form of a discovery and spread IC through a public statement about it. I have left a great deal of ambiguity in this lore to allow it to grow organically with player experimentation and interactions. I want other people to add their own spells, even perhaps feats to go with Psionics! It’s all up to the community to do with this lore as they please.
