THE IRONY OF PEARLS

There was once a man who had never cried a single tear in his life. He was a happy man, but he did not cry tears of joy. Sometimes he was sad, and yet he never cried tears of melancholy. He had a wife, two kids - all of which were loving. But he was a poor man. He had little - little clothes, little money, little house. And, although he was happy, he was not content.

One day, in his little house, a witch approached the man. She enticed him with her beauty, her fair and soft voice; she said “Wise men live long, and greedy men stay rich - but you, I enchant you, that every tear you cry will grant you more of each. You will live longer, be wiser, and be rich beyond all belief. All you must do is cry.”

The man slept that night and woke up a different man. At first the thought of his children dying granted him few tears; each turning into a pearl, shimmering and delightful. But soon this no longer worked, the tears dried. His few pearls, his gained wisdom would not last and still he was not content.

The man’s eyes were dry like roots, his greediness (as the witch had enchanted him) compelled him to darkness - that night he wept like a child on the floor, each tear turning into a shining pearl - falling from his eyes on to the cold marble, splattered red with blood. His wife, his children: throat slits. Finally, this man was as rich as one could dream to be.

Yet, where did the wisdom the witch promised go? The man, as he sat there weeping into his mount of pearls realised, a sudden and bitter revelation…

Tears of sadness. Tears of joy. His wisdom could not separate the two; if only he had bought an onion with the first pearl he cried, then he would not be sitting there, knife in murderous hand immortal among men.
