Note:

This was written as an attempt to fix the large amounts of questions about electrical evocation in magic Q&A but no one being able to learn it due to the lack of lore. Personally I do not intend to learn it with one of my characters at this time. As last time I suggested lore if the magic team would put of reviewing this I would be happy. Temporary feedback from anyone (including the MAT) is highly sought after however final verdicts are requested to be waited upon.

Additionally this was based of the telekinetic lore template so pointing out any parts where I forgot to delete a telekinetic section or word is very helpful. I was also unsure which words to use when regarding a spark/bolt/current so that may cause confusion, make suggestion if you are confused. Also note the final sections are still under construction.

Electrical Evocation

Introduction:

Electrical Evocation is the arcane magic form whereby a mage creates Electrical bolts for his or her purposes. Unlike other types of Evocation electrical bolts is intended to be much more difficult to control due to its high speed and high energy nature. Mages who specialize in electrical evocation will be able to form electrical bolts and streams of electricity to electrocute their targets. However, electrical evocation requires much more energy than for example fire and therefore a single electrical bolt requires much more energy than a fireball. This however is made up for by the fact the lightning bolt is somewhat equal in power to the two fireballs which could be made in the same time period.

This magic is intended to add a form of electrical manipulation which has many times been enquired about in magic Q&A however it was never recorded.

The use of electrical Evocation:

A electrical evocationist creates their electrical by creating a charge between their source point and their target location. A small amount of electrical requires a great amount of energy and the further the electrical or electrical charge is from the mage the more difficult the creation of the electrical will become. For example a novice evocationist of a mere 6 weeks may only just be able to create an electrical current which may jump the width of his/her outstretched hands.

electrical evocation always will result in a fast moving product. In no way can a electrical evocationist form an 'electrical orb' as a fire evocationist may form a 'fireball'. As a general rule electrical evocation takes longer than other types of evocation but makes up for this with powerful results. A fire evocationist for example may be able to create and throw multiple (2+) fireballs in the time a electrical evocationist of a similar level can create a single electrical bolt.

It is assumed that an electrical mage will be more vulnerable to an instantaneous attack. However, if a situation is to occur where they are allowed enough time to build up and cast their spell (For example an extended stand off) they will be more powerful than if surprised.

When it comes to the difficulty of creating an electrical bolt there are a few factors which influence the difficulty:

  • Distance between two points
  • Number of electrical points at once
  • Distance from mage
  • Power of bolt

Distance between two points:

Quitte obviously the longer a bolt of electricity the more difficult it will be to create. As an evocationist becomes more and more proficient at evocation they will be able to create electrical currents which jump greater distances.

However, those who are not adept at electrical evocation are almost incapable of generating a current which jumps between themselves and another object. It becomes much more difficult to have a current jump between two points which are non self, than between two points on the mage's person such as between their hands.

This therefore limits those who are not yet adept to be unable to create electrical bolts, just as fire evolutionists are unable to create fireballs until they are adept.

Number of Electrical Points at Once:

Just as a telekinetic's ability to weight decreases exponentially when more than one object is lifted so does the power of an evocatoinist when creating more than one electrical bolt at once.

Creating one electrical bolt or even a small spark is already difficult and the creation of increasing numbers of such cause the power to decrease with each new spark/bolt.

Distance from Mage:

As the intended origin and target point grow in distance from the mage the power of the bolt will become less and less. This power however is constant up until 15m. After such a distance power decreases linearly.

Additionally some things are altogether impossible or incredibly difficult to manipulate:

Strengths:

  • An electrical evocationist is capable of producing powerful electrical bolts
  • Bolts may travel from any point to point with speed and reliable accuracy.

Weaknesses:

  • Electrical evocation takes a greater amount of time to produce a bolt than other types of evocation
  • Electrical evocation is dangerous to learn and during some phases of learning the mage can be incapable of producing any spark which will not injure themselves.

    The requirements:

  • Requires a MA for Electrical Evocation
  • Requires intellect to be able to learn magic (just as normal mages do).
  • Evidence the character has put some effort into experimenting and understanding electricity.

Progression over time:

Electrical Evocation will take a similar amount of time to learn as all other Arcane Magic types. I have broken down the progression into a rough order so that it may be known.

Add an average of 2-3 weeks if self taught or 1.5-2 weeks if it is ones second type of Arcane magic or if extensive research has been done into lightning or electricity by the character (Must be their own research and not read). No weeks are added if the student has a teacher.

  • First Stage Novice Evocationist Little sparks at all are possible. (0-2 weeks) [1/10]

  • Second Stage Novice Evocationist: Sparks can begin to be produced. These sparks can barely deliver any charge and completely drain the mage(2-4 weeks)

  • Third Stage Novice Evocationist: Capable of creating small sparks able to lightly shock anything on touch. Up to 5 sparks can be produced. After 15 sparks in a short time the mage will feel very drained. This grows over the coming weeks.(4-7 Weeks)

    Lightning_Mage_by_yuzchris.jpg ((Yuzchris, Devianart))

  • Evocationist: Capable of creating electrical bolts which on touch is capable of inducing medium shock and small burns. Able to do this within 30 centimeters. Small bolts can be easily produced which jump between two points at a distance.(6-7 weeks) [5/10]

  • Impotent Phase: As the evocationist's power grows he/she becomes incapable of controlling the electrical power they are capable of producing at this point. At this point most, if not all electrical evocation attempted to be done will be overdone and shock the user as they adapt to their increasing abilities. (7-9 weeks) [Essentially incapable of electrical evocation]

  • Adept Evocationist: Capable of creating electrical bolts which is capable of inducing medium shocks. Able to do this within 35 centimeters. Medium bolts can be produced which jump between two points at a distance. electrical bolts are essentially as powerful but take longer to produce than fireballs at this point. Electrical bolts may be called down from above to produce a lightning like strike with low reliability.(9 -12 weeks) [6/10]

  • Masterful Evocationist: Capable of creating medium-large electrical bolts capable of inducing a slightly more powerful effect than a fire evocationist of the same abilities however they take more time to produce. Large bolts can easily jump between two points at a distance. Electrical bolts are more powerful than equivalent fireballs but still take longer to produce (Essentially equal at this phase. Two fireballs could be produced in the same time it would take to make one bolt of equal power) Electrical bolts may be called down from above to produce a lightning like strike with high reliability.(19-24 weeks) [9/10]

  • Grand Master Evocationist: Capable of creating very large electrical bolts capable of inducing a slightly more powerful effect than a fire evocationist of the same abilities however they take more time to produce. Large bolts can easily jump between two points at a distance. Electrical bolts are more powerful than equivalent fireballs but still take longer to produce (Essentially equal at this phase. Two fireballs could be produced in the same time it would take to make one bolt of equal power) Electrical bolts may be called down from above to produce a lightning strike with very high reliability. [24+ weeks]

Note: Electrical evocationists are expected to continue to randomly suffer 'Impotent stages' for a few days every few weeks. 3 days a month would be a reasonable suggestion.

Side notes:

  • Electrical bolts are attracted to large amounts of iron or gold. If more than 3 blocks are arranged in continuous line, all electrical shocks within 15m will be attracted to them instead of the intended target.

  • Electrical bolts can not be projected through metal bars as they are attracted to the bars and unable to pass through.

RP Example Situations:

Electrical Evocationist Highly Adept Bolt [7/10]:

Jennifer stands attempting to shock a wooden block but her shock is redirected by a near by anvil.

Jennifer stands her hands outstretch infront of her.

Her eyes fix on her target - The wooden block. Static slowly begins building.

Small sparks begin to appear inches from her hands, heat can be felt from her hands.

Suddenly the electrical tension builds and a bolt is sent outwards it rips through the air but suddenly turns.

The bolt buries itself into the anvil, small blue sparks can be seen flickering from it for a few moments and then nothing.

Electrical Evocationist vs. Bandit [8/10]:

Aelys walks down a dark alley in Crestfall, the sounds of birds have all but died down for the night.

The occasional bat screech is heard, it breaks the silence of the night.

Aelys's footprints can be heard on the gravel.

Jonathan's footprints quietly shift the gravel a few infront back, he stands in wait.

Aelys pauses for a moment but continues walking.

Suddenly Jonathan jumps out, dagger in hand he slowly walks towards Aelys.

Aelys screms in terror but none are roused in the dead of the night.

"Wh-what do you want." She sammers

Jonathan laughs, taking a few steps forward

Aelys glares at Jonathen her eyes fixing on her target.

Small sparks begin to appear in her hands, heat can be felt from her hands.

Jonathan sees these sparks and immediately springs into action.

His dagger is sent towards her.

Aelys stumbles backwards the cool metal of the dagger biting her flesh. Her focus entirely broken.

Aelys's vision blurs to blackness as the blood drains from her body.

Electrical Evocationist Surprise [4/10]:

Albus walks into Oren, the cool night air biting his skin.

Albus shivers for a moment before continuing on his way.

Winding through the streets eventually Albus finds his way to the palace, the stone walls rise high above the low ground.

Guard_Gerome has fallen asleep at his post, his bow at his side.

Albus walks up behind him, his hands extended out, hovering inches over the guard's clothing.

Albus calms his mind, his eyes fixed upon the spot he intends to shock.

Albus envisions the charge building, fibers on Gerome's clothing lift slightly as it builds.

Suddenly a bright light flashes from Albus's hands, electricity jumps towards Gerome as the medium intensity shock rips its way through his body.

Gerome stands suddenly awoken by the shock.

Albus mutters "Not... Strong enough" and turns to a run.

Gerome looks about dazed as Albus gets away.

"Fecker" he swears as he sees a flicks of Albus's cloak as he turns the corner.

Inept Stage #1:

Lucion stands within Haelun'or a small frustrating goblin stands infront of him.

Lucion's face twists in disgust at the appearance of the small creature infront of his home.

"Go... away" he commands. More than a hint of disdain in his voice.

The goblin simply sits there reading a stolen book, eyeing Lucion.

Lucion sighs and takes out a small stick and prods the goblin.

"Shoo creature... Over the gate with you"

The goblin still sits there his gaze barely moves from the book.

"Yo-You took a book from the college"

Lucion's gaze turns to one of horror as he looks upon the goblin.

"Put it back at once" He almost shrieks.

The goblin continues reading, he can be heard sounding out words barely aware of Lucion's presence.

Lucion sighs and then says "Very well... I shall just have to smite you... Creature"

Lucion stands and outstretches his hands.

Lucion's eyes fix on his target - The goblin block. Static slowly begins building.

Small sparks begin to appear in his hands.

Lucion prepares to send the electrical bolt towards the goblin but as he does so he feels a shock of pain.

The bolt rips through his body his legs give way and he topples to the ground.

A light thud can be heard from across Haelun'or.

The goblin simply stands and sits upon the now knocked out Lucion.

"Pillow" he mutters.

New Student Practice (Fail) [First 1-3 weeks]:

Ashton focuses his mind. His eyes fix infront of him.

Ashton's hand trembles at his side as he envisions sparks.

Ashton glares infront of him. Nothing happens.

He sighs and then stops for a moment, glancing up at the roof of his home.

He sits again, glancing at the floor infront of him.

He breaths in and out slowly, his hand outstretched slightly.

He exhales slightly and suddenly he can feel a small charge

The small charge can be felt building by Ashton

It suddenly disappears.

He sighs and mutters "Soon".

He lies back, having failed again.

New Student Practice (Successes) [First 2-4 weeks]:

Ashton focuses his mind. His eyes fix infront of him.

Ashton's hand trembles at his side as he envisions sparks.Ashton glares infront of him. Nothing happens.

Suddenly a charge can be felt by Ashton in his hand.

It grows until suddenly a bright spark is seen, it jumps from one part of his hand to the other.

Aston suddenly falls back in exhaustion he barely realizes what he had done.

Grandmaster Halfling vs. Orc:

Averroa looks up to the massive orc infront of him. The cool winter makes water condense as the orc exhales blowing in her face.

Averroa coughs and steps back slightly.

"H-hello... would you... erm... mind backin' aways a bit, aye?" She says politely

The Orc lumbers forward "Lunch" he mutters

Averroa scrambles back, her eyes fix on the orc.

"N-now n-now... No need t' get all angry..." she stutters

Aveorra outstretches her hands.

"Nub" the orc replies in a monotone fashion.

Averroa focuses, a charge slowly begins building.

She lies "Err... I-I'm good friends with ye R-Rex! He'll be righ' awful upse' if you g-g-gobbled up his good f-friend A-Averroa..."

The orc pauses for a moment in thought.

Aveorra takes this moment, refocusing on the charge and building it more.

"Yu nub rendz!" He mutters "Me flat latz"

Averroa's sparks slowly emerge, they flash, dancing inches infront of her hands as the charge continues to build.

"Wait! Just a... moment..."

The Orc stands stupidly in amazement, unsure of what is about to occur.

Suddenly a bright flash shoots from Averroa running straight into the orc.

The electrical bolt strikes and the orc stumbles back and falls to the ground.

A slight smell of burnt flesh quickly rises into the air.

Averroa's mind reels for a moment as she recovers from the strike.

The orc lies on the ground, barely conscious.

"You nasty brute; goin' 'round bullyin' poor l'il 'arflin's! I 'ope you 'ave 'orrid dreams! About rotten cabbages, or somethin'!" she mutters before walking away

A very nice and well read, but with this lore, if I see to ask, How were the undead able to manipulate 'Lightning; to their control as lightning is as necromancy, Also another point of lightning that people need to know if they do or not,

Lightning does not affect your body, when it strikes you nothing will happen towards you besides some at rare cases 3rd degree burns, lightning only affects your insides, Organs, your heart with enough voltage shuts down, your lungs can burst, liver fails, all these things can occur, On a rare case lightning can do nothing towards you.

Just wanted to say these things to give people an understanding of lightning,

edit:

The undead used necromancy given from Iblees mindless slaves, in the necromancy their they had Lightning and able to control it, how is it so that someone can use lightning here without necromancy as you are taking a soul spell from it?.

Undead lightning was given power by Iblees I believe. There is no need to explain that if fire evocation continues on while necromancers had their own type of fire. The MAT has already confirmed there may be lightning evocation and necromancy lightning so they are not in conflict.

As for your other suggestions, I'm not sure how that would be incorporated so any suggestions on the such are appreciated.

As for realism... We need not always follow that as the goal is to not end up with 100% realistic anything and perhaps it would be overpowered if that occurred.

I was just giving an example of a weakness and strength lightning can have, as what all electricity has, a chance to kill, a chance to live,

There is no need to explain that if fire evocation continues on

I do not understand this comment,

Edit: deleted last part as was answered

Edit, edit:

Sorry for filling up for time just wanted to ask,

As for the strength:

Bolts may travel from any point to point with speed and reliable accuracy.

Is their a limit on how far they travel as with fire evocation, when the 'fireball' gets thrown for example you have to keep focus on it at all times or it will compact and explode before reaching the point you threw it at, should this go with lightning also?. . . such as it can only go, as far as you can hold your focus/grasp on it including the fact that the further away it is the less focus you can hold onto it?. . .

I'll try to rephrase:

Essentially necromancers could do fire and lightning.

All I was saying is Fire evocation is possible while fire necromancy existed. Therefore the same is applied to electrical evocation. That and the MAT has already confirmed electrical evocation is possible therefore there is no conflict between the two.

Electrical Evocation is creating lightning via Arcane means just like all other types of evocation. Necromancy created lightning through power given by Iblees.

As for electrical evocation having a chance to kill randomly like in real life... I feel that is overpowered however I do understand it is realistic since IRL any amount of electricity has a chance of killing you. In a fantasy setting though being killed by a tiny spark isn't going to be good for RP.

Is their a limit on how far they travel as with fire evocation, when the 'fireball' gets thrown for example you have to keep focus on it at all times or it will compact and explode before reaching the point you threw it at, should this go with lightning also?. . . such as it can only go, as far as you can hold your focus/grasp on it including the fact that the further away it is the less focus you can hold onto it?. . .

When creating a lightning bolt the evocationist specifies the origin and the target. The further away the target the weaker the bolt. Is that not clear? If so inform me so it may be made more clear.

As the intended origin and target point grow in distance from the mage the power of the bolt will become less and less. This power however is constant up until 15m. After such a distance power decreases linearly.

This is the quote which outlines that detail. If it needs clarification inform me.

Hmm I must of read over that part my mistake, Anyway. . . unless I need to ask another question or suggestion I will stop filling up this post again another good writing and read.

I'd always considered writing this, but I will have to say hats off to you. Nice lore, +1. I'll read through more thoroughly later to see if there's anything I believe ought to be changed.

Just some questions

Are the start and end point of the lighning outside the body of the caster?

Is the end point posible of being movable, or has to be static?

Could the lightning trajectory be changed if, for example, a sword is near it's trajectory (iron is better conducter than air)?

Does the caster have control over the trajectory?

I was under the impression that lightning evocation falls in the category of air magic. Perhaps I'm wrong. Either way, props for the lore.

Thank you so much for doing this for me, Kalenz! I would've written the lore, but you beat me to it ;_;. I am eternally grateful to you for writing this for me!

Thank you, my friend!

Are the start and end point of the lighning outside the body of the caster? Either - More difficult to be outside

Is the end point posible of being movable, or has to be static? The end point is set while they build up the 'charge'

Could the lightning trajectory be changed if, for example, a sword is near it's trajectory (iron is better conducter than air)? Hmm... Not right now but this is a good idea

Does the caster have control over the trajectory? I was under the impression it should move in a straight line but it could be changed.

Opinions on this?
