The Subudai Tribal Confederacy

Lowering
his head, leveling his gaze squarely along the horizon, Sertorius Cagan
bends upon his knees with a severe grunt. His knees have not felt the
freedom that which the steppes could afford him. In the austere look
that the plains held, unrestrained was Sertorius as he looked out into
infinity with only the sun being the definite figure. The cerulean sky
above had been considered the means of calming the mind to the tribes of
past, a manner that led some of the Subudai to consider the above to be
the Void; clouds to be ley-lines. A grin crawls along his face as a man
nears him, a herd of cattle shepherded along the vast expanse, a
caravanserai forming shortly along the grounds that Sertorius and his
followers made of wagons and a camaraderie of nomads and horses with a
cackling bonfire matching in sound and liveliness the sound of the
Subudai the following nights.

Adorned
with his traditional felt cap, Sertorius looks around at the very small
gathering as their wagons creaked and groaned with every push of the
nightly gusts. Noticing all tints of color and forms of the face,
Sertorius feels a presence, an aura once felt in the past; his
grandfather entering in his own nomadic attire and guffawing at the
companionship within the campgrounds.

"Yoo'
hawv' decided too' gathur' thoo'r Subudai? What haws' happun'd too'r
yoo'r alleg'yunces with thar' ancestoors' af' blawd'?"

"Gran'father...
Yer' mus' pay heed, ol' Oren be nuthin' bu' bitchin' babes fer' thar'
same teets, they 'ave nat' progressed inter' understandin' that thar'
teet mus' be left upon weanin' ter' higher ideals. They sit in
blood-pits carved from out valleys clawin' at each other an' may thar'
vultures feed freshly upon every outlaid man an' woman who serves in
such folly."

"Very
wawl', yoo' mawst' call upon wha' tribes may still exist, perhawps'
thar' Kirvel wawld' be yoo'r first desired Kotan. From thar', seek awt'
those hoo' remember thar' ways af' thar' Subudai."

With
the last sentence trailing, the aura slowly fades as Sertorius returns
and slinks upright from his modest sleeping cot across the grass; sweat
embedded and tingling ever more.

The Hardy Subudai

Once
recollected in the Second Continent as the nomads refer to it as, or
Asulon in Common, the Subudai are a collective of transient and
migratory peoples comprised of mostly humans as they traced lineage to
Horen of the Four Brothers in the times of ancient. However, due to the
attractiveness of their practices and their cultural ways, other races
decided to integrate and are welcomed so long as they are hardy and
respective of the cultural manners, elves trace a likeness to their
libertarian ways, dwarves attracted by the far off knowledge that the
Subudai have to a blood ancestor known as the Dervas; Orcs especially
due to the Subudai's hardiness.

The
Subudai Nomads had dispersed upon the death of the Khagan, Sauros
Alanbataar and slowly acclimated themselves in various regions such as
Kal'Alras, Renatus, the Oren Empire, and the War Uzg. Now upon the
ambitions of Sertorius Cagan, a minute band of followers gallop
throughout the four corners of the Third Continent, or Anthos, seeking
all those whom believe themselves to be either of Subudai blood, carry
the blood of any Kirvel, Mongol, or El'Zahir
(Check Here: http://www.lordofthecraft.net/forum/index.php?/topic/84794-lore-alzahir-arabic-culture/?hl=al%26%2339%3Bzahir, and/or
are intrigued of the cultural nuances of the Subudai nomads.  The
initial wave of man-seekers will bring blood relatives to the initial
encampment for their journey on the nomadic path, whilst those who share
an interest in seeking the way of the Subudai will be challenged with a
description and their wits, cunning, and path-finding ability tested to
find the initial encampment before the nomadic cycle begins.

The
Subudai Nomads are known for their practice of roaming known as the
nomadic cycle, it is practiced as cultural tradition and can be urged by
the leader due to outside circumstances. The nomadic cycle is
embellished in poetry for it's act of rebirth of the surroundings the
Subudai have about them and is seen as replenishing them of all taint
that is brought about by crime and condition. Commit a wrong against
your nomadic brethren, forgive each other upon the next nomadic cycle.
The Subudai have a very libertarian attitude about themselves and do not
adhere to petty regimens or manners, this does not mean that they are
libertine (sinister and careless), rather they have a very strong bond
between family and blood yet do not care for complicated and frivolous
systems of etiquette and politics.

Kotans (Tribes) and Jurisdiction

The
Subudai nomads take particular interest in seeking and ensuring the
health of individual Kotans or "Ilk-Kin". Kotans are defined as people
that have blood relation with each other or have sworn the blood oath
upon the coming of age. Each Kotan has a Syrmatae which roughly
translate from the guttural language of the Ancient Subudai, Hukshmai,
as 'Clan-Father' which deals with interdisciplinary features and in
general leads his respective Kotan in times of gathering for their own
caravanserai. Each Kotan has it's own respective cultural practices
whilst also being respectful to other Kotans, the Syrmatae are allowed
to punish their own for offenses against others in the same Kotan of
their liking, whilst cross-Kotan crimes are dealt with in a duel of
blood-letting at the authority of the Khagan.

Each
Kotan is granted it's own caravanserai each nomadic cycle, a
caravanserai is the term used as the living grounds for each Kotan that
is one of many and forms the larger nomadic gathering. The caravanserai
are typically made up of tents, tupiks, and yurts whilst more formalized
architecture can be erected; said architecture is typically left
standing even when the nomads have left whilst the tents and yurts are
packed and brought with each nomadic cycle. Each Kotan holds no
governing policy except for the Syrmatae's choosing.

A
Kotan is ultimately formed by the Khagan's will, decidedly when the
population of the nomadic horde has reached a critical mass in which
absolutism is unwise for meticulous governing. Upon reaching the
population, the Khagan may utilise two methods in which an inspiring
Syrmatae must pay the highest sum to the Khagan in coin, ore, or write
the most appealing story or perform it in the Khagan's presence as the
Subudai are renown story-tellers due to their reliance on oral tradition
for their history; the latter method is a duel in the company of the
entire Subudai in which two hopeful Syrmatae must come out surviving to
be gifted the privilege of holding his own Kotan.

Cultural Ideals Preserved

Overall, the Subudai are nomadic and the Kotans have great respect for the First Khagan, Sauros Alanbataar. The Subudai
are steeped in Oral tradition, but glorify those who can write and
record histories and stories, one who speaks greatly will have respect
alongside the warrior. The act of encouraging cultural and social
celebration is praised amongst the Subudai, the oral traditions speaking much of how the nomadic Subudai
always thrived on the distinction of each Kotan and respect given. Both
men and women are treated equally, both genders are taught at a young
age to be capable warriors and hunters, men being treated with a
drill-like attitude whilst women are taught to be survival experts and
are heralded for being ones who raised the nomadic Subudai from the ground up.

In terms of items of great value, the Subudai
are praised in oral traditions for being artistically creative with the
paints and inks derived from nature, whether from the cactus or the
famed squids that were relied upon to darken wools. Thus different inks
and wools are of appreciable value as well as the sheep that provide the
wool to be shorn. The Subudai also have learned how to tan leather and thrive off of the bull and cow for meat, milk, and leather. The cuisine of the Subudai is variant, albeit many of the Subudai
take to being hunters and rely on the flesh of animals both land and
water. Incense (the 'dry bush' block found in deserts) are very sought
after as bringing calming peace to the Subudai and they
routinely seek deserts for the Incense as well as cacti for their
healing practicalities (the needles serve for 'acupuncture' and the
juices are rich in vitamins) and the dye when cacti is boiled in water.

Wolves are also held in high esteem as hunter companions
