A LAST DEED [PK]

Recommended Posts

Wilheim spent many hours of his time in the southern refuge staring out upon the surrounding hills of San Luciano, the place where he informed Carolus of his cousin's end; his mind flipping back and forth between the losses of the night. Baldrum was one of those he spent the most time thinking of.

"Suicidal *****, du und Sebastian." he cursed to himself, as he had to them during the retreat, though his tone reflected more frustration towards himself than either of the fallen pair.

And so he'd walk back into the walls of the city the last of a generation of aging crows, hoping he would make right the losses of his murder over the years.

Astrid Colborn awaited her father's return, along with the rest of her family. Wave after wave, she watched the returning soldiers find their peers, but where was her father? She scanned every face, none of which were his. She waited until darkness reached just beyond the gates. She sat there, jolting herself awake as the sun breached the horizon. Before she realized she had even fallen asleep, she was woken up to the news.

"He's gone?" The woman began to quake. Riddled with grief and disbelief at yet another unfair loss. She had, again, been helpless. Her vision was blurred with tears, and once the tears subsided, she was blinded by the rage. Astrid rose to her feet, grabbing everything small enough for her to lift, and chucking it as far as her frail arms would let her. She thrashed about, kicking and throwing until her tent threatened to collapse around her.

With the fury fading out, she collapsed tiredly in front of her violin. Astrid remembered how proud her father was in her accomplishments, especially those involving her musical talents.

"Papej, Ea vill play for eym." With that, she took the instrument in. A solemn song filled the camp for the remainder of the day, only coming to an end in the deep of the night when the girl was defeated by exhaustion.

While scurrying fretfully after the Siege of Karosgrad through the busy streets of Savoy - her worried daughter in tow - in search of her son, Carolus, Anabel Colborn catches murmurings from the mourners of her wise cousin's demise. At this the Keeper of the Book stops in her tracks, causing young Karyna to bump into her mother's legs. "Did- did you say Baldrum Colborn?" She asks one of those attempting to collate a list of the fallen.

Upon hearing their affirmation, Anabel's eyes fill with frightened tears and she takes off running - even more determined to find her eldest son by this news. Baldrum was indominable, she thinks, Nejthing could have taken him down - nejt unless- unless- The mother-daughter pair round a corner and their eyes lock onto the armoured form of Carolus Colborn surrounded by other Officers. Anabel releases a cry of relief at the sight, rushing with Karyna towards him where they begin discussing the siege.

That evening, once the catching up with everyone was over, the Keeper of the Book returned to her mangy assigned tent - large enough to sleep and write in. She took a lamp and set it at her makeshift desk. She removed one of her notebooks - used for writing first drafts - and began the long process of recording Baldrum's life for his likely entry into the House Colborn list of Patron Ancestors.

An old woman stumbled as she followed retreating Haense citizens from the capital. Her ears were listening intently to all that was said, and made the lorraine over her as she heard of the fall of a Colborn. "May he rest in peace."

"Godan keep my sweet Stasia safe in these times." Parvana Ludovar whispered under her breath as she made her way to savoy.

Unfortunately, Baldrum would not have the pleasure of witnessing her nuptials. Experience the heart-wrenching reality of a world without protection. Unfortunately, he wouldn't be able to witness all the great things she had planned to bring prosperity to her family and Kingdom. Likewise, she wouldn't be able to witness the honor that Baldrum would bring to their family.
