Brief History

The Order first began as a minor adventuring company, and was unofficially founded in the 1st Year of the Second Age, shortly after the arrival to Almaris. The first seat of the order happened to be in Elysium, in service of Count Eugeo de Astrea and the people of Elys. The order was small in size during its first years, and little has been formally documented. The knights and squires of the order were tasked with offering charity to the denizens of their beloved town.

With time, the order swore fealty to one Lady Eliza Raven-Sentinel, a tormented widow with a kind-heart. When the time arose, they departed in search of a new home, and found such in the Trade State of Sutica, where the order would serve Brynrose until it slowly decayed.

Though the order of knight-errants remained almost non-existent for decades, it is formally making a return to serve the people of Sarissa. Few of the first knights remain, for alas, the old made way for the young.

Notable founding knights are:

Ser William Buckfort, the grandmaster of the order

Ser Kryst The Lionhearted, favoured by the people

Dame Sigrunn The Pale, the first dame of the order and the humblest of all

Dame Gwyn ap Padraig, always eager to teach

Dame Matilda Buckfort The Wolpertinger, the spirit of youth and inspiration

Ser Aldigar Buckfort, The Just, a true knight

Squiremaster Virgilia Mortimer, the strongest of us all

Squire Ava Sirsk, always forgetful, but never forgotten

Purpose

The purpose of the order is to first and foremost protect the community, it is their duty to aid the average Sarissan and foreigner alike. Where a knight of the order rides, there shall be no hurt or injustice befalling on the innocents. The knights of the order are meant to be pillar of the community, inspiring hope where’er they go. They shall be the light that shines in the darkness and the shield that protects us from what lurks within.

Though scholars and physicians are a part of the order, they must all be prepared to fight. A knight has no right to refuse a call to arms under any circumstances. Drunk, lame or otherwise engaged, when a knight’s liege calls for their sword, it shall be delivered. When a common man or woman asks for aid, it shall be delivered. When a beggar asks for a coin, it shall be delivered.

To be knighted is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Sarissan citizen at this time.

Codex
- When the clarion calls thy name, hasten to battle! Thy sword is naught thine, for it belongs to thy people.
- Bringeth auxiliary rations for the hungry, a coin for the poor, an ear for the downtrodden.
- Cast no glove to thy allies, and let none be cast back.
- Restrict wanton flesh, shun lust, welcome virtue.
- Cast naught every blow onto thy foe, for he may later become thy friend.
- Restrict the lying tongue that is like a flame in a man's mouth.
- Bring justice where'er thee venture, but be vigilant, for each coin has two sides.
- Shame upon thee is shame upon thy order. Commit to a walk of virtue for wrongs thou hast committed.
- Fear no foe, but be wary of his skill.
- Grant mercy, cut down no wounded nor unarmed lest thee must.
- Thee needn't understand any faith nor trust in it, but thee must respect its worshipers.
- Cast no judgement where it needn't be cast. A crow may love a raven, a man may believe in fairy tales, a woman may don man's attire.
- Ne'er deliver the first strike, with tongue or sword.
- Thou shalt operate a weapon of no skill, such as a crossbow or trebuchet, for such is deemed dishonourable.

- For our fathers, be just
- For our mothers, be kind
- For our warriors, be gallant
- For our physicians, be charitable
- For our scholars, be wise
- For our children, be strong
- For our people, be united

Ranking
Grandmaster- The grandmaster serves as the executive head of the order, responsible for knighting new members.
Baronial Knight- A Sarissan Baronial Knight may also be called a "landed knight", as they will typically be granted the title of a baron and awarded a small plot of land for a castle or a manor. A baronial knight's title is not hereditary lest one of the sons or daughters takes on knighthood
Knight- A knight is granted the title of "Ser" and is seen as an equal member of the order. They have the right to take on two squires at a time and will typically train said squires in the basics of Sarissan Knighthood.
Squire-at-arms- A squire over the age of 14 will be marked as a "Squire-at-arms", this means that they will assist their knight in combat on top of their regular duties.
Squire- Non-combat squires are usually children under the age of 14. Their role is to perform simple tasks, such as tending to horses, cleaning arms and armour and fetching drinks. Squires are often taken from families of a respectable status, though are not necessarily required to be of noble birth.

 Phrases/Greetings
The Knights of the Jackalope adopt the Sarissan two-fingered salute, if unhelmeted. Should a helmet be donned while addressing a sister/brother of the order, the knight may lift the palm of his/her right hand and present the middle and index finger.

Reminder of the cause: "Lead by our history." Response- "Leading our future."

Word of encouragement: "United we stand..." Response- "United we stay!"
To a knight fallen in battle: "Born on the saddle, died on the saddle"

Trials
The 7 Knightly Trials
- For our fathers
Study the codex well and repent thy misdeeds.

- For our mothers
Share the gift of bread. Bake it and deliver to those in need.

- For our warriors
Bringeth the heart of a beast or foe threatening the safety of our people

- For our physicians
Study medicine under a trained physician for a minimal duration of a year.

- For our scholars
Research a topic of choice and publish thy studies.

- For our children
Put thy back to work. Bringeth three carts worth of ferrum ingots and two hundred hard-earned shillings.

- For our people
Gain approval of the populace. Seek out seven individuals and assist them with tasks big or small.

The Walk of Virtue

Before becoming an ordained Sarissan Knight, an individual must complete a walk of virtue, which falls under the task "For our fathers".
Firstly, the squire is stripped of his attire, down to their undergarments so that they remain in a decent state, maidens are to wear a light nightgown, though it may nod be padded or reinforced in any way. The squire, then, spends a full (RP) day isolated, where they fast and pray to their God(s) or ponder in silence. During that time, the squire will be offered a single bath, either before or after the night. Said bath shall be cold and done in isolation, also. After 24 hour, the squire may seek one blessing, either from family or a member of relevant clergy.

The community gathers into two columns, armed with belts, non-barbed lashes or humbling sticks. The squire's feet shall be chained to both symbolize their binding duty and to slow them down while in both hands, the squire is to hold the order's holy grail.
The squire, once ready, will walk in between the columns. This is where those gathered are welcome to express their displeasure. The crowd is permitted to strike the squire and hurl insults, should they feel it is deserved. On the other hand, should they see the squire as a pure soul, some may choose to instead offer words of encouragement. The squire is forbidden from uttering a word in the process.

Crying is acceptable, falling is acceptable. Quitting, alas, is not.

Once the squire reaches the end of the walk, their slate is cleared. Those who delivered a strike for a past wronging should then release their grudge,
for holding it is deemed unreasonable.

Knighting

After their walk of virtue,
the squire is to kneel before their grandmaster and present the grail in silence.
The grandmaster then kneels with the squire
and both slit the palms of their left hand, first the grandmaster, then the squire.
Once both have bled into the grail, the vows are exchanged:

Grandmaster:For our fathers...
Squire: I shall be just.
Grandmaster:For our mothers...
Squire: I shall be kind.
Grandmaster:For our warriors...
Squire: I shall be gallant.
Grandmaster:For our physicians...
Squire: I shall be charitable
Grandmaster:For our scholars...
Squire: I shall be wise.
Grandmaster:For our children...
Squire: I shall be strong.
Grandmaster:For our people...
Squire: I shall be united.

-Both drink blood from the chalice, grandmaster rises, draws his sword, then proceeds to tap both of the squire's shoulders and head.-

Grandmaster: "Arise then, Ser/Dame ____, Knight Of The Jackalope, Defender of the Sarissans"

Said grandmaster would meanwhile be eating breakfast pancakes in his tent, with his lovely wife and children. He'd tell them not to flick snots as each other while he recalled the nights spent with Edric's own wife...

Estella Buckfort would watch her brothers indeed, flick snot at one another and wonder if she could follow her eldest brother’s footsteps and become a knight, too!

Sionnach, looks up from the paper from her small room, addresses no one in particular,

“why flogging…”

furrows her brow for a moment, gives a slight shake of her head and returns to her studies.
