A Request for Reassignment

A priest recalls the Holy Words as he walks into the Basilica, unrelated to the message.

"Though the spring flower withers and the fruit of the tree falls to the ground, My Word lasts into the eve of the world, and the fruit of virtue cannot rot."

1;5:2

He'd hope the more self-interested would remember them too.

In the same way Martin Luther was possessed to suddenly roast a private letter to the High Pontiff, Jurgen suddenly blurted out "52 Even as My holiest city was sacred in spite of Harren’s rejection, it is spoiled by the blood of kin."

The man was left with no idea why he suddenly said this, but it somehow felt quite relevant to the Emperor and the protesting priest writing in support of him as of late.

To Presbyter Ileana,

Blessed be God now and forever, Amen.

It brings us much grief to hear of the pains you have undergone during your time in Providence. A people who once would have shown you every respect under Philip II and Archchancellor Josephine now spit at and attack you. We have spent many nights thinking of how best to handle the situation you find yourself in. We are reminded of something that Our teacher, Archbishop Benedict, taught Us when We were but a simple priest: "The shepherd does not flee when the wolves approach his flock. No, instead he readies his crook, and defends his flock with all his might."

We often call Ourselves and Our clergy shepherds, caring for their human flock and guiding them to the Seven Skies. While Our just excommunication of the Emperor and Empress have cause members of that flock to insult and degrade Us, We cannot but feel pain and sorrow when you experience the same. Therefore We shall accept your request for reassignment and transfer you out of Providence to Albarosa, to assist Francis Cardinal Albarosa in tending to his flock.

We look forward to seeing the good work you shall perform, and shall pray for your success and well-being.

God's loyal and humble servant,

His Holiness Everard VI, High Pontiff of the Church of the Canon

Ileana nodded as she read the letter, and she found tears falling onto the page.

The shepherd does not flee when the wolves approach his flock. No, instead he readies his crook, and defends his flock with all his might.

This shepherd had failed her flock in Providentia. She had fled. It was a bitter blow. To ego. To pride. But all of those things were sin. And sin needed to be wiped away.

Now, having her ego and pride laid bare in front of her, she could admit her wrongs. She hadn't failed her flock before writing the request. She had failed her flock by writing the request.

As she looked up from the paper and stared out the stained windows of the Basilica of the Argentate Star, as the last whisper of sun crept under the horizon, she made a pledge to God.

In her new home, the shepherd would not flee again.

The Prelate of the Clergy makes some edits to the Clerical Records. "Presbyter Ileana.. Albarosa," he mutters to himself as he finishes making the needed change. He sits up straight —as straight as an aging Cardinal can manage— and eyes the record book with a tired, yet happy smile.
