The woman’s eyes slowly peeled open at the quiet chorus of a birdsong. She was curled up along her side, knees to chest, upon a bed of dew-drenched moss. The air was scented of fresh rain and notes of wet grass.

Her joints ached, and her head throbbed, the thinning Keen carefully pushing herself into a sit. As she came to, did Heilwig begin to observe the hugging grove.

Trees loomed overhead, branches and brambles forming a trail before Heilwig. Crocuses and magnolias of silvering petals scattered the woodlands, lining the path that lay there. The eternal blue of the sky she knew, now possessed the couple of Sun and Moon, whilst their children of clouds and stars frolicked about in the cosmos. 

It was calm and serene, with only the chirp of the songbirds to fill the void of noise…

Heilwig swiveled, peering off into the thickets that stalked behind her. Nothing was there except the swaying pinewoods. A quiet exhale befell her, as she turned back around… She blinked.

Centering the path ahead, stood a large White Stag. Its ivory fur, bathed in Sun and Moon’s light, and antlers, great and mighty. The dull eyes of the Stag, cerulean in hue, stared upon Heilwig with little yield. 

An anticipatory breath hitched in her throat, as she beheld the estranged Stag with her own Keenly blues. 

The Stag eyed the woman a moment longer, before turning down the path and continuing on in a slow saunter. After a few paces, it turned again, watching the animist. Awaiting her.

After a beat, did Heilwig rise. Her bare feet trodding softly across the soils and moss, carrying her onward, stalking after the Stag along the path. 

Hours passed. Days then, too, yet Heilwig would never know. The Divide, being the Sun and Moon, reserved themselves to the skies, never changing, never moving, content with watching the mortal and Stag trail forth through the woods. 

It felt endless, yet Heilwig followed. It felt pointless, yet something compelled her legs to keep moving. 

Then eventually, the path reached a clearing. A cliff, with nothing beyond except universe at first. The Stag stopped just before, though Heilwig’s feet carried her to the precipice. Nearing the edge, in the far distance now, she could see the outline of land. Mountains, deserts, the plains and the trees- yet so far, too far. 

Heilwig veered her gaze down, towards what she assumed would be the steep, neverending drop- yet her own face returned to her. A reflection, a pool. One that sunk down… and down… 

No life possessed the waters off the cliff, nor light nor bottom. To fall would be to drown. To sink and to die.

Heilwig glanced upwards once more, puzzled and confused. She looked then to the Stag, who was surely behind her.

The Stag was gone. What followed, caused Heilwig to still. A paleness drenched her face white.

A canine of colossal girth, viciousness in its maw, strangled by a coat of black fur. Eyes, pricked with sanguine, staring upon Heilwig with nothing but unforgiving savagery.

A breath held in her throat, feet stepping back, heels now aligned with the precipice.

The wolf prowled closer, a low groan building in its chest.

The beast then launched at the woman, ready to assault!

Heilwig leapt back, slipping upon the cliff, and plunging into the shadowed waters. She sank and sank, and the omen pursued no longer. 

She sank for hours. For days, yet Heilwig would never know. Darkness swallowed her, for the journey between worlds and dreams was a lengthy, unkind process.

After what felt like eons of drowning…

...Heilwig began to float. A light cut through, and a cold began to strangle her throat, her limbs, dying her fingertips a plum-purple. She reemerged in a new pool, upon the top of the highest mountain, closest to the cosmos as her mortal self could be. Frostbite chewed at her limbs, water spurting from her lungs as she gagged.

No longer serene, no longer calm. 

But awake once more, for her ill-fated journey of living was not yet done.

To the bandits who robbed the Viscounty of Angrenost,

Your attack on the home of my closest friend was not unnoticed, nor was it unchallenged. You likely believed the timing gave you safety, the cover of night, the reduced presence, and the assumption that any response would be slow or disorganized. That assumption failed. You were not as unseen as you thought, nor as untouchable as you intended to be.

You did not act without structure. Your movement suggests coordination, and your escape shows you understood how to avoid immediate pursuit. You knew when to leave, and you did so quickly. That was enough to prevent a full capture, however, it was not enough to prevent consequence.

The dwarf that was a part of your group did not leave with you, in fact you abandoned him. He was encountered within the very tower walls, where he met my gaze and he was killed without further exchange. Or well, he was killed after telling me that you were all with him. Killed with no delay, and no opportunity for departure. You all must have seen me, didn’t you? Walking up the steps and you didn’t even give so much as a warning to him. You all just continued on by, knowing that he would likely be slain. His body has since been dealt with, pushed over the very cliffs of Angrenost. And his head was placed upon a pike outside our gates as a clear and permanent record of what occurred.

If you wish to confirm this, you are free to come and see it for yourselves.

If you do, you will bring a chest containing everything taken during your raid. Every item and piece of property stolen from Angrenost and its people is to be returned in full. Nothing is to be withheld, hidden, broken apart, or redistributed elsewhere.

If any portion is missing, or if you attempt to conceal what was taken, the matter will not be negotiated further.

With the wars behind us and peace now won, the time has come to look not to survival, but to preparation. The strength and future of Idunia lies in the next generation of soldiers, Knights, vassal leaders, and members of the Harren Court.

Over the next five years, the Iron Guard of Angrenost shall host a series of training sessions, focused mainly on the basics of combat, but also divulging into other areas such as medicine and the history of Idunia. These sessions are not meant to hone every individual into a prodigy, but rather to prepare them, to promote confidence in themselves, encourage companionship, and provide a firm understanding of a variety of topics which will only serve them in the future, and by extension, all of Idunia.

Participants will be introduced to a range of skills, including, but not limited to:

For combat, children will be taught the foundations – stance, movement, awareness, and control – at a pace suited to their age and experience. Emphasis will be placed on discipline, coordination, proper handling of training weapons, and learning to act with both confidence and restraint. No prior knowledge is needed, only a willingness to listen and desire to learn.
 

Beyond martial skill, these gatherings will also foster understanding of the Laws of Idunia, the Scrolls, Darkspawn education, and establishing the values that shape a good and honorable life.

All children of Idunia aged 8 and above are encouraged to attend, especially those without formal training. 

The soldiers of the Host and the Knights of the Realm are also encouraged to come aid in this endeavor – offering their experience, insight, and knowledge to help guide those seeking to learn. 

This is not a call to war, nor an opportunity for more willful children to hit each other without consequence; it is a call of growth – to raise a generation that is capable, wise, and steadfast.

Trainings shall be held within the Viscounty of Angrenost, in the barracks of the Iron Guard, located directly North of Alduun. Sparring weapons and armor shall be provided and distributed before each session.

Let it be said in preface that I, my order, or my people hold no disdain for the Numendain, quite the opposite, our peoples were once good friends, my father, Willfizz Grainstone, dwelt amongst you, and there is even a statue dedicated to one of our most revered fallen in your vineyards. 

However, several things have come to my attention that I cannot ignore or remain indifferent to. The men and women of Angrenost have written into their lawbooks to humiliate and, quite possibly, seriously injure any Gnome who enters their territory; their code that supposedly protects whimsy instead harms it, stating to detain us, coat us in honey, and fling us from tall-standing walls into trees before encouraging violent squirrels to attack us. Not only does this spit on our dignity, but a fall into trees is not a safe one; our bones may be broken upon dense branches or on the way to the ground, while further squirrel assault may lead to loss of eyes and sometimes severe, permanent mutilation. 

I call upon the Lordship of Angrenost to revoke this racist law, unbecoming of their standing. Whatever strife you may have with the Gnomish people is solely an individual occurrence that regards but one Gnome, not our entire, diverse grouping of cultures. Suppose this hateful edict is not revoked with haste. In that case, I, Cosmorazek Grainstone, Archward of the Order of Wisenwards, shall invoke the authority entrusted unto me to establish the following principle.

PRINCIPLE OF RETRIBUTION:

1. If any residents, affiliates, or nobles of the Lordship of Angrenost enter Gnomish territory, then they shall have Buckets of Oatmeal mixed with Glue thrown at them, simultaneously being told to leave. If weapons are drawn and blood shed, then the attackers will be reported as murderers to the relevant authorities.

2. All Gnomes unjustly injured by the men and women of Angrenost will be treated with the best medicine available to the Order of Wisenwards.

3. If the men and women of Angrenost explain the incident that caused the beginning of their cruelty, then the Gnome responsible shall be punished in a manner befitting their supposed crime. 

4. This principle will be completely nullified upon the revocation of the Gnome-Clauses in the Angrenost lawbook.

As if a sudden fever had come upon them, they would continue on the day after as if nothing had happened. Such a tradition is known as Grimday day. 

Founded by members of House Mithrenion, House Marsyr, and House Vourkehardt, Grimday day has grown from a whimsical escape from reality to a treasured tradition occurring every Saint’s Thursday. For the citizens of the fiefdom of Angrenost, Grimday day shall henceforth be a formal holiday, and every citizen of Angrenost must wish each other a very happy Grimday day. Celebrations of Grimday Day can take on many forms, but these are the very highly recommended and probably mandatory celebrations that must absolutely take place every Grimday day:

• Participants must lie on the ground and stare at the sun, basking in the little warmth it provides to the world and their souls. 
• The haunted chanting of the fabled words of Grimday day should be repeated over and over again to foreigners until they eventually give in to the unimaginable pain of peer pressure and join in on the celebrations. For we are grim and we do not judge.
• The sharing of names and what is making you so grim is absolutely MANDATORY. Those who do not share their grimness are inhibiting others from having a great Grimday day. 
• Grim thoughts and feelings should be reserved for Grimday day. To share these thoughts outside of the holiday not only brings darkness to your life but goes against the very spirit of the holiday, which is to remind you of how grim your life is (Just for the day). 
• At the end of Grimday day, you are happy again. No exceptions.

The Iron Guard of Angrenost

It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath.

Since the Tower of Iron rose from the rolling hills of the Highlands, the fiefdom of Angrenost has seen immense growth and prosperity over the years. Now, with walls surrounding the many citizens of the fief, it has become necessary to institute the formal guard force of the region. Known as the Iron Guard, the soldiers of Angrenost are among the strongest and most disciplined forces of the Apostolic Kingdom. 

While the entire Radiant Guard honors and upholds oaths as law, the soldiers of Angrenost take this idea further. For them, oaths are not just recited and honored, but tempered and honed daily in discipline, restraint, and vigilance. A man’s worth is not found in how well he can swing a sword or guide an arrow to its target. Rather, it is measured by his unwavering adherence to the vows he’s sworn. 

The Iron Guard falls under the vassal levies of the Radiant Guard of Idunia. While the Knight Commander of Angrenost has authority over the Iron Guard, the Tar, the Lord Commander of the Radiant Guard, and the Crown Prince or Princess (should they be invested) have final authority when it comes to total military activities, wars, and large-scale operations. 

Organization and Rankings

Since the Iron Guard falls under the Radiant Guard, the Chain of Command is shared between the two forces. However, due to the smaller size of Angrenost compared to the Capital, there are fewer rankings within the Iron Guard. While the Royal House of Arthalionath sits outside the Chain of Command for the Radiant Guard, House Mithrenionath of Angrenost does not. The only member of Mithrenionath who carries authority over the Iron Guard is the Matriarch or Patriarch. The current Matriarch of the Mithrenionath is Princess Azruphêl Aranuiriel Mithrenion. 

Ranks

✧ Recruit ✧ - Recruits within the Iron Guard share the same responsibilities and criteria as their counterparts within the Radiant Guard. They hold no authority within the Iron Guard or the Radiant Guard and can be promoted by either the Knight Commander or the Lord Commander. The criteria for promotion to a full member of the guard are: 

• One PvP Training
• One Medic Training or be a physician within the clinic
• One Combat/Formations training. 

Just as in the Radiant Guard, recruits receive no pay, though they do receive free housing. Additionally, if they attend a mission or operation with either guard force, they will be exempt from combat training.

✧ Guard of Iron ✧ - A Guard of Iron is equivalent to the Radiant Guard rank of Serjeant. These guards can act as squad leaders, though the Knight Commander of Angrenost leads most operations. Guards of Iron are also able to lead small patrols around the fief and the continent beyond. It is recommended that these patrols be coordinated with the Capital for organization. Guards of Iron receive the base pay of Serjeant from the Capital as well as an additional five Mina from Angrenost, making for a total compensation of 30 Mina. Guards of Iron can be promoted by either the Lord Commander or the Knight Commander of Angrenost. The criteria for promotion are the following:

• Five years as a Guard of Iron

• Running at least three training sessions (Type does not matter)
• The attendance of five trainings, patrols, or a combination of the two

Pay: 30 Mina

Again, similar to the Radiant Guard, should a Guard of Iron recruit three people to the Iron Guard, they shall be exempt from these criteria and promoted immediately.

✧ Tower Warden ✧ - A Tower Warden is the highest guard rank within the Iron Guard and is equivalent to the Radiant Guard rank of Master Serjeant. These guards lead the training within Angrenost and are also the personal guards of the Ruling House Mithrenion. Tower Wardens receive esteemed housing within the Tower of Iron and a generous pay of 40 Mina (30 from the Capital and 10 from Angrenost itself). Tower Wardens also manage the storehouses of Angrenost, produce alchemical weapons, and forge the armor and weapons of the Iron Guard. Tower Wardens may choose to become knights through service. The criteria for this are listed within the Radiant Guard of Idunia. 

Pay: 40 Mina

✧ Knights of Angrenost ✧ - While Angrenost does not have a separate order of knights, those who have proven their merit and been promoted to such a rank within the Iron Guard are known as the Knights of Angrenost. Equivalent to the military rank of Knight within the Radiant Guard, Knights of Angrenost share many responsibilities of overseeing the Iron Guard and the overall shepherding of recruits. Knights of Angrenost are resolute and disciplined, showcased in their years of service. Knights of Angrenost should proclaim the heraldry of the Tower of Iron somewhere on their armor, though they are permitted to also display their own as well.

The title ‘Ser’ means so much more than just a military rank, and with it comes the immense weight of honoring the many oaths of the Chivalric Code. Knights of Angrenost are the gold standard of upholding these oaths and should prioritize their knightly duties above their conventional military ones. Knights of Angrenost receive the same pay as Knights of the Radiant Guard: 30 Mina.

✧ Knight Commander of Angrenost ✧ - The Knight Commander of Angrenost is the highest authority within the Iron Guard and oversees the day-to-day operations of the levy. The Knight Commander operates closely with the Lord Commander and is responsible for maintaining the readiness of the levy. The Knight Commander can be appointed by either the Lord Commander of the Radiant Guard, the Matriarch or Patriarch of House Mithrenion, or the current Knight Commander if they are retiring from their position. If the Lord Commander appoints a Knight Commander, their choice must also be approved by the Matriarch or Patriarch Mithrenion. Should the Knight Commander of Angrenost perish suddenly, and there is no suitable replacement, the Lord Commander shall oversee the Iron Guard until a replacement is ready.  Knight Commanders receive the standard pay of 40 Mina.

The Lordly Laws and Whimsies of Angrenost

Issued During the Grand Harvest in the Year 235 of the Second Age

I. The Laws of Númendil stand as law of Angrenost in cases where the Lordly Laws and Whimsies of Angrenost fail to apply to a given situation. 

II. The Fairytale Laws, written by Her Royal Whimsiness, Princess Lôminzil Carnagar Aranuiriel Mithrenion, shall be in effect within the lands of Angrenost.

III. The GODSWOOD of Angrenost, identifiable by its White Heartwood Tree and the surrounding garden, shall have its care be entrusted to Mithrenionath blood and no others. No Magics, nor Mundane Interferences, nor Destruction of Any Kind shall occur without permissions of the Lordly Family Mithrenionath, and purposeful breach of this law shall be treated as crime of Vandalism, resulting in, at minimum, a banishment from the fiefdom. Further punishment shall be dictated case by case by the Lordly House of the Mithrenionath.

1. Mango trees within the Godswood shall have their care entrusted solely to Ser Nathannenel Eruedraith Mithrenion and no Magics, nor Mundane Interferences, nor Destruction of Any Kind shall occur without his permissions.
2. This law does not apply to picking fruits from the Godswood’s trees when harvested in moderation.

IV. The Garden of Whimsicals and Weirdness, identifiable by the realm’s only existing chocolate tree and its surrounding grotto and garden, shall have its care entrusted to Her Royal Highness, Princess Azruphêl Corweth Aranuiriel Mithrenion, her descendants, and no others. No magics, nor Mundane Interferences, nor Destruction of any kind shall occur without the permission of Her Royal Highness, Princess Azruphêl Corweth Aranuiriel Mithrenion, and purposeful obstruction or breach of this law shall be treated as crime of Vandalism, resulting in, at minimum, a banishment from the fiefdom. Further punishment shall be dictated case by case by the Lordly House of the Mithrenionath.

1. This law does not apply to picking chocolates, fruits, or berries from the garden’s plants when harvested in moderation.

V. Residents of Angrenost shall, at least thrice every week except in times of famine, leave warm milk and honey upon their doorsteps to appease the land’s Brownies, Faeries, and Fae-Corgis. Failure to do so shall not be considered a crime, but instead this lack of action will be freely shunned by both villagers and the Lordly House of the Mithrenionath. 

VI. Gnomes shall not be protected by Fairytale Law. Any gnome found within Angrenost shall be removed with haste. Failure to comply with peaceful removal will result in the following: 

1. The gnome shall be coated in honey and acorn bits.
2. The gnome shall be launched from the fiefdom’s walls via Angrenost’s GNOME-UCHES and land in the neighboring trees.
3. The gnome shall then be forced to endure a SIEGE-OF-THE-SQUIRRELS until all the honey and acorn bits are gone or until they are able to make their great escape, with no aid offered from Angrenost residents.

VII. All non-evil fairytale creatures are to be protected from hunting and physical harm within Angrenost’s lands with the exception of gnomes, pixies, and creatures which are or become a clear and undeniable threat. This protection includes the following:

• Brownies
• Corgis
• Faeries
• Falcons
• Frogs
• Jenny
• Little Mushroom People
• Musin
• Rabbits with floppy ears
• Squirrels
• Talking donkeys
• Unicorns
• People cursed into becoming one of the fairytale creatures listed above

VIII. All mages shall wear whimsically pointed hats while out in public except in cases of residents and visitors given express permission and paper by one of the Lordly House Mithrenionath. Failure to comply with the request to don a pointy hat shall result in, at minimum, a removal from the lands of Angrenost. The following mages are exempt from this law: 

• Housemages
• Bardmages
• Templars
• Users of Resonance
