THE FIRST HOMILY OF PROVIDENTIA
By Sanctitas Pontifex Maximus

OWYN III

AS TRANSCRIBED BY MANFRIED ARCHIEPISCOPUS PROVIDENTIA
IN THE CAPITAL CITY OF PROVIDENCE, HOLY ORENIAN EMPIRE

THE TRANSCRIPT EDITION

Dear Imperial Majesty Emperor Joseph of Novellen;
The most esteemed houses of the Holy Orenian Empire;
& my beloved Orenian colleagues from Providentia, Albarosa, Reinmar & Rochefort.

Humanity has marched into foreign territory -- embracing ways, philosophies and prosperity unseen before. Breaking the robust and repetitive cycles of history, against all odds, humanity chose a different path. From a primitive Lord-Protectorate we went to a young democracy at war, to a now bustling center of statecraft in the prime of its golden age.

St. Adrian would be proud at the progress achieved by the Novellen dynasty, although they did not cultivate this apex of humanity alone. By their side stood great architects of statecraft such as Simon Basrid, Sir Frederick Armas & General DeNurem: who each planted the necessary seeds from which these diligent institutions began to grow. Then came a generation born into this changing zeitgeist: from Jonah Stahl Elendil to Franz de Sarkozy, George Galbraith to Ciprian de la Baltas, who nurtured these saplings into bountiful trees of egalitarian democracy and humane governance.

They are but examples of the hundreds of Orenians who, through diligence and commitment alone, architected an Empire with unparalleled welfare and success. Any man can, despite his peerage and connections, partake in a discourse where he shall be listened to. Any culture can ascend into prominence amongst the tapestry of man, with discrimination on the basis of mankind’s differences now ancient history. The Rhenyari can stand as proud peers and bureaucrats, in a society that speaks many languages.

GOD creates a balance in his world however, as paradise among mortals would make pursuing the Seven Skies an unnecessary pastime. The extravagant wealth in governance and Minas achieved in Oren: ride together with an elaborate challenge to morality and piety. Why would man look to GOD for purpose and success, if he is seemingly surrounded by it? GOD does not blame a man for drawing this conclusion, but only wishes to make him see the light.

The pillars upon which great Sovereigns such as Emperor Peter III & Empress Anne the August built this empire are made and maintained by Canonist hands and stones. Throughout the greatest challenges we faced as a people, it was our faith that could transcend the cultural and political differences between ourselves. And it shall be the faith today that can uniquely rise to the occasion as a peacekeeper between Canonist peoples.

There is purpose to the Holy Mother Church beyond the rituals it is most known for. Whenever our authority is low, moral anarchy conquers the streets. Whenever a Bishop falters, his congregation withers. Such is an enormous mandate that demands incredible diligence and care from our clergy, who just as its congregations can falter to sin and errors. But to throw rocks at the redeemable souls who succumb to error, is to be an unforgiving Canonist: a paradoxical state of being.

Instead one must aim its passions to change a society that, tragically, seeks to replace GOD with the material and the temporary. It is easy to critique a clergyman for not combatting this with the methods or attitude you might prefer, but it takes greater courage and reflection to discover what your role is in a zeitgeist going further from GOD. Model yourself after pious icons like Joseph II & Simon Basrid, and use the instruments GOD has given you to succeed in a more profound & fulfilling way.

If you are a proprietor of a settlement, follow the wisdom of Municipalities such as Esbec & Redenford in pursuing the creation of a diocese: which shall bless them with clerical visitors, festivities, resources & nurturing in perpetuity. The Holy Mother Church cares deeply for the prosperity of all Canonist settlements, and rewards all that see to the creation of a house of GOD amidst their bustling streets.

If you are the elder of a family, look no further than burghers like Galbraith or royals such as the Novellens for exemplar figures of piety & diligence. No matter the wealth or stature, GOD and His Institution embraces you fully. Anyone is worth the time of His Holiness and his clergy, any man is esteemed enough to join the house of GOD. There is no transaction in the love between the Faith and its faithful.

And if you are a Canonist, understand that GOD has a plan for you, even if he seems farther away in a society filled with temptation and distraction. Popular or outcast, eloquent or mute, wealthy or poor: GOD and His Church perceive you as a valued Canonist with a justification to exist, with a right to pursue a better life and a fulfilling purpose. Let not the coin, but GOD, buy you a better life.

Te Deum.

"Yeah Providence is cool and all, but have you seen Osanora?" says Ailred.

The Cardinal Amadeus, having only barely left his state of bedridden illness and with a thick bacon bap squeezed beneath his amusingly thin fingers, had the homily read aloud to him.

As he drifted to sleep ten seconds later, he dreamt of a life that could have been. The ancient statesman was young once again, and bills flowed like water from magnificent fountains. The people applauded him as he lifted the Tapestry of Man up high between both hands. Decades later, the High Pontiff himself congratulated Amadeus on a job well done. He swam amongst a pile of votes, and greeted Joseph II atop a unicorn.

In the real world the manservant grimaced at the sleeping Cardinal.

"A mop, please!" He called out into the hallway as a puddle formed on the floor.

Joseph Leopold sat there, reading over the missive. His eyes would glance down towards his tabletop, moving to pen a response to the people of Providence.

"While the Pontiff's words are encouraging we cannot ignore that he is blind to the situation at hand. This man puts moralities brought up by years of strife at jeopardy. Imploring that these men we consider heroes would think otherwise of our actions. We were raised by these heroes, we know them too well for anyone else to use them against us and is another insult on top of the many. Your own subordinates act on their own accord by publicly publishing letters clearly meant to harm the image of the Empire while in the midst of your own sins coming to light. The cracks of your administration are starting to show, turning those attempting to cooperate away, while the people of the Empire consolidated under a common cause. I want to state clearly, that the people of Providence have not strayed from the path of righteousness. They've in fact brought up a moral code with them, and you're drowning in your own ego, unable to accept your own faults, that you turn your back on these people and publish such a tone deaf statement. Furthering the divide between faithful and the church. This statement only proves my suspicions that the road we're traveling will be a dark one and the people of the Empire will set a flame ablaze as they have done in the past. So we may prosper."
