“The key for escaping boyhood and becoming a man is the fruits of experience”

Penned by the hand of

His Royal Highness Prinzen Andrik Nikolas, Herzen van Galahar

The Great Expedition

In that way a pious man goes on a pilgrimage to the holy sanctities and shrines of the world to attain a spiritual journey that makes them a better man, so too does the noble youth of Hanseti-Ruska culminate their education in the Great Expedition which serves as a coming of age development for youths (Hauchmetvar, as it is known in Haeseni spheres). Simply put, the expedition is when a Junker, or young lord, over a number of years travels through the different cities upon the continent, taking in the sights and learning their history to have a greater appreciation of the larger world.  These tours typically last a Saint’s Week, or a year but durations may very well vary depending on the individual lordling’s dedication.

The Expedition’s Aim

It is no secret that all secrets to the art of statesmanship and cultural development is found in one nation. All nations do some things better, or worse, than others. It is therefore pertinent to learn the mysteries of other nations on an expedition, so that the future of the kingdom is always innovative rather than backwards.

There is no better way for an aristocrat of good means to see the world than to experience it for himself. On that journey he will learn about the foreign cultures that co-exist on our continent, invest in the creation of marvellous collections of oddities and literature, and may even find a striking match with good Canonist virtue.

This tour is of essential importance in the education of peers who may one day hope to govern.

For one learns to know many figures and cultures they may have otherwise been unexposed to on a tour, and in doing so these young sprites of youth will certainly learn a thing or two to benefit their own motherland in turn.

Beyond learning from these cultures there are artifacts, relics and tomes for young men to collect so they have an interesting mantelpiece to gawk at. If a man wishes to be someone of note at court, it is most important to retrieve the terra’s riches so as to display both wealth, as well as to be a man of genuine interest to talk to! How can any woman expect for you to drone on about your legislative bills. How droll! The prized discoveries of former junkers are thought to be displayed upon the tapestries of familial homesteads, utilized as a symbol of familial pride.

It is certainly beyond reproach that the women of Hanseti-Ruska are northern beauties. From the most delicate flowers to the sturdiest tree, there is certainly a way to appreciate and marry a woman of good repute in our kingdom. Yet, a woman of station is not always readily available, previously arranged by the greying grandees of the realm. Should a young Junker find himself in need of a wife or a brief dalliance of companionship before being wed, look abroad, young man.

How Does One Set out on a tour?

A route tour is simple, though you must only have some idea of where you are travelling and what for, additionally there must be more than at least three destinations to be considered truly ‘worldly.’ A traveller might consider traveling to hubs where different cultures thrive ( for example, the city state of Yong Ping, the realm of Elvenesse, and the Rexdom of Krugmar).

For those of means and in search of a greater depth rather than being a simple tourist, it is advised to have a wiser man of the world guide you upon your journey. The man should know several contacts, languages and histories of the lands in which you seek so as for a young man to gain a rounder experience and absorb the expertise of the senior.

What will one gain from setting out on a tour?

To become a more worldly individual, it is imperative to experience the vast continent’s wonders and return to our motherland, fair Hanseti-Ruska, renewed and fulfilled. From the fruits of a young junker’s labor will emerge various prospects, among them the opportunity to present his findings to the King and Court. In addition to this recognition from the Royal Crown itself, he will find himself more confident in his manhood, leadership abilities, and all future endeavors.

It is our belief most certainly that, in reality, books are not the only means of which you learn, and by far not even the most effective. Education is achieved most thoroughly exterior stimuli and in doing rather than reading. After all, when a man has stayed in his room long enough he has used it up, and so requires a change of scenario before life becomes static and droll.

After a Tour

Once a tour has concluded, what is left for a person to do but hope to do more? Whilst a man shall certainly thereafter aim to enter  worldly affairs within the kingdom, and see to it that affairs are in order, it is by no means the end of the journey. From their journey they should have expected to keep in contact with their family and friends through letters and murmur their own thoughts through a diary. After all is said and done, they should be expected to publish  and gain reputation as a personage of writing in writing journals, travelogues or even their individual letters.

A person has furthermore gained new friends that one should remain in contact with, and even offer lodgings to should you have encouraged them to similarly pick up the torch of grand touring, for travel is certainly contagious.

And finally, one should continue to practice their new talents learnt. Whether that be artistry, alchemy or some other hobby. It is of paramount importance to be a man of substance, and so a man must continue his hobbies and develop them so as to do something worthwhile beyond assisting in the state.

Signed,

His Royal Highness, Prince Andrik Nikolas Barbanov, Duke of Galahar
