OVERVIEW

Lethia, the Swan Princess, is one of the most elusive Mani, a spirit of still waters and sharp judgment. She is the patroness of swans, and by extension, the virtues the swan embodies: grace, fidelity, elegance, and beauty. Among the Mali’ame, she is remembered as a figure of quiet strength whose calm is never mistaken for weakness. Her elegance is not decoration - it is discipline. Her beauty is not vanity - it is order and harmony manifest.

When she is spoken of, it is in measured tones: a white swan cutting a clean line across a fogged lake, eyes catching the first light of dawn. Some recount seeing her as a woman cloaked in plumes, voice ringing like a horn across the water. She does not seek adoration. She enforces standards. In her presence, oath-breakers feel small; the steadfast feel seen.

Unlike the Mani of the hunt or the battlefield, Lethia governs what is hard to grasp: loyalty that does not bend, poise that does not crack, and beauty that arises from balance rather than excess. She is feared less for fury than for judgment that lands without drama and leaves no doubt.

WHY ELEGANCE, WHY GRACE

ELEGANCE is economy - nothing wasted, nothing loud for its own sake. Watch a swan in flight: wings beat with measured force, long neck fixed, body aligned. Lethia’s elegance is the standard by which artisans, warriors, and leaders measure themselves. A crafted blade that holds its edge, a speech that says only what is needed, a ritual executed cleanly - these are offerings to her in practice, not just at shrines. To carry oneself with elegance is to move with intent and clarity, refusing clutter in form or thought.

GRACE is control under pressure. On the water’s surface, the swan is calm; beneath, its feet work hard. Grace is not the absence of effort - it is effort mastered. Lethia’s grace is what keeps a warrior’s hand steady, a lover honest when truth cuts, a mourner upright when grief crushes. It is the visible calm that comes from inner discipline. Where others see softness, she sees strength held in reserve.

FIDELITY is the line you do not cross. Swans pair for long spans, guarding nests with a ferocity many underestimate. Lethia tests oaths because she knows bonds define a life. Fidelity in her sight is not blind loyalty; it’s chosen loyalty - upheld when it costs something. A vow made in her name is a ledger entry, and she balances ledgers.

BEAUTY is alignment. In nature, beauty appears where forces balance: light on still water, the geometry of wings, the arc of a neck. To Lethia, beauty is the signal that things fit - that form serves purpose and purpose suits form. She rejects gaudiness. She favors the clean and the true. Where her blessing rests, work becomes precise, places become orderly.

WORSHIP AND REVERENCE

Lethia is not a Mani of convenience. Those who come before her do so with clear purpose: lovers swearing oaths, warriors training composure, artisans seeking the clean line, leaders anchoring a code. A prayer to her is never casual. To speak her name lightly is to invite her disdain.

Shrines to Lethia stand by still waters. Offerings are set on polished stone or mirror-bright metal. Silence is part of the rite - not emptiness, but respect for the standard she sets. A swan feather found unbidden is treated as a contract more than a gift.

RITUAL OF WORSHIP

The dawn rite is the most practiced offering to Lethia:

1. A garland is woven of pale blossoms, bound neatly with reed or silver thread.
    
2. A naturally shed feather is set in the center.
    
3. At sunrise, the garland is placed on still water. The supplicant bows three times and speaks only truths.
    

If the wreath moves outward with purpose, she has heard. If it turns in slow circles, your intent lacks clarity. If it sinks, you are found wanting - false in word or unworthy in aim.

OFFERINGS

• Naturally shed swan feathers (NEVER plucked).
   
• Pale blossoms, especially lilies.
   
• Twin offerings (two candles, two cups, two loaves) to honor fidelity.
   
• Silver or polished mirrors, symbols of elegance and self-scrutiny.
   
• Well-made tools or garments built for function first and form second.

CULTURAL NOTES

• Reed “Swan Rings” are worn by travelers at crossings. If the ring unravels before the far shore, the traveler returns and tries again the next day.
   
• Swan feathers are sacred. Plucking one is an offense; only shed feathers may be kept, and they are stored wrapped in clean cloth.
   
• Funerary practice: two white birds are set on the water. If they part and take different routes, the family holds vigil again the next night; if they keep together, the rite is complete.
   
• Among Mali, to swear “by the Swan’s Mirror” is to accept inspection - of your work, your words, your conduct. Refusing such inspection after swearing it is a public disgrace.

Since the Dawn of the Wood Elves, led by Irrin Sirame's guidance, the Wild Faith has remained the foundational religion embraced by these people. The worship of the Wild Gods is the cornerstone upon which elnarnsae'ame was established, and to this day, the same ancient rituals persist, and the same prayers are recited. This enduring liturgy has withstood the test of centuries, enduring fractures and migrations, and it continues to hold a cherished place in the hearts of the mali'ame of today.

Ritualistic Offering

In every location inhabited by Elves who adhere to the Wild Faith, you will find sacred shrines dedicated to the Mother, Father, and Mani. These shrines serve as designated sites where the devout must make their offerings. The gifts presented to the Gods are cast into a sacred fire, where they are consumed by flames, symbolically offered to the Aspects and Mani. Traditional Aspectist doctrine prescribes that offerings should be made to the Aspects and Mani primarily on three distinct occasions.

* When enjoying the bounty of Nature, to give thanks

* When seeking a boon during a time of need

* When called for, in Rituals

Devotees of Elnarnsae'ame have the liberty to present any gift to the Wild Gods, provided it carries suitable meaning and symbolism. The more valuable a gift, whether in material wealth or sentimental significance, the greater the likelihood that a follower's prayer will resonate with the Aspects and their benevolent emissaries.

The potential offerings are indeed limitless, but within the Wild Faith, certain ritual offering archetypes exist, each bearing particular connotations, themes, and implications. Adhering to these archetypes ensures that the intended symbolism is consistently conveyed to the Aspects and Mani.

Gifts that originate from the earth often symbolize growth, revitalization, and the essence of life. These offerings are most fitting in rituals when one seeks blessings associated with health and sustainability. Making an offering with a value determined by your personal attachment to it is a prevalent theme in Aspectist traditions. These offerings often include items with sentimental significance, such as a gift from your family, something you personally crafted, like a sword or a vase, or anything similar. These "personal" offerings are typically presented when seeking the Aspects' guidance in matters concerning one's own self, as opposed to the world at large. In certain instances, particularly involving offerings of blood, they are used to solemnize promises and commitments between individuals.

In addition to the aforementioned offering archetypes, there are a few flowers in the Tiva language, each bearing meanings that render them universal offerings suitable for all rituals dedicated to the Aspects and Mani:

Among the countless rituals dedicated to the Aspects and each Mani, three stand out as particularly elaborate, and they are reserved for three of the most significant moments in an elf's life: the birth of a new child, the union of two souls in marriage, and the farewell of an elf from this realm.

Celebration of New Life

When a Wood Elven woman discovers that she is expecting a child, it marks one of life's most joyous occasions. Priests of the Wild Faith frequently accompany a woman on her journey through pregnancy, offering guidance through prayers for strength and ensuring the safety of both the mother and her child. Somewhere between the midpoint of her pregnancy and the onset of childbirth, a celebration is organized to applaud the expectant mother and present offerings to Bolomormaa, seeking future and ongoing protection.

Vows of Matrimony

A trained Priest of the Wild Faith is essential for a couple to formalize their union, which takes place in a location considered sacred to the Aspects. Such places include shrines, Druidic Groves, or areas teeming with abundant Nature.

Deliverance of the Last Rites

When a follower of the Wild Faith passes away, their kin offer a prayer to the great Aspects above and invoke the patron Mani of their clan. This act guides the departed soul to either journey into the faerie realm or be reborn in a new, pure form. Regardless, the physical body is returned to the embrace of nature, achieved through one of three distinct rites: the Rite of Earth, Fire, and Water.

As elven warriors prepare to enter the battlefield, they partake in a ritual involving the consumption of Cernunnos' essence, a vial of boar's blood, and speak the following words.

Healers seeking Cerridwen's grace when tending to a patient often perform a sacred ritual that involves consuming Cerridwen's essence of sacred Attunement springwater. During this ritual, they may speak the following prayer.

As a whole, they are collectively referred to as the Wild Gods, a divine representation of the enduring connection between the forest dwellers and the natural world they hold in such high regard.

The Aspects of Nature

The Aspects are regarded as eternal and hold various interpretations within different sects of elnarnsae'ame. Some consider them the highest Gods of Nature, while others perceive them as the very essence of Nature itself—the unspoken, intangible primal energy that courses through all living things. The most prevalent representation of the Aspects takes the form of a symbolic duality, seen as two complementary halves of a single entity responsible for the creation of all life and their earthly emissaries, the Mani.

Cerridwen

The Mother

Also known as the Green Lady or Cerridwen, the Mother represents the matriarchal aspect of the divine Balance. She is often depicted as a woman adorned with leaves and vines, her ethereal form shimmering in the diverse manifestations of nature. Cerridwen embodies the Aspect of birth, growth, life, and the nurturing essence of the world.

According to the beliefs of the wood elves, all lush flora and fauna owe their existence and flourishing to Cerridwen's tender care. They thrive under her nurturing touch until the time comes for Cernunnos to claim them. The Green Lady is invoked in prayers, particularly when seeking bountiful harvests and when tending to the wounds of others. Her divine influence is sought to ensure the prosperity and vitality of the natural world.

Also known as the Horned Lord or Cernunnos, the Father represents the patriarchal aspect of the natural balance. He is commonly depicted as a robust figure with the majestic horns of a stag adorning his head and a longbow firmly in his grasp. Cernunnos embodies the Aspect of the hunt, the realm of predators, and the natural instincts of survival.

Within the beliefs of wood elves, all animals are believed to share a profound connection with Cernunnos. Prayers are often directed to the Horned Lord to invoke luck and success in hunting, whether the quarry be non-sentient creatures or those with sentience. While Cernunnos symbolizes predators, this Aspect is not viewed as sinister. In the natural order, all living things must consume to survive, and this is simply regarded as an integral part of the enduring cycle of Nature.

The Mani of Beasts

The Mani, revered as the animal gods of the plains, mesas, and forests spanning the natural world, hold a distinct place in the Wild Faith. Within this sacred order, each species of beast is presided over by its own immortal Prince, serving as the ruler and guardian of its kind. The Mani were created with the purpose of maintaining harmony and balance among the diverse creatures of the land, while also acting as dutiful servants to the Aspects. Over time, the wood elven tribes adopted a deep reverence for the Mani, with some of these animal deities even receiving names from the elves themselves. These named Mani became the focus of widespread prayers and devotion, while others remained less known or unrecognized. The Mani play a vital role in the spiritual connection between forest dwellers and the natural world, embodying the diversity and vitality of the creatures that inhabit it.

Amaethon, the Prince of all Cervidae, stands as the silent guardian of the grassy plains and woodlands. His dominion is vast and abundant, and his subjects, the great horned beasts of the world, provide a bountiful source of sustenance for the descendant races. Yet, it is of paramount importance never to take his benevolence for granted, as the mighty stags and their kin can swiftly turn the tables on any descendant predator.

Amaethon embodies several aspects in the pantheon of gods. He represents Regality, symbolized by his role as the Stag, the ruler of the herd who exudes dignity within his realm. He personifies Compassion, as he must tend to the health and well-being of his herd to ensure their survival through the harsh winter months. Amaethon represents Justice, for those who wrong the herd must face their sovereign and make amends. Lastly, he embodies Fatherhood, serving as a guiding example for the young bucks within the herd, preparing them to lead their own in the future.

The Princess of Bears, Bolomormaa, possesses both formidable ferocity and genuine tenderness within her nature. Above all else, she is a spirit characterized by her profound value for protection and guardianship. Bolomormaa does not harbor a predisposition for warfare or aggression; rather, her fierceness is reserved for those who pose a threat to her cubs or tribe.

Unsurprisingly, she holds a revered status as the patron of mothers and motherhood, as few things are as inherently natural as the nurturing and safeguarding of one's offspring. Bolomormaa's blessings are fervently sought by expectant mothers and those already in the role of motherhood, invoking her gentleness and protective qualities. For mothers whose children have grown older or individuals who assume protective roles within their communities, they may pray to her for strength and fortitude.

Like a caring mother, the Sovereign of Bears is always attentive and receptive, even if her responses may not always be readily apparent. Her presence embodies the essence of motherhood and the deep, instinctual drive to nurture and safeguard the young and vulnerable.

To encounter the Princess of Owls is to experience tranquility, for her prey remains oblivious to her silent approach. Her swiftness, elegance, and mastery as the nocturnal hunter have given rise to stories that intermingle both death and solace. This Mani embodies not only the qualities of Knowledge, Wisdom, and Patience but also the essence of the night itself.

Many individuals seek out Ohowaki to glean from her a treasure trove of stories and tales. Legend says she assumes the guise of an ordinary messenger owl when visiting scholars or librarians. For those who display a genuine thirst for knowledge, who are dedicated teachers, or who keep vigil during the night hours, there exists the possibility of encountering an owl perched nearby, quietly observing their work. The Sovereign, with her association with wisdom and patience, serves as a silent guardian and a repository of knowledge hidden within the dark realm of the night.

The Savage Wolf, Morea, and the Stalwart Boar, Moccus, stand as distinct Mani, yet they are often spoken of together, regarded as dual patrons of war. Morea embodies wisdom and cunning, resembling the stalker in the night. He leads his extensive pack with ruthless calculation, discerning the vulnerabilities of his adversaries and striking with the swiftness of lightning. In contrast, Moccus exudes an indomitable and steadfast nature. His hordes charge directly at their foes, unyielding and relentless, trampling over all who dare to oppose them. Together, Morea and Moccus represent the two facets of warfare—strategic ferocity and unyielding strength. They are revered by those who prepare for battle, offering guidance and protection in times of conflict.

Beyond their roles in war, Morea and Moccus embody a deeper sense of loyalty-to the tribe and to the clan. The Aenguls of Nature and Cycles, serving as a triumvirate and a cycle themselves to maintain a balance between life and death, destruction and renewal, and other processes with the natural planes of the world. They are sometimes considered to be amoral or unconscious overseers of their domain, uncaring and occasionally spiteful toward the Descendent races who often rely on nature’s bounty to survive or herald forces unnatural to the Aspects’ creations.

The Three Aspects came into existence at the dawn of time and creation, born to turn what was a barren expanse into something beautiful and worthy of appreciation. Throughout the days, Cerridwen painted the lands with grass and trees, oceans and rivers, and fauna to graze upon it all. Cernunnos followed along behind her to provide the means for an everlasting cycle, predators to stalk that which grazes and deserts of sand and snow to challenge all in the race for survival. During the nights, when both Cernunnos and Cerridwen rested from their toils, Nemiisae crept up through the shadows to see the cycle finished. She laid the seeds of decay into that which the predators killed, breathed disease to keep the predators from devouring all, and planted mushrooms in the dark and damp places of the world to store what was leftover.

The colors of an open field, the warmth of sun upon bare skin, and even the taste of fresh fruit picked right from the tree. Mothers and caretakers of all paths often herald her as their patron.

The stoic and determined Cernunnos is survival and the challenge presented to life. He is often depicted as a faceless hunter garbed in pelts and mossy leaves, crowned by large horns or antlers with a bow and spear in hand. He stands at the side of Cerridwen as a guardian to her and her work while keeping watch upon his own array of duties. Life cannot exist everlasting and it is Cernunnos who recognizes this, ushering death forward so that renewal and rebirth may be done. It’s said that it was he who equipped the predators of the world with their teeth and claws, and that it is he who provides the sense of cunning and strength to those who seek survival.

Wrapped in shadows and left unseen to all, Nemiisae is the hidden third Aspect of the triumvirate. Her names are unnamed and unspoken, her visage is a black fog in a dark night. She is the antithesis of Cerridwen, an embodiment of death and decay and the natural cycle’s dark truths. For many, she is considered the final stop for the turning of the cycle before it begins anew. Cerridwen creates life and sends it into the world, Cernunnos challenges that life and makes sure the wheel continues to turn, and Nemiisae is the embrace of death that makes space for the next coming of Cerridwen’s harvest.

Cerridwen’s Hearth

A prayer spoken in reverence of the Aspects, Cerridwen, to show one’s devotion to her sphere of the natural realm with the loving care of a parent.

“O’ Green Lady, blessed Mother of the Hearth and Harvest,

Guide us toward the warmth of your sanctuary

Where worry and woe may be forgotten for the eve

And where love and joy flourishes in the heat of your wyldflame.

O’ Cerridwen, your cursed children seek your blessing.

Gift it unto us and we shall see the world bloom.”

Cernnunos’ Wrath

A prayer spoken in reverence of the Aspect, Cernunnos, to show one’s resolve in protecting nature with all the fury and strength of a predator.

“O’ Horned Lord, cunning Father of the Hunt and Wild,

Imbue our arms with your strength

And fill our hearts with courage

For that which corrupts seeks nature’s demise.  

O’ Cernunnos, your cursed hunters seek your blessing.

Grant us your wrath and we shall see the world cleaned.”

Hamatsa’s Blessing

A blessing often spoken over those with minor wounds and rudimentary ailments, sometimes shortened to wish better health to the sickly or feeble.

“Hail, Healer o’ Seas,

Grant us the hands to ease this pain,

And to sew close these wounds.

Be they of blood and flesh,

Or of sickness and decay.

Hail, o’ Healer.

Treat them as you would your calves,

Take them into your wake, see them made whole.”

The Mother’s Hymn

A deeper prayer spoken in the midst of intense medical emergencies and during healing rituals. It’s said to beseech Cerridwen herself for aid in saving those wounded from the grip of death.

“O’ Mother of Harvest, hear our pleas:

This one’s hunt has not yet ended, their duties unfulfilled.

Bless them with time and vitality,

And show them the path back to us.

O’ Mother of Harvest, aid us in this dire hour.

Guide us in growing back what is lost,

Sow the seeds of recovery.

O’ Mother of Harvest, we ask you this.”

New Beginning

Done during Spring, the season of rebirth. A prayer spoken after offering a braid of one’s hair to the Aspects, beseeching a new beginning.

“O’ compassionate mother,

I offer you a piece of my essence,

So that you may imbue me with your sacred breath,

And reform my soul anew,

Free of the burdens on my shoulders.”

The Essence of Healing

A prayer spoken by healers seeking the mother’s grace when treating a patient. They are to drink Cerridwen’s essence, sacred Attunement springwater, before speaking these words.

“O’ earth Mother, benevolent to the weak and weary,

Who spreads the gifts of life and good health over the emerald wilds.

You who gifted me my own life, and their life,

Pray for my soul and bless my hands with your healing light.

O' compassionate Mother, look down upon me,

I ask that you help your dutiful servant,

so they may continue to serve you and spread your goodness across the land."

Prayer of Fortitude

A prayer spoken when seeking strength of soul and mind. Spoken after providing part of yourself as an offering, a braid of hair, or a drop of blood.

“Let nothing shake my soul,

Let nothing strike fear in my heart,

For when the world falls apart, I remember this:

The Aspects never fade.

Your faith in them gives you the world

Whoever has the light of the lord and lady lacks nothing;

The Mother and Father alone bring great treasures”

A Mother’s Gift

A prayer to beseech good health for a newborn child. Words spoken after the child’s umbilical cord, or baby teeth, have been offered.

And benevolent lady of life,

Grant this my joyous bequest;

Send out your grace on (he/she)

Fill them with life unending,

And start them on the path of goodness

That they may spread life and happiness”

Last Rites

Spoken over a dying Elf, or shortly after their passing, to bring peace to the departing Spirit and guide them on.

“O' Mother, look upon me now.

See here that your gift of life has ended,

That his/her heart is still and his/her Spirit weary.

May you bring him/her to peace and slumber eternal.

O' Father, look upon me now.

See here that your gift of the hunt has ended,

That his/her voice is silent and his/her blood grows cold.

Nevaehli War-Prayer

Often spoken just before war-parties depart to skirmish and hold the enemies of Nevaehlen at bay, the prayer is meant to call upon the Mani brothers of warriors, Moccus and Morea, for strength in the heat of battle and sight in the fog of war.

“By the will of Moccus and Morea, o’ Brothers of Battle:

Let our weapons strike with the strength of a Boar,

And our voices howl with the intent of a Wolf,

We devote ourselves to the dance of war in your name.

May our foes fear the Nevaehli call.”

Heart of the Hunt

To thank the Aspects for a successful hunt. Spoken after an offering from the hunt has been prepared and gifted.

“O’ father of the hunt,

Blessed be to this bounty, whose hide will clothe our young,

Whose flesh will fill our stomachs.

As we take from your realm, we give back

So our souls may be one with the great balance”

Wild Wrath

A ritualistic march spoken upon the eve of decisive points in war. It is accompanied with its participants donning traditional Mali’ame warpaint and weaponry before chanting the prayer, calling for all of nature to use them as its instrument of wrath.

“Hmm.. hmm.. hmm..

Woe upon those who scorned the Wild,

Those that spat upon the Mother’s harvest,

And those that waste the Father’s hunt.

Hmm.. hmm.. hmm..

Watch for the march of the Wild,

Listen for the piercing howls,

The stomping hooves and the flap of wings.

Hmm.. hmm.. hmm..

We march with the will of the Gods.

We march with teeth and claws.

We march toward you.”

Essence of War

Spoken by Mali’ame warriors before going into battle. They are to drink the essence of Cernunnos, a vial of boar’s blood, before speaking these words.

“O’ Lord of Death, strengthen my arm:

In our time of need, I beg you to come to your people’s aid.

Fill my heart with the honor of those past as I face this newest trial

As we remember you in all our earthly troubles.

Benevolent mother, wipe fear from my heart:

Never abandoning your children, always tender,

Preserve me that I may see my children and yours live,

I place my trust in you to hold my life from the end.”

To Amaethon, Prince of Cervidae

Prayers to Amaethon should be spoken when elk, deer or caribou have been hunted. Amaethon embodies gentleness and compassion, and can be prayed to for those desiring these traits.

“Great Prince of Mighty Elk,

Whose flock run abound the deep woods and great plains,

We give to you our devotion.

We show to you our respect for your kind.

Oh wise and gentle Amaethon, show us your blessing.”

Prayers to Nemglan should be spoken by those interacting with Hawks, Eagles, Falcons and other birds of prey, and those seeking the traits of freedom and independence.

We give to you our devotion.

We show to you our respect for your kind.

Oh Nemglan, free and proud, show us your blessing.”

Moccus embodies stalwartness and conviction. Prayers are spoken to him by those seeking those traits, and those who have hunted the wild boars of the realm.

We show to you our respect for your kind.

Oh Moccus, the indomitable, show us your blessing.”

Those seeking good relationship with wolves and hounds pray to Morea, as well as those who seek ferocity and bravery.

A strong rider will always offer prayer to Machana, as well as wayward souls seeking swiftness and loyalty.

Bolomormaa embodies the spirit of the Mother Bear, a patron for mothers and women.

Mahae symbolizes Courage and Pride, a blessing of moral and strength gifted to warriors about to charge into the heat of battle.

Kwakwani - The Trickster Raven

The Raven is a mischievous but kind-hearted trickster, and represents a quiet cunning and forward creativity that makes it attractive to artists, singers and poets.

Felixii - The Silent Watcher

The Wildcat makes not a peep as it stalks the deep woods. Her presence is unknown to many, and has become a patron for practitioners of stealth, and keepers of secrets.

Ohowaki - Keeper of Knowledge 

Like many other cultures, Wood Elves consider the Owl a symbol of wisdom. Ohowaki has long been a sharer of knowledge to the forgotten-folk, and has become a patron of scholars.

“Knowledgable Ohowaki , Princess of Owls.

Whose hunts are silent,

We give you our devotion.

And honour for your people.

Oh Ohowaki wise, but graceful, give us your blessing.”

“Ohowaki maehran, Ellaurir ay’Ibaran.

Two Elves who wish to come together and join as one, undergo the ceremonial Rite of Marriage. 

This event is hosted by either a Green Priest, Marked Priest, or High Priest of the Wild Faith. For those coming together who are in respective Seeds, the Seed Chieftain or elder of that tribe plays a role in this binding ritual. Should the Chieftain or an elder be absent during the time of the ritual, another can come and represent those individuals for the ceremony to continue. 

Pre-Rite

The rite begins weeks prior to the actual ceremony, where the pair wishing to marry approach a Priest with the wish to be bound. From there, the Priest brings the partners toward a sacred part of the village, either an altar, totem, or grounds of praying. It is the role of the Priest to instruct the pair to braid two pieces of cord, rope, or whatever significant piece of material with beads and/or charms. 

The Priest must also task the couple to find an egg amongst the wilds that they would use during the ritual. The description and explanation for the purpose of this egg is left largely unknown until the rite actually occurs.

Lastly, the pair are taught about Life Gifts. Each individual is to present their other, during the time of the actual ritual, with a gift they either crafted, possessed, or found, resembling their promises toward their partner. 

Ritual

On the day of the ceremony, an Omentahu is called where Seed members and friends are called to gather and support the pair who are to be spiritually bound. Traditionally, this rite occurs in a culturally significant location, either by an Elder tree, or totem. Each partner typically dawns garbs of various colors, yet their features are unmarked without any adorning paints or inks. 

The ritual starts with the Priest present, as well as those Chieftains or elders of the respective Seeds. These individuals are to give their verbal blessing of the union between both Seeds and peoples. Following this, the Priest will guide the entirety of the gathering and the pair to be married, into a prayer to both the Mother and Father. The Priest explains that this is an act to summon their gaze, and so that they can judge and bless the ritual during the proceedings. 

From here, the Priest will ask each individual to make their verbal vow, and present their Life Gift to their other. The partner will explain the significance behind the gift, and what their other means to them. Once both of the Elves have made their exchange before the Priest, and their kin, the ritual continues with the drinking from a ceremonial bowl. This bowl contains the water from an attunement pool, as well as the egg the  couple had found together. Here, the egg represents fertility, and growth - either symbolizing new amongst the pair, or the growth of their relationship.

After the pair drink from the waters, their right hands are presented to the Priest, where a ceremonial blade is used to cut and cause blood to pool within their palms. Each individual, then, with the blood from their hand, must paint a marking important to them amongst the others forehead. Their bleeding hands are instructed to come together afterward, clasped and wrapped with the braided rope. The blood symbolizes longevity and life, where dirt is spread over the rope to represent humbleness and honesty. 

The ritual comes to an end as the Priest chants up toward the skies,

“O’ Mother, O’ Father, feel the bond of two beating hearts before your creation. Bless these with the warmth of your embrace, and ferocity of your boons.”

It is then that the ritual comes to an end, where the pair are officially unionized, and bound under the gaze of the Aspects, and their loved ones.

Those Elves who have lived a life of servitude and devotion to the Aspects, and passed on to the peaceful creations beyond, are granted a rite of passing. A Green Priest, Marked Priest, or High Priest may proctor and guide those to send off their loved ones in a ritual. There are three traditions, and separate ways of helping a loved one pass on. 

Followers of the Wild Faith understand that with life, comes inevitable death. Preparations are made to the body, in one of the three following ways. 

Land

Wood Elves have a strong, natural connection to the land and nature around them. It is a core belief amongst the Green Priesthood and Drui, that the body is to return to nature through natural means. That is, for this preparation and ritual, the Priest will guide the body, wrapped in the person's pelts and garbs, either against the trunk of a tree, or in the ground. 

As the body is positioned or lowered, the Priest will welcome those to share memories of their loved one, as well as present a Gift of Passing - something for the individual to take on with them and their spirit. 

The Priest proceeds with a prayer, 'Last Rites', where all are welcomed to join in and chant it together. The ritual comes to an end, and with time,  animals and flora will feed and decompose the body, allowing for the natural cycle to continue.

River & Sea

While Wood Elves notoriously bond with the trees and fauna on land, many spend their days on the sea worshiping Cerridwen’s aquatic life and creatures. Be it a death out at sea, or an individual with this bond to the waters, some may choose to send their loved ones off with a ritual of the river & sea. 

The body is prepared and settled upon a raft that Seed members and friends craft. Atop this raft and the body lay various Gifts of Passing, items that the individual takes on with them and their spirit. 

A Priest may then proceed with the prayer, 'Last Rites', where all are welcomed to chant whilst pushing the raft off into sea, or down a river. The ritual comes to an end, and with time, avian creatures or the waves of the ocean take to the body and allow for it to slowly return to nature.

Hearth

Some Elves are more in tune with the elemental side of nature, and that of the hearth. Fire, being an equally symbolic representation of life and death, is one means of allowing those who passed on to return to the lands around them. For this ritual, Seed members and friends may create a bed of twigs, logs, and sticks of which the body is rested upon. 

As the Priest guides those into prayer, 'Last Rites', a torch bearer, usually one of the Seed from the Wood Elf who has passed, will set the bed aflame, allowing for the fires to blanket over the deceased individual. It is then believed that these ashes will provide nutrients for new life to grow, and thus aiding in the natural cycle.

Last Rites

Spoken over a dying Elf, or shortly after their passing, to bring peace to the departing Spirit and guide them on.

“O' Mother, look upon me now.

See here that your gift of life has ended,

That his/her heart is still and his/her Spirit weary.

May you bring him/her to peace and slumber eternal.

O' Father, look upon me now.

Origins 

Traditionally, Wood Elves mature physically and mentally at the age of eighteen, much like human descendants do. However, culturally, Wood Elves are acknowledged as growing adults within society at the age of fifty. 

Such a monumental time is celebrated amongst the Wood Elves in their glade. The sapling turning fifty picks an elder within the community to host the coming of age ritual. An Omentahu is called, where many kinsmen gather with gifts and festive, colorful garbs. 

Awaiti of the Sirame spent most of her days in the village of Siramenor guiding the youth and inspiring many to live and walk paths amongst the Aspects creations, as well as Malin's teachings. Upon a spring morning of one saplings' fifth birthday, the Sirame spent time with her kinsmen preparing a celebration. The Omentahu was decorated with spiraling flora, hanging, weaved tapestries and tiva, as well as accustomed foods atop wooden platters. However, at the center sat an ornate basin, one filled with viscous, dark emerald green ink. As village folk gathered in circle for the ritual, each was met with ink painting their skin. Awaiti told a story of Taynei'hiylun, the Green Dragur, and marked each of their skin with pieces of the story while the sapling sat at the center with the wooden basin. Once the tale came to an end, the moral of the story was spoken for all to hear, 

"Despite the milestone achieved, much more growth is blessed beyond your years. Taynei's lessons are only a seedling of what tribulations you have left to face."

Coming of Age Rite

The rite begins with a story and the individual seated before a basin of rich, green ink. It is up to the elder to share a tale of the sapling during their first fifty springs of life, be it something wholesome, a trial or tribulation, or perhaps a lesson learnt. This ceremonial basin of ink is used throughout the story,  marking on each forehead or arms of individuals present, symbols from the tale being told.

By the end of the storytelling, the sapling is deeply bound to their  kinsmen, as all those present now wear a piece of their story. The rite ends with a lesson taught, be it a moral of the story, or something to leave all those to ponder. Gifts may be given, and personalized festivities may proceed.
