AS MONTHS PASS WITH UNENDING MISERY, I FIND MYSELF UNWILLING TO LEAVE THE CONFINES OF MY CASTLE. Within the confines of my chambers, I hear the whispers of those walking by, questioning how much longer I shall rule from within Kazan’s hallowed halls. While I could continue my rule for years to come, I am faced with the walls closing in around me. I know even those around me who do not speak of my son’s rule to come, silently hope and scheme for the Aegirian age of Slesvik. 

 MY RULE OVER SLESVIK HAS BEEN ONE OF TWENTY-ONE LONG YEARS, LONG ENOUGH TO FEEL LIKE AN ETERNITY. Dietrich and I oversaw the end of Aevos, managing the Colborn Estate of Kazan until Orsathiael attacked our land, which forced us to move once more. In the new land of Azuras, we have seen the construction of our village. We sit with Architects to manage the construction of a new city, a Scyfling city, Slesvik reborn. We brought life to our lands, reuniting with the many Scyflings who made their way to Azuras. In my time as Prince, I brought us many successes; however, there is one failure that'll always stick with me: the failure to protect the innocent, those who could not protect themselves from the despicable injustice of Iudas Wick. I have witnessed horrendous acts of cruelty, and all I did was sign a slip of paper in hopes that one day the world will be a better one. To those who have suffered at his hands, I am sorry, but that will not fix it. I hope that speaking of his ill acts will bring a meaningful change, a change that will allow you to rest easy at night.

THE CHOICE OF WHO TO SUCCEED ME WAS NOT AN EASY ONE. I wondered who could shoulder the responsibility of protecting our people, whose hearts would be strong enough to endure the challenges that come alongside rulership, who would even have the capability of maintaining the ever-growing village. Astrid, I set my hand to this letter in the hope of furthering one simple end: that we may yet speak together. Not for gain of land nor favor at court, nor for any worldly profit, do I write; but only that there might be between us some plain discourse, face to face, as befits those sprung from one stock.

I remember you, as a small child in our hall, when your feet scarcely reached the rushes, and your hand clung to your nurse’s gown. In those days, there was in your eyes a brightness and a gentleness that moved the hearts of all who beheld you. Though the years have set a long road betwixt your sight and mine, as I favoured your marriage and until now, I cannot think that such light is wholly spent. The vicissitudes of this world, though they beat upon us like winter storms upon the field, cannot utterly wash away that which the Lord Himself has planted in a soul. Of this I am as sure as I am of the rising of the sun and the mercy of the Creator.

Wherefore I am sore troubled to hear that you deem me, and those of your own house and lineage, to bear you ill intent. Are we not of one blood? Do we not carry the same name upon our seals and banners? In us all runs the blood of Saint Carr, of whose life both priest and chronicler attest that the Lord and His servants found him a man worthy of remembrance. For his sake, and for the honor of our forebears, we strive to uphold the virtues handed down to us: Honor, selflessness, and the defense of the innocent and the weak.

Think you then that we, who call upon Saint Carr as our patron, would stoop to the sin of guestslaying? God forfend. We are not such as lure our own blood into snares, nor are we cast­ers of stones against those whom we once took in our arms and named as our own, nor guest or witness. The house that does such deeds calls down judgment upon itself, both from Heaven and from man, and I will not see our line so stained while breath is in my body.

I ask you plainly, therefore: what cause have you to hide yourself from us as from enemies in times of war? If there has been some fault in our conduct toward you, some word or deed that was unworthy of family, I beg you to set it forth, that we may know it and answer for it. I am a man and may err; our kin are but men and women and may err likewise. Yet no wrong may be righted while it lies in darkness, and no misunderstanding may be mended if it is not spoken.

In our summons to you, there lies no hidden snare, but a simple plea: that you will consent to appear before those of your own blood and name, that you may tell your cause and set forth your part in this matter. That is the least courtesy owed to any soul, and most especially to a kinswoman. It is, too, the smallest of honors—that a person be heard before judgment is made.

I am told that in your heart, you have fashioned your belief that our minds are already fixed against you, and that nothing you might say could turn us. Know then that this is not so. We are not yet resolved beyond all turning, save only in this: that you must be heard. If you think our summons some trap laid against your life or liberty, I charge you, lay aside that fear. For your ease and comfort, I do now swear, as I swear each morning and night before the Lord Creator and His Exalted, that any who come at my word under this summons shall go forth again unharmed in body, as they came—just as it was upon Lemon Hill, when all who stood under its peace departed under it also.

I cannot promise you the full issue of our council, for I am but one voice among many of our blood, and each must answer before God according to conscience. Your acts and the testimonies concerning them must be weighed, and in this, no man may pledge what the whole company shall decree. Yet this much I do bind upon my soul and upon the honor of our house: that you shall have safe-conduct to come and safe-conduct to depart; that none, by my will or sufferance, shall lay violent hand upon you while you stand under my word; and that you shall be heard without interruption, mockery, or threat.

If you will not believe my bare word, then let the memory of Lemon Hill stand witness. There, when men feared blood would surely flow, all held their hands and kept their oath; and not one who trusted in that promise was betrayed. What was done there before God and men, I am ready to do again, and more, for you who are of our own line.

Consider well, Astrid, what it is to bear a name and lineage in this frail world. Houses rise and fall; lands may pass to strangers; yet kin, once set at variance, leave a scar that endures longer than stone. I would not that, in time to come, clerks should write in their books that the children of Saint Carr hid from each other for reasons beyond me, when a simple meeting and a few honest words might have stayed the wound.

Therefore, I beseech you as your elder and your kinsman: come forth from hiding, not as one dragged in chains, but as a lady walking under her own will and under the surety of my pledge. Bring with you such witnesses, counselors, or servants as you deem needful for your comfort and safety. Choose, if you will, a place and hour fitting to your conscience, and I shall not gainsay it, so that only speech may pass between us and not steel. Should any come to harm by someone's hand, may that man or woman be cut down, may the church condemn them.

May the Lord Creator incline your heart to peace and not to fear, and may Saint Carr, our patron, intercede that we may yet be reconciled in some measure, or at least that truth be known between us.

Some saints days ago, I traveled due west to the realm of our allies in the Vale for a simple visit. When I arrived there with my family, it was as good a day as any. But as anyone in the cold Highlands knows well, it is when you least expect it that the shadow strikes. While the battle was lengthy, I will save you the excruciating details. In the ensuing conflict thereof, I, Davyd Edzar Colborn, and my son Ivar were grievously wounded. Were it not for the Amber Moon and one Theodred who rose in our defense I would perhaps not still draw breath. When the battle finally subsided, treatment was swift, and our allies in the Vale aided my son and me, showed us the kindness they would their own, and saved us from wounds that would have spelled my doom otherwise. Their alchemists again remind me why I took up the pestle and mortar. I extend my utmost thanks to the two healers who go by the names of Nemea and Liriana. Your acts will not be forgotten.

Likewise, I mention one Adelina van Leuven, who shall not be forgotten for saving my son’s life some years ago. Since then, I have wandered the land in search of a cure for his memory loss. I hope I can be forgiven for my tardiness. With this in mind:

It is thus that I declare that the Margraviate of Kazan will offer and confer those aforementioned saviors with the Mark of Sigryn, to use once in their lifetime as they wish, to be granted materials, alchemical reagents, potions, bardmancy, housemagery, and or the services of any of our blacksmiths. To make for them a weapon, tool, or item of any make as long as they can provide the rare materials themselves for what they wish crafted. Should the material not be of interest, then the full might of the Scyfling March may be called upon, for any matter, in your defense or otherwise. Though the Mark may only be used once and for one of these, pick wisely, dear saviors of ours.

Next, I wish to speak on two matters that have recently sat close to my heart. The Scyfling March has grown as Clans assemble and kinsmen return, so, likewise, have our needs. One Sigrid of Clan Raudrdag recently donated a significant amount of grain and produce, which is much needed and well distributed amongst the people. While a gesture was given to me for actions of mine, it would be undue for a Lord to take the good acts of their people for granted. It is thus in my capacity as protector of my people, and as Great Chieftain of the Scyflings that I extend to her the right to parcels of farmlands, ones she may steward on my behalf, in the lands she now calls home. Her clan, which she shares with her brother, Magnus, has served faithfully since the ancient past on the Isle of Vigr. I ask only that they continue to do so.

Finally, I extend an invitation, nay a summons, to Kazan for one Dima Kovachev. In recent times, your weary mind has been filled with guilt. Yet in me, I carry not an ounce of hatred for you nor a single intent to hold you indebted. However, it is clear to me now that no matter my intentions, you seem unwilling to accept this reality, nor is your mind willing to forgive what you seem to think are wrongs you’ve committed. As such, I ask you to complete either the Eagle’s Judgement or the Scyfling Trials. Once completed, you will know that any perceived debts have been paid in full.

The Clan of Rauðrdag (Rauthrdag in common), or Red Day/Dawn is a scyfling clan with a long history tracing back to the settling of the Scyfling Island of Vigr.

The clan is most adept in agriculture, animal husbandry and sailing. It is colloquially said that the clan is called ‘Red Day’ since members of the clan rise very early in the day to do their work. The actual origins of the name are more obscure though.

Despite not being martially inclined compared to other clans, they were well known in Vigr for their archery and prowess in ranged combat.

HISTORY | HISTORIK

ANCIENT HISTORY | ELDERN HISTORIK
The old history of clan Rauðrdag does not have exact recorded dates, as these events took place many millennia ago.

The ancient history of the clan begins with the exodus of the descendant races from Atlas, following the conclusion of the Vaeyl wars, approximately 257-260 E.S.

Many Scyflings sought new lands to settle for themselves, which led them to the isle of Vigr, with the first settlement Eldrun (firepath) being founded around a crater with a natural, continuous burning flame in the centre of it.

The clan was officially established by Rothar Flameforger, the second Burgrave of Eldrun. Rothar was appointed by the ruling house of Colborn as Burgrave due to the first burgrave leaving no heirs behind.

As such Rothar married Inkeri, an influential local horticulturist, officially forming the clan Rauðrdag to establish a lineage to govern Eldrun under the rulership of the Colborn High Chiefs.

After around 150 years of prosperous generational governance, the Isle of Vigr became victim to external raids by enigmatic sea-raiders. Their arrival was often heralded by oncoming fog, which while it served as a tell of their arrival it also obscured their landing.

The first few years started out as mere raids and skirmishes between the warriors of Eldrun, with the sea-raiders being repelled more often than not. But overtime, the amount of raiders would increase, and the island would be breached at different locations, spreading the levy of Eldrun thin.

This period of time led to constant conflict and fighting for roughly a 100 years, this period of time being referred to as the Marauder War. The eventual result being the defeat of the scyflings of Vigr, and their subsequent exodus from the island.

MODERN HISTORY
The Rauthrdags returned to the greater realms, accompanying the line of Osgod. While the Osgod line arrived directly in Haense in 522 E.S, the exact date of the Rauthrdag arrival to Aevos is unknown.

The Rauthrdags spent around 30 years establishing the fishing village Murtrborg (Fishborg) on the icy coast of Ailmere, as the environment was familiar to the reaches of Vigr to them. While they managed to fish and hunt enough to sustain themselves for a few decades, the pervasive influence of the Harrower provided too much of a challenge for the hold; agriculture, trade and sustainable hunting were impossible. Thus the settlement was disbanded.

The Clan of the Red Day made a formal arrival to Haense in the year 552 E.S. Chief Magnus Rauðrdag was appointed as Lord Marshal of the Brotherhood of Saint Karl in the year 559 E.S.

CLAN RITES

SKJIPRAUN | COMING OF AGE
The Skipraun, or simply Boat Trial, is a coming-of-age trial in which a Rauthrdag must construct a sailing vessel. This trial is taken at the age of 18. This special boat is called the Ofieskjip, or Spirit Boat, as it represents the linking of one’s being to the ship. As such, these ships are often decorated and stylised according to the builder’s personality.

The origin behind tradition came from superstitions, as a way for sailors far out at sea to be able to ‘navigate’ their way home, or if they perish their souls won't be lost.

There are no limits or restrictions to the size of the Ofieskjip, one can make a canoe or a longship if they are capable. However, the boat must pass several stress tests, such as being buoyant, transporting people, goods, and surviving storms. While the ship has to be functional, if it is ever used, it ultimately depends on the person who builds it.

An adult who has not completed the Skjipraun is considered to be a bearer of ill fortune, and their soul will be lost upon their demise. In the modern day, it is popular to have a Canonist Priest bless the boat.

ANZI á ELD | RETURN TO FIRE
The Return to Fire is the funerary ritual of the Clan, in which the deceased is laid to rest upon their Ofieskjip, which is then set alight. The burning of the body and the Ofieskjip allows the soul to be released and enter the seven skies, releasing the bond established at the Skjipraun.

The name of the ritual originates from the practice of using the fire from the Pit of Eld on the island of Vigr, which is considered holy. In the absence of this fire, a priest can bless a normal flame.

To perform a standard ‘in-the-ground’ burial, or not burning the person’s Ofieskjiip, is considered a punishment. A particular cruelty would be to display a slain enemy’s Ofieskjip, this great disrespect only being recorded a handful of times in history.

If a body of water is not available to perform the Anzi á Eld, it can be done on land. In this case, the ashes can be collected as a memento, though normally the deceased’s other belongings would be kept for such.

In the case of children passing early without performing a Skjipraun, it is customary for members of the deceased family to carve a piece from their own Ofieskjip and use those to perform the ritual as a symbol of communal spirit.

HJARTRAUN | HEART TRIAL
While in most Scylfing clans, the honouring of ancestors was performed at the coming of age trial. The Rauthrdags honour their ancestors when they are ready for work, which is typically done earlier than the Skjipraun.

The ancestor of which they honour is representative of their field of industry, though this is not strict and a Rauthrdag may pick an ancestor based on personal affinity.

An example would be a shipbuilder honouring Rothar Flameforge could perform a variety of trials such as simply building a ship, performing a hunt at sea, recovering shipwrecks or so on.

A patron ancestor may have multiple applicable ‘domains.’ To use Rothar Flameforge as an example again, an aspiring Redseer could perform a specific ceremony in his honour, such as carrying a flame across great distances.

Ancestors, their histories and trials are recorded in a special time, which is maintained by the Chief and the Elder of the clan.

CLAN TRADITIONS

JAFNADAG BLÓT | EQUINOX BLÓT
The two days in the year in which the length of day is equal to the length of, are days of great celebration, as they are representations of the true peak of the season. The Clan celebrates these two days with the Svaring Blót and  Auhun Blót.

SVARING BLÓT
During the spring, the waters around Vigr gradually warm, giving rise to a bloom of aquatic flora and fauna. By the time of the Equinox, the fish have matured, ready to be hunted.

People take to the seas to compete on how much fish one can gather, and a feast is thrown afterwards. The winner of the fishing competition is granted a fish bown crown and is to be given respect throughout the event.

AUHUN BLÓT
During this festival, all the harvested crops and mature livestock are brought in and prepared for a village wide feast. Usually some sort of contest of strength is involved, with the winner given the best meal.

THE GUEST
What distinguishes these festivals from other typical festivals is the incorporation of the old tradition Blót, in which a portion of the harvest, food or drink is given as an offering to a patron figure, in modern times this is a saint or blessed. However, as hold over from pagan practices, a secondary figure is carved, and kept distance to the side with a smaller table of offering.

This secondary figure is usually a generic carving of a scyfling man, but fully painted red or yellow. This figure is commonly referred to as “The Red Man,” “Brother Spring/Autumn” or just “The Guest.” The real name and purpose of this secondary figure has been long lost, but it is considered very rude to not “invite” this figure to the festivities.

In general, it is common practice for important events to have an enigmatic “guest.”

SBORGENDORGEN | ???
The Sborgendogren is a traditional duel initiated between two members of the clan. The origin of the name of this practice has been lost, but what the Sborgendorgen entails has not.

Either as a way to resolve conflict, or for recreation, the Rauthrdags equip themselves with hunting bows, a hunting dagger and survival equipment. Then the duelists enter a forest on opposite sides, and hunt for each other.

The duel takes a long time to set up and a long time for any actual conflict to happen, which gives ample time for the duelists to reconsider their positions. But for situations where there cannot be reconciliation, the Sborgendorgen is the ultimate form of victor’s justice.

CLAN HEIRARCHY

CHIEF
The Chief of the Clan, is the head of the Clan and historically has been the one to hold the title of Burgrave of Eldrun. The Chief of the clan has final authority on the decision-making within the clan.

ELDER
The Rauthrdags follow common scyfling customs in which the oldest person within the clan is granted the title of Elder. They provide counsel to the Chief, guidance to younger members, and maintain ceremonial and cultural traditions.

MEMBER
Members of the clan are those who are born into it, and have subsequently completed all their respective trials. Individuals who are married into the clan are given the same status and respect as ordinary members, provided the appropriate marriage rites are completed.

By her side, the Lord Caspian Colborn will serve as Kossir. He shall retain this position unless Dame Teodora is to resume her role as Kossir.

With this in mind, recruitment for the levy has become a top priority. All able-bodied men and women who wish to serve are encouraged to step forward and join the ranks.

Introduction:

Environmental changes and human necessity strongly influence a culture’s diet and meals as they must adapt to their surroundings and needs. Like all cultures, the Scyfling people have developed a unique and beautiful set of dishes and meals that befit what they need and what they enjoy. In order to elucidate the Scyfling culture and their habits more, this informative missive shall bring to light the dietary aspects, culinary traditions and meals of the culture.

Dietary Aspects:

A primary aspect of any Aevosian diet is meat, for which the Scyflings have many fine options and tastes. Common to most cultures, beef, mutton, goat and chicken are all popular with the Scyflings, often being reared by local farmers as produce for the nearby nobility. A more rare and uncommon mear, exclusive to the Scyflings is Reindeer. Reindeer is a meat that the hunters of a house will seek out and gather for special occasions. It is a rich and earthy taste that is often sought after by the nobility as it is both considered a delicacy and solely for special occasions.

Fish is also an important part of the Scyfling diet, found in many meals and snacks. In the local seas, the Scyflings fish for both cod and herring, the latter being a fish that takes quite a few different shapes. Herring is often found to be fermented or pickled in order to preserve the meat of the fish so as to ensure it will always have it to eat in times of low stocks. In addition, cod and herring are both often fried when people wish for fresh fish after a long day of fishing. In the local lakes and rivers, salmon is often sourced by those Scyfling fishermen, similarly fried like the other fish but can be cured in order to create ‘Gravlax’ a local dish of high renown.

The harsher northern lands are often not receptive to growing crops, with few being able to weather the climate related obstacles. Peas and kale are known to be two of the only greens able to grow amongst the aggressive weather that surrounds the lands of the Scyfling people. These are often grown in smaller allotments besides a homestead that are tended to daily to ensure that the weather does not affect them too harshly. Root vegetables are much more commonly grown because their place under the earth allows them to grow without the weather causing much issue. rutabaga, turnips, potatoes, carrots and parsnips are the most common vegetables, used in the majority of dishes.

Much like with vegetables, the grains that the Scyflings grow must be handpicked for its ability to endure the abrasive force of nature that may hinder it. For this, the oat, barley and rye grain crops are most often picked, grown in large fields where they can grow together, the weather being less effective when they’re in groups. Each of these crops can be ground into a flour to make bread, pancakes or similar baked goods as well as various types of beers. Barley may also be added to stews in order to thicken it as the grain will become more gelatinous and provide a heartier dish. The oats are often also used in porridge and bars with honey in order to provide perservable breakfasts.

Finally, dairy, much like in all human cultures, is important within the day to day meals of the Scyfling people. Milk at its basis is a staple of any culture, used within drinks, breakfasts and various meals as it is a very versatile product. However, in the northern regions, preservation is always key due to the natural challenges presented but the climate. Filmjölk is a fermented milk that provides a fitting preservable resolution to this problem, used prominently within breakfast foods, it may also be used within baking and drinks to offer a fitting alternative to the issues presented with the aging and souring of the milk which typically is not edible after some weeks. Butter and cheese are both quite common, with churning of the butter being a weekly occurrence and large cheese cellars holding wheels of cheese that have been flavoured with nuts foraged in local forests.

Culinary Traditions:

As priorly alluded to, food preservation is of utmost importance within the Scyfling families and traditions as both production and rotting of food is a high concern to all. The preservation of food, most commonly meat and fish, though also milk and vegetables, is done in many different manners. The first is pickling, where using vinegar, water, sugar as well as dill and peppercorns for flavour, the Scyfling shall place herrings or root vegetables to ensure that they are preserved for a far longer time, and also grant them a far better flavour. Fermentation is also an option and can take various different routes, often using salt water that is changed out twice in order to cure the fish or vegetable to ensure its continued sustenance. Finally smoking is the final form, in which salted meat or fish would be hung above a slow burning wood fire, allowing the food to slowly cure and inherit the smoky taste of the wood fire. This meat is often the chosen sustenance of hunters or travellers as it carries well and remains incredibly palatable.

One of the most versatile dishes known to descendant kind, the stew is an extremely hearty meal that can be made with several different options. Commonly it requires a source of meat that is either fish or livestock, a source of grain or potato and a variety of vegetables. Often the grain will come in the form of barley pearls which will soak up gravy that the stew is cooked in and grow, becoming more gelatinous and making the meal a lot thicker as the liquid is reduced. Stews tend to be used for feast days, in which a large group of people come for dinner and when this occurs the meals are usually prepared in several large pots to ensure that everyone gets the same dish and great amounts of it. 

In order to gather the fish or rarer meat, a group of Scyfling must go hunting or fishing to provide for their family. Fishing is done upon boats with groups of around six to eight, in order to ensure a healthy amount of people fishing as well as those who see to the boats steady traversal through the water. While most tend to take these larger groups on boat trips down rivers or seas, it is not unheard of for a smaller group to take a spear and net in order to catch unsuspecting Salmon in shallower areas. Hunting, much like fishing, is done within larger groups, however this is more for the sense of protection, as both predatory animals and bandits can cause great issues for those wishing to gather for their kin. These hunters shall take two spears, a bow and a skinning knife with them as they seek Reindeer, Moose and other animals that are considered to be a little more rare due to their undomesticated spirit. These hunts can last up to a week, and the return of a hunting party is a well celebrated event.

Meals and Recipes:

Now that you have garnered a greater understanding of the Scyfling diet and culinary habits, you can begin cooking Scyfling food. Each meal will be explained as to what it is and if relevant, when it is served, followed by a simple to follow recipe so that you can make it yourself and enjoy the delights of the Scyfling culture in all its form.

Semla:

Eaten mostly on holidays, Semla is a simple but delicious sweet treat that is a favourite amongst the children and a guilty pleasure of their elders. Utilising almonds that are grown predominantly in small orchards nearby homesteads and keeps. This is an easy recipe that provides for a wonderful treat for the whole family. 

• Start by crushing almonds in a mortar, adding them to a bowl with the white of an egg, sugar and a spoon of water. Mix until it forms a paste and set that aside.
• Then, mix a small amount of bread flour with equal parts of water and milk, heat upon a stove until bubbling and thick. Set aside on a plate to cool.
• Mix flour, sugar and salt together before adding the cooled mixture of bread flour, water and mix, combining it together. 
• Combine a sprinkling of yeast and milk together and add to the dough, mixing it into a dough like substance while also adding butter. Set this aside overnight in a cool area.
• Divide the dough into equal parts and brush an egg mixture over it before placing it into the baking heart to cook.
• When golden brown, remove the Semla and allow them to cool.
• Once cool, you must hollow out the inside of the bun for the filling.
• To make the filling, add the almond paste with milk, cream and sugar to form the almondy cream which is then piped into the bun.
• Place the top of the bun on it and dust with sugar.

Pea Soup:

A simple and elegant beginning to a meal, the Scyfling Pea Soup is an easily made soup that is most often enjoyed as a prelude to a far larger main course. Made with peas, onions, carrots and ham, alongside various herbs, this is a perfect soup for all to enjoy. 

• Add peas, chopped onions and carrots, an onion with two cloves pressed into it and a bone of ham to water and bring it to a boil.
• Remove any foam from the top of the water and allow for it to simmer for ninety minutes.
• Remove the skins of the peas from the surface and then take two or three cups aside and run it through a sieve in order to get a pureed form of the liquid. 
• Return the puree to the pot and allow it to continue to simmer for an hour.
• Season with thyme, ginger, salt and pepper.
• Remove the ham and the clove studded onion and cut the ham up into smaller pieces.
• Allow to cook for another ten minutes and then serve up.

Kroppkakor:

Perfect for lunch on its own or for dinner alongside vegetables and a sauce, Kroppkakor is akin to a dumpling. Typically made with meat, vegetables, berries and nuts, it is a beautiful mix of various flavours, further enhanced with herbs and spices creating a wonderful recipe. It can be made in many different ways, but this is a traditional recipe.

• Peel the skin of potatoes, boil them until soft and then drain them, allowing all moisture to leave it.
• Add butter to the potatoes and mash. Leave until cooled and then add salt, flour and egg yolks, mixing until dough-like. Set that aside.
• Chop thymes, onions and cured pork roughly. Fry them together until golden brown.
• Add diced mushrooms, hazelnuts and kale to the pan and continue to fry until cooked completely. Sprinkle allspice in.
• Portion the potato up equally and turn them into flat discs.
• Put a spoonful of filling in the middle of each disc and roll each one into a ball in order to form the dumpling.
• Add butter to a pan and fry, searing the dumplings, ensuring that they are brown and smell nutty.
• Serve alongside a berry jam or a chicken gravy.

Kalops:

Stew is a staple of the Scyfling diet and Kalops is a traditional form of Scyfling stew. Made with beef, vegetables, potatoes and wine, this is an incredibly popular stew, especially for large feasts among families. The dish is easy for anyone to cook and is most often cooked in huge pots for the aforementioned feasts.

• Cube your raw beef and dry with a cloth or paper. Coat it in flour thereafter.
• Dice some onions and then mince garlic very finely before placing that aside.
• Place butter into the pot and cook the beef, waiting until all sides of the beef are completely brown and then set aside.
• Add some more butter and then the onions, cook until clear and saute the garlic.
• Add some flour and mix so that the flour covers the garlic and the onions.
• Add the beef once more and allow to mix with the vegetables.
• Add red wine and allow it to boil for a minute before adding water to cover the meat.
• Add carrots, beef broth, peppercorns, allspice, bay leaves and allow to boil for an hour.
• Consistently check the stew until thick, remove the bay leaves and allspice.
• Serve alongside pickled beetroot.

Pepparkakor:

Pepparkakor are ginger thins, easy to make and very delectable. These are an invention of the Scyfling people and due to their sustainability and consistent taste, they are used by hunters and merchants as they travel around the continent.

• Mix butter, cloves, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon in a bowl until completely mixed.
• Heat sugar, syrup and molasses until the sugar has melted and allow to cool for ten to fifteen minutes.
• Combine the sugar mixture and the butter mixture, then allow it to cool until room temperature.
• Mix the flour into the mixture until dough like and leave for eight hours in a cool area.
• Use ferrum disks to cut them into thin shapes, place on a baking tray and cook for five to six minutes.
• Allow to cool and decorate with icing.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Principality of Slesvik traces its history back to the days of Anadan ‘the Wise’ Kolburanaz, who united the many Scyfling Clans of the far highlands of Aegis, colloquially known as the Curzken Highlands. At his behest, the first far north city of Slesvik was constructed where the Sles River bay (or vik in the language of the Scyflings) met Lake Sken. From Slesvik, Anadan ruled as the first High Chief of the Scyflings and borne from him was the line from which Colborn stems. Through the generations, the descendants of Anadan carried the torch as High Chief, men and women of various make and greatness. It took imperial incursion in the days of Athera to finally splinter the Scyfling unity. By the time St. Carr made it north to reclaim and remake the realm, that ambition was laid to rest, not out of weakness, but to unify all the peoples of the north under one banner, that of Haense; culminating into the Barbanov-Colborn Pact.

THE BARBANOV-COLBORN PACT

Since youth, the young Patriarchs of their respective families dreamed of the north. Karl was lulled to sleep by his aunt’s tales of the Raev of old before their southern migration, and Carr could still remember the gentle northern wind in his earliest memories. It wasn’t until Otto the Bald stoked their inner flame in the halls of Briarwood that they found conviction. Long years were spent uniting the North; none in the South thought it possible, and many more hoped to make it never occur. However, with each companion gathered along the way and with each trial overcome, eventually, they had a northern state that was the culmination of their effort. After all they had experienced and done, they often grew nostalgic, thinking of simpler days, the days that both were easily confused for each other due to their similarities, raven-black hair, and the eyes of the Highlanders of old. Sitting before the hearth of flame in the Ducal Castle of Siegrad, they spoke so:

“My Lord, I see you as family, and I wish for you to know that no matter what, I will follow you wherever the road leads or ends. . . I would wish that my sons and daughters could share the bond that we share. . . so that they may serve your children just as I have served you.” —Carr Colborn

“Let us swear then as brothers and make a pact worthy of drinking to. Only history will know if it will stand the test of time. But I have confidence in you; not once has my trust in you led me astray, not since youth, nor now. Let our brotherhood be the steel that binds the North, unbroken and enduring.” —Karl Barbanov

THE IVELD OATH

The Oath taken by House Colborn before the Crown is essential for continuing the pact. It often follows shortly after the coronation but is sometimes delayed due to uncontrollable circumstances by the Crown. The Crown has commonly referred to this event as the “Pact Dinner.” The observed ceremonies of the occasion start with a short social event where the current members of House Colborn are introduced to the royals. This is followed by the Iveld Oath proper, where the current leaders of both families swear an oath before each other and the grave of either Karl or Carr, which is as follows:

THE TRIALS OF SLESVIK

Since the unification of the Highlander realm, there have been few holders of the Title of Slesvik. So far in Haense’s history, only Petyr I and Amaya of Venzia held the title prior to their enthronement as Monarchs. From this, one can garner both how prestigious a status it is and how challenging a task the Trials tend to be. Just to begin such a journey, one must convince five adult Scyflings of recognized clans to speak in their favor to the High Chief. In this private gathering and exchange of words, the leader of House Colborn will decide if the reasons for support are sufficient, and if not, then reasons will be provided. If the support is recognized, the would-be Prince or Princess of Barbanov will be considered an aspirant and allowed to begin their first Trial. Should there be several aspirants, whoever completes the Trials first shall ultimately be given the title of Slesvik.

THE TRIAL OF HAMAR

True strength lies not in the weight you carry, but in the will that endures when all else would yield. The hammer may bend your back and blister your hands, but it is the heart that refuses to break that forges a warrior’s spirit.

THE TRIAL OF TORVALD

Wisdom is not found in the ease of answers, but in the struggle of questions, where the mind sharpens like a blade against stone. Knowledge gained without effort is like the morning mist—quick to fade; but that which is earned through toil becomes the mountain that withstands all storms.

THE TRIAL OF BJORN

THE TRIAL OF KOMRI

A single tree may stand tall, but a forest weathers the fiercest winds; true strength is found when hearts and hands join as one. Victory is not claimed by the lone warrior, but by those who fight as brothers, each lending their strength so that all may rise.

THE TRIAL OF DAGR

The deepest truths are not found in the stars above, but in the quiet depths of the soul; only those who seek within will find the light to guide their way. Greatness is not a gift bestowed, but a flame kindled from spirit, nourished by patience and the courage to see oneself truly.

THE TRIAL OF ANADAN

True wealth is not measured in gold, but in the bonds of kinship; a leader’s heart beats strongest when it beats for their people. A kingdom’s strength lies not in its walls, but in the trust and unity of those within; to lead is to treasure every soul as if it were your own.

THE TRIAL OF SIGRYN

Justice is a blade that cuts through shadow; to wield it with conviction is to be the light that evil fears. True justice does not waver in the face of darkness, for it is forged in the fires of resolve and strikes where no wrong can hide.

THE TRIAL OF VALKAN

To embrace destiny is to face the storm head-on, unyielding, for the fearless heart knows that the path forward is carved by those who dare to tread it. True courage lies not in avoiding failure, but in rising to meet the same challenge again and again, for even the fiercest waves break against the unbroken will.

FACING THE THREE

Upon the completion of the Trials, the victorious Prince or Princess is to be brought before the founding three of Clan Kolburanaz (House Colborn). Present are to be any members of the Clannting that wish to lay witness to the occasion. While the Prince or Princess is kneeling, the Andelorn Circlet is to be placed upon them by the Colborn Patriarch or Matriarch. In such a way, the Title is given, and the Prince or Princess swears the following Oath of Slesvik:

THE DUTIES OF THE PRINCE OR PRINCESS OF SLESVIK

The Prince or Princess of Slesvik has many duties befitting their station. Not only are they to live and represent the Scyfling way, but they are likewise to lead the Clannting and ensure its success and safety. Any failure of the Scyflings has settled squarely on their shoulders and theirs alone. Men and women are only as good as their leaders. It is, therefore, paramount that the Prince or Princess ensure the continued success of the Clans. While harrowing to some, anyone capable of completing the trials should surely welcome the challenge. But each holder is likely to approach their station differently; some are warriors, some are of the pen, and many variations exist between them. But one thing is true amongst them: they, and they alone, wear the Andelorn Circlet.

THE CLANN AETENING

The Clann Aetening, or as it is most commonly called, the Clannting, is the meeting of all Scyfling Clans. Here, any matters of import are discussed and decided. These may range from issues of honor to direction and various rites and ceremonies that may be observed or called upon. It is often followed by a grand feast where the Clans make merry. THE PRIVILEGES OF THE CLANNTING

DECLARATION OF VERKRIG

The Clannting declares a Verkrig or Vengeance War if a great foe or enemy of the Clans needs their collective effort to be slain. Such a declaration is not taken lightly, and from such a day, it is the Scyflings priority, above all else, to complete this task. You can read more about Verkrig HERE.

CALLING THE LEIDANG

The Scyflings, by nature, are adventurous and seek it both for thrill and to sate their curiosity. Thus, The Clannting may call upon all the Clans through a Leidang to embark on an expedition or excursion by sea or land. While not all Scyflings must participate, each clan is expected to present one man or woman and offer resources that might aid in the endeavor. CALLING THE VILDJAKTR

The Clannting will often call a Vildjaktr or Wild Hunt as it is called in common. As the name implies, these are grand hunts of honor, glory, and prestige that any Scyfling might participate in. They are often called to feed the Clans or prepare for feasts and seasonal festivals. The most successful hunter is allowed the glory of blowing the great Kroghorn at the next Clannting. SVAERDKLANG SEREMONI

Since the days of the Curzken Highlands, the Scyflings have had their women and men carry the sword as warriors. To ensure strength never fades and that their blades remain sharp, the Clang of Swords, or the Meeting of Blades as it is commonly called, is set up. It is here that warriors might challenge each other and showcase their prowess. The final victor and champion is made Lendmann of Polaris, and a runestone is erected in their honor. SKEPMAKERI SEREMONI

Leidang takes a heavy toll and needs ships worthy of the sea that are strong enough to stand against its tests and many challenges. To ensure such is the case, the Skepmakeri Seremoni, or Shipbuilding Ceremony, as it is commonly called, is observed. Likewise, there are times when significant Scyfling figures that have passed on to the afterlife must be put to rest through boat funerals. To address these matters, the Clannting will request that artisans among the Scyflings present their designs and vessels before them during the next meeting. THE PURPOSE OF THE CLANNTING

The Clannting is one of the most important institutions of the Scyflings. It not only creates a structure of hierarchy and leadership but is also one of the legacies created to unify all the clans beneath a single banner. Since the ancient past, this has been the primary means for Clans to settle disputes, make declarations, and call for social gatherings and ceremonies. While maintaining order is undoubtedly a priority. The Clannting’s foremost priority is ensuring its people's social and cultural prosperity. This is not a place to get bogged down in creating laws or forging definitions, but rather a place to bring the people together, socialize, and ensure they have something to look forward to in the coming months and years. To ensure this, the Clannting is only called when enough matters of import make it worthwhile. It is not a pre-scheduled affair and often occurs sporadically at the behest of the High Chief and Prince or Princess of Slesvik. It is important to note that the Clannting always adheres to and follows the laws of whichever nation the Scyflings call home.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CLANNTING

While not unsophisticated, the Clannting's structure is divided into two parts: the High Seats, which are the leaders of the Scyflings and the head of the proceedings, and the Division of Tingmenn, which represents the people and their various interests, such as the clans, warriors, artisans, and the clanless. Everyone below the High Seats has one vote and an equal voice to speak at the Clannting.

THE HIGH SEATS

The High Seats, which includes the High Chief of the Scyflings and the Prince or Princess of Slesvik, has one singular duty, to lead and ensure the smooth proceedings of the Clannting. It is likewise solely their ability to call upon such a gathering. While they likewise have a vote on any matters. The final decision at a Clannting cannot be overturned as per Anadan’s Principles, where the will of the people is above all else, and a ruler is to serve their people, and not the other way around.

THE DIVISION OF TINGMENN

The Tingmenn consists of the two Elder Bloodlines, the High Seer, and the Chiefs of the Clans, Burgrave and Lendmenn. While each may have their own status, purpose, and position, they are commonly called Tingmenn. Should any one of the seated of their positions be incapable of representing themselves, they may pick a representative of their choosing, but proof of such must be provided to the High Seats. While each gets a seat and a vote, they may not speak over or interrupt the High Chief and Prince or Princess of Slesvik. I - THE BLOOD OF EIRIK

Representing the adventurous spirit of EIRIK, their ancestor who pioneered a new Scyfling homeland in Eroch, his descendants are reserved a seat so they can represent his spirit.

II - THE BLOOD OF OSGOD

Representing the martial spirit of OSGOD, their ancestor marshaled the first army of Haense and protected it at its weakest. His descendants are reserved a seat so they can represent his spirit.

III - THE HIGH SEER

Representing the Scyfling Seers, who are knowledgeable on the spiritual and supernatural forces of the world.

IV - THE BURGRAVE

Representing the local government of the Scyfling March and selected by the High Chief of Colborn.

V - THE CLAN CHIEFS

Representing each of the recognized Scyfling Clans of which they lead.

VI - THE LENDMANN OF POLARIS

Representing the warriors and their interests and opinions.

VII - THE LENDMANN OF CAERANDEL

Representing the wisdom of Anadan, giving insight and perspective on matters of old. This seat will always be held by the eldest Scyfling with a natural lifespan, but it can be resigned from and will then pass to the second oldest living Scyfling.

VIII - THE LENDMANN OF LAUTHLI

Representing the clanless from which they are elected by their fellows. So that their voices might be heard even before they have made a Clan of their own.

IX - THE LENDMANN OF KONSTEN

Representing the artisans whose dedication to their craft ensures the well-being and fulfilment of the people.

X - THE LENDMANN OF ALVENHEIM

Representing the elven Scyflings and their bloodline, which grows forever fewer.

THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CLANNTING

Prior to any Clannting, a Scyfling Clan is made responsible for providing food, baked goods, and sweets for the audience. As hosts of the Clan Hall, they are also expected to engage in small talk and conversation with those who are there as spectators. The hosts for the next gathering will be selected by the High Seats and announced at the beginning of the event. With this in mind, the official proceedings from start to finish are as follows below:

THE CALL OF THE KROGHORN

The Kroghorn is an ancient artifact made from the horn of the great beast Kragothar, who once threatened the peace of the Curzken Highlands, leading to the first Declaration of Verkrig. The one who has the honor of blowing the horn will ceremonially signal the opening of the Clan Hall. Once the horn has been blown, everyone may enter the hall.

OOC NOTE

THE ARRIVAL OF THE TINGMENN

Leading up to the start of the Clannting, the Tingmenn will announce their arrival upon entering. They should declare their full title and name, for example, “The Lendmann of Polaris, Carr Colborn has arrived.” If someone arrives after the Clannting has started, they must remain silent while taking their seat, as no special privilege is given to those who are tardy. THE MATTERS AT HAND

Scyflings have always placed emphasis on the hand and arm. Just as a friend shakes someone's wrist or arm instead of their hand to showcase trust and closeness, matters are dealt with up close, not from afar. Once all the Tingmenn who have declared their arrival are seated, the High Seats will direct conversation and topics to initiate discussion and votes. This is also the time when any witnesses or testimonies may be called upon from the spectators or Tingmenn. When such topics have come to an end, and if time permits, the High Seat will allow the Tingmenn to bring up any matter of regard.

THE JURIDA

When a dispute between clans needs to be investigated and understood to its fullest before being presented before the Clannting, it is the duty of the Chief Jurida holder of Durinnar, known as the hammer of Justice, to conduct the investigation. The Chief Jurida is often a learned hunter of great wisdom who carries the spirit of Sigryn in their heart. They are selected at the behest of the High Seats whenever their duties are needed, and the position is rarely held at length. It is considered a great crime and brings shame to the Clan to attack or inconvenience the Jurida. Likewise, the Jurida should always show their hammer, Durinnar, to indicate that they are acting in their official capacity. To prevent misunderstandings, the hammer is only in their possession when the High Chief or the Prince or Princess of Slesvik has deemed it necessary.

A declaration made by the Clannting is a call to action for all Scyfling Clans. It includes everyone, and everyone is expected to play their part in accomplishing the task at hand. However, such declarations are not made lightly and rarely occur even once in a lifetime, let alone twice.

It does not require the participation of all Scyfling Clans and their kin, but rather needs at least one representative from each. Callings are often social events and do not have to be in response to an emergency or problem.

In the olden days of House Colborn, under the vassalage of Prince Alexander Horen, was commanded to raise a levy force for service in war and maintenance of law and order. This early force, dubbed The Carrenguard in honor of Saint Carr Colborn, was mostly composed of Scyfling peasants. However, the Colborn lords maintained an elite host of soldiers who were granted the rank of ehrengarde, or “honor guard”. 

With the call to arms of King Marius III, House Colborn will once again raise its banners and its arms in remembrance of the special relationship between the pact-bound Saint Karl and Saint Carr. Having answered the call to serve since the days of the Duchy of Haense, House Colborn takes great pride in its centuries of service. With a fiefdom on the border of the Kingdom, the Margraviate of Kazan—the Scyfling March—serves as the bulwark against attacks targeting the Haeseni farmlands. Given this responsibility, it is of the utmost priority that House Colborn hold fast against threats, foreign and domestic. 

The Lord Osgod Colborn, Margrave of Kazan and Protector of the Scyflings, has thus seen fit to reinstate the levy of House Colborn by reviving The Carrenguard. The Margrave has also commissioned from the Scyfling smiths the finest silver armor and weaponry to equip this new force. In command of this most esteemed host, Lord Osgod has designated Ser Joakim Colborn as the first Captain of the Carrenguard. Under his command, the levy of the Scyfling March is thus instructed to mobilize for the maintenance of the King’s peace. They shall patrol the roads and borders, protecting the King’s lands from evil of all sorts.

Those who serve with righteous will and those who serve with pious strength are invited into the halls of Kazan where a warm meal, made bed, and ample storage await. You are kin under the banner of Colborn, and are treated as such so long as your oath is held true. The training grounds of The Carrenguard extend from the barracks to the surrounding cliffside and mountain ranges. The landscape provides suitable environments for training the mind and body.

Rekrut

Let any who have the heart to serve bear the title of Rekrut. May they prove they are more than the gambeson they wear and that their will is stronger than most. The rank of rekrut is not a permanent one, but a stepping stone to finding one’s path through dedication and perseverance.

Hirdann

The first step to serving the cause. Rekruts who are accepted into the fold are promoted to Hirdann, and afforded their mail and plate baring the same Carrsten Tree—the symbol of House Colborn and the namesake of its founder.

Ehrengarde

The select few warriors that compose the personal retinue of the head of House Colborn. They are the most capable warriors, entrusted with the safety of the head of the House and their kin.

Kossir

The Kossir is the lieutenant of the retinue and the second in command. The Kossir is the direct subordinate to the Kapten and aids them in the accomplishment of their duties. A Kapten might designate certain areas of their duties to the Kossir, such as quartermastery or field command.

Kapten

The Head of House Colborn has many duties, and in their accomplishment, they seek the aid of experienced councilors. One such councilor is the Kapten of the Carrenguard, who is tasked with command of the Colborn levy. In addition to command of the retinue in battle, the Kapten also ensures the training, arming, provisioning, housing, and maintenance of Saint Carr’s retinue.
