Spoiler

Forenote: Upon the hopeful implementation of this lore piece, it is the wish of the writer that all Paladins of Tier 5 are allowed a 30 day window in which they may be grandfathered into this subtype with all rituals and facets known. This would require contacting the LT in order to have one’s MA updated with the appropriate information.

Wells of Sunlight

Once it was on the Isle of Sheerok that the servants of Order would congregate in great numbers upon a blessed peak, where the sun shone brightest and blazed eternal in its divinity, in order to perform sacral acts of ritual magicks pioneered by the Arknight, David of Karlem - enacting awe-inspiring works of hallowed sorcery in the time of strife against the Black Scourge, and to bless the land with sunlight eternal. Though much of these grandiose sacraments has been left forgotten, burned to ashes upon the fall of Sheerok or left abandoned in the ruined tower of starlight that Zyanna had called home, the Chosen of Order have rediscovered them in due time; power was sacrificed for power, and further dedication to the Lord of Sunlight allowed a select few to once again call upon the heavenly power latent in christened sacrament.

Spoiler
  • To be able to lead Sunlit Sacraments or create Sunwells, one must dedicate a fourth magic slot to Paladinism. This is to be marked on one’s MA.

  • To teach this subtype requires one to hold a TA in Paladinism, and to have learned all facets of this subtype.

  • One may participate in Sunlit Sacraments or Sunwell creation without having dedicated a 4th slot, but they would not be able to lead rituals or teach this subtype.

  • One must be at least Tier 3 to learn Sunlit Sacraments or create Sunwells.

  • One must have an accepted MA in base Paladinism to take on this subtype.

The Sunwell

(Soulsong, Final Fantasy XIII.)

Sunwells are volatile yet potent fonts of Xannic magick, acting as a limitless well from which a Paladin may draw upon in sacrament. As opposed to a Chancery, which serves as a nexus of Xan’s own sapphire mists, the Sunwell draws upon raw and unfettered Mist from the Lord of Sunlight’s realm, and acts to further usher this blessed essence into the mortal world. First conceived by the likes of David and Sarea upon Sheerok in elder days, Sunwells are required to perform any act of ritual magick, for the Lion’s pride are unable to muster the power themselves, much less channel such extreme amounts of Mist in a productive manner.

The inception of a Sunwell is a highly ritualistic affair, often tailored to the tastes and culture of the Paladins conducting the rite - in essence, a largely freeform ritual pertaining to the themes of Order and Sunlight. However, the concrete requirements are unable to be forgotten; Three Paladins, with the primary leader of the ritual being of the fourth tier, a blood sacrifice of no wanting quantity from the Paladin leading the rite, and 5 Lightstones that will form the groundwork of the Sunwell. The construction of the Sunwell itself is likewise freeform, the only strict requirement being that a space must be had for the nexus of holy energy to form within - with things such as floating wisps of energies and other hallowed phenomena occurring around the site being a rather common occurrence.

An example of an active Sunwell.

The properties of a Sunwell are nonetheless curious - for it is the Sunwell’s volatility that grants it the strength befitting of its mantle. One will find that attempting to place a Sunwell in the immediate proximity of a Chancery would result in it violently exploding, as the structure attempts to draw upon the Sapphire Mists, and overloads the Lightstones that make up its foundation. They exude an immense aura of sanctity in their radius, akin to the environment of a Chancery, though much harsher; while those of the Light and the Gray would be gifted an extreme warmth akin to a hot summer’s sun, the enemies of Order would be afflicted with a terrible sensation of fright.

Mechanics

Sunwells serve as the primary foundation and basis of Xannic ritual sorceries, known as ‘Sunlit Sacraments,’ and are required to perform any of these Sacraments - being a strict necessity for Paladins to utilize if they wish to achieve such feats of hallowed magick. The ritual to consecrate a Sunwell may be freeform so long as it pertains to the themes of Order and Sunlight, with the hard requirements being a Tier 4 paladin to lead the ritual, 2 Paladins to aid them, a blood sacrifice of a significant amount from the leading Paladin, as well as 5 Lightstones which must be provided to the ST upon the completion of the ritual. Sunwells may not be placed within 20m of an active Chancery, and must comprise a 5x5 structure at a minimum, with an additional Lightstone being required for every additional 5x5 expansion of size.

Within a 5m radius of an active Sunwell, defined as the border of the well of energy itself, mundane individuals or Paladins would experience a sensation of great warmth and comfort which would aid in staving off the cold of even the harshest environments, while exposed Darkspawn would be afflicted with an uncomfortable sensation of fear, as if the structure were a bomb that could go off at any moment. Sunwells may be destroyed and rendered inert by crushing or shattering roughly a quarter of the Lightstones that make up the well’s base - these may be located within the well itself, usually requiring one to destroy them via ranged attacks, or on the rim or primary structure of the Sunwell, requiring merely a harsh strike from a bow or a hammer. Upon destruction, the Sunwell would destabilize over the course of 3 emotes - and upon the third emote, would explode violently with a wave of Xannic energy, scorching any within an 8m radius with burns of the second degree where struck.

  • Sunwells must comprise a 5x5 structure at minimum, requiring a paladin of the fourth tier, two accompanying paladins, a blood sacrifice from the leading Paladin, and 5 Lightstones to create. For every Lightstone added thereafter, it may be expanded an additional 5x5 meters.
  • Sunwells may not be placed within 20m of an active Chancery, or they will explode. Violently.
  • Sunwells must be utilized in order to perform all Sunlit Sacraments. They must, likewise, be able to be reasonably accessed and not hidden away in bad faith; no hiding them behind 20 iron doors and far underground.
  • The aura around a Sunwell does not melt Frost Witch magic or make individuals immune to such things, nor does it make one immune to fear. It merely provides an incredible degree of warmth and comfort within its radius, or weakens exposed Darkspawn to the extent specified - that being a sensation of terrible fright akin to being within the proximity of a bomb about to go off. They would not be rendered so afraid that they could not approach the Sunwell, nor would disguised Darkspawn be revealed by a Sunwell.
  • Upon exploding, either through negligence of placement or deliberate destruction, the wave of Xannic magick would afflict any individual caught in its radius with burns of the second degree where struck - for beings such as Liches or Eidolons, this would merely entail a horrific searing pain as they are struck by holy magicks, their surfaces scorched but otherwise unharmed. A quarter of a Sunwell's Lightstones must be destroyed for a Sunwell to be rendered inert/destroyed.
  • For the purposes of powering a Sunlight Forge, a Sunwell may suffice in place of a Chancery.
  • Must be signed by the ST to ensure validity, and RO permission must be granted for their placement, should it be in a city, settlement, or lair.

Sunlit Sacraments

(By Noah Bradley, "Sunbond.")

Pioneered by the likes of the Arknight and the Greenward Cleric, Sunlit Sacraments utilize the power of the Mists and the energies of the Sunwell to perform great feats of ritual magick - acts of ceremony and sanctum that render unto the earth splendorous acts of miracle sorcery. While in elder days it took but one of the Apostle’s number, the rediscovery of ritual magick begot far less potency, requiring a good number of Order’s servants to weave the starlit Mists in such a way. The scope of such rites is vast and varied, lending greater versatility to the Lion’s Pride when it comes to matters far from the battlefield.

Spoiler
  • One may not perform Sunlit Sacraments while in a combative scenario - they must remain focused on the ritual throughout the process, and any significant interruption such as being struck by a weapon would require one to start all over again.

“It was a privilege to be there that day, of all days in the year. We stood upon the peak of that mount celestial, where even the Ten gathered for the occasion - a large bulk of the Order standing by our side. The chanting in heavenly tongues reached my ears just as the warm radiance of the dawn caressed my cheek, and I beheld the sun in all of its majesty upon the distant horizon. A pride welled within me as the voice of Hilan broke the woven canticle, his decree ironclad as he gestured with his lance - the lance - towards the east; “Bask.” And so we did, placing ourselves in leal submission towards the rising light, exhaustion gripping my young and weary heart after the battle for Myrantalos. And then I raised my head, and beheld Sarea with her arms outstretched towards the heavens - and Sheerok was blanketed in the effluvient dawn, a luminance I’d only scarcely known welling in the depths of my soul. For the briefest turn of the sundial, I had forgotten we were even fighting a war at all. At that moment, I knew only Light.”

- Initiate Vathrus’ observations of Sunbreak.

Rite of Sunlight

A favored technique devised by the Sunlit Artificer and revered Apostle, Jared Blackfoot, this rite was once utilized to imbue the very essence of the sun into various armaments of war against the Black Scourge.

Spoiler

A simplistic rite first crafted by the dwarven Apostle, Jared Blackfoot, and is often the first to be learned upon undertaking a dedication to the ritual craft. With the aid of another Paladin, and the sacrifice of three Lightstones' stored energy, one may submerge an object within a Sunwell’s light, granting it a permanent imbuement of Xannic magick in a process similar to Sunlit Artificery, though far more potent.

Once the ritual is complete, the object will be consecrated with Xannic sunlight, preventing it from taking on an Orison as it effectively fills a similar role - though a Blessing may still be applied. The item would possess a constant sunlit shimmer about it, this being a clear tell that cannot be hidden - and the item may optionally take on a more golden color, or shift in hue with the hand of its bearer should they be a Paladin.

If this rite was applied to a weapon, it would possess a muted blessing, inflicting a light burning sensation of holy magic with its strikes - or in the case of a bow, its arrows being gifted this property. If, however, it was applied to a shield or piece of armor, such would benefit from the ability to ward off dragonfire or dark magics, akin to the fortitude of the Guardian's Bulwark, though weakened; lesser dragonfire or dark magical spells of the second tier or lower being repelled with ease, with anything more powerful overpowering the magic within and acting as they normally would.

  • This is a Tier 3 Sacrament.
  • One may only carry one Sunlight-Imbued object on them at a time, for balance reasons. They are passive, meaning that they are constantly active.
  • Requires a total of two Paladins to conduct, as well as the sacrifice of three Lightstones.
  • Items blessed with this rite will always display the unmistakable tell of a hallowed sunlit glow upon their surface, and they may not be enchanted with an Orison - though a Blessing may still be applied.
  • Weapons enchanted with this rite will never be equal to the efficacy of outright casting Xannic Fervor, nor will they sear flesh in a physical manner. The burning sensation is rather light, akin to accidentally placing your hand on a hot stove. This may not be used to test whether or not an individual is a Darkspawn, as the effect applies to everyone equally.
  • Shields or armor enchanted with this rite will only ever be able to withstand lesser Dragonfire, or dark magical spells of the second tier or lower. Anything more potent, such as Greater Dragonflame or a tier three or higher spell of dark magic, will bypass the blessing entirely and act as it normally would. Voidal magic would bypass the enchantment no matter it's tier, as per the Unspoken Weakness.
  • Revealed Darkspawn would not benefit from items blessed with this rite at all, following the same guidelines as Sacred Artificery in this case.

Herald Sunbreak

Once, upon the Isle of Sheerok, the calling of ‘Sunbreak’ occurred upon the dawning of a new year, blanketing the island in divine radiance befitting of Xan’s dominion over it. While the memories of the last light that shone upon Sheerok have long since faded from mortal memory, the ability to call forth a pale imitation of it remains.

Spoiler

Often the most splendorous of feats available to the Paladins of Xan, this rite requires a total of four Paladins to perform - and a great deal of material investment, for this rite requires a minimum of three Sunwells to act as anchor points, though more can be used as additional anchors. It is a highly ritualistic act, as one must establish a ‘link’ between the Sunwells to be used for the rite, done by conducting a freeform pilgrimage of the Paladin’s choice between each Sunwell, and carrying the light of the preceding Sunwell to the next. Once this has been done, a final act of sacrament would seal the hallowed tether, and usher a divine influence upon the land - known as ‘Sunbreak.’

A region affected by this phenomenon would experience a heavenly light to settle upon it, as dark or draconic corruption is suppressed should it be present, though not removed, by the wealth of holy energy covering the land - this meaning that if a region under the effects of a Mystic Hindering were to be shrouded in Sunbreak, the Hindering would return should Sunbreak fade, unless the Menhir was destroyed. This is applicable to all similar circumstances. As well, individuals within its bounds would be given a great sense of paternal warmth and abject comfort, and the sun would seem to shine brighter and far more pleasantly within this region, bathed in divine radiance - Paladins experiencing a far more profound variant of the aforementioned. A final effect of Sunbreak would be that divine influences would find it far easier to act within the Sunbroken region, owing to the heavenly kiss upon the land.

  • This is a Tier 4 Sacrament.
  • Requires a total of four paladins total to perform, and a minimum of three Sunwells to be linked.
  • Paladins do not experience any ‘buffs’ or additional combative potency while within one of these regions, though they may feel far more confident and stalwart than usual.
  • If any one of the Sunwells making up the link is broken, the entirety of the Sunbreak would dissipate.
  • Corruption of a dark/draconic origin suppressed by Sunbreak would return should the link be broken, unless its source was destroyed, over 3 IRL days. Applicable types of corruption include Mysticism Hinderings, Naztherak Ilkgarokks, and similar. Event-related corruption and the effects of Sunbreak upon it are subject to the ET running the event, and communication between both parties is required before this rite may be performed on event-related corruption.
  • Requires PRO permission to perform on a settlement, nation, or lair. If any of the aforementioned were to be within the radius, all PROs would need contacted and would need to assent before this rite may be conducted.
  • Darkspawn within a Sunbroken region are not automatically revealed and exposed. One may not use an individual’s discomfort within such a region to metagame their true nature, nor may one use the effects of this rite to metagame at all.
  • The ability of Aengulic influences to act within Sunbreak, and the benefits thereof, are entirely subject to ST management on a case-by-case basis.

Ritus Sol

A sacral anointment once offered by the likes of Sarea and Johnathan White, the Rite of the Sun may be used in many ritual functions; from branding those who’ve undertaken a pilgrimage of penance, to blessing those who wish to walk the Sunlit Path.

Spoiler

Equal parts blessing and bane, this sacrament is relatively benign in its make, being widely utilized for ordainments, cultural rites, and a myriad of other purposes. By taking an individual to a Sunwell, one may utilize the crushed dust of a Lightstone and the powers of the Mists to mark an individual with the aid of a fellow Paladin - this meaning that the leading Paladin may grant them any sort of aesthetic effect within the themes of Paladinism such as their eyes gleaming with a golden sunlight, a glowing mark/sigil upon the body, or even a brand which seems to faintly smolder with auric embers. Without OOC consent from the recipient, this rite would only last an IRL week, but with OOC consent it may last indefinitely upon an individual. Additionally, the leading Paladin may sacrifice an additional lightstone to imbue one of the following effects upon the marking/brand/etc.

Blessing of Sunlight: While this effect is applied, the individual would be constantly imbued with a sense of resolve, and given additional reprieve and comfort should they pray to the Lord of Sunlight. They would benefit from a minor resistance to the cold, though nothing that would diminish the potency of ice or cold based sorcery, and their touch would herald feelings of warmth and solace.

Lion’s Penance: While this effect is applied, the individual would feel the guilt of their actions far more acutely, their sins seemingly weighing upon their backs. A sense of cold unease would set upon them in their waking hours, and to commit further sinful acts would compound the guilt experienced by the marked individual. If applied to a Paladin, they would feel a minute sense of pain should they draw upon their magic.

  • This is a Tier 4 Sacrament.
  • Requires two Paladins to perform, as well as 1 Lightstone as a base cost. An additional Lightstone may be sacrificed to imbue a listed effect upon an individual.
  • Without OOC consent, any marking/effect would only last an IRL week at the most, but with OOC consent may last indefinitely. If an individual later on decides they no longer wish to be affected by this ability after having consented, they may freely allow it to fade over 24 IRL hours.
  • Alternatively, the mark may be lifted or stripped by this ritual being performed for a second time upon an individual.
  • The tell imbued from this rite onto an individual would be freeform, so long as it is limited to the extent described in the ability itself - a single tell or marking. It would always be active.
  • Blessing of Sunlight is a strictly aesthetic effect with no genuine combative application. Its offered resistance to the cold would not allow one to stride into an arctic climate unprepared, but it may make one feel warmer in the winter should they be adequately clothed.
  • Lion’s Penance would not prevent anyone from fighting Paladins, would not make them kill themselves due to guilt, etc. "Sin" refers to actions that the marked individual would personally hold to be morally wrong or abhorrent.

Warden’s Judgement

Wrought through one of the few periods of clarity and calm experienced by Azrael Athna, some foes upon Sheerok were far too powerful to be permanently slain by conventional means. Instead, the Breaker forged in sacral flame a way for the scions of Ash to be contained on a near-permanent basis, should their containment remain untampered with.

Spoiler

When the Paladins of Xan have decided that an individual is too dangerous to be left to their own devices, they may seal them away - this being done only with explicit OOC consent from the individual. This is done by a number of Paladins taking the individual, bound and restrained, to a Sunwell of choice, and conducting this rite over the course of [5] emotes. Upon the conclusion of the ritual, which is left freeform and to the Paladins’ design, the individual would be wreathed in silver Mists and suspended within the center of the Sunwell - the structure thereafter falling inert as it becomes solely dedicated to the containment of its prisoner. While sealed away, an individual would not age or perish, effectively soft-shelved until their release - unable to act under their own power, though remaining conscious during their imprisonment.

The number of Paladins required varies depending on what is being contained. Descendants or Phantoms require [2] Paladins, constructs such as Eidolons, Draugars or Darkstalkers taking [3], and finally things such as Nephilim, Arch-Liches, Vargr, Fjaurriagua and Frost Mothers, Wights, or Siliti taking [4]. Event entities and their ability to be contained is subject to E.T discretion, and the difficulty thereof.

  • This is a Tier 5 Sacrament.
  • This rite requires explicit OOC consent from the individual being contained - the ritual simply failing should consent not be given. Once subjected to Warden’s Judgement, the only way to escape it is by the Sunwell being destroyed as the individual is unable to act under their own power. If this rite is interrupted in any significant manner, per the guidelines of Sunlit Sacraments, it would fail and must be done all over again.
  • Requires anywhere from 2-4 Paladins to perform, depending on what they wish to contain.
  • While imprisoning an individual, the Sunwell would fall mostly inert and unable to be used for rituals, its light turned silver and the individual visibly contained within its vortex of energy.
  • Should an individual be released, they must be notified of such.
  • The Sunwell must be physically capable of holding its prisoner - if they are physically larger than the Sunwell, the rite would fail.
  • Should it be shown that the individual was OOCly harassed or coerced into consenting to this rite, they may contact ST management to have the roleplay voided at managerial discretion.

Sacrament of Legacy

The reverence of heroes is an aged and stalwart tradition amongst the followers of Xan - their tales and legends passed down through generations. To honor the legacy of the fallen, the Lion’s Pride soon found it fitting that the arms and armor they once bore would carry whispers of their bearer’s history, and be utilized for hopeful communion.

Spoiler

A wondrous rite reserved for the fallen and honored amongst the ranks of the Chosen, this sacrament requires a total of five Paladins to perform, the OOC consent of the individual to be contacted, and the sacrifice of several Lightstones. This entails taking a previous treasured possession of the Paladin who’s legacy they wish to enshrine to a Sunwell, and conducting a ritual to attempt to call upon their spirit within the Immaculate Palace - this requiring a roll out of 20, with success being a roll of 10+. The roll threshold may be lowered by 4 if an additional two Paladins are present. If successful, the individual’s voice would be heard from within the Sunwell, and they may be asked whether or not they would allow their legacy to be enshrined in the offered object.

Those who have been contacted in this way may demand a series of tasks be performed before they may allow the item to be blessed with their legacy, or they may simply allow it outright. Once one’s legacy has been enshrined upon an item, which must be signed by the ST, it would carry an impression of their personality, and an ethereal decoration of the fallen Paladin’s choice; this may be glowing script detailing their story, a particular scene engraved upon the item, etc. One may even hear faint whispers to come from the item to be heard by all, though this is nothing more than aesthetic flair. This item may then later be used to attempt to contact the fallen Paladin for guidance at a Sunwell, using the aforementioned rolling system - a successful communion allowing them to appear as a mist-woven silhouette for a maximum duration of 2 narrative hours before they depart, tending to their duties in the Immaculate Palace once more.

  • This is a Tier 5 Sacrament.
  • This rite requires a total of five Paladins to perform, and a cost of several Lightstones. The individual being contacted must OOCly consent to communion, and IRPly consent to their legacy being enshrined into one of their former possessions. The threshold bonus does not stack beyond the additional two paladins, meaning the lowest threshold is a roll of 6+ for success.
  • Individuals being communed with may not divulge their cause of death, following normal death rules. An ST must be present to oversee communion attempts utilizing the Enshrined Legacy. They may, additionally, not divulge the identities of current and active Darkspawn to 'reveal' them, be used to teach magics or smithing techniques for lore-relevant materials such as Thanhium, the weaknesses of CA Darkspawn, etc.
  • Individuals being communed with may only speak of and share information on what they knew in life, and would know nothing of Xan and his plans.
  • Items with an Enshrined Legacy must be signed by the ST to ensure validity. They may be freely enchanted according to their size, with the Enshrined Legacy not taking up an enchantment slot.
  • The whispers emitted by an item will only ever be aesthetic flair, the object is not actually sapient nor does it possess a memory.

This piece was mainly conceived as part of a months-long plan, originally decided on by myself and Johann. It was written out of a desire to expand Paladinism beyond being a solely combat-based magic, and to expand the ability of the community to provide compelling roleplay and give them additional tools with which to shape a given narrative through a series of rituals that, while not combatively based, certainly would serve to spur roleplay and drive folks to engage with the larger world, and for the larger world to engage with the Paladins. In addition to the now-rich cultural base of the Paladins of Xan, it is my hope that this addition will serve to expand the horizons of the larger scope of Xannic magic, and allow for some truly unique stories and events to unfold. The nature of Sunwells is such that they can never really be made within Paladin strongholds, instead needing to be located out in the world itself, allowing for more open engagement and the potential for easier destruction - things that lend well with the cornerstone spells of this addition.

Oh don't you worry, once I'm done fixing Mystics I'll be poking one of the lizards regarding an idea Ryloth had.

I like the idea/concept but some parts come off very spook-esque. I don't like, for example though I'm sure other parts fit in here too, the idea of Paladins being able to basically brand people to feel bad if they badmouth Xan or Paladins, it seems very uh...not Paladin-y. Also I wish the Sunwell creation required either specifically the lead Paladin's blood OR a spook's blood, the implication of potentially 'draining' some innocent civilian of blood to create it doesn't fit the paladin narrative.

Well written though.

Well written though.

That function was originally intended to stand in as the former Penance brand that we had under the creed-based system, though I can see how it'd be taken that way. I'll figure out how to rework it to not be a spooky but still able to be smacked on paladins or non-paladins alike.

I can specify the blood sacrifice to be a Paladin. Honestly didn't think of people using civvies for the Sunwells but you're correct in that, as written, people could honestly just use a normal person's blood. It will be amended to fix that shortcoming.

Thank you for the constructive criticism, chief. o7

Edit: Changes applied, refer to Changelog.

This Lore has been accepted. Moved to Implemented Lore, it will be sorted to it's appropriate category soon. Please note that if this is playable lore, such as a magic or CA, you will need to write a guide for this piece. You will be contacted regarding the guide (or implementation if it isn’t needed) shortly.
