Treshure 5579 Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2021 What is Tutorial Island? Tutorial Island is the first area that new players enter once they are whitelisted on Lord of the Craft. These islands are an opportunity to learn the core fundamentals of the server before new players enter Almaris. They also tie into the upcoming Player Retention Plugin, offering a intuitive experience from start to finish. The Islands run through the following aspects of the server, • Chat & Emotes • Soulstone Pillars • Vortex Gathering • Shops, Auctioneers, & Banking • PvP & LWC Locks • Genesis Integration Tutorial Island is split into different “demo” islands, where each island allows the players to interact with a core aspect of the server. Tutorial Island is designed to be modular, so that we can add or remove core aspects of our server as time progresses. All of the text on Tutorial Island either appears in front of the new player or in their chat box. All of the instructions are intended to advise the new player on how to interact with the plugin rather than explaining through exposition. New players can learn some of the core commands of LotC, such as summoning a soulstone. New players can also get their hands dirty by practicing resource gathering on the island. Here we find a new player interacting with Tutorial Island in the wild. The new player will face a portal at the end of their walk through Tutorial Island. Currently it will warp the player to the Nation Hubs, but when the Genesis Plugin is released, it will automatically integrate to then show them the most popular current settlements & begin the guided quest from there. Why the Change? One of the new player experiences that we wanted to address in light of the Player Retention Report was the state of Tutorial Island. The concept of Tutorial Island was introduced in Athera and then reworked over the years. It began simple. It was a chain of islands with a clean, straight shot to the end. If a new player wanted to sprint jump towards the end, they could. But it still had most of everything they needed to know. This began to change over the years. The islands were made to be very aesthetically detailed and to contain much more information. This philosophy has unfortunately outlasted its utility. Our previous Tutorial Island was based on an NPC system - we had many NPCs with paragraphs of dialogue and instruction each. The Island was also free to explore - it was just as easy for a new player to wander off into the Island’s jungle as it was to stay on the path and slug through pages of text. We didn't think this was very straightforward for new players. In the everlasting quest to make a more effortless experience, we decided to revamp Tutorial Island. Want to see it for yourself? Head right after leaving the main Cloud Temple grounds. You’ll come across a balloon with a warp to the Tutorial Island. You can exit through the Hubs warp at the end of the island. Credits This project could not have been done without help of the fabulous@WestCarolina. She built & furnished every single island and helped design the demo experiences around them. Additional cudos to @BathRugMan, @6xdestroyer, @Malaise, and @Minth_11 for extra building help around the project. @Chronics is my one and only Safety™ tester. Superb salutations to @nickrocky213 and @Llir for integrating the Vortex demos, porting over the Tutorial Island world, and making sure everything doesn't fall apart. That's all for now, folks! I'll see you in the next one.

Sorcerio 4588 Share Posted May 15, 2021 Maybe this is just me, but honestly, I think it'd be most prudent to allow players to do tutorial island while they're waiting for their application to be accepted. I know that when I was new, I wanted to head into things right away; so figuring everything out beforehand would do a lot to help that. Once they've completed the tutorial, they can vibe as a WS or just go do it again, no harm no foul. Otherwise, I think this is pretty solid!

Unwillingly 10837 Share Posted May 15, 2021 very cool, nice to see this up and running again I've been heavily noob wrangling elves for about 5 months now, and I feel like something that's imperative to the new player experience™ is making sure new players understand more than just basic commands or lore. New players should be able to understand from the start that they make their own story, and their experience is what they make it to be (and a few sentences on a heavily outdated forum doesnt really do the job). Hot take, the creative possibilities on this server are pretty dang impressive, so I think it's really important that we embrace this idea for our noobs. On a smaller note, I think something that would help is making sure they're properly informed of the small ins-and-outs of the server that the average veteran player already knows. Things like, not every city will be active at all times, roleplay wont always come to them, and most nations are organized in their own discord server especially, which I feel like definitely increases the chances of new players sticking around, as it gives them that OOC resource to ask questions and get some RP. unfortunately a lot of this is out of the community team's hands and it comes down to veteran players pulling their weight in noob wrangling, unless the CT considers any of this for upcoming projects or w/e

I'll add it to the docket. 18 minutes ago, Unwillingly said: That's a great idea. One of the things I like about this model of islands is how modular they are. We can totally add in an island that explains nations, the flow of roleplay, etc. We can even incorporate map art that shows city overviews, for instance. Also on the docket.

I wondered how to contact people to get a home, without realising there was a Skype chat for just Cerulin. Eventually I realised when I became a Druid and was invited to that Skype chat but until then it was a mystery. Linking invites to nations with public discords could help with this. Question- Do new players spawn on the new tutorial island? Or will they spawn at CT? I feel like they should spawn on the island to ensure they don't miss it. Not like any veteran player remaking a persona will mind running to the end.

Yup! new players automatically spawn at the island.
