Telekinesis:

Basic Understandings:

Telekinesis is the direct lifting of objects. The telekinetic temporarily changes how gravity act on objects. This change like in Evocation fades rapidly after levitation. The telekinetic may chose to remove the alteration. A large rock for example would instantly drop, whereas a pebble would drop/float down slowly (Still not staying up for an extended period of time) unless the telekinetic removed the alteration. This like all other types of arcane magic alters things in a way not natural to this world, and thus disappear. This therefore renders the creation of artificially floating objects in perpetual floating state without the focus of a mage impossible.

Objects lifted by telekinesis must be solid as the telekinetic can not possibly focus on a liquid and move it as there are simply too many particles to focus on. The same can be applied to gases such as the air and multitudes of small objects such as dirt. This in it’s own way separates it from Evocation and Elementalism.

A telekinetic must focus on a single object in order to grab it. This makes the manipulation of moving objects much harder as it is more difficult for the mage to focus on the single point. However, this does not make it impossible. Mages of greater degree of mastery over telekinesis are able to manipulate objects in motion to a greater degree. Where an amateur telekinetic may be unable to redirect even a rock thrown in his direction a master may be able to control this rock (assuming it is not traveling at incredible speeds and is not very larger), and even redirect fast moving objects or particularly large moving objects.

When it comes to the difficulty of manipulating an object there are a few factors which influence the difficulty:

  • Speed of motion [The faster an object is traveling the harder it is to focus on. This does not mean a quickly moving object is impossible to manipulate, simply that it is harder. For example a tier 4 telekinetic might not be able to manipulate fully arrows being shot at him, however he may be able to change their trajectory so they do not hit him.]

  • Number of objects manipulated at once [More objects being lifted makes such lifting more difficult. This makes the manipulation of liquids and gasses essentially impossible (albeit perhaps a telekinetic could make a tiny ripple in a tiny puddle). Solids like dirt and sand with many particles are also essentially useless to manipulate because of this.]

  • Size and weight of object [Obviously a heavier object is harder to lift than a lighter one.]

Objects with a changing surface area which are not entirely solid, such as living creatures are essentially impossible to lift.

Another special rule within telekinesis is that telekinetics do not face the same difficulties in manipulating a moving object, when it is already being manipulated by another telekinetic. This may be called ‘cooperative telekinesis’ and essentially means telekinetics can fight over and lift objects more easily together.

Roleplaying Guidelines:

Roleplaying telekinesis is a simple process and is far easier to understand than other subtypes like illusion as its magical process is simple. The telekinetic alters the way gravity affects an object, nothing more and nothing less. Emotes simply consist of emoting precisely what the mage is directing their object to do. Let us take an example of telekinesis from a novice perspective:

Oswin steps forwards, procuring a coin from his pocket “You seek a demonstration, Elwen?”

Elwen nods, studying her student intently.

Oswin looks to the coin in his hand and mutters to himself quietly.

Moments later the coin seems to shift in his hand, as if being shifted by some unknown eldritch force.

The coin slowly rises into the air, Oswin smiles suddenly as he watches it rise.

Oswin grunts slightly, suddenly stepping back from the coin. Suddenly it begins to descend though it is slower than to be expected.

Oswin places his hand on his head and closes his eyes as the coin drops to the floor with a light metalic clang.

The above example perhaps is even too complex and at will perhaps one or two emotes could be cut out for the sake of simplicity. It is worth noting that in a situation where one intends to fight with magic that emotes should be timed to your opponents emotes. For example if someone unsheathed and draws a bow in a single emote, don’t have your character twitch in that amount of time. Let us now look at the RP of a more powerful telekinetic:

Kalenz twitches once before quietly approaching the seemingly abandoned tower. Light shimmers in his hand and suddenly whispers seem to emanate from all parts of the tower “Come out igne’sair!”.

There comes no responce.

Kalenz continues to circle the tower before pausing in front of the tower door.

Kalenz exhales sharply and twitches again.

Suddenly the door begins to shift, seemingly beginning to push inwards.

The pressure mounts as the door begins to splinter. Kalenz grunts once.

All of a sudden the door flies backwards before smashing against the wall it once stood in front of.

Kalenz steps in to the tower slowly, twitching once more. The room empty.

Red Lines:

  • Manipulating living things, liquids or gasses. Plants do not fall into this category.
  • Lifting more than one's character would be able to do.
  • Stopping arrows in the air and sending them back at the person who fired it. One may redirect arrows in many directions but never fully stop something going at that speed.

A Recommended Progression:

Reaching Tier 1: A telekinetic is capable of lifting 5 small objects at once no heavier than half a kilogram each. Sudden weak forces and non-constant forces break the telekinetic’s focus.

Reaching Tier 2: A telekinetic is capable of lifting multiple small objects with a medium speed up to twelve kilograms in weight. Medium-large non-constant forces break focus. Medium constant forces break focus.

Reaching Tier 3: A telekinetic is capable of lifting small objects with great speed and high technical dexterity. Medium objects can be lifted with relative aptitude. The telekinetic begins to experiment with objects heavier than 50 kilograms, however only that much can be lifted reliably.

Reaching Tier 4: The telekinetic can lift objects up to 80 kilograms in weight. Very large non-constant forces break focus. Large constant forces break focus. The telekinetic can lift objects with relative speed and dexterity. Small objects can be manipulated very quickly and with dexterity. Medium objects can also be manipulated quickly and with dexterity. Heavy objects are still manipulated more slowly than others, but not incredibly so. A telekinetic two months after this would be able to lift objects up to 200 kilograms in weight.

Reaching Tier 5: The telekinetic can lift objects up to 300 kilograms in weight. From here telekinetic lifting ability increases by about 5kg per elven week.

Note: The maximum lifting mentioned is for very slow manipulation. Only one fifth of that weight may be manipulated at a medium speed. It is only one tenth of this which can be manipulated at a fast speed. Objects in the upper two fifths of the lifting ability of a telekinetic would require an extended amount of focusing on the object before it could begin to be lifted. A telekinetic trying to lift heavier objects may be able to lift it slightly for a few moments (no more than a few centimeters) and would immediately drop it in exhaustion. Heavier objects may be dragged with equivalent force to the lift.

Question for clarification, where it says

Lifting more than one's character would be able to do.

Does it refer to how much someone can physically lift, or magically lift?

Sure, it depends how hard the object is to crush but if they have the power required I don't see why not.

I think this guide might need to include a maximum speed at which a telekinetic can move small objects.

EDIT:

Why I stated this:

Force equals Mass times Acceleration. Assuming that the gravity of Anthos is 9.8 meters per second per second, and T3 telekinetic is able to lift 80 kilograms of mass, A T3 telekinetic mage can create 784 newtons of force.

If I were to apply that same 784 newtons of force to, say, something equal to the mass of a bullet (Approx. .004 Kilograms) I could make that bullet begin to accelerate at 196,000 meters per second per second. To put things in perspective, if I were to accelerate something like that along the length of my hand (Around 20cm) It would achieve a whopping 39,200 meters per second by the time it left my palm, breaking the speed of sound a solid 115 times over, and potentially obliterating my arm.

Basically, it might be nice to mention that the maximum speed is equal to throwing it, or some such.

That comes down to the individual having the intelligence to realise a telekinetic isn't a rifle. You can throw arrows (or crossbow bolts). But no, you can't break the sound barrier.

To clarify, do you mean throwing crossbow bolts with the same speed a crossbow would be able to deliver?

I understand for the sake of negating Telekinesis from being too 'OP' that this is done, but logically this wouldn't make sense, unless it were described in more detail. A solid contains the same amount of particles as when its changed to another state. While the telekinetic may have to account for all these particles' individual weights and gravities while they are suspended, it would still be the same thing, and should be able to be levitated as such.

I suggest being slightly more specific in the detailing in that part.

When you lift a liquid you need to lift every part. When you lift a solid you can lift one half and the other half is connected and will come up.

Nothing in the guide says anything about the void. Does that mean telekinesis isn't dependent of connection to the void?

It's dependant, any arcane subject relies on void energy :)

If you need more help, msg me, PiercingDarkness IG. :)

The void is certainly required to partake in the use of telekinetic magic! Imagine the void as a window, (Thanks, BladeCreep, for the fun magic lessons.) Said window lets you peer through the world, and see what you're going to be lifting. Let the mind choose it's object, and let the void lift it.

Ahh, thank you both for the clarification. :)

How do we get there? How did you get here, by the way?' [Will asked].
He heard Halt's deep sigh and knew he'd done it again.

'Do you ever,' the older Ranger said with great deliberation, 'manage to ask just one question at a time? Or does it always have to be multiple choice with you?'

Will looked at him in surprise. 'Do I do that?' he asked. 'Are you sure?'

Halt said nothing. He raised his hands in a 'See what I mean?' gesture...

'Halt,' [Selethen said], 'I could be wrong, but I think you were just guilty of the same fault. I'm sure I heard you ask two questions just then.'
'Thank you for pointing that out, Lord Selethen,' Halt said with icy formality.
