Telekinesis - The manipulation of objects with the mind

arcane_by_babyphire-d2d8hi1.jpg

((Babyphire, Devianart))

Introduction:

Telekinesis is is the Arcane magic form of moving objects with the mind. This magic type utilized the mind to move objects. In real life telekinetic abilities are an often referenced form of magic which I believe will make an interesting contribution to the Role play in Asulon. Many famous magicians throughout history have referenced such a power yet no attempt to bring this interesting form of magic to Asulon has been made.

Additionally another bonus of this magic is that it gives an additional lore background to magic types such as ‘household magic’ whereby the lifting of objects so they may do chores is given a lore background to how this is possible.

The use of telekinesis:

Telekinesis is the direct lifting of objects. The telekinetic temporarily changed how gravity act on objects. This change like in Evocation fades rapidly after levitation. The telekinetic may chose to remove the alteration. A large rock for example would instantly drop, whereas a pebble would drop/float down slowly (Still not staying up for an extended period of time) unless the telekinetic removed the alteration. This like all other types of arcane magic alters things in a way not natural to this world, and thus disappear. This therefore renders the creation of artificially floating objects in perpetual floating state without the focus of a mage impossible.

Objects lifted by direct telekinesis must be solid as the telekinetic can not possibly focus on a liquid and move it as there are simply too many particles to focus on. The same can be applied to gases such as the air and multitudes of small objects such as dirt. This in it’s own way separates it from Evocation and Elementalism.

A telekinetic must focus on a single object in order to grab it. This makes the manipulation of moving objects much harder as it is more difficult for the mage to focus on the single point. However, this does not make it impossible. Mages of greater degree of mastery over telekinesis are able to manipulate objects in motion to a greater degree. Where an amateur telekinetic may be unable to redirect even a rock thrown in his direction a master may be able to control this rock (assuming it is not traveling at incredible speeds and is not very larger), and even redirect fast moving objects or particularly large moving objects.

When it comes to the difficulty of manipulating an object there are a few factors which influence the difficulty:

  • Speed of motion
  • Number of objects manipulated at once
  • Size and weight of object

Speed of Motion:

Speed of motion influences the telekinetic’s ability to manipulate an object as it becomes more difficult to focus on the object and grab hold of it the faster it goes. Some objects may travel at speeds where a telekinetic can not fully grab hold of but may only redirect slightly.

Once a telekinetic has grabbed hold of an object however it becomes irrelevant the speed of the object as the telekinetic already has focus on it assuming they are the only ones governing the movement of the object (See below).

It must be noted that if an object changed direction suddenly and powerfully without the motion being commanded by the telekinetic it is most often the case the telekinetic will lose focus on the object (For example if a telekinetic grabs hold of a warriors sword assuming the warrior swings the sword the telekinetic will not be able to grab hold of the sword and manipulate it, as it is not entirely under their control).

In general the changing of direction's influence on the focus will vary. For example a sudden weak force will not disrupt a telekinetic nearly as easily as a powerful and constant force. For example take a rock baring down from above a telekinetic. If the rock is small it has constant force however does not cause much force downwards, therefore a telekinetic could stop it an manipulate it. A massive rock however could hardly be redirected by a master and would certainly crush the telekinetic.

Number of Objects:

A telekinetic has greater difficulty focusing on greater number of objects as they become more difficult to track and manipulate with the mind (Multitasking is more difficult). This however, is not to say that a telekinetic may not manipulate more than one object at once, however the strength of a telekinetic’s manipulation will decrease as more objects are added. A telekinetic may be able to lift one object, but if that object is split it will become more and more difficult to lift the same weight as there is more to focus on. This therefore makes multi-particulate things such as sand impossible to lift in more than minuscule amounts even for a master, and things like liquids and gasses impossible due to the sheer number of independent and unbound molecules.

levitation_by_Kelume.jpg

((Kelume, Devianart))

Size and weight of Object:

As may be obvious, the larger an object the more difficult it will be to manipulate. While an adept may be able to levitate a wooden table and a set of chairs around it, a block of obsidan or voluminous amounts of a low density object such as wool would be impossible.

Additionally some things are altogether impossible or incredibly difficult to manipulate:

  • Objects with changing surface area
  • Energy

Objects with changing surface area (Living):

An object with a changing surface area is very difficult to manipulate as the telekinetic (much like an object which moves without the instruction of the telekinetic) is unable to focus on an object which moves in a way out of his control. This thereby makes the levitation of living objects almost impossible for anyone but a master. In the case of a master such a subject would have to be standing still and the telekinetic would still be unable to move them at more than a slow speed more than a few centimeters off the ground (No flight can be attained by a telekinetic attempting to lift a person). This is due to two factors: The fact that they are moving, and the fact they are comprised of not only solids.

Therefore in order to affect living objects of anything more than a small size (i.e. A mouse or bigger becomes very difficult) other more easy to direct objects must be used (Such as directing a book to fly at them).

Energy:

Quite obviously, energy is not matter and therefore the telekinetic can not focus on the object. This makes the manipulation of fire, and arcane energy impossible (This is more for clarification).

Strengths:

  • A telekinetic will be able to lift all manner of solid objects for his/- her bidding.
  • Explains in part “Household magic”

Weaknesses:

  • Gasses and liquids are impossible to manipulate.
  • Energy is impossible to manipulate.
  • People are almost impossible to manipulate.
  • Things in motion are much more difficult to manipulate due to the need to focus on a location to move the object.
  • Increasing numbers of objects are more difficult to manipulate.

The requirements:

  • Requires a MA for Telekinesis (Except in case where it is used in ‘household magic’ in which case it is weaker)
  • Requires intellect to be able to learn magic (just as normal mages do).

Progression over time:

Telekinesis will take a similar amount of time to learn as all other Arcane Magic types. I have broken down the progression into a rough order so that it may be known.

  • First Stage Novice Telekinetic: Little lifting at all is possible through telekinesis. (0-2 weeks) [1/10]

  • Second Stage Novice Telekinetic: Little lifting at all is possible through telekinesis. Objects begin to be able to shift with great difficulty but can not even be lifted.(2-4 weeks)

  • Third Stage Novice Telekinetic 1/3: Capable lift up to 3 small objects with no direction such as small rocks or spoons. Is incapable of lifting anything in motion. Sudden weak and non-constant forces break focus (i.e. a small rock being thrown at the object) (4 weeks)

  • Third Stage Novice Telekinetic 2/3: Capable lift up to 5 small objects and direct them at slow speeds, or a single object no heavier than half a kilogram at very slow speeds Sudden weak and non-constant forces break focus Constant forces break focus. (i.e. a small rock being thrown at the object) (4-5 weeks)

  • Third Stage Novice Telekinetic 3/3: Capable lift multiple small objects with medium speed. Can lift objects slowly up to 3 kilograms in weight. Medium non-constant forces break focus. Constant forces break focus. (5-6 weeks) [4/10]

  • Telekinetic: Capable lift multiple small objects with medium-fast speed, Can lift medium sized objects at medium speed. Can not lift anything heavier than 12.5 kilograms. Capable of bending metal objects such as spoons with difficulty. ((6-9 weeks)) Medium-Large non-constant forces break focus. Medium constant forces break focus.[5/10]

  • Adept Telekinetic:Capable of lifting small objects with greater speed and high technical dexterity. Small objects can be lifted at medium-fast speeds and the heaviest object that can be lifted is 35 kilograms at slow speed. Spoons may be bent with relative ease. Capable of manipulating objects moving at a medium speed with great difficulty and redirecting them with relative proficiency (Medium speed is like throwing a ball slowly in a high arc, in no way can something hurtling at the telekinetic be manipulated). Is beginning to learn to redirect quickly moving objects with great difficulty. Medium-Large non-constant forces break focus. Medium - Large Constant forces break focus.((9-11 weeks)) [6/10]

  • Highly Adept Telekinetic: Capable of lifting small and medium objects with great speed and technical dexterity. The heaviest object that may be lifted is 60 kilograms at slow speed. Capable of manipulating objects moving at medium speeds towards them and ineffective at redirecting quickly moving objects. Metal rods and bars can be bent. Large non-constant forces break focus. Medium - Large Constant forces break focus. (11-17 weeks) [8/10]

  • Masterful Telekinetic: Capable of lifting all manner of objects with ease and speed. The heaviest object that may be lifted is 110 kilograms at slow speed. Dexterity is exhibited when manipulating most objects. Effective at redirecting speeding or very large objects. Many objects can be bent. Very Large non-constant forces break focus. Large Constant forces break focus. (17-24 weeks) [9/10]

  • Grand Master Telekinetic: Capable of lifting all manner of objects with ease and speed. The heaviest object that may be lifted is 170 kilograms at slow speed. Dexterity is exhibited when manipulating most objects. Effective at redirecting speeding or very large objects. Metal objects which are stationary are easily bent. ((24-27 weeks)) [10/10] (Increases slowly over time from this point onwards at a standard rate of 5kg per in game year for example at 30 weeks (185kg))

  • Note: The maximum lifting mentioned is for very slow manipulation. Only one fifth of that weight may be manipulated at a medium speed. It is only one tenth of this which can be manipulated at a fast speed. Objects in the upper two fifths of the lifting ability of a telekinetic would require an extended amount of focusing on the object before it could begin to be lifted. A telekinetic trying to lift heavier objects may be able to lift it slightly for a few moments (no more than a few centimeters) and would immediately drop it in exhaustion. Heavier objects may be dragged with equivalent force to the lift.

Additionally - When referring to a large constant force it is assumed a warrior or any basically competent or non impaired person could output such a force. Thereby once again reinforcing the inability to remove things from a resisting owner's hands.

Help balance this section.

Common telekinetic Usage:

Every Day:

  • Movement of objects within a room.
  • Aid in construction (Lifting objects into difficult places)
  • Activation of levers and switches from afar.
  • Direction of objects towards a target (The lighter an object the more easily it can be directed and oriented)
  • Lifting of heavy objects (Would require a master telekinetic for particularly large objects and the lifting would be slow)

Side notes:

  •
  • What is to stop a telekinetic fighting like a swordsman from afar? Telekinesis would be unable to do this as the swordsman, as soon as he hits the telekinetic's sword for the first time will alter the swords direction and thus cause the telekinetic to lose focus on the sword. The swordsman would be likely able to walk up to the mage before he would be could lift it again.

  • Thank you to Benboboy for his incredibly useful format, freddy kruger and roxforbraynz for his feedback and roxforbraynz.

  • Once one telekinetic has 'grabbed a hold' of an object it becomes easier for others to do the same almost nullifying the disadvantage of motion. This is just an interesting idea to allow for cooperative lifting of objects (Assuming they are coordinating their movement) or, alternatively telekinetic fights over a single object. It still blocks all other types of sudden lifting, but allows for telekinetic to have unique interactions which only can be done intra-telekinetic (Of course this is negotiable like other things).

RP Example Situations:

Example Situation #1 - Fallen Tree:

Spoiler

Master (10/10)

A convoy of traders slowly makes it's way along a road near Arethor. All of the traders are elderly and weak as they complete their last route before retirement. Recently a storm has passed through, it's violent winds knocking debris everywhere. Among the group is a telekinetic who is traveling with them to Arethor. Along the road they find a fallen tree which blocks the mountain side road. It is impossible for the cart to pass while the tree lies there. The tree is completely separated from it's roots as it was blown in two, nothing holds it to the ground but gravity.

Velwyn glances at the tree, slightly irritated by it's presence.

"Can you not lift it?" He states irritably

"No, it is much to large" The men reply

Velwyn grunts in disapproval and stands approaching the tree.

"I suppose I will have to lift it then..." he mutters

*focuses his mind on the tree, attempting to lift the large object.

*manages to grab hold of the tree with telekinesis slowly focusing his mind on lifting the tree.

*slowly begins lifting the tree, it moves slowly to the side. A small bead of sweat drops down his forehead.

*shifts the tree, a centimeter at a time.

*lifted the tree until it's center of balance had passed the edge of the cliff. The tree is suddenly dropped and falls the 10 centimeters between it and the edge of the road.

The tree slowly tips over the edge and slides down the mountain, the convoy resumes it's progress.

Example Situation #2 - Bandit:

Spoiler

Advanced (5/10)

A voice suddenly resonates behind Darren “It isn’t smar’ to wanda the Streets o’ Crestfall at night lad”.

Darren slowly turns around to see a small dwarf, not particularly strong but more muscular than the frail Darren

“I’m sorry, who ar-”

The bandit sends a punch to Darren’s face.

Darren is sent reeling back, trying to catch his balance.

“I’ll give ye once chance laddy, hand me everything ya’ got or I’ll beat it ut a ye, ye have 90 seconds to decid’”

Darren immediately realizing he has only moments to decide his course of action begins to channel the void.

Darren focuses on a single brick in a stack of unused bricks behind the bandit.

“30 Seconds Laddy”

Darren intensifies his focus as he grabs hold of a brick with his mind and begins lifting it above the bandit.

“10 Seconds”

Darren drops his brick on the totally unaware dwarf, as it crashes down on the dwarf’s head he breaks into a run, not caring if it disabled him or not.

Example Situation #3 - Gates:

Spoiler

Adept (6/10)

In a recent attack in the city of Haelun’or, the chains which are used to hoist the gate up were smashed in two. The gate is now perpetually stuck pinned down. There are two high elves, one of which who is crippled who must leave the city.

“I suppose I can attempt to lift the gate” Barbu states

“Ayla, do try llir”

Barbu focuses his mind on the gate at the bottom attempting to grasp hold of the metal bars.

Barbu’s mind grabs hold of the heavy object

Barbu’s mind strains as he attempts to lift the heavy object, his mind even though he is a master screams in protest at the heavy object.

The gate slowly begins to lift, it lifts all of a few centimeters before Barbu becomes fatigued and the gate comes crashing down.

Barbu stumbles back, lying down on the ground in front of him.

He whispers “That lliran is even beyond me”

Spoiler

Potential update regarding the removal of 'barriers' and the increasing of direct telekinetic powers in congruence with avoiding similar abilities to elementalists while avoiding potential OP ability of disarming attackers.

- Remove shields

- Keep the restrictions on lifting liquids, gasses and energy as it is currently.

- Allow for the movement of moving objects but add in something regarding to a changing surface area being impossible to manipulate and that force in a suddenly changing direction not induced by the telekinetic (i.e. a Swordsman moving his sword) immediately causes an mage to break focus. As freddyKruger suggested fast moving objects are still hard to manipulate however can be more easily redirected instead of impossible to manipulate.

This thereby nullifies manipulation of people and what they are directly controlling.

- Allow for increased technical control of objects (Dexterity with manipulation).

- Make the manipulation of objects which can not be bent in a continuous structure impossible to 'rip' apart. This thereby makes the lifting up of rocks, dirt exc. more impossible. Objectsh however still may be bent (i.e. A spoon).

Telekinesis/Psychokinesis - The movement of objects with the mind

This type of magic is utilized in two different ways, direct telekinesis and barrier formation.

Direct Telekinisis:

The first method of use is the direct lifting of objects where the telekinetic temporarily creates gravity particles to lift up an object. This like all other types of arcane magic are particles which do not belong to this world, and thus disappear.

Additionally telekinetics often have trouble focusing on objects which are moving as a telekinetic must focus on a single point to grab, this makes the lifting of living objects impossible as they are both in a constant state of motion and comprised of solids, liquids and gasses. This also makes the stopping of even moving objects through direct telekinesis very difficult. Often only objects on the smaller side of a telekinetic powers may be lifted if they are moving. For example if a master telekinetic mage could lift an iron block with telekinesis, if the block were to be sent in a direction at a moderate speed he would be unable to move it unless it was a smaller object such as a single bar. Objects moving very fast such as birds, arrows and so on are impossible to stop by direct telekinesis.

IMPORTANT: A telekinetic would not be able to lift an object in motion. Swords could not be taken from people as they would only have to move their hand slightly and the telekinetic would lose focus on lifting the item.

A telekinetic using direct telekinesis can not manipulate liquids, gasses or things with many particles. This therefore makes manipulation of water, fire, air and ground impossible thereby distinguishing them from elementalistis. The only thing a telekinetic could lift would be a rock.

What things can and can not be lifted by Direct Telekinesis:

Impossible:

Objects in more than a very slow motion.

Objects with many particles (ex. Dirt, sand or gravel) (No more than a cup full)

Liquids (No more than a tiny ripple)

Gasses (Impossible)

Manifestations of energy (ex. Fire) (Impossible)

Possible:

Solid Objects

Multiple objects (Number of objects possible increases over skill level)

Stationary or slow moving objects

Barrier Formation:

The second method is the creation of magical barriers which may be used to stop the passage of an object through a space while the mage focuses on this barrier. The telekinetic directly creates a physical barrier which acts as a wall of energy whereby objects may not pass.

Obviously the strength of this barrier is directly proportional to the ability of the mage and the barrier may be broken easily if the user is not adept in the art. These barriers would be capable of reflecting all types of forces however, as all types of magic are, the barrier is proportional to ability and therefore may be broken by a more powerful force.

Additionally larger barriers are more difficult to sustain, and often smaller barriers are utilized as they are stronger. A large barrier the size of a door for example would be weak, as compared to a small barrier the size of a small shield. A small barrier made by a master could be as strong as steel however a larger barrier such as one the size of a door would be no stronger than a door itself. Due to the amount of energy required for a larger barrier it would not last long (Perhaps by a master 60 elven seconds maximum before exhaustion).

These barriers may also be moved, essentially creating a pushing or (if the object is behind the barrier) a pulling effect. This however does not leave a barrier capable of lifting an object directly up. When a barrier is forced to move it does so in a way where the barrier spreads out, therefore making it possible to move though. The barrier now pushes rather than being a solid barrier. These barriers move slowly.

50008ca1e2fdd8adf9c63488df979a2b-d55ekn1.png

Obviously telekinetics will not be able to reflect objects suddenly thrown at them as their primary method of direct telekinesis can not work on quickly moving objects, and their formation of barriers would take much to great an amount of time to reflect something thrown quickly (As a reference to how magic can not be cast incredibly quickly). However, if a mage were to realize such an object would be coming towards them such as a fire mage creating a fireball, then it would be possible for such a barrier to be created to stop the fireball.

IMPORTANT: The shields of a telekinetic are directly proportional to their ability. Additionally it takes a mage's energy to sustain such a shield and so each hit upon the barrier weakens it. These barriers are in no way intended to be unbreakable. Just like a fireball from a fire evocationst is limited to a certain balanced power, so are these barriers.

For example let us take Dante for an example. Dante is a powerful fire evocationist and sends a fireball at a telekinetic. The telekinetic has only been studying this for half the time Dante has been doing fire Evocation and thus even if he does make the barrier most of the fireball will still break the shield and hit the telekinetic.

If a trained soldier walked up to a barrier and started hitting it it would also weaken after each hit, furthermore for a mage to create such a barrier infront of a hostile soldier would take an extended period of time where the soldier would stand their doing nothing while a blue glow appears (Which no hostile soldier would do). In all realistic thought the soldier would just kill the mage before he had the chance to make a powerful barrier.

Additionally barriers strength is inversely related to size. As size increases, barrier strength decreases. Additionally larger barriers require greater amounts of energy and therefore can not be held for nearly as long as smaller ones.

Users of this magic type will rely on objects around them to perform their magical activities. Many telekinetics find that their magic often complements “Household magic” where they are able to conduct household activities much more easily than the traditional “Household magic user” due to their greater experience with telekinesis.

Strengths:

- Allows for the manipulation of real objects which may be shifted.

- Allows for the creation of magical barriers.

- A telekinetic will be able to lift all manner of solid objects for his/her bidding.

- Explains in part “Household magic”

- Barriers may be moved to create pushing and pulling forces. These barriers however are no longer fully ‘solid’.

Weaknesses:

- Gasses and liquids are incredibly difficult to move and thus even masters would only be able to create a small ripple in the water, and would not be capable of shifting air.

- Things in motion are much more difficult to manipulate due to the need to focus on a location to move the object.

- Living things being comprised of both solids, liquids and being in perpetual motion are impossible to lift.

- Multitudes of objects are impossible to lift - For example sand or dirt would be almost impossible to lift if it were in it’s usual collapsing and non cohesive state. A few of slightly larger objects such as 5 spoons however would be easier (but still not as easy as a single object of equal weight.)

- A moving barrier is weaker.

The requirements:

- Requires a MA for Telekinesis (Except in case where it is used in ‘household magic’ in which case it is weaker)

- Requires intellect to be able to learn magic (just as normal mages do).

Common Telekinetic Usage:

Direct Telekinesis: Objects are directly manipulated. This form of telekinesis is the most basic form of telekinesis. Only solid objects may be manipulated in this fashion. This is the most simple of telekinetic magic, however is by no means easy and like all magic its strength is proportional to the mage’s power. Liquids, gasses and objects moving more than at a slow speed are impossible to move. Objects being manipulated by a telekinetic tend to have a very faint colored glow around them, it's color which varies from telekinetic to telekinetic.

Barrier Creation: Solid walls of energy are created. These walls are transparent, however tend to glow a faint (More visible than the Direct Telekinesis glow) color which varies from mage to mage. This makes a totally invisible barrier impossible to make, however it should be noted that this glow is still faint. These barriers may be used to stop any number of objects in their path. These barriers are more difficult to create and thus students only two thirds adept will usually be able to make them (4/10).

Barrier Push: An energy wall is moved. When an energy wall is moved it’s energy disperses over a greater area and thus it is no longer a wall but rather a force which will push objects in it’s path. The creation of a barrier and the subsequent motion of it is a challenging feat and thus it will be difficult for a mage to move such a pushing barrier until they have passed the adept stage (6/10), and it will be very difficult before the mage is a low level adept (5/10).

Barrier Pull: An energy wall is formed behind a target object. The energy wall is pulled towards the user and disperses like a pushed barrier as it moves in it’s direction. The same learning restrictions apply to the pull as the push.

Progression:

A telekinetic powers increase over the standard 2-3 OOC months required to learn magic. At each stage I have given an approximate guess of what a telekinetic abilities will be (Assuming the student would have a teacher, self taught and the original discoverers would take longer than this).

Day 1-3: Small objects tremble

Day 4-7: Small objects can be lifted.

Week 3: Small objects can be lifted with ease, medium sized objects can be lifted with difficulty.

Week 4: Medium objects can be lifted, large objects tremble.

Week 6: Student begins to practice the creation of telekinetic barriers.

Week 6: Student can form a basic telekinetic barrier which is weak.

Week 7: Student can form a basic telekinetic barrier capable of resisting the force of the throw of a medium sized stone and begins to practice push and pulls.

Week 8: Student can form a medium strength telekinetic barrier.

Week 9: Student still works on telekinetic barriers and begins to become competent with barrier push and pulls. (Near Adept 5/10)

Week 10: Student can form a medium-strong telekinetic barrier. (Adept 6/10)

Week 11: Student can form a strong telekinetic barrier and is improving with barrier push and pull technique (Still basic).

Week 12: Student can now push an pull with telekinetic barriers with medium strength.

Week 14: Student can push and pull with reliable accuracy and strength.

Week 15: Student can begin to lift large objects, push and pull with a great strength and form strong telekinetic barriers.

Situational RP Examples:

Note: These scenarios are in the form of emotes, a little guide on how telekinetic should act. They are done from multiple skill levels as indicated above the spoiler.

Spoiler

Practice Scenarios:

Amateur Lifting of Spoon (1/10):

Gabriel sits on a chair in her home within Arethor, a cool wind blows in through her window.

Gabriel focuses on the spoon resting on the table, examining every surface of it from above while being seated perfectly still.

Gabriel probes her mind outwards, attempting to grab hold of the spoon with her mind.

Gabriels mind catches hold of the spoon.

Gabriel attempts to move the spoon, her mind roaring in protest at the mental exertion.

The spoon trembles slightly and moves a centimeter across the table.

Gabriel releases the spoon and lies back in exhaustion.

Highly Adept Creation of an Energy Barrier: (8/10)

Eloem Laurir focuses on the space in front of him intently extending his hands.

Eloem Laurir channels the energy of the void into himself focusing his mind on the formation of a barrier.

A small blue glow appears in front of Eloem, the barrier slowly forms.

A bead of sweat drops down his face as he creates the barrier, the blue now glowing brighter.

Eloem Laurir’s force field has fully formed

Barrier Push Master:

Uthor focuses his mind, channelling the void.

Uthor focuses on the space in front of him focusing his mind to form a barrier

A blue glow is seen as Uthor’s force field forms and he begins to push it.

Uthor’s force field pushes in front of him extending forwards.

RP Scenarios:

Spider on A Road - Low level Adept:

A spider approaches Acaele on a road. The spider, clearly carnivorous and out for blood begins slowly inching towards Acaele.

Acaele watches the spider from afar standing completely still, not wanting the spider to come any closer.

The spider slowly moves its 8 long hideous legs slowly inching towards Acaele.

Acaele takes a step back in fear and stumbles slightly as the spider closes in.

Acaele glances across to a nearby ravine stepping closer to it.

The spider continues slowly watching it’s prey deciding when the best moment for attack is.

Acaele realizing the spider still observes him, he focuses his mind.

Acaele begins forming his force feild as it flickers in front of him glowing a faint blue.

The spider jumps over the ravine at Acaele

Acaele suddenly sends his forcefeild down pushing it towards to spider sending it into the ravine.

The force field is too weak and breaks

The spider descends on Acaele, biting him... It’s poison seeps into his bloodstream.

This type of magic is utilized in two different ways, direct telekinesis and barrier formation.

Direct Telekinisis:

The first method of use is the direct lifting of objects where the telekinetic temporarily creates gravity particles to lift up an object. This like all other types of arcane magic are particles which do not belong to this world, and thus disappear.

If a trained soldier walked upto a barrier and started hitting it it would also weaken after each hit, furthermore for a mage to create such a barrier infront of a hostile soldier would take an extended period of time where the soldier would stand their doing nothing while a blue glow appears (Which no hostile soldier would do). In all realistic thought the soldier would just kill the mage before he had the chance to make a powerful barrier.

Bandit Attack: Adept

Utility: Adept

Point 1: Powergaming shields. This can obviously be done. They have the ability to make it so players cannot enter, which means frustration and point of abuse by said magic user.

Just like a fire evocationist making a massive fireball or a water mage drowning everything, this has to be balanced it is true. But, you will also note that these things only persist while the mage keeps focus therefore a barrier may not persist, and these barriers may also be broken as is mentioned.

Quote
Point 2: Moving items out of a player's hand. This could be done by simply avoiding PVP and stealing the enemy's sword.

I believe if you read it you will notice objects which are in motion can not be lifted by telekinesis. Furthermore no mage could make a spell that fast to move it.

Quote
Point 3: Overlap of other magics. It could be treated as Earth Evocation to be moving rocks etc. with their minds, and powers. Water, other substances, you name it. What they can move should be narrowed down so people with Evocation and people with Telekinesis aren't battling what is right for them to do.

Note that it mentions that liquids and gasses can not be manipulated and things with many particles can not be manipulated. Telekinesis can also not create things, however an evocationst creates everything they use.

- Can not move water, air, fire, dirt (too many particles).

I'm quite intrigued, however I wish to bring up a few points.

Point 1: Powergaming shields. This can obviously be done. They have the ability to make it so players cannot enter, which means frustration and point of abuse by said magic user.

Point 2: Moving items out of a player's hand. This could be done by simply avoiding PVP and stealing the enemy's sword.

I'm not fully clarifying, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Players could over use these, and delve into deeper things.

have been wanting for some time to get psionics into LotC

some of the Haelphon's comment are a bit irreconcilable, Telekinesis is the movement of objects with the user's mind, so there will be overlap with invocation and possible flinging items around in methods that frustrate some people's RP

only real option to avoid that would be to nerf it to the point of near uselessness, but I don't want to see that happen to yet more magic

hmm thinking about it perhaps psionics could be separate from other magic? less arcane and more its own variety of manipulation

then again that'd require a huge amount of lore and complex reasoning

This sounds pretty good, I think with a bit of edititing and messing around it could cause some intresting role-play :)

I'm impressed, if this gets accepted and implemented, I might consider applying for MA in telekinesis.

First and foremost I enjoyed how you set up your post. It was very clear to read. However, I thoroughly disagree with a telekinesis mage using "energy barriers". I agree that a telekinesis mage should be able to move objects with their mind, but how can they create energy shields. Moreover, it seems like there is more of a focus on these barriers/shields than it is on mental the mental pull of objects.

Whats wrong with the idea of the energy barriers?

When I read about energy barriers, I thought it was a great idea, when I read the telekinesis part, it was a great idea. But then when I pieced the two together, it felt like a combination of two branches of magic. One being telekinesis, the other (forgive me for saying this) alteration from Oblivion. Though I know alteration in oblivion also had telekinesis in the alteration tree (I think), I also disagreed with that.

Whats the difference between telekinesis and energy barriers ?

To me, I feel like telekinesis is the ability to mentally manipulate physical objects. Meaning, the mage is able to mold and move objects to their needs. However, Energy barriers is a completely different idea. This one being a shield of pure energy (no physical manipulation, but rather "energy" manipulation). I feel as though someone could spend their entire life studying the ability to create a shield, and one could also spend their entire life around the concept of manipulating objects.

Further explanation of why the two are incompatible (in my mind at least)

Most magics operate on energy, or physical; though it is interesting to combine the two, I feel that it needs to be separated. If a telekinesis mage needed to create a shield, why wouldnt he just take a chunk out of the earth and bring it before him and his opponent. It also would probably require less energy that creating an entire wall of pure energy between you and your opponent. Take for example a meeting between a mage and a rober.

Robin Hood's evil twin jumps out of the trees and demands ALL the mages money

The mage declines

Evil twin readies an arrow and prepares to take aim on the mage

Stop here now, this is where a mage can go multiple ways. A telekinesis mage has a few options, while an ... alteration mage has a lot of choices as well, let me give you a few possible scenarios

The telekinesis mage responds by quickly locating a pebble and attempts to fling it towards the arrow, in hopes of breaking it.

OR

The telekinesis mage decides to attempt to wrench to bow out of the persons hands using their mind powers.

OR

The telekinesis mage attempts to form an earthen shield from the ground, and place it between him and his target.

Right there, the mage just chose three paths, each according to agression styles (Passive, normal, agressive)

Now, same scenario, but now with a mage that is only but for wards and shields (alteration lets call it for the moment)

The mage starts to form a U shaped shield. The arrow flies towards the mage, but the mage bends his shield and the arrow loops around in the semi-circle and starts to head towards the archer.

The mage forms a wall of energy between him and his target, hoping that when the arrow is shot, it will merely bounce off and no one will be harmed

The mage encases the man in an energy box, preventing him from getting out, or shooting the arrow.

So what was the point of all that?

It was to demonstrate that a telekinesis mage already has the tools he needs to get by, and doesn't need that additional energy barrier. In fact, I think you already have the premise to create a second branch, completely devoted to energy barriers. However, I feel like that as of right now, the mage would have an extremely diverse set of paths, that, compared to other mages, might seem overpowered. Take all those scenarios, now what you are proposing, is what should be given to one mage. I feel that your style of telekinesis, is denying what could possibly be an entire new branch of magic. And thus, preventing more depth from being developed.

All in all, it was a great idea, its just when put together, its not like the glorious combination of: toast and butter, PBJ, or meat and cheese. It felt more like you were putting bbq sauce and mustard on a nice piece of steak. Sure each one may taste good on it by itself, but together it ruins it.

Solutions?

I believe that you should actually create another branch entire devoted to the ability to create shields (believe it or not, I think it has tremendous depth... look at the choice of scenarios. I only named three, and each one also appeared logical. If you need help with the U shield, just think it out before pm'ing me). While also keeping your current telekinesis branch, just remove the idea of energy shields.

I too have spent time outlining this, hopefully you guys can see what I'm getting at. (Instead of having a reduced amount of depth in one branch, expand it out into two branches, and thoroughly explore it)

Replying to you Q and A questions:

Can't move the ground, ocean, etc (earth, water); due to too many particles

I disagree, because I see no difference in removing a chunk of the earth, than picking a shield off the ground with your mind. Sure the mage might have to expend more energy carving out the earth before using it as a shield. But it would also allow the attacker to gain a slight edge when attacking. It also would cause the mage to get more drained, than supposing to pick up a decent sized rock, and not carve it out.

Can't stop moving objects

There are a few things wrong with this statement, first of all, that means when you start to manipulate an object, you lose control. For the moment you start bending it or moving it... well, exactly. I think higher mages should be able to stop faster objects, at the expense of more energy. Perhaps the mage can also "redirect" the arrow, instead of completly stop it. Think of catching a baseball with your hand. It hurts a shitload to try and stop it straight up. However, if you absorb some of the energy by drawing your arm backwards after catching it, it reduces the pain by a lot. Thus, the mage can redirect the arrow, for only a little energy (change the course of it by a little)

This would provide the solutions to create the two branches as stated earlier, sorry for posting it later.

For some reason I cannot +1 posts right now, but thank you for this post. These are important things which will need to be covered as we start going over the magic. Excellent post.

@Kalenz:

Odds are we will do some reviewing of the magic prior to it's completion and return feedback to you as you work on it. Though, noting this is still WIP we will step lightly until we know what you are doing with the lore.

One thing: if a telekinetic can't focus on anything moving, how does he/she continue to move the object? If I move a shield, and I can't focus on it while it's moving, how am I moving it at all? It just moves, I lose focus, falls, repeat.

Dat philosophy!

I think what he meant was that a telekinetic would find it hard to focus initially on the object, and as the boundaries of say, a human are not constant, it would be hard to consistently focus on one, like, say a human was as still as a statue, it would be possible, but the human's surface area must not be changing.

Just my thought of what it worked like.

Otherwise, Do the barriers take energy to sustain?

+1!
