BACKGROUND

    Rocks are naturally occurring masses of minerals which can be found in almost any place where a person might find themselves. Composed of various earth elements, these rather hard things form in a number of different ways, and so generally, rocks fall under three broad classifications; igneous rocks, which form with the cooling of magma, sedimentary rocks which form when deposits of mineral sediment lithify over the course of great spaces of time, and metamorphic rocks, which form when preexisting rocks are transfigured by extreme amounts of heat and pressure. Rocks, generally, from the humble limestone to black and lustrous obsidian, have been used by descendantkind for various uses since before the beginning of written history, when it was used in the fashioning of primitive tools. Today, they are most often used for decorative or constructive purposes.

 

HARVESTING
    Rocks of all sorts can be easily harvested by taking a walk and picking them up along the road. For greater quantities or larger chunks of stone, however, one may choose to dig a quarry or a mining tunnel. Literally any person with a mind to do so can find and collect a rock.

APPLICATIONS (Raw)
    In their raw form, rocks are quite mundane. They can be round, square, jagged, rough, smooth, brittle or hard. Really, it just depends on the sort of rock. Without refinement, they can be used for decoration or for various practical uses. Most popular of these uses is to utilize the rock as a thrown missile, most often at casting mages or the homeless. In a pinch one could also use a rock to cave in a skull, or use a particularly pointy stone to damage soft material or dig holes.

 

REFINING

    Rocks can be refined in many different ways. Some rocks are cut into blocks to make bricks, some - such as flint - are knapped to make blades and spearheads, and others still are cut and polished for decorative purposes. Below are some d

 

APPLICATIONS (Refined Form)

    Once refined, rocks can be used in a great variety of ways. The most common use, of course, is the making of bricks and - along with the similar material, sand - concrete. If one happens to be a barbarian lacking the enlightenment of the modern age, or is simply desperate, they may also choose to make tools and weapons out of sharpened rock. Such individuals should be warned, however, that tools and weapons made of stone kind of suck and are outperformed by pretty much any other alternative except for one’s bare hands. That is of course unless you have a golemic hand, in which case said hand is itself a stone tool.

PURPOSE

In geology, rock (or stone) is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter. It is categorized by the minerals included, its chemical composition, and the way in which it is formed. Rocks form the Earth's outer solid layer, the crust, and most of its interior, except for the liquid outer core and pockets of magma in the asthenosphere. The study of rocks involves multiple subdisciplines of geology, including petrology and mineralogy. It may be limited to rocks found on Earth, or it may include planetary geology that studies the rocks of other celestial objects. Rocks are usually grouped into three main groups: igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools in the Earth's crust, or lava cools on the ground surface or the seabed. Sedimentary rocks are formed by diagenesis and lithification of sediments, which in turn are formed by the weathering, transport, and deposition of existing rocks. Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks are subjected to such high pressures and temperatures that they are transformed without significant melting. Humanity has made use of rocks since the earliest humans. This early period, called the Stone Age, saw the development of many stone tools. Stone was then used as a major component in the construction of buildings and early infrastructure. Mining developed to extract rocks from the Earth and obtain the minerals within them, including metals.
