    A discussion on Nations

    Anyway, what do you folks think a nation is or should be? A large faction on the server which owns a prominent city and has its own customs/culture and interacts with other nations. Why? If you lack a city, lack a culture, and refuse to interact with others, what separates you from a free-build village? Is this a viewpoint from a narrative standard or is this something more mechanically involved? Mechanical primarily with Narrative. Mechanically, nations should be for factions which build up the greater server story by interacting with one another. Narratively it makes no sense that a village with no ties would be considered a nation. Do you feel this viewpoint is sustainable? Yes if you want to be a Nation show competence and a willingness to contribute to the overall server. Does it produce considerable role-play that is both dynamic and engaging? By definition having Nations interact with one another creates dynamic and engaging rp. How can it be improved? Don’t give nationhood to factions who don’t want to play with the rest of the server. This goes for any faction that sits and deliberately hides. If people hate them and want to forcibly conquer, there must be a reason for that opinion. How much land do you feel a nation should be able to control? However much they can maintain without going inactive. This can vary depending on map size. I would say if you’re able to expand and not be contested, you should be permitted that expansion. Why? Manifest destiny. Using Aesterwald as an example, we were isolated in the North-West corner of the map. As such, we were able to maintain control over it because no other faction contested it. And, when they did, borders were redefined and Aesterwald crumbled. When a nation expands or declares war on another, to what degree do you feel it should be able to effect the other nation? Depends on the reasoning for warfare and actions during said war. If war is declared over a slight, little effect long-term should be applied. If a nation continuously raids and acts stupidly and is warred they should feel the full wrath of a faction. That said, weaker nations who do little to provoke action against them shouldn’t use ooc barriers such as rules to basically ignore the war that happened onto them. I would say, for instance, if the Imperium decided to declare war on Velia because Velia insulted the Emperor, naturally there shouldn’t be full blown conquest. However, that does not mean that Velia should not fear the repercussions of war. Victors should be able to dictate terms for small issues on affairs but not yoink land. Failure to follow terms could lead to total conquest.

    The problem with the Empire

    The fact that people consider the faith to be Catholic copypasta shows how uninformed they are. I thought the same before joining the church and I realized it had in depth lore and customs that are based around RP concepts. All because there’s a Pontiff and the structure is the same doesn’t make it catholic if the lore is different. It’s like saying a Kingdom is a French-copypasta. As for the Empire, its ingrained into human culture now. That is our culture, making an Empire. Everyone strives to be the next Emperor. I ask you, Mattyz: How did human activity fare with separate kingdoms? Was there an actual push for human lore and development? No. Refer to Imibee’s Curon and Cruz’s Haense. I would argue that there was no cultural incentive as the main goal was to kill fellow humans in resistance to Renatian aggression and syphon rp. When humanity is split people literally dissolve their morality and rp culture in order to acquire more peasants to fill their army so that they can fight wars. The Empire provides the stability where that doesn’t have to be the case. The only one preventing interesting RP in the Empire are people who moan oocly and don’t want dynacism. It’s not the Empire’s fault people are ******* and don’t try instigating conflict or new ideals. RP actions have RP consequence, and it should be expected that wierd customs would be considered haram IRP since there’s already a developed human culture.

    Wow its almost like societies on SEPARATE CONTINENTS had difficulties interacting with one another, you just blew my mind. It’s not like there weren’t trade routes to China via proxies established for centuries in which philosophies religion etc. spread about through the Indian Ocean Routes, the Camel Routes, and the Silk Road. I mean, hell dude, you really got me when the entire reason we sent expeditions Westwards in the late 15th century were to find more efficient routes without relying on the Muslim world. But WATCH OUT NEIGHBORING MONGOLIANS CONQUERED THEM FOR A BIT AND PUSHED INTO MEDIEVAL EASTERN EUROPE AND THE ARABIAN WORLD TOO BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOLY ****.

    To conclude I think I’ll take you up on that suggestion to draft something; however I don’t think that keeping people entertained is necessarily justification for nationhood. When the Westerlands first started as a colony we were isolationist and did events which kept us entertained. After the Empire fell though we interacted with people and made treaties despite the fact that it was rather clear that ppl wanted to stay isolationist. Its ultimately the reason I left because I thought isolationism was boring yet we still talked with powers, if that makes sense.

    Logs have shown me denouncing Camel Bandit ooc tactics, so this is a pointless point. You don’t need to raise a finger against another country militarily to interact with the community. I don’t see how people not wanting evil in their city applies but Im not against there being spook cities I guess I found Devirad rather interesting.

    I can see your logic now but still the way I see it is that Nations should exist to promote the server and I see 100% isolationalism as the server giving protected plots of land to people who don’t want to play with the rest of the server. Otherwise, I agree.

    There is no way to logically fix the alting problem because there’s nothing inherently wrong with it imo if you wanted to make a bandit char and go raiding. That’s why my suggestion was keep the barriers for conflict BUT have it so that if you want to clench onto your nationhood you should be doing more than sitting in the wild. At that point, what differentiates yourself from other freebuilds? Nations should be doing something, anything, that makes their presence known on the server. If you completely removed nationhood and put Curon and Fenn right next to eachother and Curon was freed from the Empire why should Fenn get better treatment than a freebuild when Curon actively engages with people? The same could go for Sutica or Warhawkes. This way, if people want nationhood they should be held to the standard of a nation. And, from this standard, conflict or lackthereof may arise. If Fenn wanted to remain isolationist why not just legitimately act like Switzerland and make trade deals etc. that would benefit the entire server’s activity? Switzerland doesn’t lock its doors nor are they 100% protected. The difference is, they don’t do anything to anger anyone. Holm is the best example of this – They tend to be neutral yet still have a presence. Even Velia interacts with people. You proved that a couple days ago.
