There’s a game I like to play. 
 

It’s called “What if this happened to a newbie?”

 

And when I play this game, here’s what I do. I look at a situation that occurred on the server or here on LordOfTheCraft.net - and I imagine it from the perspective of a brand new player who just got accepted. This person has no experience with LOTC and no idea of the server culture. They are a wide-eyed innocent. A blank slate. A tabula rasa, so to speak. 
 

Now, imagine this newbie ends up in Oren. They really like Oren! Maybe they’re a fan of Steampunk and they dig the Victorian aesthetic. Maybe they’re big into Brian McClellan’s Powder Mage trilogy. Maybe they’re a colonial history buff. Maybe they just think the extensive IC history is cool. 
 

This is a thought experiment, so imagine it. Set aside your personal feelings about Oren. 
 

This newbie innocently wonders - “Why doesn’t Oren have guns?” Because guns are a staple of Steampunk RP. Fantasy settings like World of Warcraft and Warhammer have guns. Dungeons & Dragons has a whole Artificer class based around magic guns. And Minecraft already has a crossbow that you, the newbie, imagine could be roleplayed as a musket! What a cool idea! You wonder why no one has thought of this yet.

 

So you, an enthusiastic newb, write up what you feel is good and fair lore. You post it, excited to see the reaction, and...

 

160 replies in under two hours. Most of them are hateful, unconstructive, belittling, excessively rude, and - at worst - verbally abusive. The thread is locked in less than eight hours. You set off a land mine without knowing it. 
 

How do you feel?

 

Here’s how I would feel. I would feel humiliated and devastated. I would immediately quit the server and never look back. I would never forget how the entire server dragged me across hot coals because I had the audacity to write about my idea and post it to the forums. Thank goodness Hanrahan is an oldie with a skin as thick as leather because what happened yesterday might be traumatizing to anyone else. 

 

LOTC has a reputation among the MCRP community. And that reputation is not a good one. This community’s reputation is one of toxicity, cruelty, and intolerance because of incidents like this. 
 

I like LOTC. I came back because of fond memories and old friendships. And I will tell you that it’s a damn sight better than some servers. But, guys, this behavior is not good.

 

it’s not kind. 
 

it’s not accepting.

 

it’s not supportive.

 

you can disagree with something and still show a ******* ounce of human decency and courtesy and kindness to the person on the other side of the screen.

 

this isn’t a debate about guns because I do not care whether or not we get guns in mineman. There are other fantasy RP servers that have muskets in their lore (shocking, I know!) and I can go play there if I’m desperate for gun RP. 
 

This is about how we are treating one another and how we show respect for other peoples’ ideas and contributions. If someone is brave enough to put themselves out there and offer their idea up for criticism, you should show them enough kindness to critique thoughtfully and supportively even if you don’t like the idea.

Ironic seeing how Hanrahan can be extremely toxic and rude to others. Both sides needed to chill on that thread, and not everything is an attack against Oren or its players. The people that make it an attack, should also stop.

 

That being said, not everyone in Oren wants guns either. If someone does not want to have that type of roleplay they can disagree with it.

this is just mineman and both people are wrong for being toxic. Han and his buds were not making it better by being salty and neither was the other side. That’s my take on the situation as well. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I feel this is ironic. Toxic man does toxic response and in return gets responded with toxic comments. Toxicity breeds toxicity. Hold thought in what you say and understand not everything is about a certain player or a certain playerbase.

 

The saying of grow up comes to mind and it's just a game. If someone dislikes something they should always express there distaste. If you view them disagreeing and them disliking, being negative over what was posted out there. That is on you and everyone who has taken an opinion to heart. If Han just accepted not everyone will have good words towards his post and just didn't respond neither did his friends to the negativity surrounded the question of guns which plagued LoTC for as long as it's been around. No problems would of raised and one side would of been seen as just a group of negative people disagreeing with a lore post.

 

End of day. Welcome to LoTC a game where people take their minecraft experience very seriously, it's kind of expected and I don't know why a post is needed for this topic personally. It happens, suck it up. Say your sorry and move on. But it is good drama and funny.

I want to say this as a player observing and not formally as the administration. But I believe that this treatment would not be extended to a newer player, those that have no clue of the systems or the pre-established precedents surrounding and such.

 

I disagree with the outburst shown on that post, but I understand why people have done this. It's almost a six-month argument with @Hanrahan at the spearhead. It's a repeated thing where people have demonstrated their dislike, and the people's concerns are bashed with toxicity as the same goes with those supporting it. It's a mismatch horrid situation, but I think overall I hope it puts to rest this entire debacle for at least as long as I'm Story Admin. 

 

It is very much a slap in the face to the playerbase that has witnessed this and believe their own roleplay is being squashed by a playerbase that they believe does not interact with the server beyond itself. I understand completely the heated argument, but it charges from the communities that represent it and their appeared intent. I do not wish or endorse that if this was a new person, but I also believe the server would definitely not react in such a way if it was a bystander who made a post that didn't follow formats and such.

Second post in 4 years to second what Urara has stated... And really, it's only backed up by the responses following on this thread which either;

 

a) dismiss the issue entirely because this is 'mineman'

or

b) saying it's fine because 'they started it'

Sorry but when I see horrible musket lore submissions I’m going to critique them.

 

Hanharan’s lore didn’t even include a maximum range.

Here's why this is untrue. Because we have evidence otherwise. Here's someone fairly new (less than a year old account) who posted something that blatantly broke techlock in the same way that muskets do. He was told no, there was a little memery, but overall, people were polite, explained the issues, and wished him luck

Imagine someone who LOVES warhammer dwarves with their grudges, axes, gyrocopters - the general steampunk style.

Do the dwarves run around demanding dwarven gyrocopters just to cry the moment they don't get them, over and over again? No.

Because it's completely breaking the lore and coming up with such an idea is ridiculous, especially bring it up over and over again!

 

I'm not saying he served the hate, no one does. 

But it was called for. You cannot spit on what people love and expect to be welcomed on a red carpet.
