Born to a family of isolated Raevir Old Believers in 1651, Yosef was the last of thirteen children blessed to the Azimov family. Much like his siblings, Yosef would spend his time helping around the homestead when he became capable of performing rudimentary tasks. From tending chickens to plowing the field, the young boy’s childhood was dominated by labor with whatever little free time he had dedicated to learning Ruskan Orthodoxy. In the early morning, a prayer would be said over breakfast, then until the sun’s descent below the horizon the day was dedicated to long, arduous work. Another prayer before dinner was had, and once everyone had their full, lessons in the faith were conducted by the mother and father. For the most part, Yosef was content with this life, holding little interest for the world beyond the small valley he resided in and for the next several decades, his family, the Lord, and the homestead was all he knew. However, with life on the outskirts of civilization being as fragile as life can be for a human, marred with dangers from nature itself, all it took was one unfortunately long winter for Yosef’s world to come crashing down. One especially hard winter with a pitiful harvest proceeding it left half of the family dead and the other barely alive. Those who survived—primarily the youngest among the Azimovs—buried their dead, burdened by grief. Bitterly, and against Yosef’s hopes that they would remain, his remaining brothers and sisters departed for greener pastures, where-ever they may be. For five years Yosef remained behind, alone in an empty cottage with dead, useless soil surrounding it. What little he could find to eat was through foraging the nearby forest which itself housed dangerous creatures. What were once audible prayers became quiet whispers before stopping altogether. The deafening silence of the homestead, once home to hymns, laughter, and plentiful conversation, became Yosef’s new reality. In time, he would no longer find the Lord’s scripture comforting and many sleepless nights were marked by an increasing paranoia. Accompanied by the growing loneliness in his hearts, it was only a matter of time before Yosef’s will shattered, and with what little belongings he had to his name, left behind the land he had known since birth and ventured out into the unknown.
