✠ HEED, LEAL SONS OF HOREN;

The Crownlands of the Empire are the jewel of humanity. It is here that etiquette stands as the highest expression of civilization itself; thus, as the heart of the Empire and all of Man, the Crownlands will henceforth set the standard by which all other regions are measured. The customs of the Celosian Court are refined, distinguishing themselves from the practices of lesser courts and distinct subcultures. To conduct oneself properly in the Crownlands is to uphold both one’s personal dignity and the honor the Empire demands. Therefore, by decree of the Empress of Azuras, her court shall uphold the strictest guidelines set forth herein.

✠ NOBLE ADDRESSMENTS

The proper addressment of nobility establishes the foundation of all courtly conduct. If one is uncertain of another’s titles, it is acceptable to address them as “My Lord” or “My Lady” until otherwise corrected or introduced properly. Courtiers are duly expected to state their full name and titles so that the present company may observe the appropriate level of respect. Gestures of deference must reflect rank; bows and curtsies should deepen and be held at a length in accordance with with the status of the individuals being addressed.

The following list serves as the proper guidelines by which members of the Imperial nobility and government are to be addressed within the courts of the Crownlands. All courtiers should familiarize themselves with these forms of addressment and make use of them accordingly in proper company.

✠ THE EMPEROR AND EMPRESS

The Emperor and Empress of Azuras are to be referred to in oration as His or Her Imperial Majesty. In direct address, one ought to use “Your Imperial Majesty,” though the shortened “Your Majesty” may be employed in less formal circumstances.

✠ IMPERIAL PRINCES AND PRINCESSES

Imperial Princes and Princesses are to be addressed as “Your Imperial Highness” and are referred to as “His Imperial Highness,” or “Her Imperial Highness,” though “My Prince” or “My Princess” may be used in casual conversation. Alternatively, informal settings may also permit the use of “Your Highness.”

✠ MEMBERS OF THE IMPERIAL PRIVY COUNCIL

Members of the Imperial Privy Council are regarded as the Emperor’s most trusted advisors. By virtue of their esteemed station, they are afforded the addressment of “Your Imperial Excellency” and are styled as “His Imperial Excellency” or “Her Imperial Excellency.”

✠ MEMBERS OF THE IMPERIAL CHANCELLERY

Those of the Imperial Chancellery are the individuals afforded the privilege of serving in close proximity to the Imperial Archchancellor, affording them the styling of “His Excellency” or “Her Excellency.” They are to be addressed as “Your Excellency” directly.

✠ ARCHDUKES AND ARCHDUCHESSES

Archdukes and Archduchesses are styled as "His Serene Highness," or "Her Serene Highness," and are afforded the addressment of "Your Serene Highness," though "Your Highness," "My Lord," or "My Lady" may suffice in less formal courtly settings.

✠ PRINCES AND PRINCESSES

Princes and Princesses of Imperial principalities are granted the styling of “His Highness” or “Her Highness,” and are directly addressed as “Your Highness,” although “My Lord” or “My Lady” are deemed socially acceptable within informal settings. In addition, peers of Princely Houses may choose to style themselves as "His/Her Serene Highness."

✠ DUKES AND DUCHESSES

Rulers of ducal vassals are to be addressed as “Your Grace” and referred to as “His Grace” or “Her Grace” in oration. Additionally, “My Lord” or “My Lady” remain acceptable alternatives following an initial greeting and may be used freely outside of courtly settings.

✠ MARGRAVES AND MARGRAVINES

In oration, Margraves and Margravines are styled as “The Most Honorable, His Lordship,” or “The Most Honorable, Her Ladyship.” Directly, they are addressed as “Your Lordship” or “Your Ladyship,” and “My Lord” or “My Lady.”

✠ COUNTS AND COUNTESSES

Counts and Countesses are styled as “The Right Honorable, His Lordship” or “The Right Honorable, Her Ladyship.” They are to be addressed directly as “Your Lordship” or “Your Ladyship,” with “My Lord” or “My Lady” serving as an appropriate option of addressment.

✠ VISCOUNTS AND VISCOUNTESSES

Leaders of viscomital fiefdoms are styled as “The Honorable, His Lordship” or “The Honorable, Her Ladyship.” In direct address, one ought to use “Your Lordship” or “Your Ladyship,” though “My Lord” and “My Lady” are also permissible.

✠ BARONS AND BARONESSES

Peers bearing baronial status are referred to as “His Lordship” or “Her Ladyship.” When speaking directly, one shall use “Your Lordship” or “Your Ladyship,” with “My Lord” and “My Lady” remaining the standard form of address outside initial greetings.

✠ COURTLY CONVERSATION

Conversation within the Crownlands is regarded as an art of great discipline. When individuals are not yet acquainted, they must first seek to formally introduce themselves by name and title before engaging in meaningful discourse within a courtly setting.

Upon the initial greeting, men are expected to bow and women to curtsy in accordance with rank and standing relative to Imperial standards of nobility. Those of lower standing must exercise humility in speech, refraining from boasting or drawing undue attention to their accomplishments unless directly prompted, taking care not to outshine their superiors. Conversely, those of higher station are expected to conduct themselves with grace, avoiding condescension and ill-repute in conversation with those of lesser rank.

Arms should not be crossed in the presence of others, as it conveys arrogance and disregard. Moreover, one must be mindful of when to speak and when silence is required in the presence of high-ranking nobility. Interruptions, excessive gestures, and disruptive behaviors are to be avoided by courtiers, for such is deemed improper and viewed most unfavorably by the Imperial court.

Furthermore, both married and unmarried individuals are expected to uphold standards of piety and propriety alike, with married persons embodying dignity and restraint, and unmarried individuals avoiding conduct that might invite scandal or diminish their standing in the eyes of their fellow courtiers.

✠ TABLE MANNERS

Dining within the Crownlands is distinguished by its rigid nature and strict adherence to propriety. Notably, the seat at the head of the table is reserved for the individual of highest rank, and all others are arranged according to status, with proximity to the head reflecting prestige. Should seating be limited, those of lower rank are expected to yield their place to those of higher standing, while in cases of equal rank, precedence is granted to the elder.

No guest may be seated before the highest-ranking individual has taken their place, and the meal itself begins only once the tablehead has started to eat, concluding when they have set their utensils down. Throughout the meal, proper posture must be maintained, elbows kept off the table, and unnecessary movement or commotion avoided. Should a ruling liege enter the room, all present are expected to rise and offer a greeting in accordance with their status.

In keeping with Imperial tradition, diners should leave a small portion of food upon their plate, to be gathered and distributed among the poor following the feast. Exceptions to these customs may be granted, but only at the discretion of the present tablehead.

✠ THE DUTIES OF THE HOST

To host within the Crownlands is to embody the grace and dignity expected of Imperial nobility; thus, a host is expected to personally greet and honor esteemed guests upon their arrival whenever time permits, particularly those of high station, and ensure that each individual is acknowledged and addressed in accordance with their rank and title.

Careful consideration must be exercised in seating, conversations, and accommodations so that no guest of notable standing is slighted through neglect or poor placement. The host additionally bears the responsibility of maintaining propriety amongst those assembled, intervening discreetly if tensions or disputes should arise in the midst of pleasant or courtly gatherings.

The customs and expectations set forth herein exist to preserve the dignity and refinement that is expected of all Imperial nobility, especially within the Crownlands. Through proper conduct and disciplined speech, the Celosian Court of the Imperial Crownlands distinguish themselves as the highest example of civilization across humanity and the continent alike.

In celebration of fellowship and the bonds that unite Our Imperium as one, a Tavern Night shall be hosted under Imperial sanction. The Ladies’ Tea | at 4 pm EST
In the Month of Dragon’s Roar, Her Imperial Majesty, Valentiná of Asturias calls upon the ladies of the Empire to join her, once more, for a ladies’ tea. The gentlemen, though also welcome, are asked to be mindful of the conversations had at the table. Her Majesty shall prepare her favoured brew alongside an assortment of sandwiches and pastries to enjoy as gentle conversation ensues.

The Month of Horen’s Calling | Wednesday, April 8th

The Feast | at 4 pm EST
Within the resplendent halls of the Celosian Palace, tables shall be laid with the finest delicacies the Empire has to offer; roasted game, honeyed breads, and fruits of both field and orchard. The gathering shall be one of great revelry and unity, symbolizing Imperial peace and prosperity, and the evening will bear witness to music, splendor, and pleasant conversation.

The Month of Owyn’s Light | Thursday, April 9th

Church Service | at 4 pm EST
In preparation for the forthcoming reign of the Imperial Coupling, Priests of the Faith will hold a sacred service for all faithful citizenry of the Imperium. The day is appointed not only to bear witness to devotion and prayer, but for the sake of personal reflection and cleansing alike. All are welcome to partake in confession, seek absolution, and purify their hearts, so that they might enter the reign of Marcus I and Valentina of Asturias renewed and unburdened by sin.

The Market Festival | at 4 pm EST
For the duration of this splendid occasion, the streets of Rittersburg shall be lined with a vibrant array of stalls and carts. Merchants from across Azuras are beckoned to display their finest wares before the citizens of the Empire. All are invited to partake in trading, bartering, and the abundant wealth of the Empire.

The Month of Aurelian’s Glory| Saturday, April 11th

The Imperial Coronation | at 5 pm EST
An Imperial Coronation is a solemn and sacred Ceremony, unto which all grandiose yields due reverence. Upon the first eve of Aurelian’s Glory, Emperor Marcus and Empress Valentina shall be crowned in the same ancient manner as the Emperors of yore had. Henceforth, the Imperial Pair summons each vassal and every subject of the Empire – be they of high birth or humble station – to assemble within the Celosian throneroom to bear witness as they speak their vows before GOD and the Imperium eternal.

Upon the conclusion of these sacred oaths, His Holiness, Caius II, shall set the Crown of the Emperor and the Crown of the Empress-consort upon their heads, thereby concluding the holy rite and sealing their divine investiture. Thereafter, the newly-crowned Emperor and Empress shall command their vassals to swear fealty anew beneath the gaze of GOD and the Imperial Court.

The Month of Sun’s Smile | Sunday, April 12th

The Coronation Tournament | at 4 pm EST
Following the coronation, all attendees are invited to join Us upon the grand palatial tournament grounds for the fabled Coronation Tournament of Emperor Marcus I. Within this celebration of martial prowess, a joust, melee, and Silasian boat fight will be held in a display of due merriment. The rules of each contest shall be proclaimed prior to commencement of each contest. Victors of each event will be awarded a sum of five hundred Imperial Farthings.

Ball of Springtide | at 6 pm EST
To conclude the celebrations of Our Imperial ascension, We do cordially extend an invitation for all citizens to gather within the Celosian Palace’s ballroom. Attendees are encouraged to adorn themselves in spring-themed colours, accompanied by wreaths of blooming flora, to honor the coming of Springtide. Citizens, be the breath of spring itself; be the gentle creatures of the forest upon its wake; be the bees that come abuzz with the return of warmth and light; We only ask that you embrace creativity in your attire, so that the spirit of the season be reflected in your adornments.

THOSE ASPIRING TO WARDSHIP must be between the ages of five and eighteen, and shall, in their tenure, be instructed in a breadth of arts befitting their station. Among these are the courtesies of courtly etiquette, the study of our Imperium’s historical archives, basic literacy, and music. Beyond this, wards may find themselves guided in poise, rhetoric, conduct, and the virtues expected of those who keep company in noble circles.

Long have the Sons of Horen quarrelled with the Sons of Urguan and Krug. To the surprise of none, however, Man has triumphed over its dwarven and orcish foes. With such a victory acquired, the time has come for the realm to set aside its arms and rejoice. Therefore, by decree of the Celosian Court, all Imperial citizens and allies shall partake in a festival of great merriment – a noble Victor’s Promenade – filled with dancing, feasting, sport, and revelry within the fair Imperial capital that will span over the course of three months. Soldiers and knights alike will be honored upon each appointed evening of the festivities.

THE POST-NUPTIAL FESTIVIES

FOLLOWING THE SACRED CEREMONY, all in attendance are invited to partake in a series of post-nuptial festivities hosted by the newlyweds. Prizes shall be allocated to victors accordingly at the conclusion of each event.

Left-over foodstuffs from these festivities shall be donated to those who cannot afford to eat in trying times such as these. To facilitate the distribution of these goods, Ser Caspian and Princess Marcella have both offered ample coin to couriers so that they may deliver these parcels across Imperial lands with ease.

In accordance with courtly etiquette, all Imperial Nobility in attendance are encouraged to don their finest attire in the presence of House Horen and their honored champions. The victors of the previous day’s Tourney are heavily encouraged to don their laurel, in order to display their triumph.

The Princess was attended by the good Court Alchemist, Lady Manon, who ensured that both mother and child were well. Princess Joan, Princess Lecelina and Lady Vivienne Devereux kept the Crown Princess company and were of support to her. The child, a son, is found to be most healthy and extraordinarily strong, albeit extremely plump.

Princess Valentina, though wearied by her labors, is sound of body and mind, and thus expected to make a swift recovery after a short period of rest. The Imperial Household calls upon all faithful subjects of the Empire to keep mother and son in their prayers for the coming days.

There they were again, amidst a widening circle of flames stood a tall man, raven-haired, his eyes catching the firelight in shades of verdant green. His sword was already drawn, its arc sure and unyielding as he struck down the shadows that lunged toward him; shapes of darkness clawing at the air, all intent on the obscure figure that cowered just a short distance behind the man.

The second presence remained forever obscured, a face blurred beyond recognition, or perhaps absent altogether, Valentiná could never remember. No matter how much she strained her eyesight, she could not tell who these people were. Yet, they stirred something unsettlingly familiar in her.

A recognition that brushed the very edge of reality, but refused to be named. She had seen them before, she was certain of it.

But where? And who are they?

His blade never faltered, each strike found its mark, driving those shadows back again and again. Valentiná tried to call out to him, once, twice, it did not matter. Her voice could not tear itself from her chest; they would not hear her.

The darkness pressed closer as the flames climbed higher around the duo, crackling and roaring until the heat became unbearable, even from a distance.

What would it be like to stand within those flames?

They would burn if she did nothing. She had to reach them. Yet, when she tried to step forward, the smoke thickened, making her eyes tear up, clawing at her lungs.

Each breath scorched her throat, each step faltered. She could not advance, could not draw near enough to even catch at the hem of their billowing cloaks, to leave any mark of her presence at all. The world grew dim as the smoke swallowed the fire.

The figures, the fight itself, all were soon lost to shadow.

Valentiná jolted awake in the stillness of the princely apartments, untouched by flame or soot, yet her throat ached as though she had been screaming. Her breath was rampant and heavy, her heart still hammering heavily within her chest. For a moment, she thought, she would awaken in the heat. Beads of sweat had formed pearls at her forehead as she assured herself that she was safe, in her bed.

The echo of that recurring dream lingered heavily upon her chest, even as the good servant Ysawynn entered. She pulled the burgundy coloured curtains open and served Valentiná with a hearty breakfast. All Valentiná could do was to move the poached eggs from one edge of the plate to the other, utterly lost in thought. How long would it be until this dream left her alone? Did it mean anything? Did it concern her sons?

Was she going insane?

When her husband came to visit mid-morning, he looked at her with some grave concern, an expression mirroring the one he had given her when they had their first son, back when she had been on the brink of death’s door.

He found some reassurance in the faint hint of a smile she bore as that infant lay wrapped in purples, within her arms. That smile, she couldn't manage for their first son for a few days after he had been born. The Crown Princess hadn’t noticed her husband lingering at the doorway, still humming some old Asturian hymn to the babe; one she remembered from the earliest days of her childhood.

… Valentina.

How beautiful, how peaceful the baby looked. So different from their older son, now that he was a little older. Whilst Caius was a more solemn child, Hannibal hardly ever seemed to cry. Valentiná pondered to herself, her husband’s words drowning out like background noise as the smile upon her countenance vanished.

… Valentina?

By now, surely Caius knew that he wasn’t quite like the other children. He was the heir, whereas this boy… he would be the spare. What if he grew jealous? What if he was weak?

One weak link in a chain causes it to break. The thought of that made the mother’s heart ache a bit. No; he cannot be the weak link. Hannibal must become strong; a soldier, perhaps, as secondborns often were. He must be his brother’s sworn sword and shield, his right hand. His shadow.

… Valentina?

Each offense this baby might cause is something that would reflect back upon his parents. Something, that would reflect upon his mother. I must be stern with him, Valentiná thought, as a shaky breath was heaved from her chest. Verdant eyes soon were drawn to Marcus, who stood in the very center of the room.

“… Valentina? Did you hear what I just said?”

By divine favour, and as witnessed by Her Imperial Highness, Joan Mariana Horen, Her Imperial Highness, Lecelina Horen, His Highness, Adrian Marcel, and as attended to by the Court Alchemist Lady Manon and the Imperial Lady Physician, Andromède dey Medford, the newborn prince is found to be sound of body and spirit. His breath is strong, his voice is clear and his form is well-shaped, promising the makings of an heir. Yet it must be spoken with gravity that the Crown Princess herself has been left frail by the ordeal of childbirth. Though she endures, her strength is diminished and she remains under careful watch of the Lady Alchemist Manon and the imperial physicians until her health is restored. … And in the small hours of the night, after the imperial family had spoken their congratulations and gone on to celebrate the birth of a new heir, the young mother was, at last, alone. She had been instructed to rest, to not let the world outside her chamber bother her. There had been a precarious incident, too much blood lost. Any midwife could tell that such a wound would take its time to heal.

That Crown Princess, however, found herself feeling restless. What of that child, that little boy? Was he well? Would his birth render her irrelevant like so many other imperial consorts before her? Surely not, no. This was different.

But that boy…

She had only held him for a brief moment before. Valentiná grasped onto the bedpost to help herself onto her feet. The pain that shot through her body after a move made too quickly, was blinding. A gasp, a breath of air and then another; she was fine. This was fine. Slow and steady wins the race, and it would only be a few paces until she reached the adjacent chamber, where that little babe would rest within his crib.

It took a while, but after that brief struggle, Valentiná found herself hovering over that crib, so beautifully engraved. A dragon, with rubies set for its eyes, watched over that infant day and night. Other symbols of that child‘s imperial heritage covered every bit of that crib, crosses, crowns, carvings of asturian design as well. What did an infant need such a fancy crib for? Valentiná‘s father had insisted, however. "What are we, poor?" Did he say. The aged duke had stayed with his daughter for months during her physician‘s ordained bedrest. They had grown closer, laughed, argued and discussed Adrian Marcel‘s late wife most nights. He never likes to mention her, so Valentiná saw this as a treat. She had scarcely known the woman before she died on high seas. Now, however, she felt closer to Maria del Chey than ever before. What advice would she give her imperial daughter now, that she stood before her own child‘s crib, hesitating to lift that baby, swaddled in gold and purple, up into her arms?

Have heart, Val. He won‘t bite you.

Indeed, instead of sleeping, he gazed around the room curiously, green eyes wide with wonder, though he was still unable to make out shapes. Unadorned fingers traced her boy‘s cheek carefully, letting out a breath of relief. So he was alive, and well. Did he not yet know, that he would one day inherit a grand Empire? Was he looking around so curiously to try and grasp the weight that has been born onto him, hoping someone would lift it off him? Soft sounds came from that baby, merely a slight fuss, as he found himself within his mother‘s arms. The crown princess rocked him carefully, and let out a hush, trying to silence him. So small and frail he was.

Surely he would be no tyrant like Hadrian. He would be more akin to his father and his great-grandfather, a future warrior, perhaps. Or a scholar, a statesman born to do his duty.

We shall see, that Asturian mused. Slowly did she make her way toward the window that let gentle moonlight and the faded sounds of a town, still ripe with celebrations, into the nursery. She checked his hands and his feet; ten fingers and ten toes, rosy cheeks, and a little button nose.

My son, don’t you know that you are a perfect child?

…

Perfect, but you are not mine to keep, though I am your mother. You are a child of the Empire, belonging to the Empire, belonging to the throne.

That thought broke Valentiná‘s heart. Had Elizabeth of Balamena felt the same when cradling Marcus? What of Circe of Myrine? Did she feel like crying when realizing that Hadrian was not born for happiness?

Child, you may not cling to my skirts as your younger siblings might. You will receive a strict education, you will feel so lonely, though everyone seems to love you. How I wish I could spare you from it all; spare you from your fate - but this is real life. This little innocent baby will be Emperor of all of Mankind someday. I pray you shall not resent your father and myself for putting this on you. I promise, I shall do my utmost to protect you.

The mother set a gentle kiss upon her son‘s brow, lingering in that peaceful moment while it lasted. Tomorrow, he might be the heir to an Empire, but tonight, he is only a young mother‘s newborn son..

Within the Throne Room of the Celosian Palace, the Prince and Princess shall be joined in holy matrimony. Subjects of the Empire and honored guests from beyond its borders are invited to bear witness to the union and to the future of House Horen.

Before the ceremony’s commencement, the gathered assembly shall be led in prayer by His Holiness, who shall then solemnize the marriage. A procession of ladies of honor, chosen at the Bridal Party, shall accompany Princess Valentina in her approach to the altar.

The Joust | at 5 pm EST
Hosted by His Highness Prince Valentin of Burgundy in honor of the newlywed couple, the jousting tournament shall stand as the culminating spectacle of the wedding revelries. Commencing immediately after the nuptial ceremony, the tournament shall display the valor and prowess of men and women from across the Empire.

The new era of our Empire, marked by the ascension of His Imperial Majesty, Hadrian I, precedes a greater rejuvenation of the nation. As the center of culture and courtly life within the Empire, the Imperial Court requires its offices to be well-maintained for the benefit of the people. As it is the duty of the Office of the Lady Chamberlain of the Empire to ensure that extant vacancies within the court are filled, the process of hiring is now declared began, with available positions permitted for all subjects of the Empire to apply for.

The following positions are thus declared as open and available for hiring…

Seneschal
The Seneschal is the second of the Imperial Chamberlain, expected to serve as their lieutenant in all matters of the Court. The purview of the Seneschal is broad, essentially operating at the behest of the Chamberlain and whatever they deem necessary, but typical duties involve recruiting new courtiers and hiring and managing the palace servantry.

Governor

The governors and governesses of the courts are charged with the education of the Imperial Household, including wards of the Courts. All Governors required certification from the Prince’s Institution or a similar accrediting body.

Master of Games
The Master of Games oversees all entertainments, tournaments, jousts and hunts arranged by the Imperial Courts. Tasked with arranging both leisurely and ceremonial sport, the Master of Games must also maintain the imperial kennels and stables and thus serves a second function as the Master of the Horse.

Master of Imperial Regalia
The Master of Imperial Regalia is appointed to preserve and record any courtly artifacts belonging to House Horen; old and new. He is furthermore tasked with procuring items that might be of interest to the Emperor.

High Almoner
The High Almoner, appointed by the Chamberlain in consultation with the Holy Mother Church, attends to the spiritual and moral needs of the Courts, acting as a confessor and guide for the Imperial Household and those attached to it.

Noble Attendants
The Lords and Ladies-in-Waiting of the Imperial Court are appointed by the Chamberlain at the leisure of The Imperial Crown, intended to be personal companions to members of the Imperial Household.

Scribes
The scribes of the Court are tasked with the careful recording of all Imperial events, decrees and other proceedings. They serve as scribes during ceremonies and councils, as well as during any public function of the Imperial Crown.

Wards
Young Lords and Ladies of the nobility may apply for tutelage under the Imperial Courts, as approved by the Office of the Chamberlain. They are to be provided for and educated as per Imperial Standards laid out by the Dean of the Crownlands. Tutelage may start as early as at the age of five and will end once the ward has reached the age of majority.

Servantry

To run a court, one needs servants and attendants as a strong backbone. If one has no servants, noble Lords would be forced to drink from used chalices and eat from dirty plates. The Imperial Servantry is tasked with the upkeep of the Imperial Courts and trusted to be discreet. Servants are paid a befitting salary. They are fed and housed in thanks for their service.

He shall kneel before GOD, where the High Priest will anoint him and set upon his brow, the Crown of Mankind. Thus he shall be invested with the authority to protect, govern and guide his people.

Following the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, the High King of Idunia, Tar-Zôrzagar Argelion Orion Harren Arthalion shall in turn be presented before the High Priest. He will be anointed in the same rites as Emperor Hadrian.

✠ ON THE SWEARING OF FEALTY;
After the coronations, all vassals and banners of the Empire of Man, including that of the High Kingdom of Idunia are commanded to attend a great audience, where they shall be required to swear their oaths of fealty to the Empire of Man. They are asked to come in full regalia, bearing gifts and the full might of their respective households. In the case that a noble lord or a vassal of the Empire is unable to attend the coronation and swear fealty, he is expected to send a representative of his household to do his duty.

THE IMPERIAL THEODOSIAN COURT

LET IT BE KNOWN, in the year of the Lord our GOD, two-thousand and thirty-seven, it is by decree of Their Imperial Majesties, Tiberias I Horen, Emperor of Man, Holy Imperator, and Circe Horen, née Mareno, Empress of Man, that this Imperial Court be established as the unified body in which all of man might gather, not solely for governance and the convening of great bodies but to drink their fill from the great spring that is Our court. It is through this proclamation that all men shall adhere to the purview of the Imperial Court in regard to address, fashion, etiquette, moral standing, and conduct of life. That it may be the central axis upon which the Lords and Ladies of the Empire shall commune with one another and the Imperial Crown.

The Imperial Theodosian Court takes its name in reverence of Empress Theodosia, who, though oft unseen, stood ever at Emperor Aurelius' side. While the forefront of his reign was one of prosperity and clarity, it was the good Empress Theodosia who acted as her husband's hands when he could not. She was his confidante, his scribe, his mirror in thought. And together, they exemplified the pillars upon which true balance is built: the display of power and the charity of good counsel. So shall the Empire now be girded by two pillars—its legionaries and its court. Like Empress Theodosia herself, the latter shall be the realm's guiding voice. By naming it in her honor, we bind ourselves to the legacy of Aurelius and Theodosia, a testament that Our great Empire's sovereignty lies not only in the sword's power but in the quiet resolve of assembly and instruction.

All titled Lords and Ladies, raised as stewards of land and people with the assent of His Imperial Majesty, are by right and duty made members of this Court. Within Our Imperial Assembly, they shall be expected to render more than appearance; they are to maintain an active presence in the governance, ceremonial life, stewardship of the realm’s customs, culture, and above all else, faith. While it is an afforded responsibility, it is one of privilege; failure to uphold the standards of Our body is to forsake the generosity of their Imperial Majesties and the gentility of one’s peers. To be dismissed from Court would be to find one’s cup emptied of all favor. Thus, let each member of this Court commit themselves, in full, to the prosperity of Our body lest they be severed from her fruits entirely.

This guiding compendium shall discuss the established roles and courtesies within the Imperial Court of Man, let it be the standard of principles upon which man, once fractured, shall maintain its unity through the pursuits and custodianship of Our body. Through this Court, its offices, its rites, and its expectations, the realm shall be girdled in dignity, its traditions preserved, and its people led in strength and civility. Herein are laid the forms of address, the duties of office, and the customs both spoken and unspoken that govern Our gathering. Let no Lord or Lady claim ignorance, for the path of proper conduct is now made plain.

𝕀. INSTITUTIONS OF COURT

LADY SENESCHAL, HEAD OF THE ROYAL RETINUE

Her Excellency, Elaine Vander

The Lady Seneschal is the leading officer of the Royal Household’s Retinue. Responsible for the governance and cohesion of those closest to the Royal Family, the Lady Seneschal oversees the hiring, management, and conduct of all those who may cross the threshold into the most inner chambers of the Royal Family. Beyond staffing, the Lady Seneschal holds the second-highest rank within the Theodosian Court, only second to the Chamberlain, and shall defer to the Lord Chamberlain or Her Imperial Majesty in regard to the daily runnings of the court.

Those under the purview of the Lady Seneschal:

GOVERNESS

Her Excellency, Cosima von Leopold

Governors and Governesses are charged with the stewarding and education of the Royal Household and the young Lords and Ladies who ward within the Theodosian Court. All prospective tutors are required to take and pass tests on the histories of man, court etiquette, and advanced arithmetic, all to be administered by the Lord Seneschal.

HIGH ALMONER

His Holiness, Harrentzedek, High Pontifex

The Lord High Almoner, appointed by the Lord Seneschal with input of the Holy Mother Church, oversees the Royal Household’s religious endowments, acting as a spiritual advisor for the Crown and the Theodosian Court and ensuring His Imperial Majesty’s mercy reaches the poor through the administration of alms and charity.

NOBLE ATTENDANTS

The Lords and Ladies in Waiting of the Theodosian Court are appointed by the Lord Seneschal, or at the pleasure of Their Imperial Majesties, to be the personal companions to the members of the Royal Household. Gentlemen ushers, headed by the Groom of the Stool, shall attend to the male members of the Household whilst Ladies in Waiting, headed by the First Lady of Honor, shall attend to the female members of the Household.

WARDS

Wards submitted for tutelage under the Theodosian Court, approved by the Lord Seneschal and cared for by their guardians, shall be regarded and recognized as Pages and Maids of Honor. The process of warding can begin as early as five and ends, typically, at the age of eighteen, where they then may be officially recognized as a gentleman or lady of the court, or offered a higher position within the Theodosian Court.

Only those with a recognized position within the Theodosian Court might be afforded a ward, up to two, whilst Their Imperial Majesties may take up as many wards as they see fit or choose to bestow a ward upon a member of the Court.

SERVANTRY

The backbone of the Lord Seneschal’s office, the servantry, composed of maids and butlers, are tasked with ensuring the ease of events and catering to the needs of the Royal Household. While the servantry shall remain ever discreet and unobtrusive in the presence of the Crown, they are expected to maintain the highest standards of decorum, vigilance, and readiness.

LORD CHAMBERLAIN, HEAD OF THE COURT ASSEMBLY

His Imperial Excellency, Prince Edward Alstion, Archduke of Alba

The Lord Chamberlain is the leading officer of the Theodosian Court. As the first contact for all matters regarding this court, he is responsible for the health and nurturing of its assembly. As liaison on behalf of Their Imperial Majesties, he oversees the reception of guests, the presentation of petitions, and the observance of protocol in all formal gatherings. No person, whether noble, foreign dignitary, or commoner, may presume upon the privileges of the court without first being acknowledged through this office.

The Lord Archivist serves as the chief steward of the written and remembered history of the Theodosian Court and royal family. They are entrusted with the careful recording of all royal events, decrees, and proceedings, serving as the court’s scribe during ceremonies and councils. Beyond chronicling, the Lord Archivist oversees the preservation and organization of the kingdom’s artifacts and relics.

LORD PHYSICIAN

The Lord Physician holds responsibility for the health and well-being of the Royal Household and those who serve within the Theodosian Court. All physicians must undergo examinations in herbcraft and alchemy, with their qualifications certified and reviewed by the Lord Chamberlain. The Lord Physician shall also serve as the premier head of medicinal practices within the Kingdom of Burgundy.

MASTER OF GAMES

The Master of Games oversees all entertainments, tournaments, and hunts held within the Theodosian Court. Tasked with arranging both leisure and ceremonial sport, the Master of Games must also maintain the kennels, stables, and the training of all creatures used for noble pastime.

MASTER OF ROBES

The Master of Robes attends to the apparel and presentation of the Theodosian Court, ensuring that garments for every ceremony, courtly appearance, and rite are prepared to the highest standard whilst also ensuring every lord adheres to a set of strict sumptuary laws. Tailors, seamstresses, and jewelers shall labor under the Master of Robes careful supervision.

IMPERIAL COURT MAGE

Her Excellency, Vivien Maelstorm

The Imperial Court Mage serves as the chief authority on all arcane matters within the Theodosian Court, acting as the primary advisor and enforcer of magical affairs on behalf of His Imperial Majesty. Tasked with overseeing the lawful use of magic throughout the realm, the Court Mage ensures that all enchantments, divinations, and protections conducted within the Realm of Man adhere to sanctioned protocols. Sorcerers, alchemists, and mages shall answer to the Court Mage's purview.

MEMBERS OF THE COURT

The Gentlemen and Ladies of the Theodosian Court are drawn from the lordly families of the realm and shall be regarded with the respect due to their station. To be acknowledged as a Gentleman or Lady of the Court is to have one's position formally recognized, with the attendant expectation of upholding the customs and etiquette befitting the court. Visiting dignitaries and those of low birth may be granted recognition within the court only upon presenting themselves to the Lord Chamberlain or directly to Their Imperial Majesties.

IMPERIAL ARCHCHANCELLOR, HEAD OF THE IMPERIAL PRIVY OF MIDDELAN

His Imperial Excellency, Lord Ledicort de Senna, Margrave of Mount Santa-Lorina

The Imperial Archchancellor is the chief legal officer of the Kingdom of Burgundy, holding the highest appointed position beneath His Majesty. As confidant and advisor to the Crown, the Lord Chancellor bears the responsibility as keeper of the Great Seal, distributing all royal decrees to the public on behalf of His Majesty. As the head of His Majesty’s Privy, the Council of Middelan, he shall ease the running of the Kingdom by effectively distributing tasks and maintaining transparency to the council.

The Lord Treasurer is the holder of the Privy Purse and keeper of the Royal Treasury. As the first contact to all matters regarding the economic state, he is responsible for taxes, funding public projects, and the maintenance of His Majesty’s Lands. As a seated member of the Council of Middelan, the Lord Treasurer shall report on the current wealth of Burgundy’s coffers and shall provide regular updates on losses and ways to invigorate the Royal Treasury.

LORD JUSTICAR

His Imperial Excellency, Imperial Prince Hadrian Horen, Crown Prince

The Lord Justicar serves as a chief enforcer of the realm's laws, acting with authority granted by the Crown to ensure justice is swiftly and fairly administered. As the first contact to carry out the King's justice, the Lord Justicar presides over legal matters both great and small. As a seated member of the Council of Middelan, the Lord Justicar shall work closely with the Lord Chancellor to aid in the interpretation and enforcement of royal decrees and report on the developments of criminal offenses within Burgundy.

IMPERIAL MARSHAL

His Imperial Excellency, Manfred von Berkhoven

The Lord Marshal is the head of the Burgundian Soldiers. As the first contact to all matters regarding the military, he is responsible for maintaining and training of Burgundy’s armed forces. As a seated member of the Council of Middelan, the Lord Marshal shall report on the current progress of the military and bring to the council's attention any developments regarding the safety and security of Burgundy and her people.

IMPERIAL GRAND KNIGHT

His Imperial Excellency, Ser Sirius Mareno, Dragon’s Right Eye

The Lord Knight Commander is leader of His Majesty’s Kings Guard and the Order of Red Scales. As the first contact to the direct safety of the Royal Household and members of the Theodosian Court, he is responsible for their protection at all times and making records of all the knight orders within Burgundy. As a seated member of the Council of Middelan, the Lord Knight Commander shall report on the developments of the Order of Red Scales.

LORD PRAETOR

His Imperial Excellency, Prince Coenraed van Aert, Prince of Blackvale

The Lord Praetor is a seat-holding officer of the Theodosian Court tasked with overseeing matters of intra-imperial bellicose conflict. He is responsible for the adjudication of rules of engagement, the articulation of vassal war goals, and the impartial tracking of victory conditions. Working in close accord with the Imperial Marshal and the Justiciar, the Lord Praetor shall hear complaints related to military and judicial affairs, and execute the Emperor’s will where necessary.

𝕀. ON INTRODUCTION & GREETINGS

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ One must always offer greeting befitting both one’s own station and that of the other. Any err in initial address is to be regarded as a slight..

✠ Should a man greet a woman of equal or higher station, he shall bow with one foot forward from the waist and incline his head three-quarters on the way down. Should the lady offer her hand in turn, he may kiss it lightly, but never presume to grasp it unbidden.

✠ Should a woman greet a man of equal or higher station, she shall rest a foot behind the other as to perform a curtsy whilst averting direct eye contact, awaiting any gesture that might permit further conversation.

✠ Should a man greet another man of equal station, he shall offer a simple nod of his head toward him with acknowledgement of the other’s status.

✠ Should a man greet another man of higher station, he shall bow as stated previously, and speak only when invited to, deferring to the other’s word and gesture.

✠ Should a woman greet another woman of equal station, she shall offer a simple nod of her head toward her with acknowledgement of the other’s status.

✠ Should a woman greet another woman of higher station, she shall curtsy as stated previously, and speak only when invited to, deferring to the other’s word and gesture.

✠ It is expected that a woman of high-station would never grasp her skirts when curtsying, as it is expected a man of high-station would never need rely on resting an arm at his core when bowing. It is often admired from a lord or lady who might showcase their skills in dance with a flourish of their arms.

✠ All lowborn are expected to give proper due when greeting by performing full displays of deep bows and full curtsies.

✠ Any lapse of formality and greeting by a member of a Lord’s retinue is a direct reflection upon such Lord and their failings to uphold due etiquette within Our court.

𝕀𝕀. ON PUBLIC EXPECTATIONS

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ All subjects of the Realm shall conduct themselves with dignity, restraint, and piety in public, that the honor of Our court be upheld.

✠ All subjects are expected to uphold and defend the honor of Their Imperial Majesties, the Empire, and our Holy Mother Church, lest dishonor be brought swiftly upon them.

✠ One may always be permitted to publicly correct any person who does not adhere to the rules and stylings of Our court, unless they be of a higher station.

✠ One shall keep one’s person clean and attire in good repair. Any lapse in appearance shall be expected to be met with ejection from Our court.

✠ One must never levy vulgar or distasteful speech in public, especially not in the presence of Their Imperial Majesties, lest they wish to lose a tongue.

✠ One must always offer cordiality and courtesy to all official envoys and guests of the Imperial Crown.

✠ One must take their leave of absence when in poor health, for spreading a sickness, intended or not, would be a grave slight upon the Lords of Our court.

𝕀𝕀𝕀. ON RANK & STATION

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ All subjects shall know their place within the Imperial Court and bear themselves accordingly, and display the honors, insignia, and privileges proper to their rank, never claiming more than is their due.

✠ One should not presume to speak or stand before a peer of higher station unless first summoned or acknowledged.

✠ One must acknowledge rank first over other nominal identifiers, such as age or gender. Such that a young Lord of higher station would always take precedence over an aged Lord of lower station.

✠ Lords of equal station shall assume precedence based on offices held in service unto the Crown, but should neither lord hold an appointed office, then precedence shall be given to the more senior house.

✠ One should not presume to speak or stand before a peer of higher station unless first summoned or acknowledged.

✠ One should not presume to sit in the presence of a peer of higher station unless invited or commanded to do so.

✠ One must never address a peer of higher or equal station in terms suited for the comforts of private company, nor by given name alone, unless kin by blood or bound by law
✠ One of lower station must always yield passage in halls, chambers, or rooms with an accompanied bow or curtsy out of due respect.

𝕀𝕍. ON IMPERIAL PRESENCE

✠ One must acknowledge and offer due tribute to Their Imperial Majesties with a curtsy or bow when entering or being graced by their presence. Men might briefly remove their hats when bowing.

✠ One must never turn their back to Their Imperial Majesties, always retreat by taking careful steps backward to one’s former place.

✠ One must avert their gaze should Their Imperial Majesties choose to speak in confidence or withdraw from open audience as it is discourteous to behold the Imperial countenance unbidden.

✠ One must never refer to members of the Imperial Family by their first names unless in a private setting or a member of said family.

✠ One may not speak in the presence of Their Imperial Majesties unless acknowledged or invited to, if the matter is urgent one might ask permission with the phrase, “Your Imperial Majesty, if I may…” or “Your Imperial Majesty, might I approach…?”
✠ One must never raise one’s voice above that of Their Imperial Majesties, nor speak over or interrupt them in any manner.

✠ One may not take their leave of the Imperial presence unless dismissed, if the matter is urgent one might ask permission with the phrase, “Your Imperial Majesty, might I take leave...?"

✠ One must remain standing in the presence of Their Imperial Majesties unless given permission to sit. Exceptions may be given to the elderly.

IMPERIAL FASHION

A compendium of the expected adherence to fashion for all Imperial Citizens.

𝕀. ON HAIR & HEADWEAR

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ All exposed hair is expected to be well-groomed and maintained, as cleanliness is next to Godliness.

✠ Whilst it is expected to see the full length of a young woman’s hair, as it is traditionally so rarely ever cut, young women’s hair should be pinned up when in the presence of the court.

✠ Whilst lower cuts are often popular amongst the men of the Imperial Army and those familiar with war, it is normal to see young men sport hair at shoulder length, showing their juvenile standing within the court.

✠ The married, widowed, and elderly are expected to cover their heads with hats, veils, and other sorts of approved head coverings of their respective standing.

✠ For men, it is expected to remove one’s hat whilst in a place of worship and in the Imperial’s direct presence.

✠ To display one’s balding hair is considered impolite and is best shaved bald in the spotting area.

𝕀𝕀. ON FACIAL GROOMING

✠ Men, unmarried or under the age of thirty, are expected to be cleanly shaven.

✠ Married men, or those of the above seniority, are allowed to wear beards only if connected by the burnsides. If one is unable to grow a beard in full, it is rather expected to wear a moustache instead. Either style must be well-maintained at court.

✠ It is considered unsanitary to let their beard grow longer than two inches off the face.

✠ Women and Men should maintain a forehead length of no more than four fingers.

✠ Whilst powdered rouges and lip tint are customary, it is considered gauche to wear a full face of makeup or to lighten one’s complexion.

𝕀𝕀𝕀. ON JEWELS & ADORNMENTS

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court
✠ Closed Crowns are reserved for Their Imperial Majesties and foreign Royalty.

✠ Open Crowns and Coronets are reserved for those with the title of Kingdom or Archduchy, respectively.
✠ Diadems and Tiaras are reserved for the direct Imperial Family and the direct Household of Royal Families under the Empire.

✠ Circlets are reserved for the Imperial Family, the direct Household of Royal Families, and titular Princes.

✠ Those of any noble standing might wear fillets.

✠ All crown regalia worn by men are strictly forbade in the presence of Their Imperial Majesties, unless given express permission or of a foreign body.

✠ The Lorraine is one's best accessory and often seen either around one’s neck or upon one's belt.

✠ Necklaces, rings, bracelets, and brooches are generally worn among the nobility, though lowborn people are not necessarily prohibited from donning them.
✠ If a person is wed, they are expected to maintain a keepsake of their spouse on them at all times. Such things can include rings, locks of hair in an amulet, bracelets and the like.

✠ It is considered distasteful to adorn your body with piercings of any kind, including rings that adorn the ears.

𝕀𝕍. ON ARMOR & WEAPONS

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ Whilst wearing armor in court is not prohibited, and rather respected, those donning the plate must keep their face free of any obstruction unless there are a member of the Imperial Army.

✠ When worn in court, one must make sure to keep their armor clean and undented.

✠ One’s sword must be sheathed at all times, unless a member of the Imperial Army.

✠ All ranged weapons are forbade from Court, unless a member of the Imperial Army.

✠ Drawing one’s sword, or weapon of choice, in the presence of Their Imperial Majesties would be seen as treasonous unless in defense of Their Imperial Presence.

✠ Armor trimmed, gilded, or smithed with gold is strictly forbidden unless a member of the Imperial Army.

✠ Sashes over armor are reserved only for recognised Lords of the Empire and those with the assent of HIM and must be in a shade differing from Burgundy or Tiberian purple.

✠ Those under the age of fourteen are forbade from carrying a pointed weapon any longer than six inches.

𝕍. ON TEXTILES

✷ . . . As is within the Imperial Court

✠ The use of textiles in the shades of Burgundy or Tiberian Purple is forbidden unless a member of the Imperial Family or those in direct service to the Imperial Household

✠ All clothing in shades of black are only to be worn in times of mourning, to wear such otherwise would be considered rude to the families of the recently parted.

✠ Trim of golden thread or in shades imitating the metal are reserved for the Lordly Households.

✠ The color of true red is reserved for Lordly Households.

✠ Ermine and Sable are reserved for the direct households of Princely, Royal, and Imperial families.

✠ Those of common birth are prohibited from wearing silk, satin, and velvet.

✠ The mixing of silver and gold on fabric is prohibited.

✠ The shades of purple and black may not be quartered together in any fashion unless worn by the Imperial Family.

✠ Men’s fashion begins with a simple shift of plain linen, such is expected of a man of good hygiene.

✠ Men should never be seen shirtless in public.

✠ On top of the shift, a man might traditionally wear a tunic or a kirtle, that falls to the knees, variations might depend on the region.

✠ A man’s tunic or houppelande may not exceed in length of four inches above the ankle and must be longer than at least twelve inches below the waist.

✠ Men’s fashion - much like women’s, may show patterns.

✠ Arms and shoulders are expected to be covered.

✠ Men might often wear Hoses of particularly striking colors as a fashionable statement.

✠ Men might wear capes or long covers but such are expected to reach the ground or hover a maximum of six inches above.
✠ Men may wear wear all different kinds of footwear; boots, poulaines, ankle boots, … though it is forbidden to wear something open-footed.

𝕍𝕀𝕀. ON WOMEN’S FASHION

✠ Women’s fashion begins with a simple shift of plain linen, such is expected of a woman of good hygiene.
✠ To keep their legs warm, women wear stockings and shoes made of sturdy leather.

✠ A shoe should be practical above all. It is considered vain to wear tall heels.

✠ Above the shift, a woman traditionally wears a kirtle or a tunic, which may be embellished or plain.

✠ Alternatively, some women opt to wear a cotehardie over their shift.
✠ Over the kirtle, a woman may opt to wear a surcoat, which is a
✠ Instead of a surcoat, some women prefer wearing a houppelande or a herigaut.

✠ Dresses are expected to reach the ankles.

✠ Arms and shoulders are expected to be covered.

✠ Sleeves may be worn long. Some women opt to have their sleeves long enough to almost touch the floor.

✠ During winter months, women can be seen wearing fur coats or thick cloaks over their gowns.

✠ During court, noble ladies are expected to represent their House, so it is not uncommon to see women wearing their houses coat of arms embroidered into their gowns.

All Lords and Ladies, as well as those recognized by Our Court, are invited to send letters of intent or inquiry to the Lord Chamberlain, should they wish to serve, become a ward, or otherwise join the workings of Our esteemed assembly.

Let it also be remembered: this compendium is not a mere ornament, but the very foundation of Courtly order. Study it well, for in its pages are laid the standards by which all conduct, address, and ceremonial life shall be measured. From the tallest Lord to the shortest man, any lapse of expectations is no longer to be hidden under the guise of ignorance.

As the Imperial Theodosian Court stands as the center of unity and culture in Our Empire, it is imperative each citizen holds fast to the honor the sanctity of its demands, lest we lose what separates man from all else.
