  2. As a group of Mali'aheral continued to work away at a heap of debris, the unstable sapphire mine they stood in would rumble, pieces of the cavern walls and ceiling crumbling down as they chipped off pieces of the bottom. “Is it falling there, too?” “It is!” “Ve can’t leave him!” Hræthån growled, “If we continue to mine, we’re all going to die, including him!” “Just — go!” Elarhil Sullas gave the muffled cry out, agonizing to be witness to, “The death of one Mali’aheral is better than three.” “The death of none is best!” Soris shuffled towards the stairway, peering toward the water. “We could go higher, is there another place we can get him out?” Questioned Okarir’tir Edgars An’asul. The stairs shook as the structure of the cave was compromised. From above, rocks began to cascade. "Please!" Elarhil pleaded, curling up besides the pirate skeleton that rest in his otherwise solitary hollow, as sand and water flooded in. Hræthån grumbled in anger, "SHIT!" He roared as he begun to hammer as quick as he could at the sandstone. Soris snapped her attention to the ceiling, dropping the shovel as she brought both hands to her helmet, holding the sides, "Shit, shit." She cursed, before turning towards the others. Hræthån grasped then that he would have to take a different approach. He turned to Edgars and Soris, "We have to get out NOW!" He shouted, "We can come back later, when it's safer!" Wide-eyed with alarm, Elarhil nestled further, "Ti, Hræthån! Please GO! You'll kill all of us!" He choked. "Alright, time to go!" Ordered Edgars. “ito kae Dio mya’leh!” Three of them made it to the surface. First spoiler — emotes Second spoiler — screenshots
  3. [!] A yellowed, once wettened and now dried note, flutters — hung up infront of The Night Owl Parlour by an elfess dressed in blue. The ink cursive writing is splodgy and rough in places. It's contents contain indications as to why. It is so very cold, and so very dark, now that my oil lamp has burnt out. The dampness of this tomb I wait in worries me. I notice, in this space where I have lost one sense, that of sight; my other senses feel heightened. A pounding in my head, at times, seems all I can hear. Dreariness too overcomes me. No doubt both caused by my dismal conditions. I try to scheme a way out, but my mind is equally as empty as this cavern, now that no other descendants nor monsters roam it. A man who’s been here far longer, a skeleton pirate makes for OK company, though I long to be able to listen to his life tales. Please, rescue me, expeditiously. Larihei kae annilereh. ito kae Dio mya’leh.
  4. [!] Leaflets are posted in the marketplace as well as outside the bastille of Karinah’siol. Scout Pamphlet, Vol niut – The Sapphire Mine Issued 9th of Malin’s Welcome, Year 74 of the Second Age Theme Last elven day, a band of brave Mali’thill descended into an abandoned sapphire mine that was discovered North East of the Haelun’orian isle; What awaited, was altogether an unknown. Here are the findings of Okarir’tir Edgars An’asul, Anara Elervathar, Hileia, Stelios Kekemos Hyptos, Valazaer Calith, and myself, Okarir’mali Elarhil Sullas. We could infer that the last descendant visitors to the cave were a crew of pirates. Their forsaken ship docked close by, a code found upon the vessel allowed us to enter the mine after decryption. Maneuvering through the cave formation was in itself a task. The walls ooze a luminous lime green slime, adherent to touch, it has the possibility to entrap an entire Mali. That which blocked our path we singed by handheld torches, allowing us to proceed. While it had been evident descendants had not entered for quite some time prior to us, other creatures inhabit the area still. A colossal coconut crab, disturbed by our presence, put up an arduous defence till the creature could no longer — retreating to a crack in the wall. Curiously, frequent throughout the cave were locked chests, each with further unique codes needed to be opened. One chest, relatively near to the surface, we found had a ship carved onto the top and buttons on every side marked front, back, left and right accordingly. A quick-witted Hileia solved the puzzle, noting the order of the directions mentioned in a journal scrap found on the nearby pirate ship, pressing the buttons on the sides of the chest, bow, stern, port and starboard to open it. Deeper in the mine, as close to the bellows as we could get, we were faced with an enormous web that crawled with spiders. Ideas were thrown around as to how to surpass this. However, we concluded it would be wise to conserve energy, establish a plan and return later. As such, we are returning to the site on The Grand Harvest. Above ground, a rescue party will be stationed on the beach as a precaution — with refreshments, naturally. Take your best adventuring gear; advised is a light source, a weapon, a shield and light food and water rations. 7. [!] Pinned to the Haelun'orian notice board and around the tavern is the following notice. To Change A Name Issued 5th of The Deep Cold, Year 71 of the Second Age Music It is with consideration that a centre of congregation in Karinah’siol, previously named The Magelight Inn, is to be renamed. Members of Elcihi found a rebrand in order, as changes are underway, and additionally to remove association with the former Okarir’mali. It is henceforth to be called The Night Owl Parlour. By Amanda Clark The Golden Owl is the symbol of the Elibar’acal. Azorella Elibar’acal being a figure of note regarding the last Republic of Haelun’or. As the building is under Sullas management, owing to the talonnii’s ancient beliefs of the power of astral bodies, comes the inclusion of ‘Night’. Changes to The Night Owl Parlour are to include removal of the impure smoking lounge and betterments to other rooms within the establishment. One has been confirmed to exist off the coast of our Silver Isle. The octopus is then to be transferred to the fishtank within the restricted Eternal Library. The scouts humbly ask you to join us on this day, as it is too precarious to go alone. This task will contribute towards the Sil Badge for Uhieran! 11. THE PEOPLE WILL IT penned and issued 69 S.A. High Elves of Haelun’or, blessed Citizenry; we gather as one to put forth our collective will. A Petition has been raised, as is Haelun’orian tradition - as is constitutionally recognised as the correct call to action, one I am sure that elMalauriran shall encourage and approve. With no shedding of Silver Blood, unlike those ‘atafenn who proceed through our streets, the Mali’thill people seek to peacefully make their discontent known: such is the way of logic - the way of Silver. It is hoped that those who claim ‘power’ and ‘leadership’ would answer this call, would answer to the pleas of the citizenry they claim to rule [ACA - Limca , by Johann Blais] THE PETITION The people of the Silver State call for the following; I - To remove the Mali’fenn force from the city. No longer shall our oem’iian live in fear each day, no longer shall unarmed citizenry be brutalised upon Silver Streets. The occupation of foreign military forces ends here. II - To hold an election for the Sohaership, the votes being verified and counted by Elmalauriran. As per Haelun’orian tradition, and as per the will of the people, they shall decide their leader. It is the Mali’thill citizenry who provide their consent to be governed, who choose to follow the Sohaer - their leader by teaching. Signed, ~ Celian Fi’inde (A. 12. [!] Missives flit with the wind in Haelun’or, about the bastion, they scatter. Expression of Truth 10th of The First Seed, Year 69 of the Second Age To Ivarielle, we recall your dubbing yourself as the ‘Silver Princess’, an ungracious title. We recall the shameful display, the debate where Sohaer Braxus Ni’leya offered you in a traditional Haelun’orian manner, the chance to challenge him for his position. We recall how you showed up late, supportless, and asked Elsohaer if he was ready to give up his position. He brushed off your inquiry, looking to the dais for the debate to begin, and in a flustered state from the Citadel you fled. We recall the demolition of our walls. The swarm that took to the city to pillage. The lives of our officials being taken. We recall that now outside their homes, your enthusiasts are attacking citizens. They do not wish to participate in discourse, they are irritated by it, since they are not Haelun’orians like you claim. We recall the path of destruction taken to reach today; this you chose over a simple debate. In your latest missive you make many accusations of falsities. It was befittingly titled, for your writings were in fact, a mockery of truth. First and foremost, the Republicans have not fled. They are the citizens that remain in their city that you continue to lay claim to, this much is obvious, or there would not be conflict within it. You are merely trying to paint a picture that you have succeeded in your plot. Moving on to the library. Nobody has lied and persuaded their way inside, you may ask Elokarir’maehr or Tilruir’nealu who are upholding the library, this is a baseless claim. You criticise Varus for sabotaging the locks when that is in fact what you did, barring the citizenry from reaching their homes, along with public buildings such as the Citadel. May you be reminded that the Silver City does allow visitors. Issue stems not from them but the Mali’fenn you invite to murder our relatives. Furthermore, no wounding was warranted. As you admit, citizens were ordered to surrender; surrender to ones without authority within Elcihi’thilln. Yet, rather than retaliating to their mockery with the barbarity they would get back, the highly capable group attempted to walk away calmly. The harassment of citizens to submit, some of whom you did not even know the stance of, is further provoking a schism you say it was to prevent. Malauriran bare witness to all of this. To the council who condone these actions and events; you have lost all jurisdiction. Not because of Haelun’orian’s beliefs, but outside the Fennic plague have been actively ignoring you as they think they now decide what is what in Haelun’or. They pose as if they are Elsillumiran, they do not respond to those councillors working with them, simply they are not in good faith. I ask you each this to ponder - are you with Haelun’or? You may not have known of Ayliana’s plot to ascend Ivarielle, still your words and actions show support for it - perhaps out of love for your lliran? Clear as the water of our silver isle we see that Ivarielle’s actions are not preserving Haelun’orian culture or peoples. Haelun’or, of course, is where these elements are. Ne active role has been taken by her to stop the bloodshed and impurity on the streets, instead, she has justified it. Do you accept a Sohaer who would watch idly as ‘her’ people, the Haelun’orian people, are slaughtered? Lastly, more mention of Ayliana. We all are aware she is a performer, she adores the spotlight, unfortunately she should only be kept out of it. The genuine adherents to Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya see through her words of deceit. Think she is not a deceiver? Take it not from us - but from her. In the missive, ‘The Schemes Of A Dove’, she explicitly details how she manipulated the late Sohaer Idendril Elassidil. Her actions were not in the interests of Haelun’orians. Rather, a self-serving display. Ayliana only cares for recognition, be it negative or positive. As for her claim to the name of ‘The Dove’, there is only one Dove in Haelun’or history, and if she wishes to be the dove so badly may she be caged like one. We, the citizens of Karinah’siol. MAEHR’SAE HIYLUN’EHYA
  13. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the Spirits keep hidden from elves the means of life. Else you would easily do work enough in a day to supply you for a full year even without working; soon would you put away your rudder over the smoke, and the fields worked by bull and sturdy Giraffe would run to waste. But the creator in the anger of his heart hid it, because Malin the crafty deceived him; therefore he planned sorrow and mischief against Mali. He hid fire; that flaming wolf, but that the noble son of creation stole again for Mali from the creator the counselor in a hollow fennel-stalk, so that Neizdark who delights in thunder did not see it. But afterwards The Creator who gathers the clouds said to him in anger: “Son of Creation, first elf. Surpassing all in cunning, you are glad that you have outwitted me and stolen fire, my pet Scathach—a great plague to you yourself and to mortals that shall be. But I will give mali as the price for fire an evil thing in which they may all be glad of heart while they embrace their own destruction. But when he had finished the sheer, hopeless snare, the Father sent glorious Tarnished-Slayer, the swift messenger of the pantheon, to take it to Malin as a gift. And Malin did not think on what Larihei had said to him, bidding him never take a gift of The Pantheon's Father, but to send it back for fear it might prove to be something harmful to mali. But he took the gift, and afterwards, when the evil thing was already his, he understood. For ere this the tribes of mali lived on earth remote and free from ills and hard toil and heavy sicknesses which bring the Fates upon men and mali; for in misery men grow old quickly. But the tarnished woman took off the great lid of the jar with her hands and scattered that 'gift', all these and her thought caused sorrow and mischief to mali and men. Only Hope remained there in an unbreakable home within under the rim of the great pithoi jar, and did not fly out at the door; for ere that, the lid of the jar stopped her, by the will of Aegis-holding Drazkur who gathers the clouds, hie Aegis helding them at bay. But the rest, countless plagues, and impures wander amongst men and elves; for world is full of evils, and the sea is full. Of themselves diseases come upon men continually by day and by night, bringing mischief to mortals silently; for wise Ixli took away speech from them. So is there no way to escape the will of The Father of The Pantheon. Or if you will, I will sum you up another tale well and skillfully—and do you lay it up in your heart,—how the spirits, the gods and mortal elves sprang from one source. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  14. Eternal Library Recommendations 4th of The Deep Cold, Year 68 of the Second Age Open Library For all ‘The M&H: Part 1-3’ by Lucion Sullas A threefold series by Malaurir Lucion Sullas. The accomplished Mali’thill writes in this short series the history of Maehr’sae Hiylun’ehya, its ideals and common misconceptions. I put this at the top as it is most helpful to truly understanding Haelun’orian culture. For the creative ‘Diligent ‘thill’ by Gusten Faeliel A poem of a dutiful Mali’thill. It is a patriotic piece. Such words written inspire great warmth! Restricted Library For oem’ii and messy Mali’aheral ‘Scrubbing Away’ by Sulraell Visaj Whilst not a task many of us take delight in, including the author of this book, cleaning and organisation are of utmost importance to a Mali’thill. An orderly home and surroundings contribute massively to an orderly mind. In this work an Arcasian cleaning expert, also a historical Sohaer, details proper methods and useful tips for cleaning with a satire tone. Tilruir'nealu Elarhil Sullas MAEHR'SAE HIYLUN'EHYA

  16. [!] A leaflet bearing familiar marks measured by the dozens begins to drift through Haelun'or, and is posted about elsewhere in their lands. THE CAPTURE OF A SOHAER The Sohaer of the Silver State of Haelun'or has been captured. For the acts of razing our village of Aaz Hahdrim, pilfering the treasury of the State and delivering it unto Mankind, emplacing the State beneath foreign rule, and allowing the vassal of Ando Alur to grow greater than your capital, we denounce you, SOHAER KOLVAR URADIR and PATRIARCH of the Uradir Talonnii. This nation shall be delivered to the PEOPLE, and their most greatest shall reign supreme -- or your nation shall fail, once and for all. The time of the Diarchy is over. The time of Silver is gone. Your lands grow stagnant, plagued with the dying wastes of a corruption most blighted, a baleful cataclysm wrought of the Void and yet your people wither, unable to do anything but weep. If still you bend the knee to lesser peoples, if still you cast your ire unto ours, your nation will become nothing more than ash and dust to cake the landscape in rubble and ruin. As Amaethea, it will burn. Begin anew, Mali'thill. Your opportunity is now. But yet walk again the same path, and all will be taken forevermore. ~ Hashidiz Al-Drazoth Herald of Azdromoth
  17. - A Mali’thill’s Guide to Courtship - penned by puerir’arche “The traditional Haelun’orian method of courtship is scholarly, anti-degenerate and proper.” Such is the way things ought to be, my dear lliran - yet, in recent times, it seems few of the coming-of-age oem’iian are aware of this traditional procedure. In hopes to absolve us of this detriment, I have taken the time to write out the Guide to Courtship which you now read. In this missive, I shall lay out a step-by-step process which all Mali’thill bachelors and bachelorettes might use to fulfil their duty of courtship, marriage, and reproduction - to continue on our Silver Blood to the next generation of pure Mali’thill. I should hope that it is both comprehensive and utile in nature, providing all the answers one might seek. Read on, my Mali’thill lliran, and learn the secrets of the Traditional High Elven Courtship Procedure. Chapter I - Selecting a Candidate for Courtship The criteria for a suitable Courtship Candidate are as follows: --- I - Candidates must be pure Mali’thill, physically and mentally. II - Candidates must be of the opposite sex in order to reproduce properly. III - Candidates must be over the age of 50, and under the age of 500, with both partners ideally as similar in age as possible to maximise the time in which both will be fertile. IV - Candidates must be able to conceive, or alternatively one is permitted to marry in order to raise an orphan child through guardianship, ensuring the ideal nuclear family model is still met. V - Candidates may either be selected by the individual themselves, should they find a partner that matches their own wit and ideals - the ideal individual to raise children with and to support them in their scholarly endeavours - or a courtship to be arranged by the pairs’ respective guardians, who will have evaluated the two to be an ideal match. It is theorised also by one fine Mali’thill in their recent missive that government-arranged marriages may also come to pass - this is an idea which I stand by in full support, and I truly do look forwards to seeing the fruits beared by perhaps a trial of this concept. VI - Candidates must, obviously, reside within Elcihi: refer to point I. Chapter II - The First Stage of Courtship To avoid any public disturbance in the rare case of an ill-matched pair, the First Stage of Courtship is to be undertaken in a discreet manner. The individual, male or female, who wishes to initiate the courtship will begin by sending anonymous notes, expressing their interest in a courtship and inquiring as to their chosen candidate's current status. Often, these notes are in the form of things such as poems - catching the attention of the candidate by displaying the individual’s intelligence and wit. Whilst praising the beauty of physical purity that their chosen candidate holds is certainly not discouraged, it is also encouraged to give great focus to explaining why the partnership would be productive and beneficial in logical analysis of other merits. If the candidate is not currently fit for courtship - either already engaged, infertile, or perhaps terribly stricken with duties (though courtship should still be pursued when hard at work; it is the duty of our people to continue the legacy of Larihei by producing a next generation) - then the courtship shall end here, a mutual agreement of an end to the possible pairing; another candidate must be chosen instead. If the candidate is indeed interested in courtship, the instigator of such will soon find out through word of mouth or letter in reply. After some small communication, the instigator is to reveal their identity to the chosen candidate. The pair is to meet, to discuss the direction of their courtship, and either agree or disagree to it. At this meeting, the two are likely to bring things such as self-made gifts, family records, and prior works in order to convince the other that they are a suitable match. This is the last true stage wherein a break of courtship would be made, unless something of great misfortune happens prior to the wedding. Once the two have met and confirmed they wish to pursue the courtship further, the pair are officially to be viewed as a courting couple, announcing this to the rest of Elcihi. Chapter III - The Second Stage of Courtship In this stage, the pair should socialise and meet often, though of course no physical fraternisation is to be had. They are instead to dedicate works of art, science or literature to each other, a statement of their loyalty and dedication to the partnership, and proving that their bond enhances their productivity and direction towards the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya rather than being a simple thing of lust. Unless something truly goes awry in a terrible manner - illness or unforeseen troubles - the couple is expected to swiftly begin arranging a date for their marriage, an official proposal made by either partner not long after their courtship is publicly announced. This often includes a gift, not necessarily a Valah-styled ring, but something to signify the engagement. After only a few elven weeks of planning and organising, invitations will be sent to the blessed Citizenry, calling for their lliran to attend the ceremony within the Eternal Library upon the chosen date. Chapter IV - The Marriage Ceremony The procedure for a Mali’thill marriage is as follows: --- I - Firstly, before the ceremony, a Speaker is chosen. This will likely be a parent/guardian of one member of the couple, or a respected figure and friend within Elcihi such as an Okarir. They are to write a speech that shall praise the purity and merit of each member of the couple, and the couple together. II - As the ceremony begins, the two Mali’thill stand on a raised platform within the Library upon either side of the speaker, facing each other. The speaker stands in the centre, just behind, facing the gathered audience. Close friends, family, and well-respected guests of the pair are to sit at the front upon each side of the aisle, with the rest of the Silver Citizenry seated behind or standing at sides of the hall. III - The Speaker will hush the gathered crowd, welcoming them to the ceremony - announcing the current calendar date, and the full names of the pair. They will speak of each in turn, praising their purity and merit individually, before speaking of their compatibility as a couple. IV - Then, the Speaker shall remain silent for a few moments. This silence is not to be addressed by the Speaker or any in the room, however should any object to the marriage, this is their time to speak up. An objection very rarely happens, and it would be considered incredibly rude to speak up at this time. V - Finally, the Speaker shall announce the two as a married couple, stating the Talonnii name the two will take, and repeating the phrase of ‘maehr’sae hiylun’ehya’, and often encouraging them to ‘Go forth, and produce crotchfruit’ - a phrase used to hope for the fertility of the couple and that they might bring forth new Mali’thill oem’iian in soon time. Those gathered are to repeat the blessing of ‘maehr’sae hiylun’ehya’, as is only polite and proper - the official ceremony then concluded. VI - In terms of the taking of Talonnii Name, the individual with the more esteemed family shall grant their Talonnii Name to their partner. This is something that often comes under great discussion by the two families, debated upon at length prior to the ceremony, especially in the case of two very esteemed families. On some occasions, when no answer can be reached, a hyphenated name will be kept - usually only temporarily, as one will be dropped in time when a consensus is reached by the families. VII - After this, gifts shall be presented to both the Couple in congratulations of their marriage, and to the Speaker, thanking them for their wonderful speech. The gathering would often then move to the Silver Tavern or similar such location for fine conversation and celebration. Chapter V - Expectations of Marriage When married, couples hold a great duty to both each other and the Silver State. --- I - Married couples are expected to produce offspring as soon as they might: it is their duty. II - Contraception is, of course, prohibited - it holds no purpose or place, for the only draw towards physical fraternisation ought to be conception, never the lesser urges of lust. III - Infidelity is, of course, prohibited - as before, it holds no place. Even with conception, such a thing is disgraceful. To be disloyal towards your partner is not only an insult to them and yourself, holding no self-control, yet also damages the ideal nuclear family dynamic wherein children can be properly raised by two capable individuals. IV - This success of nuclear child-rearing is why such things as ‘polygamy’ are illegal: even though more children might be produced, the circumstances of their birth and upbringing hold ill effects upon their development. The other reason for this, of course, is the preservation of the Bloodline Archives - we wish for no confusion in tracing back heritage. After all, the Mali’thill seek not to become like Valah royal families of old, and therefore must be quite careful in record-keeping. V - Whilst married, the couple are still expected to dedicate certain scholarly pursuits to each other in continued show of their loyalty - whilst public displays of affection are to be frowned upon as quite improper and degenerate, dedicated acts of scholarship serve to assure the public that all is well with the couple, and that crotchfruit are to be had. Or, if children have already been born, these things show that they are being properly raised with the scholarly pursuits of parents setting a good example to their children. VI - When possible, couples are expected to attend events together, and act in suitable manner - speaking highly of their spouse, discussing the fruitfulness of their marriage and how positive an impact it has made. This sets a good example for the Mali’thill youth in how to act respectfully and properly towards both their fellow ‘thill, and towards their future partners. Mali’thill married couples should always seek to act as beacons of light for their fellow Citizenry and their offspring, setting an example of what all should aspire to. VII - Both parents, not simply one, are expected to be devoted to their children, teaching them, protecting them, and raising them with the correct principles of the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. When a child is born, parents are expected to divert a great deal of their focus towards the upbringing of the oem’ii. It is through this that the next generation of pure Mali’thill might be raised, to continue our work and legacy, to push towards the completion of the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya and the wellbeing of our blessed people. Ahernan for reading, my dear Mali’thill kin - I sincerely hope that this was an educational experience. I would encourage any courting Mali’thill to refer back to this document frequently, ensuring that they comply with the proper, traditional methods of courtship. If any questions are to be had, I wholly encourage my good lliran to send a letter with their points of confusion, and I would be more than glad to give explanation to such. Learn well, good reader, from this impromptu ‘Imperative of Reproduction’, as one supposes it is. And if it is so, lliran, then let us conclude this as tradition dictates. I do beseech you, my fellow Mali'thill; Go forth, and produce crotchfruit ! --- -= maehr’sae hiylun’ehya =-
  18. The Ultimate High Elven Guide of High Elven Knowings! Well, hello there, my good fellow! Welcome to the ULTIMATE GUIDE OF HIGH ELF KNOWINGS! The place where YOU get to read and learn the ways of the long-eared isolationist bigots! I'm sure you have plenty of intriguing questions for Ol' Mithradites! "How do I get into the city?" "Why don't any high elves like my high elf?" "Why are the high elves constantly insulting me?" "Why is this high elven lady batting off my saucey one-liners?" "Why isn't this high elven man going mad for my delightful lady-lumps?" "Why is Kalenz trying to murder me?!" Hush, fine reader! All will be explained in the most detailed, wonderous... ULTIMATE GUIDE OF HIGH ELVEN KNOWINGS! The one you are reading right this second, bucko! So, sit on your buttocks, put on your favourite monocle, pour a glass of your most expensive wine, and read on... PART ONE So, you want to get in the city! For all those not in “the know,” part one is written with all the information you’ll need to both get inside the city, and how to act and look. The other parts are mostly for reference, and if you want to look super-duper cool to any of the older high elves--but it’s not necessary! High elves are suspicious of outsiders at their gates, and even more-so should they not be up to their standards. You see, every high elf has a different idea of whom they allow inside. You have to keep in mind that they, as default, -don't- want you in there, and they will be judging anyone who asks for entry very, very closely. They will most likely probe your character with multiple questions to test your patience, your guile, and your understanding of their culture. However, should you wish to get in, there are different things they look for in visitors. For the non-High Elf. Step 1. Do -not- be impure. An impure is a character who has a high elf feature prominently in their family line. High elves detest this, and will gladly throw innumerable insults at you, and possibly high-speed arrows. This means no half high-elf, no quarter high elf, and no 1/64th high elf. Should you be a crossbreed, or your family has a distinct amount of high elven blood in them, then you will be found out, and likely killed (via insults, or just plain regular stabby-death). Do not think you will be able to hide these impurities with disguises, unless you are an illusionist. Theirs is a culture based upon racial purity, and for more than a century they have been analysing those that come to their gate. They are well-aware of the tell-tale signs. Should impurities be too small to be noticed (theoretically past 1/6 of blood being high-elven) then it is advised that you -do not- tell them. The high elves have access to acid, and they -will- throw you in their acid-pit. Don't say I didn't warn you. Step 2. At the gates. You are automatically at a disadvantage, here. High Elves tend to distrust any and all outsiders, and will most likely say dreadful things to you. The trick to not fail this "test" is DO NOT INSULT THEM BACK. They have heard every slander conceivable directed towards high elves, and shooting one back will just seal your fate of staying cold and lonely outside the gate. Don't expect to come back anytime soon, either. High Elves have long memories, and they will remember those who annoy them. You must remain completely calm, and accept their nastiness. Step 3. Proving your "worth." Before you can get yourself inside, you must prove that you are of sound mind. Speak clearly, thoughtfully, and with detail, and they will look upon you favourably. Speak poorly with foul language, and they might think you an unwashed brute! Outrageous! To make them look upon you more favourably, you should bring them something they like. The high elves, though entirely disinterested in the pursuit of money, tend allow other races inside with a sort of "transactive" method. The visitors give something to the city, and then they can see the city. Should they give something pleasant towards the library, they may enter and see the library. Those that go into the city without giving anything towards it would be considered greedy, and disliked in an equal measure. The most reliable "gifts" for the high elves are books. Specifically ones that contain -knowledge-. Fiction has been known to be approved, but it is rarely encouraged. Though, the high elf at the gate will judge the books quality, and they all, as said before, have differing opinions. Should you manage to pass all these high-elfy requirements, you have a great chance of being allowed inside. However, once again, this entirely depends on who answers the gate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Should you continue to be a "pleasant" guest, and prove useful to the citizenry, they may be given access to a "permit" to enter and leave the city as desired. Those who prove themselves useful might even be rewarded with a small dwelling within the city, which is ultimately the greatest achievement any non-high elf has managed thus-far. But remember--break any of their laws or irritate them enough, and your punishment will likely be harsh, and acid-related. For the High Elf. Step 1. Do -NOT- be Impure Mainly for the same reasons as before. Ironically, for a city made for high elves, non-high elves have an easier time getting inside. Pure mali'aheral, being the superior creatures that they are, obviously hold possible citizenry to a far higher standard. Step 2. Looking the Part Regardless of what I wrote before, it is fairly simple for a pure mali'aheral to get inside, and far easier to gain residence. However, there is a bit of general stuff a new high elf will need to know prior to entrance. You must act the part of a pure high elf, as well as look the part. Allow me to first start with appearance-- This is "saiko the dediest warior." He set his subrace as "high elf." He is undoubtedly not one accepted by the city's residents. But whatever could be wrong with Saiko? 1. His hair is black--an immediate sign of impurity. 2. His eyes are red--another immediate sign of impurity. 3. He drinks blood. 4. He doesn't really look like an elf in general. 5. He... just... well... look at some screenshots. (Many thanks to SerahLove for providing this hilarious late-night event.) Not exactly the kind of guy high elves like. 1. A pure high elf tends to have lighter tones to their hair--often taking the shade of platinum, grey, blond, or white. 2. Eye-colours tend to be within a green-blue spectrum, but in rare cases they may take on shades of purple. In even rarer cases, gold. 3. Ears are often longer than those of dark elves and wood elves. 4. High elves are almost always devoid of piercings or tattoos. 5. Pure high elves never drink blood. Probably. Step 3. Acting the Part If you're just getting into our group as a new high elf, and all the weird customs are throwing you off and confusing you, there are a couple of simple things you need to know to keep yourself head-above-water in high-elf-land. And yes, it's in the form of another numbered list. Stuff a New High Elf Should Know 1. High Elves tend to dislike other races. This does not have to be excessive, snarling hatred, but disdain is encouraged. To avoid being ostracised by this very gossipy and judgemental city, it is advised that characters who -do- appreciate other races keep it to themselves. 2. High elves do not appreciate strangers in their city. Allowing them in on a whim is highly frowned upon. 3. High elves dislike emotional thinking. The race as a whole tends to favour logic and reason over emotion, and publicly displaying it would upset the vast majority of the city. Flirtatious or "ugly" courting will be seen as outrageous and repulsive (There is a guide to proper high elven courting within this post, so keep on reading). 4. Violence upon fellow high elves is highly discouraged. Challenging one to a duel will have you insulted, laughed at, and heritage questioned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I'll be a donkey's shoe-polisher! You've made your way into the city! Congratulations! Now that you're in, you may start wondering why the high elves are such stingey blighters when it comes to letting folks inside! Well, that all comes down to their culture... PART TWO Maehr'sae hiylun-what? The Centre-points The culture of the high elves is based around their society's driving philosophy of maehr'sae hiylun'ehya. This phrase - taken from old books left in the original College of Haelun'or - roughly translate to "The pursuit of wisdom and health" or "progress and health." Progress (Maehr’sae): This refers to the overall development of wisdom the Mali’aheral uphold as their ideal. A fulfilled life should be one filled with knowledge, arts and science. Health (Hiylun): This is about retaining the purity and continued existence of the High Elven breed while ensuring every Mali’aheral can live with dignity (have a proper house, proper clothing, proper education, etc.). It’s highest priority is protecting their own while outlawing any sort of cross breeding within their kin. "Purity" within the culture is defined by how closely a high elf follows the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya, and is arguably split into two forms--mental, and physical purity. Physical purity pertains to the "health (Hiylun)" of the mali'aheral in question. A bloodline untainted by non-high elven influences is essential for any high elf within the city. Great respect is afforded to those with records of their pure lineage dating back the farthest. Physical purity can be foremost sundered by engaging in sexual relationships with non-mali’aheral. Oftentimes this can lead to imprisonment, banishment, death, or (for the luckier ones) social ostrocisation. Other forms of physical impurity that are not punishable by law (but heavily frowned upon by society) are: invasive jewelry, tattoos, dyed hair, and anything else that changes “natural” appearances. Cosmetic items that would enhance/compliment their natural beauty, such as make-up, would be acceptable. Mental purity pertains to a high elf's self-discipline, capacity for illegal/impure desires, and their personal demeanor. Wanton desires that counter the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya would be considered an immediate sign of impurity. Pure high elves that live outside the city and do not follow the philosophy would be considered mentally impure. A desire to engage with multiple sexual partners or "disgusting" relationships would also be considered tabboo, and outrageous. Openly declaring the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya to be incorrect is the ultimate sign of mental impurity, and may or may not lead to incarceration, banishment, punishment, or re-education. Make note of the literal and abstract concepts of “maehr’sae hiylun’ehya” however. Many debates over its interpretation often ensue. But why do they like purity? To the mali’aheral, the health/wisdom of the society and race is of the utmost importance. Like an illness or spout of ignorance, problems within the community need to be repaired to cease its spread. The maehr'sae hiylun'ehya is the expression of what a high elf is, and to have it sundered destroys the meaning behind their existence. In many ways, the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya is much like a religion. That's the stuff you need to understand most of all. Now is the time for the fun stuff! Random cultural things! Critique and Debate Haha! Tricked you! More boring stuff! High elves are a vocal race, and will argue for purpose, or for sport. They are a highly critical people, and will poke holes in ideas, ideals, philosophies, or actions out of curiosity's sake, or for their own amusement. In numerous situations they speak critically without any regard for that person's feelings. Oftentimes this can come off as cruel and cold, but to a high elf, speaking their mind and identifying perceived errors is both natural, and intelligent. Of course, that doesn't stop others from critiquing them back. But why do they do this? High elves raised in their natural, snobby environment are often engaged within debates and arguments from a very young age. They learn that not acknowedging faults is illogical, and being unable to understand them means nothing can be learned. The only way to advance themselves mentally is through the elimination of fault, and is thus an extension of the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya. As a high elf would say, "why should anyone feel insulted by the truth?" This leads us to the final point. Why do they outright insult others? After many, many years of seeing faults repeat themselves continuously despite their identification, frustration and annoyance take hold of a high elf. This frustration, for the sake of this guide, will be just known as "impatience." An impatient high elf has no desire to repeat arguments and critique ad hominem, and will simply be angered when they see things believed to be done incorrectly. Rather than say something rational, they will strike out at the person through words (think of it as smacking them up the back of the person's head). Sometimes, the high elf in question may not even understand how their cruel jabs are different from an insult. They are just the high-elven devolution of critique. Just for a bit of fun, here is an example of the differences between patient and impatient elves. An elven lady marries a human gentleman, and they conceive two children. A (impatient) high elf meets them while on the road, and upon seeing the half-elven children he begins to speak with a callous tone: "You blithering imbecile! It is my hope these half-breeds you spawned were worth the coming century of withering, gnat-like existences. One would suggest you choose wisely upon your next inevitable coupling, but I feel my breath is wasted on a worthless pursuit." Note that the words are undeniably rude. You can tell that the high elf is angry, but still trying to make a point in his words. Distraught, confused, and angry at the pale elf's cruel words, they continued onwards until they met another pale elf (Patient). This one seemed to glare at them emotionlessly, before speaking to the female elf. "Does it worry you?" "What do you mean?” "Do you not worry that you will observe your children and partner die whilst yourself remaining unchanged? Elven lifespans are incompatible with non-elves, and logically they should be avoided. One suggests choosing an elven spouse upon your next coupling." Though it is certainly cold, it's not exactly rude. Merely blunt. The Artistry of Courtship High elves are known to be uptight about stuff involving sex and other perversions, but since there are high elven children, there must be marriages and relationships as well. "But Mithradites!" You ask, whilst tugging at my sleeve. "How does such a pale, scowly creature find love in their life?" Well now! That comes down to what a high elf finds alluring... Stage 1: Choosing your partner A high elf seeks out certain aspects in a possible partner--this being their intelligence, their family heritage, their scholarly works, or their inherent talents. Both male and female high elves can approach the prospect and court a favoured partner without social repercussions (male and female high elves being equal to one-another, after all) Physical attraction is secondary, and those who would seek out partners purely for physical reasons are heavily looked down upon. Though, lets be honest, such an attraction would not be discounted in a high elf's mind, but social prerogative is first and foremost! Public displays of affection, such as hugs, kisses, or overtures of “love” would be looked down upon, and likely only embarrass or insult the one you desire. Stage 2: Garnering his/her Favour To draw a possible partner's attention, you must impress them. This is usually done in the form of scholarly works. Dedicating a large, impressive scientific thesis to your possible partner or perhaps creating a magnificent work of art in their name would be a fine way to appear desirable. Other methods include impressing them with your intellect (quickly deducing complex riddles, debating philosophy in-depth, or discussing scientific/magical works), as well as subtle drops in conversation about your family's long, pure lineage ("This reminds me of my great, great, great grandfather, who lived in a minor enclave of high elves during Aegis..."). Stage 3: Making Intentions Known Now that the desired one has a fairly apt understanding of what you are capable of, you need to actually show that you are, in fact, romantically interested (didn’t think high elves were capable of romance, eh? Fair enough. I wouldn’t either). Being the sort of people who would have grave trouble finding the place or situation to speak about such things, initial overtures of “love” tend to be handled via written correspondence, usually in the form of a poem, and almost always anonymously. Presumably, this is so the emotionally-repressed logicians can accurately judge if their love-interest is interested in love (romance is often a gossip-topic, and the receiver is likely to speak to many citizens about it). It is recommended that poems should flatter the receiver in innumerable ways, along with being as sappy as physically possible. Stage 4: Acting on Intentions Should you be satisfied with your love’s reaction, you may either continue to send poems to have them swoon further, or you can pluck up your courage, and announce to said person (privately, or publicly) that you were the one sending the letters. The rest, then, is up to the two of you. Should you find one-another compatible, marriage is expected of you. Court wisely, mali’aheral. Marriage High elves are creatures of tradition, and since the original revitalization of their culture during Asulon, they have typically held weddings in places of knowledge, usually libraries. This is why you will often find a large, central area within most Mali'aheral libraries for ceremonies to take place. Though there have been attempts to have specific buildings, such as "churches" for this ceremony, it has been so often shot down that very few dare to make the attempt (Far too much religious iconography around purpose-build wedding buildings. Scandalous!). A ceremony would usually be performed like so-- 1. All the pure citizenry of the city (as well as invited outsiders) would gather within the library, and the two to be wed would stand before the crowd. 2. Upon a lectern (usually borrowed from a classroom), a respected and prominent Mali'aheral citizen would address the crowd with a speech, wherein he would praise the purity of the united couple. The position of "speaker" in such an event would be considered an honour. 3. The speaker will remain silent for a short period, where those who believe the marriage to be impure or foul may raise their voice. This act of silence is never spoken of, as it would be rude for the couple to have it addressed directly. 4. The speaker declares them joined. 5. The couple will now receive gifts and adulation from the gathered members. Clothing, Fashion, and Colour High elven clothing tends to be based around symbolism more than for comfort or practicality. Primarily, high elves prefer longer, flowing robes and dresses more than their dark and wood-elven counterparts. A high elf who's personality can be determined simply by examining their apparel would be considered highly fashionable within their society. Items such as non-invasive jewelry and cosmetics that compliment said symbolism are encouraged. Colours of clothing tend to be softer, lighter shades, such as whites, light blues, and golds. Colours in general, however, can take on different general meanings. Purple: Symbolises magic, life (Tanya), and the unknown. Red: Symbolises might, protection (Evarir), and pride. Yellow/Gold: Symbolises wealth, gold (Acal), and prosperity (can also be attributed to curses, but this will be discussed further on). Green: Symbolises harmony, diplomacy, foresight, beauty (Leyun), and affection. Brown: Symbolises art, nurturing, the land (Nor), and festivities. Blue: Symbolises logic, science (Indor), and knowledge, and curiosity. Silver/White: Symbolises purity (Thilln), and the maehr'sae hiylun'ehya. Black: Symbolises guidance, contemplation, and the Maheral (King/Emperor). Note that though these colours hold weight in mali'aheral culture, they will be disregarded outside of it. For example, a wood elf who dresses in all green wouldn't be considered implying they're beautiful. Architecture and Art Art and architecture are considered synonymous for the high elves, thusly their buildings are often designed for beauty rather than practicality. Similarly, architects are more-often referred to as "artists" than anything else. Traditionally, the high elves based their modern architecture on Asulon's ruined Old Haelun'or. Plaster-covered stone and blue roofing-tiles dominated the buildings of the mid/late Asulon period. Due to the lack of space on the high elven island, they favoured towers and buildings that took advantage of vertical space for efficiency's sake. This style became perfected in the designs of Vallel'yuln Aelysea for the city of Lin'evaral--utalising a more naturalistic and curving manner to the original forms. The plastering was left out in the new forms for efficiency's sake, but the iconic blue tiles remained. Items like statues and portraits are rare within the city, as few "conventional" artists exist. Art of that form is down to the individual artist’s preference. Faith and Religion High Elves practice no religion, due to their belief that placing faith in an invisible deity (and as such one that cannot have its motives or intentions explained rationally) would be an illogical thing to do. Believing dogma to be of no use to them or even detrimental to progress and innovation, the word 'religion' itself has a stigma attached to it. However, the extreme adherence High Elves have to their attaining of knowledge and wisdom is of no less intensity than the zeal of those that excessively practice religion. Gold, and Insults It’s a common misconception that high elves dislike gold. However, this is only half-true. Gold being given to another high elf, by a high elf, is a “curse” of sorts, due to “acal” meaning both gold, and curse. A high elf who presents a portion of gold to another is both questioning their purity, as as their ancestry. It is the ultimate of high-elven insults, and should not be used lightly--especially if said purity is confirmed. However, it is not the act of giving gold that makes the gesture an insult. It is the intent behind it. This can be a highly abstract concept, as sometimes mali’aheral will not even know they are being insulted. Furthermore, the gravity of the insult is directly proportional to your own purity and respect within high elven society. A known thief will not injure the sensibilities of the Maheral with his gift of gold. People who are not pure high elves cannot use gold as an insult to pure ones. Why? “I give you gold, thus I question your purity!” “You’re a half-dwarf prostitute. Your insult is invalid when you yourself are not pure.” “Touche.” PART THREE The Personalities, and Demeanor! (Warning! Opinion-onions!) I am of the opinion that an elf past a century in age is incapable of living with any of the younger races for long periods of time. A creature that lives nearly a millenia longer than any others would slowly become wiser, more contemplative, and abstract. To spend time with, say, humans, an elf would quickly become irritated with the ensuing rashness, brashness, and seemingly "infantile" behaviour. They would regard most other races as "children" in comparison, and would treat them as such. This is why it has always irked me a little when I see so many elves living outside of Malinor/Haelun'or. It would be the equivalent of living in a house run by toddlers. But, like I said, just my opinion. Wait, what was I talking about...? Oh right! Personality! The Archetypes When I write "archetypes" I refer to common kinds of personalities within the high elf world. For the sake of argument (and because, heaven knows, this guide isn't long enough already) we shall refer to very prominent forms of the high elven mindset. Disclaimer: I am aware that the following words mean multiple other things, but for the sake of this... whatever this is, just revert to the meanings provided here. Racism: The distinct (often irrational) hatred of races other than your own. Arrogance: Complete belief in your own assertions, and a refusal to listen to other interpretations. Supremacism: The ideal that you own race is superior to all others. Logic/Rationality: The ability and desire to deduce the workings of the world through observable events. Curiosity: A desire to seek out and learn things that are currently unknown to you. Placidity: Being extremely difficult to anger, or pushed to any emotional extreme. Altruism: The desire to help people without want of reward. The Puritan (Ultra-conservative) ~Kalenz~ "Your existence revolts me, filth. Nothing a sharp knife and a healthy dose of acid cannot fix." -Racist -Arrogant -Supremacist The Logician (Moderate) ~Lucion~ "Though your farce of intelligence intrigues me, speaking to you entails no inherent value." -Supremacist -Logic/rationality -Curiosity The Regressor (Liberal) ~Suika~ "When we ourselves have so much cake, why do we not share it with those beyond the walls?" -Curiosity -Placidity -Altruism The Impure (Impure) ~saiko the dediest warior~ "good waters not good when nourishment best come from excellent blood" -Impure -Impure -Impure Remember, these are just examples!. If you want to mix and match (or create some of your own) then you're completely at liberty to! Don't feel pressured to make one exactly like those listed. PART FOUR The Epilogue?! Good gracious and howdy-do! That was one heck of a guide-adventure, huh? I am fairly sure that this is the longest thing have ever written on the forums! Or anywhere! Imagine all the things I could have done in the space of writing this? I could have painted a portrait, found a new hat in Team Fortress 2... ...or played a high elf in the way outlined in this guide! Eh?! C'mon, guys! We're fabulous! We have books, and tea, and wine, and science, and magic! Okay, it isn't for everyone, and you're completely entitled to playing a high elf in the way you prefer and enjoy. 19. Of Freedom and Progress: The Life and Death of the Haelun’orian Republic A Comprehensive Historical Study by Maenor Aildhuin Printed in Karosgrad on the 3rd of the Grand Harvest, 1810 (( Theme Music )) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Painting of Karinah’siol, cca. 1800 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Author’s Note Having lasted for 32 years, and although brief in its existence, the Republic of Haelun’or left distinguishable marks in the history and culture of the Mali’thill. It is this book’s attempt to recollect many of the events that have graced the Republic's short historical time span, lest such a fascinating epoch be forgotten. Despite its falling, the core ideas for its functioning are still adhered to by many. In a sense, while the structural integrity of the Republic ended with the legislation adopted in 1804, it still endures through those few that cling to its ideals of freedom, equality and progress. In many aspects, the Republic is Eternal. I. The Maheral Simply Is _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Artistic rendition of the protest following Maheral Azorella’s assassination, 1768 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To understand the evolution of the Haelun’orian Republic one must first inspect the years prior to its conception. By 1760, the governmental apparatus of the Diarchy was reeking with corruption, nepotism and stagnation. The very structure of this regime, which by this point was almost a century old, was beginning to rot. Then, as now, the High Elves did not possess the right to vote and elect their representatives, all of them being chosen directly by the ruling Silver Council. Simultaneously, the system crushed all dissent with an iron fist and made extensive use of propaganda to control public opinion. But dissatisfaction, over the years, built up within the society nonetheless. And, as it is often the case with oligarchical structures, the leadership utterly failed in recognizing this ever-growing problem. In the late 1760s, the society of Haelun’or would witness an increasing struggle between the Maheral and the Sohaer in attaining dominance over the Silver Council. Attempts were made, in secret, primarily by Sulraell Visaj, the Sohaer, at modifying the law to vest more power into his own position. His ploys would be revealed, however, and the changes reverted. But for about a year, the enmity would continue. It would all culminate with a plot by the Silver Council to assassinate Maheral Azorella Elibar’acal. Thus, Maheral Elibar’acal would find her demise in 1768 when, in the Citadel, one by the name Adeline would be unleashed upon her, the councilors, while in the same room, idly witnessing the fruits of their labor. Chance had it that, at that very same moment, a storm forced much of Lareh’thilln’s population to seek shelter within the Citadel, the place of the assassination. So the murder would be discovered shortly after being carried out as Azorella’s cries of agony drew the attention of all. Naturally, the act triggered massive unrest among the populace. Those councilors involved were arrested soon after and put on trial. But further alienating the populace and in defiance to the people’s will, those Diarchists that remained free sought to downplay the severity of the crime, urging for inhumanely soft punishments for those involved. Acaele Lazul, chosen Maheral after Azorella’s death, failed to remedy the anger of the citizenry. Thus, as the trials went on, a clear schism within the society formed. On one side were the aforementioned Diarchists. On the other were the Maheralists, Mali’thill who believed in the traditional supreme authority of the Maheral, guided by the ancient phrase of the one who led the Mali’thill to their cultural zenith in Anthos, 4 centuries ago, Lucion Sullas: “The Maheral simply is”. In a final act of delusion and desperation, the remaining Diarchists would seek to trial many Maheralists, most notably Ikur Sullas. Arbitrarily, many were called forth by those who still denied the inevitable. Ikur Sullas’ trial never came to be, being postponed, again, arbitrarily. Nonetheless, he climbed the podium still and accused the leadership of corruption, uttering “The Maheral simply is, and Acaele Lazul… you are not”. In that moment, the public collectively agreed that Acaele never was. This moment, in 1771, represents the ending of the Diarchy and the beginning of the Azorella reformation, the transition to the Republic. II. Progress Is the Republic _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Illustration of the first democratic nominations for Sohaership, 1772 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The transition to a democratic republic began shortly after Acaele’s downfall and the subsequent collapse of the Diarchy. In these trying times, order was maintained by the Malauriran Avern’dionne and Kelthran Iyathir, alongside Ikur Sullas, who was chosen Maheral by general consensus in 1772. The chief immediate objective of these three was the organization of elections, the first in a century, and the formation of a government to lead the reformation effort. Thus, it would be them who would oversee the democratic processes of 1772. After what could be considered the fiercest nominations and debates in the Republic’s history, Nelgauth Maehr’tehral, Silvos Sythaerin, Dele Seregon, Kaelan Aldin and Elathion Dagre’sae would emerge victorious, filling the positions of Sohaer, Okarir’maehr, Okarir’hiylun, Okarir’tir and Okarir’nor respectively. In such a fashion, the first democratic government would form. The Republic’s establishment was imminent. It was under the management of this primeval ruling body that the first reforms were drafted to anchor the republican dream in reality. The Republic of Haelun’or would materialize formally in 1774 when the New Constitution of Haelun’or would be adopted. It is ofttimes difficult to realize the importance of the times one lives in thus, while few knew it at the time, as Ikur Sullas and Nelgauth Maehr’tehral announced then the foundation of the Republic, the Descendants were about to experience the height of modern Mali’thill civilization. Upon perusal, the intention of the administration to secure democratic principles is evident. The newly secured piece of legislation guaranteed all High Elven citizens of Haelun’or “the unalienable rights to freedom of expression, to enter the city freely, to association, to attend trials and public councils, to due process under the law, to education and the pursuit of progress, and to housing and food within the City of Haelun’or”. As far as the Mali’thill is concerned, there was no constitution more favorable anywhere in Arcas, at the time. If we are to point out a flaw in this paramount act, it would be the sense of irrelevance it created around the Sohaer through the entrusting of most of the power into the Maheral. It ought come as no surprise, however, considering that the first government of the Republic was composed exclusively of Mali’thill who, in the years prior, formed the forefront of the Maheralist movement. Thus, into the Maheral was vested “supreme executive power [...] over all city affairs, [...] the authority to supervise and veto any legislation passed by the silver council, to pardon any citizen found in violation of Haelun’or law, and to interpret this constitution and declare any current or former legislation unconstitutional”. Generally, such investments of power into one individual facilitate dictatorships and are problematic for a democratic system. But while those concerns would demonstrate legitimate later, the authority of the Maheral proved especially useful in the first years of the Republic, representing a strong defense mechanism against the naturally chaotic shift from a society crushed by oligarchy into a democracy. More fortunate still, the position was, at the time, held by Ikur Sullas, who had the forethought not to employ his supreme decision powers too often, letting the democracy shape itself. But what truly substantiated the democratic nature of the Haelun’orian society was the innovative foundation, by the Constitution, of a new institutional body named the Heial’tuva, the Council of All. Legally, many of the actual democratic processes would stem from that institution: “All High Elven citizens of the age of majority (50) shall be inducted into the Council of All (heial’tuva), and granted the rights to public debate, to vote in public election, and to run in and challenge any elected office”. It is true that, in principle, this pseudo-parliament held no actual governing ability or administrative power. Rather, it derived its importance from the ability of its members to elect and challenge those in power. In any case, even if the steering of the nation was not directly in the hands of the people, but more in the hands of those elected by the people, the establishment of the Heial’tuva represented an important step towards democracy and a great improvement from the previous dictatorship. It would not be long before the fundamentals of the newly-founded Republic would be put to the test. In 1775 Kaelan Aldin would retire, as would Silvos Sythaerin in 1776. The seat of Okarir’tir, then left vacant by Kaelan’s departure, would be filled by Celiasil Uradir. His triumph in the election would come as a surprise to many. At the time, Celiasil was not a member of the Sillumiran, the Silver State’s military, and he was faced with the challenge of defeating two more experienced candidates, more notable among them being Storm Elibar’acal. In any case, Celiasil’s tenure began with much work striving to improve the Weeping Blades’ reputation across the entire continent through careful recruitment and drilling of discipline and competence into an army that, by 1776, was no longer at the apex of its power. Celiasil’s replacement of Kaelan would represent the first change between two democratically elected representatives. Thus, the phrase “Progress is the Republic” was born. On a similar note, not long after, the election for the seat of Okarir’maehr would render Silvyr Uradir victorious. This event would prove to be a more unfortunate part of the Republic’s history. Silvyr would go on to display an absolute lack of vision or ability for the administration of the Haelun’orian educational sector. Under his management, the Eternal Library would fall into disuse, while his delayed reforms and lectures lacking any substance would go on to severely maim the intellectual progress of the High Elves. The full extent of the damage caused by Silvyr’s tenure and the following decade of limited academic achievements would become apparent only many years later, in the Republic’s final days. Then, in times of most urgency, a significant part of the population, lacking proper early enlightenment, would find itself unable to combat the depressingly abundant misinformation. Not only that, but the damage done under Silvyr would be used as a chief source of anti-republican propaganda, and as a primary argument against the Republic by those aiming at its destruction. Around that same time, in 1777, probably as a foreshadowing of what was to befall all the Descendants, multiple malicious entities, by all accounts foreign to Arcas, would assail Lareh’thill and its vicinity. One such instance, more memorable, would be that of a giant worm-like creature. Multiple people, the day of the attack, remarked a certain stillness in the nature all around them, as if all life fled. The creature itself was described as “slimey, disgusting yet incredibly large” with a mouth lined with “rows of twisting teeth, like a sharp vortex that would shred anything to dust”. Despite the beast’s mystique and might, the Sillumiran on duty, led by Celiasil, along with those citizens that offered their aid in the struggle, would go on to valiantly defend the Silver City and its residents, slaying the monster while suffering minimal casualties. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Drawing of chasm in the vicinity of Lareh’thilln _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Those threats would end up duly eliminated and the damage inflicted would be repaired. But the fear instilled by them would endure, and so it would come about that their gravest implications would be on the political stage. In the context of these events, in fear of what other malignant creatures might attack Larihei’s children and with the intent to preserve the life of the Mali’thill, the Silver Council, in 1778, would strike a pseudo-alliance with Azdromoth and its followers, adopting The Pact of the Titan. This piece of legislature would go on to constitute the chief source of contention among the Mali’thill citizens of the Republic. The controversial clauses the document contained, namely “The First Drakaar, Azdromoth, is to be revered within Haelun’or, for it is He and He alone who offers us safety” and “Sons and daughters of The First Drakaar, Azdromoth, Elazdrazi, are to be welcomed into Elcihi and treated with the same respect as our fellow Mali’thill”, understandably alarmed a significant portion of the residents of the Silver State, them viewing the Pact as an affront to purity, as a contract of vassalage. Those in favor of it claimed that it was forged in order to preserve purity. Nonetheless, the Pact, once signed, and despite vocal opposition, still saw public support, primarily fueled by the aforementioned fears of the outside world that, at the time, grew increasingly more grim. What followed was a short period of both internal and external tranquility. In this time that lasted no more than three years, the government attempted to redress the material damage caused by the previous attacks while at the same time to continue the never-ending effort of reformation, improvement and progress. Being a product of the dangerous circumstances of the age as much as of the good intentions of the Silver Council, during this time an ambitious military program was announced by the office of the Okarir’tir with the purpose of educating the general populace in matters of warfare and combat, in case the need to defend the Motherland ever arose again. Around this same period, the medical system of Lareh’thilln, which by now was one of the most modern and efficient healthcare establishments in the continent, would continue to improve under Dele Seregon’s guidance. The first disturbance of this calmness would come in 1781 when the Okarir’nor Elathion Dagre’sae resigned. The election that followed affirmed Effile Ker’vulnir as the new Okarir’nor. At the time there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm concerning these affairs, with many citizens absenting at the time of the debate. Admittedly, the position did carry less relevance to the Mali’thill people than the others, so the general indifference was not surprising. The actual truth regarding those facts would come about shortly after Effile’s victory, when she would prove ineffectual and absent for the entirety of her tenure but, courtesy of the position’s irrelevance, the effects an idle councilor entailed were massively mitigated. One year later, foreign woes would make their return as well, in spite of the pledges made in the Pact of the Titan. In 1782, a band of foreign and, altogether, irrelevant terrorists would abduct and hold hostage the Sohaer, Nelgauth Maehr’tehral. It is a known fact that, in the end, Nelgauth was rescued unharmed, appearing jovial enough at a soiree hosted by his own kin not long after. However, the circumstances of this incident remain somewhat ambiguous and shrouded in mystery. At the time, the government of Haelun’or kept the escapade a secret from the public in order to contain the agitation and possible spread of misinformation. It would only be revealed after Nelgauth’s rescue, and even then nothing too detailed. The means and reasons for the capture of the Sohaer remain up to debate and personal interpretation thus, as no actual statement from the terrorist organization ever surfaced after the incident. To beguile the Sillumiran and whatever Azdrazi were guarding the city at the time suggests a certain cunning planning and to kidnap a state official of Nelgauth’s stature would have opened many possibilities for the culprits, from amassing massive wealth to blackmailing the government into nefarious activities. But, with the incident long resolved, it is probable that the absolute truth of the matter will never be fully understood. As if the previous events were not enough, the year of 1783 would present the first seismic shift on the political stage of the Silver State. This year would be the year of Nelgauth Maehr’tehral’s abdication from the position of Sohaer. The government of Haelun’or, for the first time since the Revolution, became without a steward. Whether this decision was influenced in any way by the individual’s previous aforementioned misfortune remains up to debate. In any case, Nelgauth would go on to linger for some more time in politics in the quality of Maelunir, which was the Maheral’s direct subordinate and chief aide. However, he would cease to take center stage and would grow increasingly more peripheral. It can be speculated that Nelgauth, at the time, was stepping down from that position of power in hopes of training Haelun’or’s next generation of leaders. In discussing Nelgauth’s character, one must note that he would go on to face criticism throughout most of his political career as well as well after that. It was a known fact that the Maehr’theral was incredibly liberal in private and that, throughout much of his career, he was prone to fits of hypocrisy. In many people’s eyes, he has earned the appellation of Mali’ata. Nonetheless, whatever faults the individual possessed, the actual role of Nelgauth in the foundation and further development of the Republic and of the Haelun’orian democracy is uncontestedly paramount. Being one of the authors of the Constitution of 1774, he laid the path not only for the Silver State’s aspiring politicians, but for all those yearning for freedom. It can be safely asserted that, by all standards, Nelgauth’s political career was impressive. In Nelgauth’s place as Sohaer would rise Eredael Rhenaer, a Mali barely above the age of majority with a good academic career. Despite his very young age, he would go on to best in the election Anethra Uradir. For much of his tenure as Sohaer, Eredael would remain somewhere obscurely in the shadow, focusing more on the diplomatic affairs of the state rather than the acceleration of reforms of the interior. But that is by no means an act of discreditment, for Haelun’or’s diplomacy was, at the time, impeccable, as the state itself was on good terms with most of the other nations of the Descendants. That same year of 1783 would bring one more novelty. One by the name of Aiera Sullas would be named Tilruir’indor of the Eternal Library. It would be under her guidance, after a decade of mismanagement, that life would be restored into this most important institution of the Silver State. Three years later, as another triumph of the educational sector, Silvyr would bless the populace with his resignation. In his stead, as Okarir’maehr, that very same Aiera Sullas would ascend. By 1786 she was already conducting treaties with foreign places of knowledge to better the intellectual progress of the nation. Her triumph would go on to represent the turning point in the matter of academics. After a delay of ten years, work towards reforming the Eternal Institutions would finally be made. To continue the stream of political machinations, 1789 would see the first challenge of an Okarir by a regular citizen of the Silver State. That year, Nuala Telperion would accuse the Okarir’nor at the time, Effile Ker’vulnir, of incompetence and idleness. While not entirely wrong, the act would see the disapproval of most of the citizenry, as Nuala was still remembered as a staunch supporter of the Diarchy in its final hours. This known fact caused a short-lived public scandal between her and those that sought to shame her for her past actions. Taking advantage of this general revulsion towards Nuala, one by the name of Zelios Elibar’acal would go on to nominate himself as well, thus an alternative would present itself through him. Effile resigned shortly after the announced candidatures of the two, having enough courage and foresight to step down. In the end, as expected, Zelios would emerge victorious. The Mali did not present a spectacular plan or campaign, nor was he experienced in matters of economy. Yet, courtesy of the stigma associated with the old regime, Nuala still lost. It would not be long before the competency of the government and the resilience of the Mali’thill would be tested again. At the end of 1789, the most severe foreign attack on Haelun’or would commence. Those that witnessed the horrendous battle remarked a most terrible storm unfolding prior to the creatures’ arrival, one characterized by an unusually high quantity of lightning that threatened anyone not sheltered. On that fateful night, four creatures of dark allegiance, called by some “Shadows of Aegis” launched a monstrous assault upon Lareh’thilln, managing even to destroy one of the draconic wards placed by Azdromoth, prompting the Drakaar itself to appear and defend the city. Apparently, the beasts’ primary targets were the buildings of most importance, namely the Citadel, the Eternal College and the Eternal Library. The latter would be the only one to survive the assault. What is more, the assailants imbued within the Eternal College a sort of plague, this too mystical in nature, which would chiefly corrupt books but also the mind of anyone who would thread within the confines of the building. After a long and arduous battle, the city would be saved with Azdromoth’s aid, but the Citadel and the Eternal College would remain defunct for the remainder of the habitation of Arcas. As a further precaution and at Azdromoth’s own advice, the collection of the Eternal Library was moved to Helena, then the capital of the Holy Orenian Empire, which was deemed, then, safer. There the books would remain, courtesy of the alliance between the Empire and the Silver State, until Helena would too be destroyed. The entire continent of Arcas would end up being corrupted in 1795. Then, Lareh’thill would be destroyed, much like all the other cities. The mountain upon which it was built collapsed into a fiery chasm. At the time, fortunately, the evacuation effort was led by Dele Seregon, who managed to rally the citizenry and organize the escape to the Eye of Man, where the Mali’thill sought refuge until the eventual embarkation to Almaris. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Picture of the ruination of Lareh’thilln and the flight of the Mali’thill, 1795 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Arriving on the new continent of Almaris in 1796, the everlasting children of Larihei would settle a fertile island to the far east. There, the High Elves would begin constructing a new home befitting their dreams and traditions. The settlement would be appropriately named Karinah’siol, the Lone Sunrise. It would be this city that would bear witness to the Republic’s final years. They would be as eventful as they would be tragic. Only a year after the Mali’thill’s settling on the island, Dele Seregon would announce her resignation as Okarir’hiylun and the eventual retirement from politics. Thus ended the career of the longest serving Okarir in the Republic’s history, maintaining her function for 25 years of the Republic’s 32 years of existence. It was under her management that the medical sector of Haelun’or grew to be one of the most respectable establishments in the World. The health of the citizenry was, throughout all these years, despite all the challenges, preserved and improved. It was also her achievement the adoption of legislation that sought to improve the experience of the less fortunate of Haelun’or’s citizens through the Citizenship Act of 1782, which bettered the condition of second class citizens, or the Orphanage Act, whose objectives were the protection and education of Mali’thill orphans. She, too, would be subjected to much criticism, however. It can be argued that the Seregon besmirched her purity by quasi-worshipping Azdromoth, an act which she would admit doing. But, it would also be maintained that she did so to protect one of her kin, which was a Paladin of Xan. More fortunately, Dele Seregon would go on to be one of the main critics of the Pact of the Titan and of the Azdrazi, bringing many arguments and much evidence about their violent nature. Regardless, much like Nelgauth Maehr’tehral’s case, Nelgauth who officially retired around the same time, Dele Seregon’s role in the progress of the Republic is undeniable, contributing greatly to all its triumphs and glories. It would be Maeve Elibar’acal who would rise in Dele’s stead, continuing the policies of her predecessor with much ability. An accomplished doctor, to this day, the “Curriculum of Hiylun”, written by Maeve Elibar’acal and her staff, remains the most comprehensive guide in the study of medicine. It would be under her, as well, that medicine classes would formally begin, in a most fruitful partnership with the office of the Okarir’maehr. Still in 1797, an issue that has haunted the Haelun’orian Republic for decades was starting to receive more and more attention. With the settlement of the new continent, the Inferi threat and the corruption of Arcas that instilled fear in the Mali’thill were gone. It was in this context that more and more citizens of the Silver State began questioning the necessity of the Pact of the Titan. By then, the document was continuously losing public support, as many Mali’thill committed the horrific act of turning into Azdrazi, receiving absolutely no punishment for forsaking their purity. Notable among those unguided were Silvyr and Celiasil Uradir, though the latter would end up not fully turning. The number of people calling for the Pact’s nullification was increasing. Perhaps the most unfortunate fact to come out of this situation was Maheral Ikur Sullas’ reluctance to abandon the alliance with Azdromoth, being constrained to use his decisive powers as Maheral to ensure its survival. There have been multiple occasions where Ikur’s distaste for lessers, Azdromoth and the Azdrazi being just that, was obvious. And so, the actual reasons the Maheral then had at maintaining the Pact remain unclear. It would seem that, mayhaps, the Sullas was overly cautious, perhaps fearing Azdromoth’s possible retaliation. Of course, such a fear would have been legitimate, considering that Drakaars like Azdromoth are ill-tempered, corrupt creatures constantly lusting for power. Whatever the reasons, this sad decision of Ikur would serve as yet another subject of propaganda, later, in the effort to destroy the Republic. On this background, the following year would see Celiasil’s resignation. As previously mentioned, at the time, Celiasil was looking to turn into an Azdrazi. This fact alone was the source of much discontent, which only grew after he received the Maheral’s approval in retaining the Okarir’tir position. The Republic was on the brink of having an Okarir not of the Mali’thill race. But it did not come to that, as Celiasil had the wisdom to retire, ending thus a career which lasted for 23 years. He was responsible for the modernization and instruction of the Sillumiran, vastly increasing the quality of the Republic’s military. It would also be him who would lead the Weeping Blades in the Descendants’ struggle against the Inferi. The army of the Mali’thill would go on to valiantly aid their distant cousins in the Siege of Aegrothond and later fight in the battles for the liberation of Korvassa. Observably, the Sillumiran then not only served as a military force, but also as a diplomatic envoy, earning the Silver State much prestige and admiration throughout the conflict. III. Regarding the State of the Republic _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [!] Sunset as observed from a beach near Karinah’siol, cca. 1803 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Republic was a dream. A dream that fell. It seems fitting that we shall now begin to delve into the chain of events that led to the downfall of the democratic system, the system that allowed the intellectual prowess of the Mali’thill to express itself, by first reminiscing what could be considered the last moment characteristic of its nature, the Okarir'tir debate. After Celiasil’s resignation, in 1799 the election for the Okarir’tir position commenced. The nomination and debate were one of the fiercest in the Republic’s history, their vitality being outmatched only by those at the Republic’s birth, back in 1772. And, despite the efforts of the moderators in place, the main discussion that concerned the citizenry then was the views of the candidates in regards to the state of the Pact. In fact, so adamant were the citizens that, after the official debate was over, they organized another, unofficial, but which lasted more than the former. Of all the three candidates, Ellisar Aevaris would be the one to show the least ardor concerning the abolishment of the alliance. Nonetheless, he would still emerge victorious. At the time, his triumph was certainly a surprise to many, considering that his opinions aligned with those of the masses the least. One possibility for his triumph is that the other two candidates, Valorin Celia’thilln and Olrin Hildinyr, in presenting similar stances on many issues, divided their own electorate, halving their votes and cancelling each other out. For better or worse, after a memorable round of elections, Ellisar would become Okarir’tir. Nobody anticipated it at the time, but these elections would go on to be the last with a formal debate between candidates. Despite all this, the state of the interior seemed to be improving. Nobody in the government threatened to turn into something else. That, coupled with the announcement of the formal opening of the Eternal Institutions and the soon arrival of the Eternal Library’s collection, instilled much optimism about the future in the populace. But that was not to last, and the worst was yet to come, though in means so subtle few recognized the danger. In 1801, the heaviest blow to the Haelun’orian Republic would present itself in the unexpected retirement of the Maheral Ikur Sullas. Considering the Maheral’s actions not long before, rashly, many, the author of this book included, viewed Ikur’s resignation as a step forward. But in retrospect, one must admire just with how much ability he led the Mali’thill in these strange times, for democracy was not something many of them ever experienced before. The details surrounding the motives for his departure from the position of leadership matter not. Personal reasons, increasing opposition, those aspects are irrelevant. What is of concern is that he would be the last of the founders of the Republic to leave from the administration of the nation. One cannot think of the Haelun’orian Republic without picturing Ikur Sullas at the same time, they are very much connected. It was he who supervised the system’s development and progress for 29 years. After his retirement, the Republic would only endure for 3 more years. It remains uncertain whether or not the Republic would have fallen had Ikur remained in charge for a little while longer, but mayhaps that counts as a blessing, if not to the Mali’thill, then at least to the former Maheral. After all, the Republic was very much his progeny. It would have been a terrible thing to witness its fall from a position of power. In Ikur’s stead would be invested one by the name of Galanthil Elibar’acal. Most certainly a peculiar choice as Galanthil, having retired long before, was unknown to many. Presumably, this one’s naming was only temporary until a proper successor could have been found. But, rather unfortunately, it would not come to that as a new scandal would arise. Not long after this announcement, the Sohaer Eredael Rhenaer would, rather controversially, challenge Galanthil and name himself Maheral. Despite the boldness of the act, Eredael enjoyed a fair share of public support, thus prompting the Malauriran to convene. In order to prevent a power struggle and an actual schism, a council of Malauriran met and decreed Galanthil’s rise null and void, asserting Eredael in the position instead. It can safely be asserted that from this point on, the Republic’s demise was inevitable. The years that followed would see an ever increasing disregard for the Constitution, the Silver Laws and the customs of the Mali’thill. The year 1801 would see the publication of a document entitled “Regarding the State of the Republic”, signed unanimously by the members of the Silver Council, chief among them Eredael. In it, the primary objectives of the administration were written down: the consolidation of maehr’sae hiylun’ehya, the structural modernization of the Republic, the advancement of meritocracy, the advancement of new educational policies, the formal opening of San’evarir, the renewal of the Heial’tuva and renewed debate around the Azdrazi issue. In this fashion, Eredael managed to gather more support. In a similar mode, soon after, a grand debate concerning the Pact of the Titan was held. Rather expectedly, the matter was settled decisively in favor of abolishing it. Support for Eredael increased still. Now concerning a more depressing matter, in light of the apparent chaotic transition caused by Eredael’s challenge of Galanthil, a great number of inconspicuous individuals began migrating to the Silver State. Many of them never set foot in the Republic before and many of them belonged to families with ties to the Diarchy, like Laraethryn and Valarieth. Their distant stance to the democratic system was evident. It would be one belonging to this group of people, Arelyn Iyathir, that would be elected Sohaer. Securing victory over Nuala Telperion, she would be the first such elected representative without being subjected to a formal debate. Arelyn would set a trend for all the Haelun’orian politicians that followed. From this point on, propaganda aimed at the discrediting of the Republic and its founders began. Arelyn, in her campaign, dared not directly attack the Republic, but still commented on the “liberalism that has poisoned our people” or the “impurity that lurks in the shadows”. As it is often the case with such aggressive populistic speeches, she offered no solutions and pointed to no particular problem, making use only of carefully constructed ambiguous accusatory phrases. Following Arelyn’s ascension, the propaganda would only grow in intensity. Simultaneously, a wave of resignations and departures would occur, primarily from those still loyal to the Republic and the progress of the Mali’thill. It began with Ellisar Aevaris, the Okarir’tir, followed by Maeve Elibar’acal, the Okarir’hiylun, and all her entourage. Not long after, Dele Seregon would announce her departure as well. 1804 would see the leave of Aiera Sullas and her staff. None of their successors would declare themselves in favor of democracy. The greatest schism in recent Haelun’orian history would thus form. As of the time this book was written, the schism still continues. 1803 would see the first flagrant disregards of the Constitution as the offices of Medi’iran and Okarir’san were reinstated without amending the Constitution first. The intents of the new establishment to ruin the Republic and write a new constitution were evident. Sometime later, Eredael would invest Caledor Laraethryn in the position of Okarir’san without an actual election. Caledor would have gone down in history as the first unelected member of the Silver Council since the fall of the Diarchy, were it not for the Malauriran who intervened. In a last effort to save the Republic, the former leaders of Haelun’or would urge for elections, and they would eventually be held. The reality was, however, that it has been more than a year since propaganda began, most of the opposition already fled and the majority of the electorate was composed of individuals with a distaste for democracy. Caledor would win. By 1804 there was virtually no opposition left in the government and works were undergoing towards formally ending the Republic. The last legal bastion of defense was represented by Aiera Sullas who resigned that very same year. The downfall of the system by now was only a matter of time. It remains uncertain how long Aiera Sullas would have managed to delay this inescapable future. However, by analysing the behavior of the councilors at the time, it seems very likely that, had Aiera resisted for much longer, she would have shared Azorella’s fate. It thus came to be that on the 5th of Snow's Maiden, 1804, a new constitution was adopted. The Heial’tuva was abolished, ending the ability of the populace to elect and challenge representatives. All relevant power was taken away from the Maheral and centralized under the Sohaer, who would thenceforth have the ability to appoint and dismiss all councilors. From that moment on, freedom of expression would cease to constitute a constitutional right. Thus, in 1804, despite the initial promises made, Eredael would consent to the formal ending of the Republic he so diligently swore to protect. The rule of the people was at an end and the oligarchy would make its return. If we are to compare the Diarchy’s final hours with those of the Republic, we would notice striking similarities between the move attempted by Sulraell Visaj in 1767 and the legislative changes brought forth by Arelyn. Through means more direct and propaganda more efficient, Iyathir succeeded where Visaj failed, securing the Sohaer’s dominance over the entirety of the Silver Council. Sometimes, the apparent symmetry between historical events is truly astonishing. And so ends the three decades long drama of the Haelun’orian Republic. Its effects and the tragedy of its demise would go on to impact the Mali’thill forever. It would bring forth the existential question of what exactly means to be a Mali’thill. But more than anything else, the fall of the Republic would reveal that even we are fallible and that there is much to learn still. maehr’sae hiylun’ehya.
  20. On the Qualities of Lessers: Proto-Elves and Other Subversive Myths It is a well known feature among the lesser races of our world that they crave to be like us. It is the reason why humans powder their skin and adorn their bodies with fragrance. The reason why Dwarves revere silver hair and beards as symbols of wisdom and respect. The reason why our fellow Elves crave our light and fair skin and eyes, pursuing the arts of alchemy to change and adjust their visage into a mirror of purity. So it is that envy takes on many manifestations, but there is none more envious than the impure. A creature that is vile and wicked, whose envy festers not into pitiful displays of mimicry but in an even uglier form of spite and animosity. The impure wants to be us. This much is known. But the impure also knows they cannot, and thus deludes themselves into a sense of false superiority at every turn. We see this in the Snow Elves and Sea Elves. The Aquatic Impostors, who seek to capture the legacy of Larihei’s nobility and progress by corrupting our blessed legacy through the murky lens of seawater or melted snow. And more recently we see this in the so-called “Proto-Elf” or “Ancient Elf.” The impure who deludes themselves not only culturally, but racially, in a laughable manifestation of their envy and desire for superiority bordering on mental illness. Do not be deceived by the insanity of the impure. Do not be deceived by the Ancient Elf myth. There are no fair skinned children of Malin. Only fair skinned children of Larihei, and those among them who shun their mother like petulant teens while the bulk of their family looks on in disgust. This is the Proto-Elf. This is the Sea Elf. This is the Snow Elf. Your enemy, at home and abroad, who seeks to subvert the proud culture of Haelun’or through lies and treachery. For these Elves, in their defective impurity, cannot create for themselves. So I say to you, when you see a mali who might declare themselves an “Ancient Elf,” seek either that you drive them out or re educate them. The impure are known to brainwash our youth, to steal them away to Elvenesse for indoctrination. Do not slay a victim that might be saved, but capture all for trial before the blessed eyes of Larihei and her children at home. Every “Ancient Elf” captured is a High Elf saved or an impure destroyed. Ay’larihei. liewyn'Larihei eltaeleh walehe ohn vallein eltaliyna walehe. kaean'leh thilln chul'okarae. maehr’sae hiylun’ehya.
  21. On the Qualities of Lessers, BEWARE: The Aquatic Impostor Of the affronts to High Elven purity and the motherland, there is none so vile as the aquatic impostor. Mali’ata (tainted Elves) that display an inexplicable and unsightly attraction to water, and who seek to embrace it as a cultural center in order to twist or eschew the teachings of Larihei to their own wicked purposes. These Elves are not merely base lessers, who would ignore the blessed authority and sanctity of the High Elven people, but impure traitors to their ancestry and blood. They are, at their core, High Elves who hold their history in irreverent contempt. Ones spawned of splinter families who prefer the company of the uncultured lesser to their own blessed kin. Self loathing and vile, their culture is parody to the proud and upstanding legacy of the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya. But it is not their vileness or pitifulness alone that should warrant aversion. No; these Elves are, without the lessers with whom they surround themselves and manipulate to serve their ends, both weak and hated. It is instead their spitefulness and corrupting influence that the pure children of Larihei must beware. Bearing such aversion and hatred of their own parodic culture that to take pride in their weak and ineffective ways is impossible, likely a result of what little remnants of pure blood swim within their veins, these Elves walk the earth as impostors clinging to the dregs of pure High Elven society. Feigning civility and regality while they debase themselves both behind closed doors and in strange druidic rings; be it with cubes of ice or, more recently, sea water. The aquatic impostor seeks to be you, but cannot ascend to the height of 'aheral culture and thus tries only to drag you down to their own embarrassing and sub-cultured level. The aquatic impostor has no merit and no prestige, and so desires to leech from the society that which they cannot create in an effort to benefit from and steal luxuries so that they might wear a mask of pure High Elven refinement. The aquatic impostor hates themselves for their inferiority, and so hates the pure High Elf in which whose shadow they creep with an animosity unlike any other impure; taking sickening pride in the corruption, debasement, and indoctrination of our blessed High Elven youth. For this reason I say: beware the High Elven impostor. Beware the impure. Beware the traitor. liewyn'Larihei eltaeleh walehe ohn vallein eltaliyna walehe. kaean'leh thilln chul'okarae. maehr’sae hiylun’ehya.
  22. The Azorella Reformation A historical recounting documenting modern Haelun’or’s most pivotal events in recent years. Penned by Phandelver on 10th of the Deep Cold, 1788 1767: The Sohaer of the time was Sulraell Visaj, the Maheral was Azorella Elibar’acal. Tensions arise when Azorella speaks out against the marriage of Evelon Telperion and Muriel Uradir. They were related not by blood, but still cousins-in-law, which Maheral Azorella argued to still be incestual in practice, reflecting a poor precedent for future generations. At this specific council meeting, the majority of the council abruptly speaks out in defiance of the Maheral, most notably the Sohaer himself, his Annilier Adeline, and Okarir’nor Nerithil Valarieth, leaving Nelgauth Maehr’tehral and Acaele Lazul the only ones in support of the Maheral. **To be noted: to question the Maheral’s declarations is considered heretical and outrageous, as per centuries of Haelunorian tradition. Such a display struck concern across Haelun’or, and discussion began to be held over simple tea-parties with Maheral Azorella in the Elibar’acal manor. Within the year, the term “Maheralist” began to be coined, first in derision but quickly embraced, defining those who believed in upholding the values of Haelun’or prior to the Diarchy. This movement soon unraveled the discovery of the Diarchy’s, primarily Dimaethor Visaj’s, attempts to erase Haelun’or’s history prior to his installation as Haelunor’s leader. Such a term- Maheralist, would further inspire the group of mali’thill to rekindle an old Haelunorian phrase, which appears often throughout their writings, missives, and important documents: “The Maheral simply is.” Soon after this, it was discovered that Sohaer Sulraell Visaj had in fact altered one of the laws of the Silver City in secrecy, that upset the balance of the role of Sohaer and Maheral, the law now giving more favour to the Sohaer and denying the will of the Maheral. He was quickly put on trial, and while there was no serious punishment inflicted as he was declared guilty by the judges, it was agreed upon to return the law to its original state, and for the Sohaer to make an open apology to the populace. Sulraell refused, thus leading to a single peaceful protest in the square demanding he follow through with the pararantirs’ verdict. 16th of the Sun’s Smile, 1768: A storm rages on this particular day in Haelun’or, which brought many people to find shelter in the citadel where many heard a shriek: The people panicked as they heard the agonized screams of their Maheral. Two councilors-- Nerethil Valarieth, and Aerendyl Lor’demar, refused to open the door, feigning confusion and deafness as the Malaurir was murdered only feet away. When the door was finally opened, it was far too late. Maheral Azorella was murdered in cold blood by a beast unleashed by Adeline. Okarir’maehr Kinahen Athrilum was found to also be in the room-- a physician who refused to act in the moment to save the Maheral. Never before, in all of Haelun’or’s history, has a Maheral been murdered by their own council. The Okarir’san, Aerendyl Lor’demar suddenly leaped into action- despite his earlier sluggishness, and despite Azorella’s bleeding body staining the marble, he tried to defend his fellow councilor, Adeline, as the people of Haelun’or demanded justice. When they both tried to make their escape, Aerendyl was captured, and after being convicted of plotting to kill the Maheral and collusion with Adeline, he was sentenced to death by acid-pitting: the last time the pit was put to use, as of 1788. The next two years would see the rise of Acaele Lazul taking Azorella’s place as Maheral, where he faced a nation divided. On one side, the Maheralists, led by Nelgauth Maehr’tehral, Ikur Sullas: who valued the Maheral’s word above all else, and followed the traditions of Haelun’or, and the Diarchists (primarily only the council itself): who sought to emphasize the achievements of their founder, Dimaethor Visaj, and his protege, Sulraell, often attempting to maintain control while seldomly making any public appearances. Unfortunately for them, the political environment soon brought Sulraell to resign from his position as Sohaer, and leave the city thereafter, Alaion Miravaris rising to take his place. The Maheralists would soon come to adorn a pink carnation upon their lapels-- a visual, open representation of their political alliances, chosen specifically to represent Maheral Azorella, come to be called “The Bee”, and the color she was famous for. This was coupled with the cry “Ay’Azorella,” the Maheralists refusing to allow her legacy-- and the atrocity that ended it, to be forgotten or forgiven. In retaliation, the Diarchists claimed the Maheralists led “lynch mobs,” despite the openly peaceful nature of the growing political movement. This only further inspired Maheralists to have open dialogue with the citizenry, often gathering in the main square of the city or the tavern, debating philosophy and informing the populace of the events. 13th of the Amber Cold, 1770: Elathion Dagre’sae, the head of the Diraar, who defended and guarded the Maheral honourably, publicly reveals a petition for the trial of councilors Kinahen and Nerithil, signed by the majority of the city’s populace. Despite the trial being inducted, testimonies of the two councilors were questionable and manipulative, one of the judges overseeing the verdict being Dimaethor Visaj himself, who persuaded the majority to soften the punishments of the two councilors, despite the warnings of Malaurir Avern’dionne. This trial stood as a pivotal moment, as the manipulation of their own Maheral, Acaele Lazul, began to reveal itself-- the man often consulting with the Diarchists, speaking with and confiding in Dimaethor Visaj, spending less and less time with the followers who supported him. Let the record show, Acaele Lazul is still, in fact, a good man-- only misled by the illusions of control by the Diarchists. The removal of Nelgauth Maehr’tehral from the council shortly thereafter would lead to the final act. 18th of the Deep Cold, 1771: The citizens gather in the Citadel for the agreed trial of Maheralist figureheads Sulii’ceru, Ikur Sullas and Muriel Uradir Without prior warning, the Sohaer and Maheral announce that they would be trialing an unagreed-upon set of Mali’thill. Ikur Sullas -- who had preemptively taken to the defendant’s podium -- declares this an act of corruption, stating “The Maheral simply is, and Acaele Lazul… you are not,” thus rebuking the Lazul’s claim to Maheral. It is in this moment, the citizenry decide collectively that Acaele Lazul is not, in fact, Maheral, and much of the Diarchist council fled from the city. This marked the beginning of the transition. The Malauriran Avern’dionne and Kelthran Iyathir, alongside Ikur Sullas, assume control of the chaos. The throne of the Diarchy is dismantled, the Council -- by then only Nerithil and the former Sohaer Miravaris -- is captured and summarily released to live in shame of their (in)actions. 1st of Snow’s Maiden, 1772: Ikur Sullas, by general consensus, is decided to be the new Maheral. He organizes the citizens, and alongside the two Maheralist Malauriran and the Laurir Maehr’tehral transform Haelun’or into a republic, restoring the true, traditional state of Haelun’or and its culture, after over a half-century of erasure underneath the Diarchy and Dimaethor Visaj. Malaurir Avern reintroduced a nation to democracy by guiding the newfound republic of Haelun’or through its first round of elections for their new council. The election of Nelgauth Maehr’tehral as the Sohaer of the new Republic, 1772 Introduction to the Azorella Reforms and the New Constitution of 1774, guided by Avern’dionne and Nelgauth Maehr’tehral.
  23. Dark Elves (also known as Mali’ker) Physical Appearance Dark Elves are the most muscular sub-race out of the three and as such are the best suited for physical labour and combat (as a note, this does not give you the right to be unrealistically strong, it is just that the other Elven sub-races are not as hardy as this sub-race). Mali’ker may be the strongest but are by no means the tallest with Dark Elves averaging around 5’10 to 6’4 in height (any taller than this and it you are reaching into High Elf territory and they’re called High Elves for a reason so, please, stick to these guidelines). The most defining features of Dark Elves are their skin colour, eye colour and hair colour which greatly differ from their paler counterparts. Dark Elves are renowned for their dark skin colour, unseen in any other race on Lord of The Craft, and range from light gray to jet black pigmentation. Purple can be a skin colour of Dark Elves but this is a rare occurrence and rarely seen in game. However, in direct contract with their dusky skin colours are their hair which is commonly pure white, like snow, or silver/platinum which is very common as well but hair colours such as black and a light blue (and I mean light as in edging on white with a blue tint, not vivid blue) are rare yet not unheard of. Typical eyes colours of Mali’ker include blue, green or violet, yet red is still commonly seen on the server and is a unique trait only Orcs and Dark Elves have. Dark Elven eyes are generally duller than their High Elf equivalents i.e they’re more low-key and not vivid or unrealistically bright. Brown and yellow eyes are not eye colours Dark Elves can possess. Mithius Dalma (Jonificus) Culture All three sub-races of Elves have their own different distinct and cultural differences from each other. Dark Elves, unlike the other sub-races, live their lives based almost entirely on passion and emotion which consequently means the other races often view them as simple or basic despite this not being the case. However, this is not to say all Dark Elves are headstrong and thrust themselves into positions without thought, Dark Elves will often consider their options and make a decision based upon rational thought over brashness, this comes with experience as most live decades upon decades. As said before, Dark Elves wear their hearts in their sleeves and are evidently more spirited than their paler counterparts and this is shown by even their fashion sense. Dark Elves dress in bold colours which darker reds, browns and black being popular but also light greens, blues and purples. Dark Elves are believers in natural beauty and as such female Dark Elves often show a bit of skin (this is not an excuse to dress provocatively or skimpily i.e no bikinis or anything of the sort). Jewelry is also incredibly important to Dark Elves and rings, brooches and even piercings are all used and common in Dark Elves, normally used to show which clan or family one is from or head of. Dark Elves also have a very family oriented society which is ruled by a military dictatorship basically with young ordinarily being trained in combat at young ages to make them effective warriors but also to discipline them. Dark Elf parents often decide what line of profession their child/children end up in as Mali’ker children are eager to meet the bars set for them and strive to do so. Dark Elven culture is all about honouring your clan and your ancestors, helping your fellow Dark Elf and respecting each other. Ancestors are well respected by all Dark Elves and are the diseased Mali’ker who possessed remarkable traits or achieved great things in their life times leading to them being eternally remembered. For more in depth knowledge on Ancestors, look at Dakirennis’ guide. For more in depth knowledge on Dark Elves as a whole, look at Lego XBOX's guide. 24. The Golden Pools ((CaptainMacro - Deviantart)) Back within the ancient days of Aegis, where the children of the four brothers were young and fresh, the forests of Malinor teemed with throngs of the long-lived elves. Though cursed with the infertility the fallen daemon had provided, their millennia-spanning lives were amiable. In this time, there was no high elf, dark elf, or even what would later be known as a wood elf--there were only the peaceful denizens of the woodlands. The Mali. Such grand lifespans lead to equally grand studies in philosophy, the arts, the sciences, and magic. Great discoveries and advances were made almost without notice--such things were seemingly commonplace within the nigh-immortal society of the elves. At some point in their history, though none could possibly pinpoint when, groups of elves began to dabble in arcane magics rather that of traditional druidism. The practice became popular among scholars and other learned mali--being able to pull forth elements they had studied from the void were both amusing and fascinating. Enter the influential scholar Larihei Lohmanih. Thought to have been conceived by a member of Malinor’s High Council - largely on account of her influence and interactions with it along with the populace that it oversaw - she eventually became a controversial figure at odds with the prevailing ideals of Mali culture of her time. Theories suggesting the causes for this range from views that the aggressiveness of the younger races threatened Mali way of life, disapproval of the complacency of Mali in regards to worldly affairs or that her stance on the status Mali had as the longest lived creatures meant they were responsible for the knowledge of the world, as well as entitled to it. Though their work was ignored mostly by the general populace (however, utterly loathed by the druids), their skills with magic grew and expanded into areas few would comprehend until the post-Aegis years. However, one discovery that was an endless source of interest and study was a geological and magical marvel--the Golden Pools. Deep within the earth, beneath the trees of old Malinor, Mali geologists discovered large cave systems with an abundance of what is now referred to as "Magegold." The substance was not unknown to these scholars, obviously, but within the centre of the largest chamber, there lay a pool of still water, imbued with magegold dust accumulated over untold millennia Curiously, due to the gold, the water itself could be enchanted like any other object--something previously thought impossible for liquids. Before further tests could be carried out, one scholar poured a previously-enchanted container of the liquid back into the main pool. A chain-reaction occurred throughout the entire body of water, and the enchantment itself spread to the rest of the inundated magegold. It is unknown what the original purpose of "bathing" could possibly be for. Some have thought that the pools was intended to heal wounds without the need of druids. Others have postulated it was an alchemist's dream--a way to turn base metals into gold. Whatever was originally intended, its postulated function to be was swept aside when its effect upon elves was realised. It was at this time during the initial studies of the pools that Larihei was ejected from the high council for her radical ideology. In retaliation, she and her supporters departed the main social hub of Malinor, and settled in a small commune outside the entrance to the pools. It was here that bathing in the pools became a popular past-time--encouraged mostly by Larihei herself in the belief that it enhanced their mental and magical capabilities. At first, the pools did not appear to do anything to a bather. It was, to most, a relaxing and calming experience, and many took to bathing as a means of easing emotional and physical strain. Though scorned by the druids and even the High Council, the scholarly elves continued to bathe regardless of the warnings. After many years of this leisurely activity, noticeable physical changes began to take form. Their hair lightened to softer shades, and their skin grew paler with a slight golden undertone. Though these effects were noticed, they were mostly disregarded by the bathers, if not the rest of the elven public. Elven society as a whole, cared very little. Those elves that bathed were free to do as they desired. Decades passed, and more changes took form. The pale elves grew distinctly taller and thinner than their brothers and sisters, yet now changes to their personality seemed to arise. Many bathers cared less for dancing and singing, and more for their studies. Even the politics of the realm - something mostly disregarded in the elven Utopia - were discussed and written upon to great lengths. To those who knew them previously, they seemed colder--less patient with their kin. The grand elven society began to worry, but still did nothing. After all, those elves were free to do as they pleased. Centuries passed. The bathers were utterly changed physically, and mentally. Their children were now born in the image of their parents; they matured with similar physical traits, and seemed predisposed to scholarly activities. Parents disallowed their children from marrying those of regular elves, for fear the next generation of offspring would need to spend more time in the pools to obtain their "blessing." Those who were not already the "blessed" were disallowed to enter the chamber of the pools, and those that managed to sneak in sometimes disappeared--never to be seen again. Many of the "blessed" scholars regarded the other races with grim disdain for their alleged "ignorance," and sometimes even belittled fellow elves for the same reason. At last, the elven society decided to take action. The Golden Pools were raided, and the caves that housed them were collapsed. This turbulant period of social upheaval lead to many of Malinor's scholarly elves to abandon their works, and embrace nature to a far greater degree. Distraught and horrified over the loss of their beloved chamber, Larihei demanded that they should leave Malinor to forge their own destiny. Many left with her, but an almost equal number remained behind in Malinor. Little is known why they did so, but their practice of segregation and their ideals of "purity" did not die out quickly, and in fact, many of these "pure" families managed to survive until even the end of Aegis itself. Larihei's followers settled in Asulon millennia before Iblees' destruction of Aegis (little is known as to how this occurred). There, they built the city of what would be referred to as "Haelun'or," though curiously they never expanded from it. Centuries before the Aegisian branch of high elves arrived, the whole population was wiped out by mysterious circumstances. As the first Aegisian stepped foot upon its hewn stone, the old city was in ruins, and only the Eternal College and fragments of its grand library remained intact. Rebuilding the city, the Aegisian high elves refounded the ancient society that once was, and with it, they uncovered secrets forgotten by time. Remnants of another pool had lain dormant beneath the ruined city, and were re-discovered by the Maheral Dio Astore, who invited a select few of the pure citizenry to bathe in the ancient waters, and feel the bliss of their ancestor's creation. With the end of Asulon coming shortly after, few others were able to experience it. Its secrets were lost, along with the last of the ancient high elves discoveries. Or, so the legend goes... The Effects of the Golden Pools The act of bathing in the Golden Pools is for high elves to "mend" any and all racial, physical, and mental impurities they may have. Being as bathers will likely be high elves already, a few bathing sessions will have noticeable effect on them--Brown hair will turn blond, for example. Other physical abnormalities, such as scars, will eventually disappear through bathing sessions, though this would likely take far more time. Traditionally, the pools have been known to transform elves into high elves (as you may have gathered from reading the above paragraphs). This is not a matter of a "quick-dip" however. To fully change into a high elf would require methodical bathing over the course of centuries (something unlikely to be possible due to the length of server time). ((Panoramia)) Shorter-term effects, as detailed in the above lore, are still possible. Elves should naturally retain any changes that occur to them from the pools. The other races, should they somehow come into contact with the enchanted waters, will not be so "lucky." It is likely that any changes will be impermanent (disappearing within an elven week of bathing) but, should they somehow continuously bathe, they may retain changes to themselves. As the body changes, so does the mind. Those affected will likely gain greater confidence in themselves and their own assertions. This can often lead to subjects appearing arrogant, and perhaps even conceited at times. Often, their inquisitive natures are heightened--sometimes to the point of appearing agitated when information is hidden from them. Another common effect is a calm disposition--pure high elves being relatively difficult to anger. They tend to have great control over their emotions, and only grow flustered in extreme circumstances. It has been postulated that the pools heighten the intelligence and magical capabilities of a bather, but there is no direct evidence to suggest this to be true or false. A High Elf's inquisitive nature, however, does tend to lean them towards scholarly arts--likely how the idea began in the first place. Special Thanks To:
