riddle me this batman. what do pvpers provide to the server?

@Borin PVP itself isn't bad, and never has been; this said, the people who abuse PVP to further their aims tend to lose the narrative. More often than not PVP focused cliques grift faction to faction purely so they can get a good fight or to fight people they dislike OOC. I have found that a lot of PVP mentality is very OOC, and that a good portion of the "RP" is just bunny-hopping around. Then again, I haven't been in or led a pvp faction for over a year now so my take may be outdated.
Rampant alting killed the quality conflict a lot of these comments preach. The great battles and events in LOTC history were not pushed by PVPers. The Rise and Fall of the Johannians was RP oriented, and not goon chaos. Guard Forces were rarely PVP focused, as they were meant to keep order in a city- all because they PVP'd raiders did not mean that they prioritized it. Goons were always just muscle. I miss vassal culture...

@Islamadon Oh yeah I completely recognise that pvp goonery and alting is an unpleasant aspect - bad eggs and behaviours in both pvper and rper factons. But some who seriously don't want pvp at all on the server are utterly bonkers.
On guard forces, end of the day PVP and the threat of war (which is possible only with PVP) are what give them stakes. It should never be a priority all the time, but esp. now that war is actually a thing (unlike at the end of Arcas in which it completely perished in ability to do anything due to technical and rule limitations), and war can have big implications for a nation (see the Dwarf-Oren war, and the civil war in its aftermath), there are real stakes. You don't have these sort of stakes without it, which is my point - If some folk got what they wanted and pvp was abolished, war would basically be impossible, and you'd have the sort of stagnancy that damaged Oren etc in Arcas and the beginning of Almaris, unless of course staff decided that their events should be able to snap nations out of existance or smthn to that effect (you get the idea). This view is based on my personal experience of joining the server, joining the Duchy of Adria (the village in Oren opposite Lorraine, under you-know-who), doing guard RP, and staying bc of the excitement of having stakes of fighting against Lorrainians who were banditing and raiding, etc. I think the stakes that the conflict pvp enables, and the impact this has, far outweigh the damage of excessive pvp goonery.
(Also, you visited Acre yet? :D)

@shartings I completely agree, but in all honesty I think that has very little to do with 'pvp mindset.' There are, unfortunately, just as many people that powergame excessively in CRP for the same reason. It's an overall flaw in the server.

this Dwarven spectacle is the sole reason why enforced PKs need to be a thing for political entities
-
The standards of VA's now... There's honestly no point getting one with the amount of bloody effort you need for the chance to actually rp your character...

Who wants a vamp character, they won't get shelved so everyone who wants one will get one. Just reply to this status to get infected ~~

give me reasons why current human rp is better than the empire rp

i have finally realised what the problem with the current gen of lotc pvp is. It’s not used as a genuine method of resolution it is instead used to avoid consequences you could otherwise not rp’ly.

its also cancer to avoid dying in a situation where you’re guaranteed to by calling pvp and running on CD
i am not against pvp i think its a great thing in most scenarios to resolve conflict. Though my biggest thing is people using it to escape situations or kill-blows. Any moment something goes sour for them, they call pvp and just sprint off and abuse mechanics to escape a situation that would otherwise be impossible to RP’ly.
trust me im fine for clicking and ****, just outta here with this coward avoidance pvp mentality

This is, from what I’ve noticed, the real issue at hand: A power fantasy problem among a large percent of RP communities.
Edited by Alastorous-
I’ve been RPing for 7+ years now, and I’ve seen a lot of different ways to handle combat and RP. Here are my thoughts.
Everyone wants their character to be the “main character” who always comes out on top. With this said, when two (or more) characters run into a conflict with one another, engaging in CRP boils down to emoting in such a way that restricts the opponent to react according to how the initial emoter wants. Over the time of the hypothetical CRP, all parties involved become agitated and/or begin trying to justify why their character should win a certain engagement against the opposing player(s). This often goes on and on, and sometimes involves flaming in OOC chat until someone either gives in or calls for a mod. All because there is no current system to alleviate the power fantasy a lot of players struggle with (though they don’t realize it).
Whereas, with PvP, by using in-game mechanics, there is little to no debate who can and should win an engagement. However, with PvP being the go-to method for a lot of conflicts, it truly takes away from any detailed story telling. Some of the greatest stories include the details of combat, in my opinion.
How should/could this be “fixed”? Well, one of the best RP based combat systems I’ve seen on another Minecraft RP server involved dice. Players had a set number of health points when they initiated combat with an opposing player. Following this, each player rolled a 1d20 for initiative. Furthermore, each player took turns attacking/defending based on the initiative rolls. Players would then roll for attack and defense, all with another 1d20 each. The player with the highest number has their combat emote (defending or attacking) conquer the opposing emote (again, attacking or defending). So on and so forth until player surrenders or dies in RP.
The only additional thing which would be required is an in-depth guide on how to calculate damage dealt through this type of combat system. A topic I don’t think I’m qualified to touch on. Balancing something like this would be fairly difficult, but possible nonetheless.
However, due to the RNG nature of this system, it turns a lot of players off. This is why rankings could be included. The following is a very rough, but easily comprehended example of how these rankings would look and how they would influence rolls:
Peasant 1d20+0
Knight 1d20+2
Ascended 1d20+9
Achieving newer, higher ranks could be done through appointment based, RP “classes” with a team of moderators who take it upon themselves to double as in-character trainers. Whether or not a player gets to “rank up” is determined by the mod/trainer after an RP session that tests the players RP etiquette, skill, etc. Additionally, with every “rank up” reaps its own rewards and benefits i.e. bonuses to dice rolls and potential for increased health at higher ranks.
Likewise, there is no perfect system for how to deal with CRP, but if the goal is to incorporate more RP based combat into the server, a system must be put into place to help eliminate players from overextending their character’s power. I realize that what I’ve explained may not appeal to a vast majority of this community, but I figured I had something to say about the topic.

so we can’t have shitty flintlocks but we’re allowed giant bear companions that teleport to people

It really shits me when people use alchemists fire in RP, just going to put that out there.

The way I used to roleplay it back in Anthos, when I had an alchemist character, the only reason you'd have alchemist fire is when you *plan* to use it for something. Plan meaning you have IC intent beforehand with OOC acknowledgement beforehand that you're going to use it, not just spawn it out of nowhere and give IC reason to. It's fairly volatile and has only worked as planned about once out of three times for me. The other two times they either blew up in the rolls it took-

@Jaeden got removed from management for disagreeing with Caleb's direction with the event team he wishes to push. When he has absolutely no experience with it, so me and Xarkly got hit with the removal of management.
Then I said some very nice words to people in staff discord and got booted because apparently what I said to tofu was too upsetting ?
all while flam basically denied all involvement of projects I started while his inactive ass kept on dragging the team down. But flams the best story admin ever and totally hasn't fucked the ST by giving them months of extra work with the lore games by having it ran so poorly.

looking to sell my soul for event ideas I am currently brain-dead
-
new character ideas, go go go go. Need a group to get involved with

imagine using your GM pex to power-game and kill someone when they're offline :^ )
-
funny take but the division of conflict RPer v slice of lifer is more of a representation of people who see this place solely as a game to win against those who see this as a place to create a narrative
-
the biggest racket on lotc is the skinning community. how u going to let someone charge you a mid-range game for a pixel skin.
-
Can't believe the removal of some of the biggest anti RP shitters that have been on the server in years is met with people begging for the administration to step down.
happy I'm not admin or I would've crucified these people and made it permanent
-
might go join raine now, since of Oren's raevir influence.
-
remove monks and enforce pk's fam, best way to go

I feel quite sorry for the orcs that are watching this absolute dark age of their quality and RP. This is just a 'burkester' phase it'll be restored to greatness eventually

breaking news – PvE in events is catered to those that have the attention span of a goldfish and should be thrown aside

‘whilst still working and making events that cater to and uplift the community.’
Great work there.
-
Big agree, just requires some actual thought to plan those out. Wouldn't trust any of the server to be able to make something that's coherent and enjoyable for PvE currently that isn't just glorified slugfests

transition map is a write off don't think it's reflective of how anything will be
lowkey the smart idea is to use this as a three day break

I'm honestly moreso dissapointed than anything. Expected an RP transitional map like we had last map change, not a testing ground for a plugin that shouldn't have been pushed out like this.
Hope this is used for actual feedback so that we'll get a proper version of Vortex later into the new map as it should still be a promisin plugin

High Elf or Elven smith/quartermaster... Halp me with decision for 3.0 character
