  1. THE ETERNAL LIBRARY 1st of The Grand Harvest, Year 138 of the Second Age Just down the Main Street of Tahn'miar, a magnificent edifice towers high over the Silver City. Tawny domes arch toward the sky, topped by gleaming marble spires that prod at the clouds. Carefully maintained shrubbery and monuments to figures from centuries past surround the structure, its brick walls complimented by silvery embellishments. Citizens bustle in and out of its perpetually open doors at all hours of the day, tomes and papers spilling out of their arms. Before you stands the ancient heart of the city, one of the first and largest of its kind in all of history. Before you stands The Eternal Library. At the heart of progress is change, and change cannot occur without education. Since Asulon, our blessed institution has served as a bastion for the spreading and sharing of knowledge, the maintenance of historical records, and the preservation of our ancient community. All of these things are paramount to the pursuit of progress. In accordance with tradition, the Eternal Library shall rise anew in our city of Tahn'miar. As of this elven day, The Eternal Library formally opens its doors – and its catalog – to the public. LIBRARY RULES For the establishment to flourish, we must protect the knowledge that lies within, for a sturdy foundation is essential to the integrity of the structure. We invite all permitted visitors and citizens of Haelun'or to the Library, but guests must follow a set of rules under our roof. We mandate six rules within our hallowed halls. Speak with a low tone in the Library. Do not sully the ears of your studious peers with uncouth barking. Do not bring food or drink into the Library. If you break this rule, you will be subjected to a fine or temporary janitorial employment. Do not alter or destroy Library property. Any damage inflicted upon a Library book will subject you to a fine or a public service task. If severe enough, the damage will be inflicted back upon you yourself. Do not steal books from the Library. Thievery will result in banishment and/or legal repercussions while you are within our walls. Unauthorized reproduction or plagiarism of our tomes is considered thievery as well; offenders will be punished as criminals. Do not redistribute Library books without permission. This, too, may result in punishment and/or banishment. Do not use magic within the Library without express permission from elHeial'thilln. Protect our sacred books by abstaining from spellcasting within our walls. Domestic magic is an exception. REQUESTING BOOKS At the release of this missive, basic access – the ability to peruse our collection of tomes – is extended to all citizens and visitors who have passed our gateway vetting procedures. But there can be no spreading of knowledge without the sharing of knowledge, and sharing hinges upon a give and take. Thus, visitors of elcihi'thilln must donate writings to our blessed bastion to be able to request copies of books from our regular catalog. These writings must be submitted after the publishing of this missive. The requirements for these writings are: The subject must be non-fiction or philosophy. Personal tales, journals, and documents will not suffice. The donation must be a minimum of 9 pages in length. The donation must be the original copy. The applicant must author the donated book. The donation must be reasonably legible with proper grammar. Once a book fulfilling these requirements is donated, applicants will be granted a library card for proof of their submission. This library card may be presented to elOkarir’maehr or active mediiran’indor at any time to request books. LIBRARY EMPLOYMENT There are many tasks to undertake to preserve our sacred establishment. A variety of roles lie within the hierarchy of the institution: Okarir’maehr – The guardian of knowledge and keeper of records. ElOkarir’maehr is the de facto Head of the Library. Tilruir’indor – The second-in-command under elOkarir’maehr who manages books. This mali’thill is in charge of sorting, tracking, and maintaining submissions and book requests as well as guiding the Mediiran’indor under them. Mediir’indor: Staff members tasked with safekeeping and sorting our sacred catalogue. Librarians must be deeply acquainted with the books upon our shelves. Scholars: Staff members who teach in the Eternal College and/or conduct research in the name of maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. Foreign Librarians: Foreign Librarians from nations that maintain good relations with our State will be granted diplomatic partnership with the Library. If you are interested in employment, contact elOkarir’maehr, Celestia Astramaris, via a visit or a letter. THE ETERNAL COLLEGE Our books may give us knowledge, but knowledge is nothing if not put to use, if not critically engaged with. On the upper two floors of the Library, we have reserved a space for the Eternal College. Here, we will regularly hold courses under four academies – these academies will cover the subjects of thaumaturgy, natural studies, arts, culture, medicine, and history. The Eternal Library should be a bastion of knowledge, a foundation for discussion, and a breeding ground for progress. I open its doors in hopes of seeing elcihi flourish under new generations of mali'thill in pursuit of the unknown. Maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. 3. IN SUPPORT OF EMOTIONAL REGULATION 13th of The Grand Harvest, Year 136 of the Second Age A response to “An Opposition Against Emotional Suppression” INTRODUCTION Since the dawn of our ancient nation, we mali’thill of Haelun’or have striven for purity, progress, and wellbeing within our silver walls. At the core of our beliefs lie a reverence for ancient traditions; the very ancient nature of these traditions leaves room for healthy debate within the breadth of their core tenets. But in recent history, the topic of emotional awareness has been largely unexplored. What specific boundaries did our predecessors set when they defined “mental purity”? What constitutes an adequate show of emotional reserve? These unanswered, or vaguely answered, questions, left open for interpretation by the coming generations, have become the cause of shifting understandings, dissent, and debate amongst newer citizenry. This article is a response to the one recently published by Phandelver Sunstrider, “Haelun’or Debate Against Emotional Suppression.” Its intention is to be an extension, hoping to provide an alternate lens through which we might view our own history and culture. Emotional suppression is the result of a misunderstanding of our own ancient traditions, created by a dilution through the generations. Emotional regulation and self-control, both distinct from emotional suppression, are crucial to the maintenance of mental purity, and are of utmost importance to the core values that define us as a longstanding nation. REGULATION VS. SUPPRESSION The roots of what is now perceived to be mali’thill emotional suppression lie not in postulations set forth by our esteemed Malauriran, but in a misinterpretation of them over the centuries. I theorize that the teachings of Malaurir Lucion Sullas have been misunderstood: take, for example, the excerpt cited in Sunstrider’s paper. In Chapter 6 of the work titled, “On Emotion and Aversion to It”, Malaurir Sullas asserts that “it is beneath an adherent to act by the whims of emotion– it shows a lack of self control, and would likely offend those around yourself.” (p. 21). This declaration speaks not in favor of emotional suppression, for it emphasizes self-control, or emotional regulation, which is distinct from suppression. To control an entity, one must acknowledge its existence and be aware of it in its entirety – when one suppresses emotion, one denies it full recognition. Thus, suppression is incongruous with emotional regulation. Malaurir Sullas spoke in favor of regulation, not denial; he spoke in favor of wholly accepting emotion while exercising appropriate control and eliminating impure thoughts. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE “Maehr’sae hiylun’ehya” is the creed by which we live, the foundation from which mali’thill society has been built over the centuries. Within the posterior end of this motto, there is one focus we must draw attention to: hiylun. Specifically, mental hiylun, or mental purity. Purity of body and purity of mind cannot exist without the other – they are two halves of a whole that we must maintain. The logical ability to feel all emotion yet distinguish what is ideal to everyday upkeep of progress and health is what defines emotional intelligence, a crucial component of mental hiylun. We must voluntarily control what we feel, abolishing lesser impulses and only allowing ourselves to outwardly show what is necessary and productive. Proper mali’thill must strive for the purest, highest form of emotional intelligence to maintain mental purity, keeping in mind the tenets of maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. This does not indicate repression or denial, but rather the perfect intersection between acknowledgment, logic, and health. COURTSHIP The denial of emotion is certainly contradictory to progress, but falling slave to it has the same effect. Self-control is the ultimate exercise of freedom – a freedom that comes from self-determination of a life unbound from lesser impulses and whims, a life idealized by impartial wisdom. Naturally, a new question arises – what would this wisdom deem unnecessary and contradictory to maehr’sae hiylun’ehya? As logical beings, we must separate that which is necessary and unnecessary in light of the larger purpose we follow. Crasser public displays of affection are temporary satisfactions, indications of one succumbing to fleeting whims. A temporary satisfaction, a satisfaction only afforded to the pair which practice it in lieu of the wider comfort and wellbeing of the citizenry, is directly incompatible with the tenets of progress and health. These overt exhibitions of indiscipline are not only hindrances to the constant betterment we strive for, but also hold the potential to poison the minds of those who may witness it. Thus, I posit that public displays of affection beyond those utterly mild in nature are improper, unnecessary, and contradictory to the forward society we cultivate. This is not to suggest a total denial of emotion — merely an exercise of the self-control we must constantly maintain. CONCLUSION We must not leave behind our roots, for the tree would not exist without them. We are creatures of logic, creatures of wisdom – and within this wisdom lies the sense to cultivate progress through the intersection of self-acknowledgement and control. Freedom through control, lliran. Maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. Signed, Okarir’maehr Celestia Astramaris
  4. From the entrance of the Eternal Library, a pale-haired librarian scans over treatise, distantly recalling the conversation she shared with Nóruiwyn and Phandelver on the matter. "Perhaps the time for another public forum has come," she muses quietly. She carefully pins a copy of the paper to the Library bulletin board.
  5. PROGRESS THROUGH INQUIRY 1st of Snow’s Maiden, Year 136 of the Second Age “Diligence in the face of ignorance.” - Malaurir Lucion Sullas To the Blessed Citizenry of Haelun’or and allies of the Silver State, Since time immemorial, we have sought progress through an endless pursuit of knowledge. To achieve this progress, we peer into the unknown; historically, we have done so through our engagement in proper research. The flame of curiosity is one that must be ceaselessly tended to – now, just as always, we must rekindle our fervor for discovery and scholarship. In hopes of reigniting the flame of progress, Malaurir Silvos Sythaerin shall host three courses on the proper conduct of Independent Research. At the conclusion of this course, students will choose a topic of interest and construct their first theses. We hope to inspire attendees to find at least one topic to fully dedicate themselves to by the course's end. The course will be structured thusly: I. Fundamental Research Principles The first lesson will lay the groundwork for the rest. It will cover possible fields of study, how to set up a hypothesis, how to keep one’s work orderly, and how to properly document one’s findings. II. Research Safety The second lesson will focus on safety. Malaurir Silvos will share past mistakes that he and his colleagues have been privy to, mistakes that led to dangerous and precarious situations. Based on own his near-fatal past encounters, the Malaurir will impart wisdom on how to avoid these circumstances. III. Demonstration and Thesis Crafting The third lesson will cover a plan for the students' first proper theses. Additionally, a demonstration will be held in the available laboratory space. Those interested will be allowed to partake in a class-wide research project, a project that may be contributed to by all student participants. The first of the three courses shall take place in three elven days within the Basement of the Eternal Library. All citizens of Haelun’or are highly encouraged to attend; all are called to contribute to the advancement of our venerated society. Maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. Signed, Okarir’maehr Celestia Astramaris
  6. A light-haired elfess pins a copy of the paper to the bulletin board in front of the Eternal Library. A neatly written note hangs below it: "I highly recommend this read - elOkarir'maehr."
  7. THE BLOODLINE ARCHIVE Venerable Registers of an Ancient Nation Deep within the bowels of the Eternal Library, a peculiar sight stands erected – an outlier nestled amongst towering shelves of ancient governmental archives. It is an unassuming marble pedestal, the only pedestal in the sacred institution. Dimly lit are its surroundings; the pedestal gleams in comparison, the sole source of light in its shadowy vicinity. Upon this plinth is a tome from time immemorial, so wizened and weathered that it appears to be no less than a millennium old. The cover of this timeworn book has been refurbished with white leather and decorated with an artistic rendering of a mali‘aheral looking out from a stone tower, but its age is undeniable; the first pages nearly crumble as they are turned. No title can be found upon the tome. There is no mistaking what it represents. Next to the book lies an inkwell brimming with black pigment. Within this inkwell sits a quill, singular in its purpose. A simple scan of the book will make this purpose known: thousands of words spanning centuries are chronicled upon its pages, some too worn to read. Each section details a bloodline with its name, family tree, origins, and distinctive traits. But even with hundreds of records spanning a millennium of history, there remains space; near the end of the tome, countless empty pages beckon the coming of new generations. Hark, dear reader, for you are about to set your eyes upon annals most ancient. Upon the first page of the antiquated tome, the following words are elegantly etched in ink, faded and nearly illegible: The Bloodline Archive The written record of pure families within Haelun'or. The purpose of the Mali'aheral is within the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya. Our philosophy stems both from our minds and our blood. Silver elves take heed, for the recording of one's family ensures the continuance of our people's health. Scribe your lineage for all to know, and ensure our prosperity for all of eternity. 8. A young elfess belatedly received the news from her mountaintop home. She was older now; the twinkle in her eye lived on, but she was older nonetheless. "It's a shame," said she, "that we never scheduled that cooking class."
  9. A breeze flows through the Silver City. A certain elfess draws herself up from her desk in her library-top office, where she'd fallen asleep amidst towers of books and papers. Hazily, she examines her surroundings. "Celestia?" The voice of a certain militiaman calls from below. An inexplicable wave of contentment washes over her.
  10. Three Men Make a Tiger Long, long ago, in lands forgotten by time, a beautiful peninsula-kingdom thrived in the Far East. The landscape of this domain harbored magnificent peaks that gave way to lush valleys, narrow coastal plains, and dense forests. Tales of this bygone kingdom drifted like dreams through whispers and murmurs; dreams steeped in history, honor, and tradition. At some point in time, this kingdom was ruled by a great King. This King was renowned throughout all of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Kingdoms for his beauty, strength, and kindness. He was beloved by all of his citizens, and his rule marked an era of peace and stability – but this peace would not last. One day, the King was visited by a distraught messenger from the South. He was bedraggled, disheveled, and frantic; his appearance was unbecoming of someone presenting to the King. But in the King’s patience and grace, he decided to host the man. His unkempt appearance had piqued the King’s interest. “Tell me, young man, what disturbs you so?” The man fell to the ground in a kowtow, tears streaming out of his eyes. “My King, there is a terrible creature roaming our southern lands and terrorizing our citizens. They say it has parts both human and tiger–the beast is devouring our livestock and kidnapping our children!” Upon hearing the man’s story, the King’s advisors roared with laughter. “A human tiger? This is a fantasy born from a madman's imagination.” The King, too, shrugged off the tale as the ravings of a lunatic and sent the messenger away. But four days later, two more men who were just as distraught as the first came to the King, heralding the same news. Now that he had been approached by three different men with the same story, his opinion began to change; he suspected that these men were telling the truth. Against the wishes of his advisors, the King embarked on a trip to the southern lands. “If we leave this dangerous creature to prowl across our lands, it may soon reach the upper cities as well. I will follow the complaints of our people and examine their grievances.” When the King arrived in the afflicted city, the townspeople directed him toward the mountains. “The man-tiger lives there. He comes down at night, terrorizing us and disappearing before we can retaliate.” Again, the King defied the wishes of his attendants and approached the mountain alone. He fully believed in the existence of this beast; his fear of the creature all but consumed him. For three nights and four days, he prowled the area, hoping to catch the man-tiger once and for all. “If I wear the paws of this beast, will I be able to emulate its tracks?” The King wondered. He made some paws with sticks and leaves and fitted them over his feet. “If I wear the stripes of this beast, will I be able to understand its mind?” The King wondered. He painted some jagged black lines over his skin with blackberry juice. “If I act as wild as this beast, will I be able to understand its behavior?” The King wondered. He let down his hair and exchanged his adventuring clothes for foliage. Alas, his efforts yielded no results. On the fourth day, the King descended from the mountain and approached the village, prepared to assure its inhabitants that the man-tiger was a fabrication. But when he arrived at the village, he was met with harrowing shrieks. The townspeople screamed profanities at him, hurling whatever they could grasp in his direction. “You foul creature! What have you done to our King? Did you devour him, too, after he courageously held you off for three weeks?” Three weeks? Foul creature? Bewildered, the King looked down at himself. His hair, which had previously been tied back into a tight topknot, now wildly cascaded down his back, stopping short at his waist. Under his torn clothes, countless jagged black lines ran over and under the crevices of his skin. His nails had grown into claws, and his hands were bruised and rough. His feet had been replaced by two beaten-down makeshift paws. In a state of panic, the King fled back into the mountain. In the following weeks, the King was declared dead, and his young nephew took the throne. The southern town settled back down as the attacks came to a stop, and the man-tiger became nothing more than a horror story to recount during late evening outings. But on some dark nights, when the village children snuck out in secret, they came running back in tears, shakily reporting the existence of a furious, beastly man with stripes across his skin, prowling the perimeter of the village and raking his claws across the ground. 삼인성호 三人成虎 Three men make a tiger.
  11. Somewhere in the south, a young elfess tinkered away in her chambers. Clink. Tick-tick. Clink. The only source of illumination in the dark room was a star-shaped night-light with a smiley-face scribbled onto it in black ink, the resultant shadow casting an ominous silhouette onto her face. Taking a break from her work, she carelessly swiped a missive from the top of her mountainous stack of unread papers. As her eyes scanned over the document, her eyebrows rocketed higher and higher. A deafening silence fell over the room. "Mister Georg sure knows how to write."
