NOTICE OF PASSING

Issued on the 5th of the Sun’s Smile, 1896, at Corwinsburg

IT IS WITH great sadness that the House of Alstreim hereby announces the unexpected passing of Heinrich Franz von Alstreim, the Prince of Merryweather and head of the House of Alstreim, who has passed away in his sleep as the result of wounds received in faithful service to King and Country on the 5th of the Sun’s Smile, 1896, at the age of fifty-four. Corwinsburg and the Alstreim territories mourn his passing greatly, and pray for Saint Ottomar’s intercession in these dark times.

Never having wed and thus having produced no heirs, nor having named a successor, the Prince’s sister, Calliope Renata, is to take charge as Regent during the period of transition. The House of Alstreim remains committed to the practice of Renatian succession, and its members shall convene amongst themselves in regards to settling the matter of inheritance.

Though she never admitted it to him, Calliope had always looked up to Heinrich; during the long days of her training in Fausten, and then her former duties as a nun of the sisterhood, she admired her eldest brother's resolute bravery in the face of immense personal tragedy. Dull and uninterested as he might have appeared to the general public, she knew of his resilience and his intelligence, and aided in his efforts to steer the course of their royal House towards survival, then prosperity, during the Century of Humiliation.

Heinrich was now gone, and along with Mathilda's passing, left a gaping void in her heart that no prayer nor the call to regency could mend.

As eyes observed the living in the heavens, Nikita turned her head. "all vyr affairs of the living seem to be settled. I apologize for leaving vy with so much to accomplish and so little advice. But vy performed considerably better than I did at your age." Her words were soothing as she saw the form of her son take shape in the sky clear. She at last saw her son for who he really was, not the idealized version she had been unable to see as he grew up. She caught a glimpse of him walking toward her, magnificent in all his flaws. the person she had given up her own life for, and felt a thrill of satisfaction.

Spoiler
