  1. ♪♫♪ Acaelanite Naming Conventions el’Oem el’Asiol’ehya Table of Contents I. Introduction II. Personal Names III. Honorifics IV. Surnames and Patronymics Introduction This document is intended to serve as a summary of typical Acaelanite naming conventions, as well as their history, etymology, and cultural role within the ethnoreligious community. More information on the Acaelanites can be found here. It is very important to note that Ancient Elven is highly conservative when used as a liturgical language by the Acaelanites. When spoken or written in a formal register, this language is identical to the form employed by the mali’aheral and most other elven ethnoreligious groups. This is because of the significance attributed to Ancient Elven as the language of ahe’Malin and his initial followers, and the first language formulated by the mortal descendants as per the account of Creation. As such, the Acaelanites generally do not allow any religious, ceremonial, artistic, administrative, and legal writings (or formal speech) to be corrupted or bastardized into any form other than standard Ancient Elven. Consequently, the Acaelanites do not possess their own ‘dialect’ of Ancient Elven. However, in the specific context of informal speech, there exists certain linguistic concepts, contractions and phonological tendencies unique to the Acaelanite accent of spoken Ancient Elven, thereby giving rise to an Acaelanite ‘ethnolect’. This is mostly exhibited in personal names, which are inherently more adaptable to language change than formal speech and acceptably outside of the elevated register of Ancient Elven to be varied with some creativity. As aforementioned, this ethnolect should not be understood as a language or dialect separate from Ancient Elven, but rather a form of the spoken language, which has only ever been consigned to writing through the transformation of root words into names over milennia. OOC (The Aengul Availer, Revelator of Creation to the Acaelanites) Personal Names In most instances, Acaelanites employ the same personal names as other elves, derived directly from the standard form of the Ancient Elven language. However, language shifts, pronunciation or accent variations and centuries of contact with outside influences as seafarers, merchants and diaspora have led to the genesis of a select few personal names which characterize members of the Acaelanite community. The personal names below originated as recombinations, derivations, or contractions of their millennia-old Ancient Elven root words, and may include elements or motifs unique to Acaelanite traditions that are unlikely to be employed by other mali. Accordingly, they frequently serve as a differentiator of Acaelanite identity. Some examples, inclusive of their original etymology, include: Ahernevan - from Ancient Elven roots ‘ahern’ meaning ‘blessing’ and ‘van’ meaning ‘to fare’ (travel) Ahernesar - from Ancient Elven word ‘ahern’sair’, meaning ‘one who spreads blessing’ Ahensayar - However, certain names have come to be identified with particular genders by virtue of their identification with renowned bearers. In instances where names of the same origin have multiple variants or alternate transcriptions, the closest name to the Ancient Elven root words (and in all likelihood, the earliest to arise chronologically) has been described and the remainder labeled as ‘variants’. In Ancient Elven, the word ‘van’ means ‘to fare’, that is, a relatively archaic form of ‘to travel’ or ‘to go’, and is present chiefly in the phrase ‘van’ayla’ (Common: farewell). The Acaelanites employ this word much more broadly, using it to refer to any form of travel, though particularly seafaring for mercantile purposes. In the Acaelanite ethnolect, the wide use of the archaic ‘van’ is much more common than the standard Ancient Elven ‘narn’ (Common: to travel). This use of ‘van’ has given rise to a number of additional words relevant here, including ‘di’van’, only approximately translatable as ‘the state of not traveling’. In modern Acaelanite usage, the word ‘di’van’ has come to refer to a community, enclave or home of Acaelanites where they are settled when not seafaring. As many of the names listed above originate as derivations of Ancient Elven root words, many variants exist preserving their linking apostrophes (e.g. Tilreloem to Tilr’eloem). However, these have not been included for the sake of avoiding repetition. Many linguistic features evident in the Acaelanite accent of spoken Ancient Elven can be observed in the names listed above, including certain vowel shifts, the replacement of some apostrophes with vowels for greater fluidity and a conflation between the pronunciation of ‘m’ and ‘n’ at the end of particular words. Several of the names above end in the Ancient Elven suffix of ‘-n’ or ‘-an’, designating plurality. This is believed to originate from an ancient Acaelanite belief in the good fortune of plurality, by virtue of the ‘Seven Skies’ of the one Acaelan. Many of the ‘original’ Ancient Elven forms (e.g. conjoined root words) of the names above are millennia old, and as such are expressed in a fashion that would be archaic or unconventional if used in modern times. (Virayat Laurir Halernal, a historical Acaelanite tir’sair) Honorifics Acaelanites commonly employ honorifics amongst themselves. These honorifics follow the personal name but precede the surname. Some examples may include: [Personal Name] Laurir - from Ancient Elven ‘laurir’, meaning ‘noble’. The highest honorific, reserved for those who claim direct patrilineal descent from ahe’Malin (and thus first in the patrimony of the evarn’sae) or the learned sages of the tir’sairan, who may or may not hold that lineage. [Personal Name] Amirsan - from Ancient Elven ‘amir’san’, meaning ‘word [of the] forester’, in reference to the tradition that holds ahe’Malin as a ‘forester’. An honorific used for certain Acaelanites of famed lineages, such as those who claim descent from the Seven Clans of the Alderfolk. [Personal Name] Acal - from Ancient Elven ‘acal’, meaning ‘golden’, ‘rich’, or ‘wealthy’. Given cultural values derived from centuries of teachings on the evarn’sae, the state of being wealthy does not have the same negative connotations to the Acaelanites that it does in some other elven communities. Regardless, this honorific has substantially evolved from its etymological origins, and now denotes a commander, official, ship’s captain, chief, elder or community leader. [Personal Name] Cerutur - from Ancient Elven 'ceru'tur', meaning 'strong bone'. An honorific used for Acaelanite knights in the quasi-chivalric tradition of the divethan (Common: immortals), cognatic with the human 'sir' or 'dame' in reference to a knight. These concepts hearken back to the original companions of ahe'Malin in the time of Malin'or. [Personal Name] Luerane - from Ancient Elven ‘luerane’, meaning literally ‘not bound’, but more accurately translating to ‘freeman’. Though any custom of indentured servitude has long since been eliminated amongst the Acaelanites, this honorific has survived to apply to any Acaelanite of lesser noble lineage, or a low-level administrator. [Personal Name] Mallir - from Ancient Elven ‘mallir’, meaning ‘great friend’. A polite way of referring to a common Acaelanite, equivalent to ‘mister/miss’ in Common. In instances where an Acaelanite might be technically entitled to multiple honorifics, the highest status honorific is generally used first and primarily, often (but not always) to the exclusion of lower ones. Honorifics do not replace surnames, but are used more commonly than them in some settings, as a form of formal ‘shorthand name’ with the surname omitted. To observers, this may give the incorrect impression that honorifics are Acaelanite surnames. In reality, they are more akin to titles signifying status, used as forms of address. Given this propensity for confusion, Acaelanites typically only refer to their honorifics amongst one another - amidst outsiders they will primarily employ their surnames. Surnames and Patronymics Acaelanite surnames - more commonly referred to as clan or seed names - remain largely consistent with those exhibited by other elven ethnoreligious groups. Clan or seed names typically represent tribal identities and storied lineages tracing back to the time of ahe’Malin. This heritage (combined with the long lifespans of successive elven generations) means that Acaelanite surnames are inherently more conservative and less adaptable to language change than their personal names, and for this reason generally resemble those of other mali’ame or their mali’aheral and mali’ker cousins in their use of standard Ancient Elven. A notable exception to this is patronymics, where Acaelanites sometimes employ the Alderfolk patronymic preposition of ‘aen’ on account of their parallel cultural development (and close historical relations) with that group. The word ‘aen’ originated as a corruption of the Ancient Elven suffix ‘-onn’, and is cognatic with that word, with both translating to ‘son/daughter of’. However, whereas ‘-onn’ is attached to the father’s name or title as a suffix, in Alderfolk patronymics, ‘aen’ is included as a preposition before the father’s name. iyul’maele asiol oem Acaelan ito kae’leh, el’Tuva Uelln’ehya el’Bilokir Tuva’leh, illern’leh el’Taynuel maele’ehya ay evarn’sae ahe’Malin’onn Lye’ehya.

His thoughts were haunted by the faces of the fallen. Those who were still alive however, hated him with a burning passion. After all, a century of conflict and after decades of constant fighting had taken its toll on the bastard Prince. Kosher still remembered when he had first been recruited. He was visiting home in Stygian Hollow when a Norlandic raid had come, and he had been thrown into a fighting force consisting of people known as ‘Rustlers.’ Little did he know at the time that they would shape him into a warrior of renown, from a simple smith from the hills of Urguan to a battle-hardened soldier. There he met some of his greatest friends, such as Elsil and Elsiimah’Ceru, the likes of the great Blair, and even his best friend.. Brian. Brian, his first love. He didn’t even remember how they met, but it was love at first sight. They always were up to trouble, and even got married on a whim. They planned to settle down in the Duchy of Elysium, not wanting a life of crime in the Rustlers any longer. They were more than just husbands, they were best friends till the end. And once Brian’s end came at the noose after a brutal battle at Yong Ping, Kosher thought he would never recover, and some say he never did. Everyday after that, Kosher swore that every Yong Pinger that ever tried to be friends with him, he would slay. After Brian’s death, Kosher was crushed. His brother Elliphas came back into his life, but it did not fill the hole in his heart. Fal’leon tried, and failed. Thus, Kosher left the decaying House Ceru, the successor to the Rustlers, and tried to make himself useful. After a few unfortunate incidents, he was banished from the Kingdom of Elysium after over two decades of faithful service. After a string of slanderous insults, Kosher went to join the Ferrymen for a bit as he found a new home in the Crown of Elvenesse. Evar’tir Oranor, the High Prince of Elvenesse took him on. Though Kosher dreamed of something bigger than Elvenesse, he dreamed of Elven unity. Thus he aided Vytrek Tundrak’s efforts to unify Elvendom, and was given an impossible task. Though whilst all this was going on, he met his new love… Melawen Taliame’onn stormed into his life like a raging storm, taking him by surprise. They got married quickly, and shortly after had Acanthus and Aster Daesmon, with the former getting prepared to become Prince-Heir. They had a successful marriage by all means, though after a plot to assassinate Kosher was unveiled, she quickly went into hiding with their youngest child, Clematis. Whilst his marriage to Melawen was occurring, plans for Elven unity were being set in stone. Though one elf posed a threat, and thus had to be silenced. Kosher embarked on a mission with his son Acanthus, and multiple men at arms and ambushed Minuvas Melphestaus, a supposed prophet and claimant to be the ‘Speaker of Malin.’ They successfully put him into a coma, causing the downfall of the Princeps of Ebonwood and directly causing the massacre of the Mali’Imperi. For this effort, it was cemented that Kosher would take over the Crown of Elvenesse, now the Crown of Amaethea as Prince-Royarch, as Vytrek Tundrak had been crowned High Prince of Malinor. His reign was largely peaceful, other than a small war with the Uruk Horde that resulted in the prevailing might of Malinor as a whole. Though, crumbling relationships and a stint of depression plagued the Prince, and after a mere decade and a half of rule, he abdicated the crown in favor of Acanthus. He would no longer play a large part in global politics, other than a few minor moves, made mostly to anger his enemies. Kosher’s life was mostly waiting. As the world calmed down, he settled down with a woman named Vullenia and had a son named Cetaur, who he would come to adore during a stint on Failor. He still was a soldier and fought a bit, but mostly for money and nothing compared to the evil acts he used to do. A few people died, but at the end of the day killing was his job still on Almaris. Nothing he had done was horrible after Malinor though. He mostly stayed out of trouble and kept to himself the his fellow Lords of Hus, a collective of wealthy individuals that held immense influence in the Far Northern regions of Almaris. Once the migration to Braevos was made, Kosher once again stirred, beginning to make his name known for harmless pranks or shenanigans. Yet, after over a century of constant battle, being loyal to a mask to a crown, to being disgraced from it all, he was finally through. All that repentance was for naught, as he was executed like a dog over nothing. The only honorable thing about such a demise was the champion who gave him the honor of a duel. The Maehr’evar Order The Guardians of Knowledge Overview The long lives of the Elves tend to draw them to scholarly pursuits, either to fill a want for adventure, so they may improve their own knowledge and wisdom, or so they can protect knowledge and the world for future generations. The Maehr’evar seeks to be a place for the Elves who seek to learn, research, write, teach, and explore. Their duties are as varied as they are important. Headquartered in the Great Athenaeum of Elvenesse, this group of scholars and adventurers are always seeking new recruits to improve both the nation of Elvenesse and the world at large. Structure The Maehr’evar are organized in a loose but effective structure, which tends to serve their purposes well. The ranks of the order are as follows: Grandmaster The Grandmaster of the Maehr’evar has the duty of keeping tabs on those below him in the order and allotting resources to different projects. It is he who organizes meetings of members, calls major expeditions, maintains the library and its collection, and who deals with both foreign scholarly guilds and the Council of Elvenesse. The position is currently held by Elros Silma. Masters of the Order Masters of the Order are those who are experienced at their craft and can serve as a bridge between the Grandmaster and the Ordermen. Generally, there is to be a Lorekeeper, who is to coordinate the librarians, writers, and teachers of the order, and the Scoutmaster, who focuses more on expeditions, adventurers, and cartographers. Ordermen The Ordermen of the Maehr’evar is the rank and file position of the guild. They are all considered equal scholars and adventurers of repute. They may lead their own projects, write their own books, and teach their own lessons as they will, and they may help each other on larger projects when needed. Journeymen The Journeymen are those who just joined the Order and seek to become Ordermen. They are to hold an apprenticeship under a current member of the Order, preferably one with similar interests, in order to learn our ways, tenets, and procedures. Once deemed ready to start their own projects by the one whom they are shadowing, they are inducted into the order as full Ordermen. Duties The members of the Maehr’evar can be anything they want within the wider category of scholars, and may determine their own projects. They may freely move between any field they have interest in. However, many projects will tend towards a few areas, broadly categorized as writing, research, teaching, and exploration. Writing An imperative part of preserving knowledge and enhancing culture is to create new works, both artistic and educational in nature. The Maehr’evar will encourage and sponsor works of create and non-fiction writing among the people of Elvenesse, in order to expand our collection and enhance our peoples culture and knowledge. Research In order to learn and to record knowledge, one must seek it out. This may be through visiting other libraries to read or purchase copies of new books, by looking at ruins found by explorers, or by looking into the powers and effects of the less dangerous artifacts within our possession. Teaching It is no use to horde knowledge if you do not pass it on to future generations. Hence, teachers and librarians who organize lessons and help people find the books and knowledge they seek are another important facet of the order. Exploration The final major task of the Maehr’evar is the exploration of the world to find ruins to explore, monsters to fight, and dark cults and covens to exterminate. We seek to map the world, note where places of interest are, and deal with them as necessary, independently or with the help of other, more combat focused groups. The Maehr’evar Code The Ordermen swear to uphold this code upon entry to the guild, the four rules of the Maehr’evar Order. Breaking these rules bring you under the mercy of the Grandmaster, and can warrant anything from a warning to expulsion from the order. I. Unwarranted Harm Or Death Should Be Avoided At All Costs. We’re here to codify the world, not turn it into a pile of ash and bones. II. The Sovereignty Of Nations Shall Be Respected At All Times. While it pains us to allow knowledge to go unrecorded, or worse, for dangerous knowledge to run amuck, it is not our place to supercede any nation. It is best to not become criminals in the eyes of the world. III. Knowledge Should Be Treated With Respect And Care. It is difficult to index burnt books, or to categorize a destroyed relic. Obviously not everything we attempt to collect will survive it’s travel to the guildhall, but try to not willingly break things. Nothing is worse than lost knowledge. IV. Power Merits Respect. Along with the mundane, we may often collect pieces of extraordinary danger. Proper respect should be given to such things, and they should never be trifled with. Understand that pieces that have been deemed ‘restricted’ are not toys we horde for ourselves, but are items we guard the world from. The Great Seals The Maehr’evar Order grades every piece of knowledge in their possession with a seal. The seals are red-wax, and the individual stamps are in the possession of the Grandmaster. Each Seal is stamped with a piece of parchment which gives a brief detail of the object, and any needed information. There are four seals in total: Mundane, Guarded, Prohibited, & B.C. The Mundane Seal is the most common, and identifies this piece as typical knowledge, giving it the lowest rating of danger/power. All pieces which are open for public viewing, such as the books in the public library, are stamped with Mundane Seals. Mundane seals are given the mark ‘M’. An item with a Guarded Seal means that this item is normally only to be handled by Ordermen. These items are considered a bit too dangerous to be shown to the public, but on request may be taken from the reliquary to be studied or used by outside forces. This seal is marked with a ‘III’ symbol. The Prohibited Seal signifies that this item is of immense power or otherwise value, and should never leave the reliquary under any circumstances. These are pieces which are kept away from the world due to high risk of abuse. Even Ordermen are disallowed from viewing these pieces, and need the express permission, as well as chaperoneship of, the Grandmaster. The mark of this charm seal is a bolded ‘X’. Finally, the B.C. Seal is the most important of all the graded seals, and is given independent of the others. This means a piece can have both the B.C. Seal as well as one of three previous seals.. Standing for ‘Black Contingency’, any item with this seal is to be destroyed if at risk of falling into outside hands. Obviously, only items which are deemed as near cataclysmic are ever given this charm seal. The B.C. Seal is the only time any piece of Knowledge is marked for destruction, and holds a rather powerful and somber place in the Order’s culture. It’s mark is a ‘Skull’ symbol. How to Join In order to join the Maehr’evar, a candidate should seek out the Grandmaster in person or start a correspondence via bird. The Grandmaster will then set up a short interview with potential candidates to gauge their interests and disposition so he can match them with an Orderman to study under. Once deemed ready, the Grandmaster will give the Journeyman the Oath, at which point they will become a full Ordermen of the Maehr’evar. As a note, those seeking to join must be citizens of Elvenesse, or at least able to enter the city. OOC Notes
