THE DARKNESS OF THE ANCESTRAL REALM

It is said that one's life can be shaped entirely by the Spirits, if they so desire to set their sights upon your fleeting mortality. Nay, that we are helpless puppets in the face of those great and terrible entities that would seek to materialize their destructive potential in the world of men. Indeed, this is no more evident that in the case of Ixli, the Immortal Spirit of Forbidden Knowledge. For when his unwavering focus sets upon you, there is little escape from the insanity that will inevitably destroy your mind and body.

Before the Ish'Urkal discovered the Tome of Ixli, it was read by another, who had been picked after careful observation.

An unremarkable Orc with little known heritage to call upon; a runt of the litter, for all intents and purposes. Gabulrag had suffered at the hands of his peers for many decades within his Orcish settlement, for he had not the courage or strength to walk alongside his peers. Instead, he would stumble behind them for years in pursuits of recognition. With particular fervor he would attain the respect he had hungered for, and yet his insatiable appetite would never allow him peace of mind, for he had been scarred at such a young age to desire respect and domination.

Ixli saw in him a conduit; a suitable vessel through which to interact with the world, one that would sacrifice all in the pursuit of power and recognition. And so was the Tome of Ixli presented to him, and so did he read its many pages with fascination and newfound hope. It was not long before he had adopted the Dark Arts of the Ish'Urkal, and he began to consume the many helpless Spirits that fell to his fiendish plots.

Indeed, his pursuits were remarkable. Before long he had eaten many Spirits, destroyed many settlements, and crippled the world around him in an insatiable need for fear. Yet the price of his deal with Ixli would soon come to bear a great burden upon him.

Yes, the Spirits of Mental Instability sought him, and clung to him with such strength that his mind would be weighted down by crippling insanity. In a great irony, he had consumed so much that he had lost himself, and soon his body was torn asunder as he was unable to remain tethered to the mortal realm.

GABULRAG

"A festering, putrid creature of unimaginable size. His gaping maw expresses but one emotion as rivers of drool cascade around you: Hunger.

And he does not relent, nor does he communicate. He only stares, long enough to shrivel your heart in fearful anticipation."

And so did Gabulrag, the Devourer materialize within Stargush'Stroh, no longer a semblance of his former self. His soul had been manipulated and corrupted to such unrecognizable lengths that he appeared an abomination before his Ancient Peers; those early Dark Shamans who had escaped to the realm of the Ancestral Spirits.

Ixli had ripped all sanity from his mind, but he had allowed him the one emotion that Gabulrag had been unable to satisfy for the entirety of his life. Indeed, he looked around at his new home and salivated, for the prospect of dominion inspired him once more. He crashed toward his peers in a horrifying display, for in him he recognised his latent abilities. Somehow, he was capable of consuming Spirits even in Stargush'Stroh. It seemed Ixli had taught him an unspeakable act; Perhaps to rid the Ancestral Realm of his failed earlier iteration, or perhaps for his own terrible amusement?

Yet the Devourer recognised that his power would yield no result without those to witness it; a lesson he had learned in his mortal life. And so, those that Gabulrag did not consume, he instead thrust together in a display of enormous power, morphing them into crippled, unholy figures that were helpless but to work under his forced ruling.

Lingerers are innately connected to Gabrulag and may utilize his “ blessing” akin to the blessing and tools of Dom, though with a darkened aura, or twisted appearance.

They wander his realm in writhing agony, awaiting the final results of Gabulrag's latest scheme. It is he who rules over the Figuga’Uzg, an ouroboros of eternal strength helplessly devoured by dark and abandoned forces.  Contacting Gabrulag is near impossible as his known time has far since passed, and the Figuga’Uzg is inaccessible due to its broken bridge. Still, with his lingerers and remnants of what once was, the Ancestral Antagonist may raise his crooked hand once more.

Redlines:
Gabrulag exists as an antagonistic force within the Ancestral Realm, he cannot manifest within the Mortal realm.
Gabrulag cannot teach magics, he merely is a hungry colossus who rules over the Figuga’Uzg.

Directly/Physically Interacting with Gabrulag requires acknowledgement of a potential PK from conflict with him.
For Gabrulag to take action in the Mortal Realm, ST permission must be required, as the extent of his power and abilities could range from dark shaman variants, to other magics exploited by Lingerers and Inferis. His strength would be above the Zar'kiel, but below though Zar'rokul.

Lingerer:
REQ: T3 Lutauman to interact with a Lingerer

Purpose
After the removal of the Inferis from the Ancestral Realm, the dangers of the spiritual afterlife and many of its notorious characters were left uncertain due to revisions in lore. Lingerers serve as a final piece to dark shamanism, as a way to invoke those damned characters without needlessly expanding into confusing magics.  A Lingerer, or rather, a Dark Ancestral is what remains of Dark Shamans, Whitewashes, and the undesirables who linger within the dark parts of the Ancestral Realm. All lights must fade, and so when the living linger in the Fîgûga Uzg, they become Lingerers. The land is dark, near impossible, though those with wicked heart may briefly peer through the fog.

Lingerers are often deceased dark shamans of various iterations, and their cabal. Most of their mind is lost to the darkness, though they seek one thing. To return to the Mortal Realm, and continue to invoke chaos.  Lingerers may escape from the Figuga’Uzg and dwell within other parts of the Ancestral Realm, but their home- their empire dwells beyond normal reach. With the proper contact and tools, one may reach a Lingerer.

Once there, a lutuaman, or unfortunate soul may ask 3 questions. A Lingerer can lie however, only once and is limited by its knowledge on the Mortal Plane and what it has observed.  Once the three questions are asked, the Lingerer is freed from the chains of the Figuga’Uzg. They are able to freely travel the Ancestral Realm, though are still tethered to Kor’s domain.  If fewer/more questions are asked, the Lingerer is granted the ability to possess the body, and the host is trapped within the Fîgûga Uzg, until freed by a Lutauman.  An imprisoned Lingerer is free to trick the prospective travelers with hallucinations, false questions, or other subversions.

Possession allows the Lingerer to utilize the spells and body of the lutuaman. They are free to act, utilizing the mortal vessel freely as if they were born naturally inside of it. Parts of speech, languages, and magic may be lost, but can be regained over time as the Lingerer sinks its roots deeper into the mortal shell of the lutauman.  If the Lingerer stays within the Mortal Realm for 1 cactus month, the Lingerer permanently remains within the body, and the host’s soul is made a Lingerer in its stead.  Within the Ancestral realm, A Lingerer’s form is near-ethereal, tethered and held together by spiritual energies rather than bone and sinew. They are slightly weaker than the average descendant and more fragile, but not made for intense physical combat. They do not breathe or sleep, or feel pain, lest brought on by magic.

 Abilities:
While possessed, a mortal Lingerer has a few abilities.

Feast: A Lingerer however, must eat. Born from the darkness of  Fîgûga Uzg,  Lingerers devour light, and are able to pull upon its unnatural sources (fire, glowstone, lights, bioluminescence), in a range of 15 blocks over a course of  5 emotes. This ability is not feasible in direct sunlight.

Spirit Walk: While the Figuga’Uzg is inaccessible to normal shamans and other Ancestrals, Lingerers are free to travel to the accursed city in the same way lutauman may Spirit walk to the Ancestral Plane.

Redlines:
-Lingerers only gain two abilities and have no other spiritual prowess, regardless of the character.

-Lingerers take time to familiarize themselves into the new body and are unable to speak, cast magic, or fight at full strength for the first cactus day.
-Lingerers cannot learn new magics that conflict with shamanism.

Weaknesses:
A descendant-possessed Lingerer will bear darkened tattoos and an eternally somber face.  Others may note the change in personality and tone, and a Lingerer often makes little attempt to hide it. A possessed Lingerer may be purged by 2 lutauman- one to summon Kor and another to cast the dark creature out. However, this does not return the soul to its mortal shell, and those who seek to save it must venture to the Ancestral Realm. A tether to find the separated soul must be used to pull the soul back to the Mortal Realm.

Thank you to Smawton for Gabulrag, i merely tweaked his addition slightly for this submission. Thank you to the past writers of Lingerers, as I think this possession mechanic without adding any true new abilities, construct confusion, or dark shaman abilities serves a better place for Dark shamanism and future interaction with the old magics.

*Note the blessing of Dom is only possible if Lutauman blessings are accepted, otherwise it will be removed from the submission.
