I. Foreword

Dear Reader,

Do note that this publication is a free and summarized representation of analyses and consultation provided to paying businesses, governments, and other organizations. This annual issue can not present advice specific to your situation, but we at the Economic Forum hope that our charitable work may help you lay a foundation of economic wisdom. As always, please feel free to write to either of our regional offices in Providence or Sooticka, or to our global headquarters in Andowaller. Reader, we wish you the very best in all things, and to not become disheartened in the face of misfortune.

With great care,

Soren Q. Z. Haas-Lotherington, President of the Economic Forum

II. The Scope of this Guide

The information presented herein pertains to the northeastern region of Almaris, which is defined by the Economic Forum as being composed of the Orenian capital of Providence and its hinterlands bound by the waters, and the Athenland country owned by the king of Haynes.

III. Evaluating the Northeast

This region, of course, is dominated by the City of Providence at the mouth of Oren’s largest river. The lush hills north of the River Augusta contain roughly a fifth of Almaris’ total population. Mining, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishing compose the bulk of the northeast’s primary economy. Consumption and export of the crucial goods derived have created considerably healthy and wealthy inhabitants as a whole.

Onward are more potent analyses for the areas of Providence and Athenland featuring current trends and predictions specific to each.

Athenland

Athenland is the eastern half of the Kingdom of Haynes’ breadth, as well as the upper portion of Almaris’ northeastern region. Its environment is rather unfavorable when compared to the area nearer the Augusta, sharper hillsides receiving less rain and more snow, then gradually turning into a flat saltmarsh towards the ocean. Regardless, strong primary modes of production support an economy focused by necessity on martial pursuits. This is because, though the humans of Haynes are its primary inhabitants, a great number of feyries, such as Trolls and Natchesirs, also live in the Athenland, bringing great violence and grief upon the people.

Prior to the current month, the economic future of Athenland appeared quite grim. Though the tenacity of Haynesfolk pulled the country through, their kings have led them to great defeats against feyries in the past (most prominently the Skifflings, who almost seized their capital). Currently, similar royal blunders leave many towns in peril, such as the Baruch’s Falwick occupied by the Natchesirs. On top of this still lingered the issue of the king’s exploitation of Athenland, returning little for the country’s development and defense while focusing on his capital in the west.

However, a recent miracle has sparked a great flame of hope for the land. A trio of landed lords in Haynes bound themselves together in an arrangement known as the Attenlund Union, which provides for cooperative defense, production, and maintenance of their integrity in spite of the failing central government. They were soon joined by two dukes of their country, forming the broader Ducal Union around the prior. This further expounded upon the vital need to order their own private properties against the oversteps and mismanagements of the king of Haynes. Combined with their manifesto aimed at improving their country as a whole, these developments create a very bright future for an Athenland free of overbearing royal inhibitions.

Athenland is a country with rich soil and hills, meaning the direct imports of commodities for mina is likely undesirable. However, for those holding contact with the lords of Athenland, it may be feasible to trade steel and foodstuffs to help fill stores in the face of their existential threats. Given the nature of these threats, and the lack of large industry in Athenland, complex equipment such as cannons, war wagons, and general armings are likely desirable. The lords of this country may also be receptive to investments in new mines or ranch land, but the current threats of feyries or seizure by the king make the establishments of such risky.

Providence

Providence is the capital city of the massive Holy Orenian Empire, serving as an economic hub for the country itself as well as traders from all about Almaris. Its population exceeds that of some small countries, meaning returns on successful businesses are absolutely unrivaled. Robust examples of every production mode exist within Providence and the surrounding lands, though hilly terrain means most of the Empire’s crops grow in the flat fields across the river. The city’s hinterlands and suburban surroundings provide raw materials which the urban core ravenously processes, consumes, sells, and exports.

Economic indicators in Providence, in step with the rest of Oren, continue to climb upwards towards new heights after erasing the panic slumps caused years ago by the Sedan Revolt and the beginning of the Tenth Nordling War. The service economy, in particular, enjoys a blooming period with a growing interest in luxury drinking and dining. High-class offerings of any kind are a sure hit in the colorful avenues of Providence. Massive amounts of money in the crown’s possession brings the possibility of the establishment of new, large-scale industries in the hinterlands. Long term profit-sharing or leasing may prove to be incredibly lucrative if the government can be convinced by investor proposals.
