Dear Mama,

            It’s been a little while since I’ve written you. Things got kinda busy here, and Mr. Angus didn’t have a lot of time to help me with letters. I remember what you said too, right before I left, about not writing you so that I wouldn’t live in the past. For the past few years, I thought I’d done that. I’ve made new friends here, and my cousins have been nice. I’ve gotten used to living in the big city and meeting all sorts of new people.

            But . . . something happened a year or two ago. It started at a jousting tournament where all the bravest knights and nobles of Idunia were competing. My best friend Senthilde Vourkehardt entered the competition, so I had come to cheer her on (I wish you could meet Tildy – she’s so sweet and nice, and I know you would love her)! After the tournament had ended, I was chatting with Tildy and her friends Mateo and Juliano when all of a sudden, a thick fog rolled in over the fairgrounds. Before we knew it, it was so dark and foggy that I could hardly even see the people next to me. I was already a little spooked, but then I started hearing voices.

            At first, it was just whispering. It was like they were just barely out of reach; like if I stepped a little closer, I could make out what they were saying. I knew better than to go wandering off though; Tildy had told me stories about evil creatures called darkspawn who will try to lure you away to hurt you. I guess I was too young to know about those when I still lived out in the country with you, even though I’m sure they must be there too. I hope you’re ok living all alone out there. If I’d known scary things like that existed, I wouldn’t have left you by yourself.

            Anyway, I stayed close to my friends, but then I heard this ear-piercing scream of pain and fear. And . . . it sounded just like you.

            I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared by something since . . . well, since Papa. If Juliano hadn’t kept a hold on me, I would have run after you as fast as I could. I imagined you coming up to visit to surprise me and getting attacked by something before you could reach Ildon. Even after Tildy’s father, Castamir, guided all of us to shelter in Angrenost’s tower while the knights went out to find what kind of dark creature was causing the sound, I couldn’t get your voice out of my head. What if that really had been you, and I never saw you again?

            I miss you, Mama. I miss our life back before everything changed. I’ve tried fitting in here; I really have. But I still just feel so different. Take my best friend, Tildy. She’s been so very friendly and nice to me and generous with her things and her time. But she’s a Vourkehardt, a noble who lives in a big palace. For as long as she’s lived, her hobbies have been jousting and tea parties with the other noble girls. Tildy is becoming a squire next year, probably for the Tari of Idunia herself. She’s defeated veteran jousters with just one arm, and everybody I know admires her and expects great things from her. She talks so confidently and speaks and writes so well.

            Meanwhile, every time I talk, I can’t stop hearing my accent. I’m not talented or brave or pretty or well-spoken like her. Just hearing whispers in the fog makes me nervous, and seeing children my age get injured makes me feel sick and want to run away, instead of standing and fighting for my friends. Every kid I’ve met wants to be some kind of knight or brave warrior, while I couldn’t imagine something I’d want to do less. I just feel so out of place here in the big city. Sometimes I lay awake and cry and wish I could run back home into your arms.

            But I know I can’t. I promised you I wouldn’t come back, and I don’t want to break that promise. I promised you that I’d make a life for myself here, and that I’d find something that makes me happy. Some days, I wish I hadn’t made that promise. I was only five or six . . . I could be content doing just about anything. Now all I want to do is to see you again.

            I’ll keep trying, Mama. I want to make you proud. I’ll keep trying things, and I’ll keep smiling for you. Somehow, I’ll find a way to fit in here.

LEADING A HOUSE IS A TASK that requires a lifetime of continual learning and adaptation. It requires difficult, often polarizing decisions; it comes with loss; and it forms the basis of one’s identity for the remainder of their days. Much of my youth and adulthood was wrought with the worries of properly fulfilling the legacy left by my father, Aurellius, and I cannot say that every step of the way was easy—yet even so, I cherish the time I have been given to lead my family and I would trade it for nothing.

I retire wholly satisfied with all I have done and well pleased with the position I leave the House of Greye and its Barony in, which was not only the work of my own hands but that of my father, siblings, children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. It fills this old heart with pride to know that I am leaving it to such capable folk, and I hope that the many generations that come after me follow in the footsteps of those who preceded, for each and every member of Greye has my heart.

Being of sound mind and body, I, Ser Aurus Edmond Greye-O’Rourke, do abdicate to my heir, Augusta ‘Rhuniel’ Aedrica Greye. Her dedication to the House, as well as her studies in diplomacy, etiquette, and history have continually brought me pride. She has proven herself a young woman full of wisdom, careful consideration, and leadership that I am confident will usher the House into further prosperity for so long as she leads.

Augusta shall henceforth hold the titles Baroness of Edrica and Matriarch of House Greye. Further, I bestow upon her the epiphet ‘Prudentia’ for her soundness of mind, discernment, and sensibility.

Dear Mrs. Zimrabar,

You don't know me, but the name's Angus, and I'm one of the mailmen here in jolly old Ildon. Your daughter Reniril came to me and told me how she had just moved here from your farm to stay with your big-city relatives, and how you had asked her to send letters back home. She brought a bunch of pictures she'd drawn of her adventures so far, and she was awful keen on showing me all of them and explaining them. It's a slow mail day today, so I offered to write up an explanation of each of the drawings for you, as Miss Zimrabar hasn't learned her letters well enough to write a whole letter yet.

No doubt it won't surprise you to hear that Miss Zimrabar could have drawn and told me stories all day, each more fanciful than the last, but I think that these three best convey to you how she is adjusting to life in Ildon. She seems to me to have settled in well, already making friends, and she is an inquisitive young lass with boundless energy and an appetite for learning. I will be teaching her some basics in how to swim in the next day or two; with the city itself built on the water, being able to stay afloat is a necessity here, and it will enable her to board and explore some of the ships that are moored farther out in the bay. Perhaps I might even be able to send her out to deliver mail eventually, so she can earn a bit of an allowance. I will be sure to remind her to write you every week and will help her out in writing until she can write well enough to do so on her own.

Tea Time

Aurelian Greye invites the ladies of the realm to visit the Keep of Edrica for tea! Take advantage of the evening to socialize with other ladies and make new friends, wear your fanciest dress, and play a game or two amongst companions. All ladies are invited, though those who reside in the area, (Ildon and Adria) are especially requested to make an appearance. 

Several tea mixtures will be available at the Greye keep, alongside pastries and sweets made by the family. Guests may also bring their own to share at the party as well.

Would You Rather

After introductions and chatting, ladies will be invited to play a game of ‘would you rather’ to spark striking conversation and merriment. Each guest will be provided with two pieces of colored wool. A question of the ladies’ preference will be asked, to which each lady will present the colored wool corresponding to their answer. Guests are encouraged to bring questions to enter into the game as well, should they wish.

Contest of Dress

As a rather obvious excuse to don one’s finery, guests are encouraged to wear their favorite and finest dresses to tea, for a competition shall be held to show off the skills of Azuras’ many seamstresses. Extra points shall be allotted for those who also show off treasured accessories, such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, gifts and finery collected over the years, inspired by Aurelian’s beloved ivory shoeclips. The winner of this contest shall receive a prize of 100 mina.

On The Topic of Men

Should any men wish to participate in this tea, they shall be REQUIRED to don their finest dress, and fully immerse themself in ladies’ tea for the evening. Otherwise they shall be turned away at the door.

Upon the passing and abdication of MAERIL-EMIGLIANA O’ROURKE, the ownership of the County of Ildon had been passed to me. However, I, EÍNÍN-ALWETH O’ROURKE, shall be passing the title of the County to my son, CATHAL O’ROURKE.

While I retain the title of Matriarch of the House Rourke, per our tradition of such title to be possessed by the eldest, active woman of O’ROURKE blood..

❀ …Ownership of the County, and title of THE RIGHT HONOURABLE shall be handed off to CATHAL O’ROURKE. I shall instead retain the place of his Right Hand of the County.

❀ Should he bear any children, per the will and our traditions, his Heir shall be his first-born daughter. 

❀ Furthermore, CATHAL O’ROURKE shall need to take the Oath of Tar-Numenetar, honoring the wishes of MAERIL-EMIGLIANA O’ROURKE.

Crackling embers. A chilly spring breeze could not be fully kept out of Aurelian’s room, no matter how hard she tried. New the keep was, yes, but creaking of doorframes still manifested, lingering chills seeped into every opening. She had taken to pushing a blanket up to the door frame of her balcony on nights that were simply a touch too windy. That oversized dog of hers resigned to his spot on the floor next to the hearth. She had shooed that Tawantinsuyin from her chambers after their evening talk, for the hour grew late and slumber began to lull behind her eyes. The stairs creak too, new as they were. Another mental note was made of things to be improved around the keep. 

After a while of nightly routine, Aurelian took a moment to set out that silver gown of hers. Tomorrow was a busy day, a ball, a coronation, a wedding. Precious shoe clips gifted from a princess were placed upon her table, two pairs of shoes at the foot of her bed… she couldn’t make up her mind on which to wear. She searched for a while for those earrings of Lunarite and diamonds she once possessed, saddened when she remembered the trade she made of them to secure a gift for her brother. Suppose she could wear her hair down, it was getting rather long again finally. 

It did not take long for sleep to find her, a good ten to fifteen minutes after she sank under the furs, she drifted off. Chilly winds battled by layers of blankets melted into warm autumn sunlight, in a field of natural decay where all the leaves had turned a million shades of red and gold. Two horses prodded about at the edge of that field, their reigns held by Kusi who watched over the girls in their study. Two littles, Eirene and Neasa, squatted over a crimson butterfly. The girls giggled and took notes, behind them Aurelian sketched the general shape of the wings, and made to quickly put down paint on the drawing, roughly color matching the insect. 

She set the parchment to dry, watercolor dried rather fast. Her silver gaze wandered back to him and the horses. He stood in silence, scanning that field, ensuring the girls would have no worry in their merriment born of butterflies. Take a guard, Aurelian, always take a guard. He counted as one. Andromede dubbed it fact the very day when they were little and had him follow her around to protect her. After a while, he let the horses wander the field, and made his way to the girls to see the butterfly they found. Eirene and Neasa had been insistent on his inclusion. To Aurelian’s surprise, the joy radiated from him when they searched for butterflies. Such a simple thing it was, far from the slaughter of fellspawn or bad men, yet still that joy was ever present.

Aurelian’s head tilted to the tree line, an echo of giggle from the pair of girls as Kusi entertained them in some way or another. Crimson caught her eye. The scent of tippens root lingered, as well the distant sound of a crackle of fire… though she could not see a flame anywhere. She made to wander away from Kusi and the girls, tall grasses tugging at her skirts as she waded through the field. Tippens root, some rotting corpse, the usual. That rotting stench was not present, no, it was iron, and ink, the scent of pastries from a city bakery, herbs and alcohol from a hospital. Below that rotting corpse, fresh blood pooled, an expanding puddle of crimson creeping to her boots. Kusi’s shout echoed behind her, Aury, Aury! 

A bone splitting crunch.

Aurelian jolted awake, that crunching sound engrained in her mind. It had her heart racing, though night had made its way for day, as it always had, and always will. A splitting headache brought a brief wave of nausea to her, and for a moment she thought she’d lose her stomach right there in her bed. What an odd dream. She pulled herself out of bed, her feet resting upon brand new wood floors that had yet to wear and splinter. After a while, she caught her breath, her silver gaze searching out the jewelry box that sat on her desk. Her hands still trembled as she reached for the box, opening it and searched for a certain set of earrings. Those bones made earrings clacked together as they were removed. No, they were no sparkle of lunarite, this was true. She had stopped wearing them, people were calling her a pagan, calling those earrings grim, for they were once a person. For those earrings were the result of a deep rage, they were a person and a bloodline who shed the ichor of her own family. 

Those earrings were placed next to the shoe clips from the night before. Bone did not shine, no, but Greyes had always been good at making a statement, one way or another.

I, Maerîl-Emigliana O’Rourke in good health and soundness of mind, do make decrees upon the event of my disappearance, capture, otherwise untimely demise. 

I leave the distribution of these orders to be handed out by my chosen executor; Ser Arthur Marsyr. My trusted friend and close colleague.

It has been an honor to serve and support the High Kingdom of Idunia as High Admiral of Ports, Master of Tomes, Royal Bard, Justiciar of the Order of the White Tower, Knight of the White Tree and to have been friends with some of the most extraordinary people. Letters to them are to be distributed upon my behalf as attached below. 

On matters of Wealth:

My earthly wealth and possession of coin is to be passed down to my granddaughter and heir, Einin-Alweth O’Rourke. With allowances to be handed at her discretion to offspring of her choosing. The rest shall be invested in the upkeep of The County of Ildon. 

On matters of Estate:

The County of Ildon is to be passed to my granddaughter and heir, Einin-Alweth O’Rourke, should she find it fit to elect another successor, I would hope it to be Cathal O’Rourke to take the mantle. Should the need arise, the next of kin will take either of their places as Lord or Lady Regent of the Comital Paramountcy. 

The Towers Tirgoneth shall stay in the control and possession of Ser Arthur Marsyr and his chosen heir after him.

The Lordship of Edrica shall stay in the patented hands of Greye and Ser Aurus, with his chosen successor as heir. 

 My capital shop is to be taken over by the line of Zimrabar to be run in the pursuit of aiding my successors in maintaining wealth and upkeep of Ildon. With allowances to Wyllm O’Riley, the Marsyrs and Colm O’Rourke. 

Control of my elite force of soldiers, the Elendâri stays with Ser Arthur Marsyr as my trusted Knight-Captain and military commander. At both the discretion of himself and Einin as she takes the mantle, orders are to be given solely to him and my sergeants and captains. 

On Matters of Possessions:

There have been many armaments and other items and trinkets that have come into my hands throughout the years of my life. These were things that I carried with me every day or have crafted myself in the pursuit of glory. I do hereby allow some of said armaments to be displayed or distributed as follows.

The Tabard of Rourke is to enter the hands of the next Count or Countess, and follow suit with each successor when they are appointed the role of leadership.

The Flanged Mace of the Wintered Witch is to be put into the hands of Cathal O’Rourke, so that he may lead with the weapon that brought me great victory.

The Liar’s Bane previously in the possession of Edwyn O’Rourke shall be passed on to the most combat and moral-oriented member of Rourke by his own choosing, or put into storage.

Airgead, my deepsteel mythril war axe is to be placed into the hands of Einin O’Rourke for her resolve in stamping the significance it had to her mother, and overcoming it to see it as a weapon that got me through many wars.

My Radiant Banner is to be put into the hands of The Iron Lady, Ojo Ugokoyama Atsuko, my good friend for a multitude of battles by one another’s sides, and her unknowing inspiration to me for all of these years as the best warrior I have ever met. Something to remember me by, even if it cannot be put to use. 

My Templaric Trophies are to be presented to Arthur Marsyr as most of them were gathered either by his side or in defense of the place we built together.

My Lobster Chitin is to be given to the girl Ayni, she gave me much comfort in my end days and I hope she takes this well as something to remember me by.

My spoils of war and battle are to be put on display in the keep of Rourke to tell my tales. 

The majority of my collection of instruments is to be given to Bronadron Callaghan, for his love of music and bright outlook on life. Always remember I was in your corner through it all, Nicky.

The rest, by discretion of my executor, are to be gifted to various members of Zimrabar, Rourke, Greye, and Marsyr, for they are the strongest pillars of the Lordship I have built.

On Matters of Wishes:

It is my wish that the Greyes and Cathal O’Rourke take the Oath of Tar-Numenetar, to follow my legacy as one of the first people to take the oath when it was introduced by Numenetar himself.

Should Cathal wed, and produce an heir, it would be in the good graces of his great-grandmother and Predecessor that he would elect the first born girl of his line to inherit the County. Since our line as O’Rourkes has remained in a matriarchal system for many centuries, his election is technically a break in this system.

FOR SEVERAL YEARS the hillsides of Ildon have rung with the sounds of labour. Now, having worked dutifully to construct a new home for themselves under the eye of the gracious Admiral Maeril, the Greyes have completed the construction of their home—Edrica. The steadfast keep finds itself atop the windswept hill of Staloméne amid towering autumn trees, near the beaches and sandy shores of the river Angcelume, befitting its historically coastal family. Following a private christening, the House of Greye now opens the gates of Edrica to all.

THE HOUND RACE

HOSTED WITHIN THE HEART OF EDRICA, the Greyes welcome their allies into their manor for a festive racing of hounds. With each Greyehound raised by the gentle, calloused hands of Ser Aurus himself, participants will be gifted one of these noble creatures for the purposes of the race and to keep afterwards. The winner will be afforded a sum of 100 mina.

THE CAVERN BRAWL

FROM THE MANOR, guests are invited to join the Greyes below the ‘Dog House’, Edrica’s tavern. There, in a decorative underground cavern, an elimination-style melee will be held within the family’s fighting pit. The winner of the melee will be granted a sum of 300 mina and will be christened the Guest of Honor alongside a token of victory. 

THE TAVERN NIGHT

FINALLY, THE GREYES WELCOME THEIR GUESTS into the tavern of Ildon for a night of spirits and merriment—including a drinking contest, one of the family’s favorite pastimes. The winner shall earn 150 mina for their iron gut and perseverance, and the respect of their peers.

It is with much sorrow that the County of Ildon announces the official passing of MAEVE GREYE-O’ROURKE, the third-eldest child of EÍNÍN O’ROURKE and AURUS GREYE. After contracting a terminal illness, MAEVE had spent her last months wanderlust, exploring the continent of Azuras that she held so dear.

MAEVE, in her final hours, returned to Ildon, to then journey into the Skies. 

GOD embraces her, and we take comfort in the idea that she is now eternally at peace.

A funeral shall be planned and held in the near future.

COMING OF AGE OF LITTLE GREYES

PREFACE

Hark! All of East and West who share in the love and friendship of our youth are cordially invited to celebrate their ascension into adulthood. In the coming year do the sons and daughters of Sir Adrian Greye officially step into their roles of strong men and women of our house. Despite such hardships that highlighted their childhoods, such as war and the scattering of their kind, we finally come together as one family, proud of our blood and history, and commemorate what was once broken as it is mended together again.

ITINERARY

Selection of Epithets

As Greyes grow and are watched over by their elder family members, their actions are judged. Around the ages of sixteen to eighteen, the Head of House may call the parents of the Greye to confer over an appropriate epithet for them. These epithets originate from the virtues outlined in the Code of Greye, and the one that best exemplifies the Greye in question is granted to them as a stylized title. 

Edrica Triathlon

In celebrating new starts upon new lands, guests are invited to partake in a triathlon among the property of Edrica and its surrounding woodlands and river. The race will start on horseback. Participants are to race down the beachfront until they happen upon a gray banner. From there, they will quickly enter boats, and return down the beach via boat race. Lastly, participants will scale nearby building supplies of Edrica to reach the very top, where a token will await the winner in a chest. The participant who collects this token will receive a prize of 500 Mina. First, second, and third place participants shall also win a puppy from Greye’s first litter of Greyehounds.

Tourney of Iron

The very first unofficial title received in the house of Greye was given unto the founder, Aurellius Greye, in a melee tournament. Upon winning every round, his peers deemed him ‘Iron Aurellius’ to which the crowd too began to chant. As a nod to our founder, a melee shall be held in his honor. THE HOUSE OF GREYE STARTS WITH ITS FOUNDER, Aurellius Greye. Hailing from a small village, Aurellius trained in combat from a young age following the death of his parents. His early prowess in battle led him to join a group of mercenaries which restored his village from the bandits and raiders which plagued it—and with that experience under his belt Aurellius left in search of a new life, landing in the Kingdom of Balian, 1999, Age of Mankind.

Aurellius experienced explosive growth from the moment he set foot in Balian. Joining the Regiment of Saint Lothar under Viktor Gotwa, and then Sebastian Eros, and then Achillius D'Arkent, he climbed the ranks and in a matter of years was named second in command. Those who knew of him in his early years can attest to his passion and hunger for greatness—to carve the legacy of his name and house into the history of Aevos. Those early years were indeed marked with glory—brawls won and titles earned, Ologs and demon kings fought, troops led into battle.

The legacy of the House of Greye continued its steady climb as Aurellius furthered his military endeavors, and as the first three of his children took the streets of Balian by storm. When Balian marched to war against the Church and its assembled allies in the War of Crown and Crozier, it was under the command of Aurellius Greye as regent leader of the Regiment. When Balian’s own allies bent knee and still Balian fought what all knew was a losing battle, Aurellius showed exemplary honor and loyalty to his kingdom by leading it into war rather than abandoning post. His family and children fought alongside, and his eldest sons, twins Aurus and Aedric, squired beneath Prince Lothar of Balian for the entirety.

In the meantime Aurellius’ family grew. Following his marriage with Astrid Colborn, Aurellius bore two more children, the first to be born in the new Duchy of Lotharia—constructed in large part by the labor of himself and his heir, Aurus. Here Aurellius was granted the diplomatic role of Legate, delegating the militia to close friend Sir Jean-Clement Vuiller—and the House of Greye was officially granted nobility with the Barony of Velmoore. A Barony became a Viscounty and Aurus Greye soon assumed the position of Magister Gladii, taking the militia from Sir Jean. What followed was a complete revision of the militia under Aurus’ vision, and the House of Greye continued to rise, quickly becoming the most populated of Lotharia's nobles.

Having elevated his House to nobility, guiding it and his kingdom through two wars and the founding of a new nation, Aurellius Greye abdicated to his son Aurus at the age of seventy-four.

CONTENTION ROSE IN LOTHARIA due to lackluster military funding, continuous assault by darkspawn forces, and a lack of communication or action from leadership. Following this, Aurus Greye, Alexandria Vuiller, and several noble Houses of Lotharia spearheaded a coup that upseated the current ruler, Iohannis Basileus. The terms of the coup necessitated only the removal of Iohannis himself from power, allowing for his heir to take his place when she was of age. Iohannis instead migrated to the Empire, leaving Lotharia temporarily without leadership. Thus, it was rebranded the Duchy of Perduran to symbolize the persistence and endurance of its people, and Aedric Greye was elected as its new Duke. Aedric subsequently created the first cadet branch of House Greye, that being the Duchal House of Grisblood, and the Greyes were given the Duchy of Res Avara.

During his short reign of Perduran, Aedric, alongside Adrian Greye, brought an influx of new activity, legislature, and life to the city that had not been previously seen. The consistency in leadership and events brought so much activity to the city that Peter Rovare, the Lord of Beleth, eventually sought out Aedric and presented him a deal—to move the population of Perduran to Southspire, the capital of Beleth, or face execution. Aedric ensured the safe escape of nearby witnesses before refuting Peter’s demands—so Aedric Grisblood was executed in cold blood.

Following this, an immediate departure was made by the House of Greye and Grisblood, bringing with them the House of Drasereth as they settled in Idunia beneath the banner of Ildon and the O’Rourke family—the family of Aurus’ wife, Einin O’Rourke. The Greyes were granted the landed vassal of Edrica, where the family would finally settle and take the time to grieve their losses. With this the Grisblood title was quickly dissolved, allowing its members to return to the House of Greye as their patriarch would have desired.

LANGUAGE AMONGST THE HOUSE OF GREYE owes itself to the family's Balianese roots. Most House members speak with a southern accent reminiscent of late Balian, with common dialects including ‘ai, nen, bona, graza’, and so forth. To a lesser extent, hints of New Marian influence may be found among certain lines and branches of the family.

THERE IS A LACK OF A DISTINCT CULTURAL ORIGIN amongst names given to Greye members. Though some may have Balianese or Ildonian roots, by and large the most common naming trend amongst Greyes is the tradition of A-names. The House is overwhelmingly populated by members of such names; Aurellius, Astrid, Aurus, Aedric, Avarine, Adrian, Aelyn, Aurelian, and so forth. That is not to say outliers don't exist— such as Cillian, Constance, Nikitus, et cetera.

Too, are honor names a common tradition among Greyes. These names stem from family members or close friends rather than historical figures—such as Yelizaveta or Johanna amongst girls, and Aurellius, Aedric, or Petyr amongst boys. These names are given most often as middle names. Honor names as first names have been exceptionally rare amongst the Greyes, and most Greyes are the first of their name.

THE STRUCTURE OF HOUSE GREYE is a collaborative one, formed by the High Council of Greye. Split into two parts, the Inner Council and the Outer Council, seats on the council are highly specialized and may be given to Greyes, or close family friends and allies alike. 

The Inner Council, given to only those bearing the Greye name, is a small assembly of five roles, including the Head of House. These roles include the Seneschal or right hand of the Head of House, the Master of Arms, the Warden of Trade, and the Voice of the Blood (traditionally held by adoptees). Prior Head of Houses are given the honorary title ‘Pater Patriae’, meaning Father of the Fatherland, and may be included in Inner Council meetings to share their wisdom and advice, though may have different voting capacities. Inner Council members are selected by the Head of House and voted into place by the rest of the existing council.

The Outer Council has a variety of flexible positions that may be given to Greye members, or close friends and allies. This Council may voice their opinions on current issues and help to maintain the structural integrity of the House to a lesser extent. 

House Greye operates through succession by an absolute meritocracy—that is succession by merit, regardless of gender. The current Head of House will choose an heir, typically their firstborn, and will raise and teach them as such. However, that heir may lose their heirship if they do not perform to the expected standards of the role or are not well-connected with the family.

At that point, by vote of the Inner Council, the heir may be removed and a new heir voted into place. This same process of impeachment applies to the Head of House. If the Head of House becomes extremely absent, endangers the House, or consistently fails to perform their duties, the Inner Council may hold a vote to impeach them by a two-thirds majority. The Seneschal may then temporarily take over until a new Head of House is elected or the current heir comes of age.

THOUGH A NOBLE FAMILY, a sentiment held amongst the Greyes is remembering where they came from—namely, a common house which only in recent decades has lifted itself to nobility. As such, most Greyes do not partake in the strict etiquette or social intricacies of many other noble Houses. Commoners or other Houses are welcomed to sit along the table as any other, and are treated as family. Greyes intermingle with common society and rarely view themselves as being above others in status.

Along those lines, those who are beloved among the Greyes may find themselves styled as ‘unofficial Greyes’. However, those who wish to be officially inducted into the family may undergo a process to become a Greye themselves. This involves a trial period of interaction amongst the family which lasts five years, during which they must show consistent interaction, relationship-building, and assimilation alongside the House culture and its members. Following the trial period, the Inner Council convenes to vote the new member into the House, or deny their request, passing on a simple majority. 

If the Council finds a member suitable to join the ranks of Greye, the prospective member will be styled or titled ‘of Greye’, rather than ‘Greye’ directly, to denote their status—though they will be considered as family. Too, they will be ‘baptised’ in the fashion of the Amathine tradition as detailed further below, a cherished induction into the family as a new member. 

If the Council does not find the member to be suitable to join the ranks of Greye, the member may be afforded another trial period of five years to reattempt assimilation and may be given an additional task or quest by the Inner Council, after which their induction is again voted on. In any case of failing to be inducted, a prospective member may generally still be allowed to reside in Edrica if they already possess housing there. They are simply not afforded the name and honorary styling.

MOST GREYES SHARE EXTREME PHYSICAL SIMILARITIES, such that they can be recognized as a Greye by appearance alone. These Greyes are often born with thick black hair, slate-blue or grey eyes, and pale skin despite the southern roots of the family—though others, likewise, tan quickly. Second most common to the Greyes is blonde hair, owing to the first and second matriarchs of the House, Astrid Greye and Einin Greye-O’Rourke. Though black and blonde hair are by and large most common to the house, some odd members bear ginger curls or a brunette mane.

Often tall and athletic, many Greyes have earned muscle and callouses either by their combative practices or industrial work. Most Greye men are broad-shouldered and though Greye women have historically leaned on the shorter side, they are rarely lacking in strength. 

The garb of Greyes are not necessarily what one might expect of a noble family, as lavish robes are not prioritized. Most Greyes, rather, prefer sturdy clothing made often of wools, leathers, or such—clothes which are easier to move or fight in. To that extent, some Greyes almost exclusively don their House armor in public. Jewelry of all kinds, including jewelry fashioned of bones, are often worn by family members. Many Greye men wear earrings alongside the women of the family.

EVERY GREYE STRIVES BY A MORAL OR HONOR CODE. Though these codes are often unique to the individual, pride and honor, whether traditional or personal, is oft said to be the lifeblood of a Greye. Too do Greyes have a propensity of extreme loyalty to those they serve, given they are just and fair. Once the goodwill of a Greye has been earned, it is hard to shake, and the importance of connections and relationships is stressed upon young Greyes. That said, most Greyes are not afraid to act out in the face of what they feel to be unjust or selfish behavior.

A sentiment that has slowly grown among the House is that of ‘light Greyes’ and ‘dark Greyes’. Light Greyes are often those who hold traditional honor and duty in high regard. They may be slower to act, humble and courteous in their social spheres, or designated the ‘goody-two-shoes’ of the family. Dark Greyes, meanwhile, are often those who deign towards their own, more personal code of honor. They are swift of action, take their pride and transgresses against it seriously, and may display a more carefree or even mischievous nature.

A HOUSE OF STRONG MARTIAL PROWESS, a military career is by and large the most common amongst members of House Greye. Most Greyes are taught to wield a blade from a young age, whether they chose it as their profession or not, and Greyes have historically had a strong presence in their local militaries and armies, wherever those may be. With the legacy begun by Aurellius Greye, House members are often a fearsome presence on the battlefield.

Second most common is diplomacy. Greyes are a well-connected House, and family members often grow a vast network from a young age—people they are loyal to to the highest extreme. Many are suited for diplomatic roles given their often charismatic nature or persistence.

Secondary trades of the family include smithing and medicine, both of which have been commonly practised by family members. Smithing, both of weapons, trinkets, and grilles, has been practised by members such as Aedric, Talo, and Adrian Greye, whilst medicine has been practised by members such as Einin Greye-O’Rourke, Aurelian Greye, and Aelyn Greye. Both are respected routes for House members to pursue. Some Greyes also chose to pursue secondary or hobby trades, such as carpentry.

THOUGH THE PERSONAL MORAL CODES of each Greye are often complex and unique, Greyes likewise operate under a unique set of virtues aimed to guide and judge behaviors of House members. A Greye may strive towards one particular of the virtues, or aim to be a well-rounded member who takes a little from each. Alongside what their personal codes and what their faith requires of them, these virtues are a cornerstone of House Greye’s philosophy.

Clementia 

Definition: The quality of mercy, compassion, and forgiveness

Practical Application: To display clementia may look like consistently affording grace for transgressions made; forgiveness and discarding of grudges; offering second and third chances; persistent kindness and wholesomeness in the face of adversity; speaking in gentleness rather than anger; a spirit of goodness and well wishes for others.

Concordia 

Definition: The quality of harmony, peacekeeping, and cooperation

Practical Application: To display concordia may look like mediation between warring groups; striving for peace and cooperation in personal life and amongst others; prioritization of the greater good above petty squabbles; persistent social work and efforts to bring unity; leading by example in teamwork.

Dignitus 

Definition: The quality of honor, self pride, and charisma

Practical Application: To display dignitus may look like a preoccupation with honor or identity, self image, and/or worth; distinctiveness from peers; a strong sense of self; social excellence and reputation; confidence and charisma; maintenance of public image; reliability and loyalty. 

Firmitas 

Definition: The quality of endurance, strength of mind, and resolve

Practical application: To display firmitas may look like strong determination; refusal to cede or give up despite the odds; finding the strength to keep going in the face of adversity; picking oneself up and trying again after falling; resilience; pushing oneself or others to find their inner strength; encouragement of others.

Industria 

Definition: The quality of hard work, skill, and ingenuity

Practical application: To display industria may look like; exemplary work and service within the family; innovations in their chosen field; a drive or passion for work; an extreme interest or exploration of a specific trade or specialty; mastery of a given subject; ability to teach that subject to others.

Pietas 

Definition: The quality of duty, loyalty, and devotion. 

Practical application: To display pietas may look like; sacrifice of oneself for the greater good of others; devotion to a cause or purpose; a strong desire to fulfill one’s duties and expectations; dedication to tasks given; humility in social etiquette; prioritization of obligations over personal desires or happiness.

Prudentia 

Definition: The quality of wisdom, judgement, and self control. 

Practical application: To display prudentia may look like; bearing an ‘old soul’ from a young age; wisdom and a lack of impulse in decision making; foresight and strong logical reasoning; ability to learn from mistakes and past events; discernment and discipline; imbuing wisdom unto others.

Veritas

Definition: The quality of truthfulness, honesty, and sincerity. 

Practical application: To display veritas may look like; truthfulness and honesty in admitting mistakes; prioritization of honest dealings over personal gain or emotion; a commitment to uncovering truth or justice; sincerity of word and actions; a strong distaste for lies or falsities; courage in correcting misinformation or dishonesty.

Virtus

Definition: The quality of courage, valor, and excellence. 

Practical application: To display virtus may look like; extreme displays of courage and bravery; passion to overcome challenges laid before oneself; desire to prove oneself, or a hunger for greatness; excellence in morality and action; an outstanding reputation; defense of those who cannot defend themselves.

THOUGH DISTINCT IN THE APPEARANCE and personalities of its family members, the House of Greye is also distinct by the themes and motifs it embodies. The Greye coat of arms displays a knight upon horseback with a hound dog in each corner, writ in shades of greys and blues; the knight symbolizing the Greye’s martial prowess; its steed represents the trading presence of the Greyes in particular regards to their horse breeding and selling; and the four hound dogs represent the children of Aurellius Greye.

It follows naturally that the color of House Greye is, primarily, grey—in various shades, though typically darker. The secondary color of the house is a deep grey-blue with undertones of teal. These colors are prominently featured in the armor of House Greye. Greye armor is typically of full medium plate, bearing a blue sash across the side. There are two variations of Greye armor—a version of lighter grey and a vibrant sash of blue, open for use to the entirety of the family; and a version of darker grey, accompanied by that signature teal which marks the House’s coat of arms, reserved only for those in positions of Greye leadership.

THE MOTIFS OF GREYE commonly include wolves and hounds. Though wolves were an intentional motif upon conception of the House in its early days, the theme of ‘hounds’ was bestowed upon the very first generation of Greye children, setting a precedent for the generations to come after. Those first children were affectionately termed ‘greyehounds’ as they swarmed the streets of Balian and pestered their peers with affectionate persistence. 

To that extent, hounds and dogs are common pets amongst the Greyes.

The Amathine 

[A Coming of Age Tradition]

A tradition that originates from the late Johanna Henriette Vuiller shortly before the fall of Balian. Johanna would bring the children of Balian to the then-abandoned coves of Amathine where she would guide them atop the cliffs and toss them into the river below—a rite of passage for many Balian youth. Though not a Greye-specific tradition, it is one that has been carried on by the Greye family in her memory. It is often enacted upon Greye children before they enter their teenage years, ushering them into this time-honored tradition of their family, and reminding them of the roots, people, and history from which they come.

Epithets 

[A Coming of Age Tradition]

As Greyes grow and are watched over by their elder family members, their actions are judged. Typically around the ages of sixteen to eighteen, the Head of House may call the parents of the Greye to confer over an appropriate epithet for them. These epithets originate from the virtues outlined in the Code of Greye, and the one that best exemplifies the Greye in question is granted to them as a stylized title. A Greye who has exemplified hard work may be given the epithet ‘Industria’ or ‘Industrias’, whereas a Greye who has exemplified mercy may be given the epithet ‘Clementia’ or ‘Clementia’. These Greyes may be styled in manners such as ‘Adrian the Firmatus’, or used as a second or middle name, as in ‘Aurus Pietas Greye’, or simply ‘Aurus Pietas’. Alternatively, these epithets can be given or changed after major life events at the discretion of the Head of House. As there are a limited number of virtues that these names are drawn from, Greyes can find camaraderie in others of their family that share the same epithet.

The complete list of Greye epithets are as follows: Clementia or Clementius; Concordia or Concordius; Dignita or Dignitus; Firmita or Firmitas; Industria or Industrias; Pieta or Pietas; Prudentia or Prudentius; Verita or Veritas; or Virta or Virtus.

Gifting of the Knot

[A Courting Tradition]

When expressing intent to court another, it is common for members of Greye to craft and present their newfound partner with a token of braided leather, metal, or cloth. These are often embedded with the family crest or, more often, a meaningful inscription or message. These tokens, be they bracelets, necklaces, or other works of craftsmanship, may be worn as a symbol of commitment for the duration of the relationship or until marriage.

Marriage Trials

[A Marriage Tradition]

Marriages must be brought before the Head of House, who will consider the couple and assign them a personalized task to be completed before the marriage is approved. These tasks are uniquely altered to the personalities, dynamics, and challenges of each couple. An example of a trial that may be given is a month-long pilgrimage into a secluded area of wilderness, for the duration of which the couple must live and work together to ensure they can withstand the tests of married life together in harmony.

Grilles

[Common Practises]

Members of House Greye are often found carrying or wearing grilles made by the smiths of the family. These flashy dental wear may be made of slayersteel, aurum, or other metals at the request of the Greyes wearing them—a tradition perpetuated by Adrian and Talo Greye as the first consistent smiths and wearers of the grilles in question.

Bone Jewelry & Accessories

[Common Practises]

What might be considered a rather morbid practice, some select members of House Greye have made a habit of collecting and utilizing bones via jewelry or other accessories. These bones could be those of darkspawn, as practised and popularized by Adrian Greye, or those of fallen adversaries, as practised and popularized by Aurelian Greye. These bones may also be used in the making of weaponry.

Adoption

[Common Practises]

Virtually every generation of the current Greye lineage has included adopted family members. Talo Greye was adopted as the third and eldest son of Aurellius Greye. Aurus Greye partook in the adoption of the late Constance Greye-O’Rourke, and Adrian Greye adopted two elven children. This tradition, however, does not only extend to children. As a House of exceptional loyalty, Greyes have historically created relationships with many who went on to become adoptive parental figures, aunts, uncles, or siblings.

Greye Journals

[Common Practises]

Common tradition dictates that Greyes are given a journal as soon as they are old enough to read and write. This journal may be used for a variety of purposes—to recall events, catalogue personal anecdotes, the wise words of others, and so forth. These journals are to be kept and used throughout the course of the Greyes life, until their eventual death—at which point it is safeguarded within the Greye archives along the journals of other family members, and read out of during funeral rites.

Sign Language

[Common Practises]

A tradition started in honor of Talo Greye and Avarine Greye, of the very first generation of Greye children. Both endured a brief period of muteness, during which their family adjusted by learning sign language to communicate. Ever since, it has been widely taught and learned amongst the Greyes, even after Talo and Avarine found their voices—most Greyes learn it as a second language, using it to communicate during diplomatic events, rites of passage, and even upon the field of battle.

Vigil of Rememberance

[Death Rite]

When a member of House Greye passes on, a night long vigil is held amongst the family. During this vigil the Greye’s journal is retrieved and read aloud in parts, reflecting their struggles, victories, and stories in life. At the end of this trial the bodies are cremated and scattered into the ocean, and the journal is sealed within the Greye archives alongside those of others who have passed.

Peace in the Winds

[Death Rite]

Many Greyes hold the belief that loved ones who have passed on may manifest themselves in the wind, or may be spoken to through it. As such it’s not uncommon to find Greyes speaking into the wind, or for common places of quiet reflection and mourning to be held on cliffsides, ports, or other places where strong winds are common or may easily be felt.

For the refurbishing of a tavern in Ildon, this guild takes up the mantle of the travelling circus, popular in Almaris! As such, many of the old members are invited to join and share their talents with the world once more as we set up a travelling caravan to tour the world. 

Ranks of Teaching and Learning:

1. Aspiring Creative

Our most valued students who have taken the leap to join our program of talented individuals ready to hone their skills! Anyone from simply a spirited craftsman to a jovial player of instruments. 

2. Prefect Student

Students who have proven themselves capable members of the agency and shown that they are ready to tutor and bounce ideas off of their peers. Prefects will teach and guide Aspiring Creatives to reach their level, and encourage them to attend classes! They are responsible for keeping track of a specific group of students within the same niche as them. Say, a painter prefect will moderate a group of painters, a musician a group of musicians and so on. 

3. Savant Creator

A prefect student who has proven themselves both able to help their peers, attend classes, and excel in their field of work. These are chosen by Alumni Professors and a board of Bardic Masters to gain their savant marigold pin. Their tasks ascend to teaching their peers in small curated sessions and demonstrations coordinated with Professors to further enrich learning with a specific skill of theirs. They are also allowed to put on performances impromptu at any of the marked and documented hot-spots for our performing arts!

4. Bardic Master

Our truly exceptional students will be chosen out of excellence to take a performative assessment to prove their bardic and performative capabilities. This includes their ability to gain the favor of a crowd, and create resonance with the people.

The setting sun.. 

Is that how long she had been sitting here? The sun had shone and the day had been bright when she first took a seat on the hilltops surrounding Ildon.

It must have been hours, then…

A glance cast rightways toward the settlement, and then ahead to the looming island that housed the Idunian capital. What, really, was this place? Was this really going to be home now? It felt continents away from what she was used to. Perduran… What a place it had been. 

She did not know the way it came to be. Its history, its origins. She didn’t even, really, get to know why her father had been its leader. He had promised her lessons on history, academics, administration, leadership..

Leadership.. That had been her purpose- her goal. She was going to inherit Perduran from her father, Aedric, and at such an age- had only grand and brilliant plans for her tenure. Street parties, painting days, festivals that lasted months. Honestly- what else is there to leading a settlement?...

Who knew the danger that lurked within the walls of Man and Humanity. You think the war is the only thing you have to worry about?

A breeze crept through the woodland behind. Branches rustled, grass danced to the melody and just for a moment, the youth was certain that she was not alone.

“Pap?” Of course, the fear of her father actually answering would be much, much greater than that of suspect. She knew he was gone- knew there would be no sudden, dramatic return from within the forest and yet.. her uncle Aurus had instilled in her the belief that no matter what, her father would hear her.

“Pap..” the youth spoke again, comforted a second time as the breeze continued its gentle pass through. “Uncle Aurus said that you are always here, just in the wind, is that true?”

“I sit outside some days and sing to you, do you like it?”

“Mam abandoned us..” Ah, there it was. The budding topic, the heartbreaking subject. Normally, a child might seek the comfort of their parents for such a moment but.. Who do you turn to, when one parent is no more and one is the cause? 

From her satchel did the girl produce a soft toy. A sheep- some fluffy thing that had grown somewhat dirty since she received it. It had been well loved, thus far. Within its collar sat a rolled up piece of paper. Something which had, as well, seen better days. “Aunty Einin gave me this,” the youth held the toy aloft and for a split second, the wind seemed to examine it. The breeze caused the paper to flutter, and the girl smiled.

“I kept the letter you sent me last. I read it all the time.”

“Mam said.. You would want me to be Duchess of Perduran. But I do not think so.”

“Uncle Aurus said you never wanted to stop being a Greye….”

“...Mam does not know I am here.” The admission was offered to the wind once more. A secret she shared only to it. “We had a fight, I was rude to her-” briefly did the youth pause as if she waited to be scolded for her admission. “-And then I walked away. I did not go back to Perduran- I went to the keep. Now, I am here.”

“I am sorry, Pap.” Tightly did the youth hold the toy to her chest. “For everything. Mam took me to a meeting about Perduran. I think she leads it, now. In your place. But why would she? Should she not want to be with us, here?”

“They murdered you. Everyone is angry, I can tell, at Mam for staying behind.”

The sun fell further behind the wall of mountains across the river and so the breeze began to subside. Evening began to creep, and a chill fell over the hilltop. But there was one last breath, one last billowing gust that rippled through the countryside. Then it was gone.

“Good night, Pap,” the youth smiled into the darkened sky. 

“I might forgive Mam one day. Maybe if she comes to live here with us.”

“But until then, Pap, do not be mad at me for not talking to her, please.”

There was no response from the wind, this time around. It had all fallen silent, eerie almost now that nothing replied to her pleas.

A gentle sigh escaped the youth as she pulled herself to stand, dress littered with leafy foliage and dirt but, it mattered not. This was her ritual, now. Every few days- this exact spot. It helped, at least she believed, to process the grief and loss of both parents even though one was still alive.

So she made her way back home.

“I will talk to you in a few days, Pap. I love you.”

The Cennasaí of the Elendâri is a Knight chosen for their exceptional skill, their unwavering commitment to their Kingdom, their people, and GOD above. Bestowed upon them are the responsibilities of leading the Levy, executing the faithful orders of the Lord and Lady O’Rourke’s, and remaining everso loyal to the Elendâri. They are to serve as the model of the good soldier, a knight of unshakable perseverance and obedience, the enforcers of justice in the realm.

KNIGHTS OF THE GREEN HAVEN

The Knights of Ildon, or ‘Knights of the Green Haven’ are the sworn protectors of the Fiefdom. Well-skilled and memorized in the Code of Chivalry, the Knights of the Green Haven are trained swordsmen, archers, and combaters, tasked with training their squires, bestowing their knowledge and wisdom. The Knights of Ildon are expected to serve Numenost, Ildon, and GOD to the very best of their abilities.

These soldiers, the Sáirsnt, are those who are in charge of keeping order and protecting the folk of Ildon firstly. Smaller, yet meaningful tasks are given to the Serjeants of Ildon, to be done with dignity and pride. The Serjeants are aspirants to become greater, to become their most honorable selves. They represent what the Captaen’s strive to achieve.

Tiarna Captaens are aspirants striving to join the ranks of Sáirsnt, following in the loyal footsteps of their higher-ups. Completing tasks for Ildon, training to protect the realm, is the feat born onto the Captaen. Yet, in need of experience, fresh out of their squireships and expected to train and grow with time. 

DALTAÍ 

SQUIRES & FOOTMEN

Aspirants of Knighthood and all things noble, Daltaí are taken in by a Knight of Ildon by their fourteenth nameday, should they wish to pursue a higher rank in the Elendâri. Squires are optimistic, eager to prove themselves as deserving, loyal, and trustworthy to their peers.

GUARDS

Tasked with protecting, guarding, and providing for those who seek the haven of Ildon, Guards are easily the most popular around Ildon. Given the responsibilities of protecting the commonfolk, standing guard, patrolling the streets and keeping a watchful eye out for signs of lurking evil and criminals to poach.

RECRUITS

Yet to prove themselves, Recruits are exposed to religious and physical trainings, to prepare themselves for the long road of growth ahead. Recruits do not last in this stage for long, as those who truly desire a future in Knighthood will be eager to prove themselves and will succeed in showing their skills quickly.
