Luca’s father, Mateo Vollaris, was a young, ambitious soldier during the War of the Two Emperors, and fighting on Renatian side proved to be quite an opportunity to gain relative wealth. While not enough to gain a noble title, Mateo managed to earn enough to pursue a medical career. He moved to Sutica, which proved to be a much more welcoming place, where he met Luca’s mother, Cassilda. They were both working hard on helping hurt people after the 1738 disaster.
In 1742 Luca was born, and Cassilda disappeared shortly after. Mateo refused to talk about what happened ever since. Luca was raised in relative wealth, and was expected to become a healer, like his father. Having no other authority figure other than Mateo, he dared not to contradict him, and although he never managed to love the profession, he enjoyed the alchemical studies to his own surprise. Still, he spent most of his free time outside, skulking the alleyways with local troublemakers. He continued his studies, fearing the disappointment of his father. That is, until Mateo was imprisoned for embezzling funds. Proven to be not quite the man he wanted to be seen as, Mateo appeared in Luca’s eyes as just as mortal of a man as any other, and he found himself free to do as he pleased. He took only the barest of necessities and went out in search of a new life far away from sullied reputation and childhood memories.
