The Imperial Order of the Red Dragon acts as the main knight-order of the Holy Imperium, acting directly under the Crownlands and for the Emperor himself. Although acquiescence of other knightly orders exist out of the imperial purview, the Imperial Order of the Red Dragon, a namesake after Godfrey the Great, the Red Dragon of Horen, acts as the supreme knightly order, as they act on behalf of His Imperial Majesty. 

At the apex of Imperial Knighthood stands the Grand Knight of the Imperium. They are the highest figure of authority in Knighthood, second only to the Emperor. They are to ensure both the Knights of Burgundy and the Knights of Gudour are operational and fulfilling their duties to the expected degree.

For nearly a century, the Dragon Knights have served as the Emperor’s iron fist, the finest instruments of war dedicated to subjugating all who oppose the Imperial destiny. The conquered world heralds a new age that demands new men, not for subjugation but to shepherd. The Knights of Burgundy are born again of this mandate, serving as a shield for the denizens of the Imperium.

The Knights of Burgundy have served at every stage of the Empire’s ascension, from Duke to King to Emperor of Man to, at last, Imperator Mundi. Their purpose is to preserve His Imperial Majesty’s peace by protecting the common man, upholding chivalric tradition, and cleansing the realm of blight and beast. Burgundian Knights uphold the sanctity of the realm, whether defending towns assailed by brigands or the vile Maleficar who seek to sow corruption. 

Knights of Burgundy are expected to endeavour to undertake both quests of their own, and quests for the order at large, seeking to uproot and displace any blight or beast that seeks to encroach on the continent. To pursue the greater threats that seek to unsettle the peace of the realm.

The Knightly Order and the Military are two distinct institutions, though they cooperate in many operations. A Burgundian Knight holds no inherent officer rank within the Imperial military by virtue of title alone. Instead, they are equivalent to the highest enlisted rank and no higher, unless they choose to progress through the military’s ranks of their own accord.

✠ THE PATH ✠

From the lowly page to the questing Errant, the path of Burgundy tests the limits of one’s spirit. The journey is a slow ascent, weeding those of weak will and refining those worthy few to the Knights they shall become.

THE SQUIRE

Between the ages of eight and twelve, youths may be taken on as pages. During this time, one can expect to learn the virtues of knighthood and the manner in which they must hold themselves. Pages attend to menial tasks, such as the maintenance of their knight’s armour, weaponry and the grooming of their steed. Towards the end of their pagehood, the knight shall assess if the page can receive an education in arms, and thus determine their readiness for squirehood. 

Pagehood is not a required prerequisite for squirehood, as squires are any prospective youths who catch the attention of a serving knight. Squires are taken on in the early teenage years; their service as a squire is often expected to last until the man's early adulthood. 

The duties of the page continue into squirehood, though are now adjoined by a true martial education and greater responsibility to bear. Squires shall be tested on their virtues to prove their worth, as both man and knight. Should their knight deem the squire worthy, they shall thus be elevated to Errant. 

Though trials remain at the Knights discretion, certain themes must be met along a squire's journey. A squire must prove themself to embody each of the key knightly virtues, be this through a trial set for the clear purpose of proving that, or proving it through a feat achieved as a squire.

Whilst Knights are a primarily martial force, it remains important for a Knight to have quick wit, an intelligent mind. They must separate themself from the common barbarian, therefore it is imperative that the Knight ensures the squire receives a true, varied education, for not all squires are expected to be from a noble background, and therefore not receive it within their own home.

Squires are encouraged to record and detail their accomplishments in a journal, such that it could be presented to other Knights to take note of their feats, and eventually the Chronicler, should they receive their Knighthood.

THE ERRANT

An errant stands at the precipice of true knighthood, a seasoned older man or squire who has mastered the foundational duties and is now being made for heavier burdens. Serving directly underneath the guiding hand of a sworn knight of the order, they are in a period of preparation, training to master the martial arts and the strict intricacies of chivalrous behavior.

It is under their mentor's watchful eye that the errant prepares to embark upon their defining quest, a profound trial of character where they must prove their unwavering honor, courage, and loyalty before their place within the ranks of the knights. 

No single errant quest is alike. A mentor knows their squires and chooses a trial crafted uniquely for both character and spirit. It is a personal journey to overcome their own individual weaknesses, proving they are ready in their own way.

IV

✠ THE CEREMONY ✠

After an Errant completes his quest, a ceremony must be thrown to celebrate the dubbing of a new Burgundian Knight. This ceremony must be attended by three knights, one of which must be the grand knight. Additionally, the Emperor may independently knight someone, or attend the meeting in place of the Grand Knight.

The Knight, whom the Errant once squired beneath, leads the oath, whilst the Grand Knight or the Emperor places a blade against the Errant's shoulder. As the oath is read, the blade passes over the Errant's head onto the other shoulder, dubbing him a knight of the order.

Upon conclusion of the oath, the Errant is deemed a Knight of the Order and may be afforded a moniker should they prove deserving of one, often earned by great feats.

THE OATH

“How must you live?”

“I shall live by my honour, for the glory of the Empire. I shall honour Our Lord and His Church.”

“How must you act?”

“I shall safeguard the helpless and uphold the weak. I shall keep faith and act righteously, even if none bear witness.”  

“How must you serve?” 

“I shall serve my Emperor with valour and conviction. No quest shall be left without end, no foe cowered from.”

“Who must you serve?”

“The Emperor, and his Empire.”

“Rise, Sir/Dame, Knight of Burgundy.”

At the oath’s conclusion, the knight is presented with their golden spurs, as well as an aurum dagger and cloth of burgundy. They must draw blood from their palm and dress the wound in the cloth, heralding their induction.

To become a Dragon Knight is to sacrifice.

✠ DUTY AND TENURE ✠

Admission to the ranks of Gudour is the highest honor a knight can achieve. As such, there are only ever at most seven Dragon Knights serving at any one time, excluding the Grand Knight. The duty of the Dragon Knight is to enact the Emperor’s Will and to safeguard him and the Imperial Family from all who seek to harm them. They are expected to wear the black Lodenland plate at all times and to keep their faces concealed by their helms. Unlike the Knights of Burgundy, no modifications may be made to the armor.

A Dragon Knight serves their term for seven summers, lest they dishonor their station. At the end of this period, their positions are open to challenge by the Knights of Burgundy, and a trial shall ensue. This entails a test of might and honor to determine who is most worthy of their position. If a Dragon Knight remains unchallenged, he may serve another term unless dismissed by the Grand Knight or the Emperor, in which case he shall be returned to his former chapter.

✠ THE CRUCIBLE✠

Every two terms, positions for the ranks of Gudour, at most two spots, may be challenged for by the knightly orders of the realm. Each vassal may put forward a champion to undergo the Crucible. In tandem, the Dragon Knights shall trial amongst themselves to determine the two least fit for their station - these two shall also undergo the Crucible.

The Crucible is a trial of the utmost rigor, intending to unearth the finest of warriors amidst the Imperium. The proceedings shall be held by the Grand Knight, who shall assess carefully the worthiness of each candidate to be elevated to Dragon Knight and present their findings to the Emperor. Each iteration holds different trials, but never diverge in the way of adversity.

✠ THE RITE OF PASSAGE ✠

The ritual to induct a Dragon Knight descends from their patron, Gudour, though its details are guarded. These few are knighted by the Emperor himself. Upon its conclusion, they are granted their armor and cloak, and their names are inscribed in the Tome of Gudour.

I implore you to turn yourself into the nearest guardsman or ordermen. You will answer before the privy for your actions. Judgment will be granted promptly after testimony is heard. If you refuse to turn yourself in, you will suffer the branding of brigand and be afforded no mercy. To be hunted down like a vagrant mutt, and to be put to the sword or burned as a wytch per the Lex Tiberi handling of a rogue magi. Until then I charge all levies, legionnaires, and knightly orders to apprehend Ark.

In recent years, it has come to my attention that there is a growing confusion and assumed segregation between the two chapters of the Imperial Order of the Red Dragon. I hereby abolish the archaic and redundant orders previously established under the 'chapter system' within the Imperial Order. There is only one Dragon Knight, one knighthood, that will serve as retainers to the Dragonsblood. One Order to lead and inspire the common man to do great things.

Let it be known that this vision has always been something that has brewed in the back of my mind, when, for a time, I was the only Dragon Knight still remaining after the tragedies that befell my forebears. The silent poison of hubris, the notion that one chapter might rise above another, has long unsettled me. We are the blades at the side of the Imperial Throne, forged equal in purpose and resolve. I have chosen and elevated those whom I have deemed useful and shown their loyalty. Each has demonstrated their aptitude through their trials, and each has shown they will fight side by side against darkspawn, brigand, and traitor. No longer will we fly dual banners of Sordryn and Gudour. 

We shall only fly the symbol of the Pertinax line: the Red Dragon on a black field.

Furthermore, it is declared that all lower knight orders, local troops, and faith-based militants must follow the commands of a Dragon Knight, who serves as the extension of my will and that of his Imperial Majesty. These warriors are expected to adhere to a code of honor and integrity above all else; thus, they are entrusted with their noble duties and expected to serve. That is to say, too, that a Dragon Knight found abusing their station will be drawn and quartered for tarnishing the name of his Order, his Emperor, and the Almighty. All lords and their forces are expected to do everything possible to support the retainers of the House of Dragonsblood. Any hesitation or outright resistance to their efforts will be considered treason.

Let it be so decreed, and the Light of the Almighty’s flame never dim.

The Imperial Order of the Red Dragon is the foremost knightly order of the Holy Imperium, serving directly under the Emperor. Founded in honor of Godfrey the Great, it upholds imperial martial authority, sets the code for all knightly orders, and answers only to the Emperor’s command.

The Imperial Grand Knight is the highest authority within the Imperial Knighthood and serves as the Emperor’s chief representative in all martial and chivalric matters. As head of the Order of the Red Dragon, the Grand Knight oversees the operations of all knightly chapters, ensuring they fulfill their duties to the Empire with honor and efficiency. The Grand Knight holds command over all knightly orders and possesses the authority to appoint Chapter Masters (with the Emperor’s consent) and recommend Dragon Knights for imperial recognition. The position is privy and advisory in nature, focusing on the defense and security of the realm.

When attending or leading chapter activities, the Grand Knight defers to Chapter Masters unless the situation demands direct intervention. In matters of chivalric governance and imperial defense, however, his word carries absolute authority beneath the Emperor himself.

CHAPTERS
The Chapter of Heroism, or Knights of the Golden Dragon
 

A prestigious branch of the Imperial Order devoted to heroic deeds and perilous quests. Serving the Emperor directly, its knights combat great evils, both worldly and supernatural in order to protect the realm and elevate imperial glory. Founded in honor of Sordran, the Blinding Flame, the chapter’s goal is to address matters of a spiritual and worldly nature beyond humankind whether involving descendants or creatures while upholding the Empire’s safety and inspiring morale through heroism. Dragon Knights are chosen from proven imperial soldiers who complete squirehood under its members. Each year, Gudour’s Tournament crowns a Hero of the Empire, granting them the honor of wielding the sacred Mortal Blade of Jophiael for three years.

Representing the Emperor’s most trusted and elite champions. Named for Gudour, the greatest dragon-knight of Man, these knights serve as the Emperor’s personal guard and execute his will without hesitation. Bound by unwavering loyalty, they protect the Imperial Family and act with the full authority of His Imperial Majesty himself. Admission requires the Emperor’s personal approval, and knighthood is granted only in his presence. The Dragon Knights embody the Emperor’s honor, discipline, and virtue, standing as living symbols of imperial strength and devotion.

The great vassals of the Empire possess the right to raise their own knightly orders, sworn to their banners and causes. Though these orders serve with valor and must uphold the chivalric code, they stand beneath the Imperial Orders in rank and privilege. Their fealty lies first with their liege lord, yet in times of war they remain bound to answer the Empire’s call. Any honors or privileges they hold are granted by their lord’s decree, not by imperial right

Founded by Graf Leon I Barclay von Minitz as the spiritual successor to the Sons of Saint Tylos, the order protects those of Reinmaren and Waldenian heritage across the realms. Reformed to unite with the Host of Saint Johann, it stands as a unified military force dedicated to defending Reinmar’s honor and peace. The Order of the Phoenix, formerly known as the Knights of Ravenmire, is a chivalric order born from the war-torn lands of Middenland, first organized by Sir Gaspard Winburgh following the legacy of his predecessors, heroes of the Veletzer War. Bearing the symbol of a purple phoenix wreathed in red flame upon a sable field, the order embodies rebirth through struggle and fire. Rooted in the harsh martial traditions of the northern Ravenstates, its knights are renowned for their fierce discipline, brutal customs, and ritual scarring to mark resilience and loyalty. Serving under the Patriarch of House Rostova, the Order upholds his will and preserves the proud, unyielding spirit of Ravenmire’s warrior heritage.

IMPERIAL MISSION

The Imperial Order of the Red Dragon acts as the main knight-order of the Holy Imperium, acting directly under the Crownlands and for the Emperor himself. Although acquiescence of other knightly orders exist out of the imperial purview, the Imperial Order of the Red Dragon, a namesake after Godfrey the Great, the Red Dragon of Horen, acts as the strongest branch with martial authority within the realm as they act on behalf of His Imperial Majesty. There are numerous chapters within the Knight Order that each serve their own purpose. 

Unlike most knightly orders, they do not act as a levy force and only answer to the call of the Emperor as and when appropriate. On top of this, the Imperial Order of the Red Dragon sets out the standards and codes that should be followed by all knight orders in the realm, as they are bequeathed to the temporal authority of the Emperor himself. 

ENLISTMENT

In order to join the Imperial Order of the Red Dragons, one must first be enlisted into the Emperor’s Legion for a minimum and mandatory service of two years. Upon completion of all mandatory services, a person may attempt to squire directly under one of the knights of any chapter unless specified.

THE PRIVILEGES OF KNIGHTHOOD

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege to don the title of Sir.

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege to display one’s own sigil.

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege to be armed amongst the Emperor’s Court.

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege to govern lands in the name of the Emperor if they are bestowed it, and to tax their fiefdom as necessary. 

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege to bear the coat of arms for the imperial order in their own personal crest, so long as they follow the imperial tincture list. 

☩ A Knight of the Empire shall receive the privilege of the right to trial by combat in the Imperial courts.

KNIGHTLY CHAPTERS OF THE IMPERIAL ORDER OF THE RED DRAGON

The Chapters of the Order of the Red Dragon are the organizational bodies within which tasks are undertaken. Contrary to a typical knight-order, the Imperial Order serves the role of a hand of the Imperial Crown much more often, hence each Chapter is centered around serving a particular purpose within the Empire of Man.

The Chapters of the Order take on the patronage of greater dragonkin to demonstrate the qualities they are meant to uphold. Rather than implying direct affiliation with the dragonkin themselves, instead such patronage reflects the mannerisms with which delegated tasks are undertaken, and affecting iconography and the imagery of each Chapter.

♞ Chapter of Heroism | Knights of the Golden Dragon

Dragon Patron: Sordran.

Namesake Patronage: Named after the Blinding Flame after he approached the Emperor to reignite the Pact of Horen.

Knights of this chapter are known for their heroism – their entire existence and goal is to partake in heroic quests outside the norm of levies. Usually, this consists of fighting dangerous and fabled beasts, or dealing with matters unable to be resolved by adventurers. The Emperor employs the knightly chapter of heroes in order to deal with threats of both a spiritual and temporal matter, and they will normally act on behalf of the Emperor when he is unable to partake himself. For example, thwarting antagonistic evil forces such as great undead legions or infernal ones. 

In order to become a knight of the Chapters of Heroism, you must first squire under somebody directly from this Chapter after completing mandatory service to the Emperor’s Legion. After finishing squirehood, the Chapter Master may allow them to enter after swearing an oath to the Emperor even if he is not present himself to do so. 

Knights of this chapter will partake in a yearly festival known as Gudour’s Tournament. At the conclusion of this festival, the winner is dubbed as a Hero of the Empire and is allowed to carry the imperial artefact: the Mortal Blade of Jophiael for three years before the tournament takes place again.

Chapter Master: Sir Ghetsis Mareno (xMuted)

Goals: To deal with matters of a spiritual and worldly nature unrelated to humans, be it descendants, or creatures. Their goal is to make the Empire look safe and to raise heroes to increase morale.

♞ Chapter of Secrecy | Knights of the Gray Dragon

Dragon Patron: Aruzond.

Namesake Patronage: Named after the Gray Wizard spoken previously by Sordran, for his apparent elusive nature. 

Knights of this chapter are sworn to secrecy, and not much is known about its existence or the purpose it serves. Usually, these knights adorn gray armour that is similar if not matching the imperial dragon knights chapter. It is believed they act on behalf of the Emperor directly, though their existence may simply be a fallacious ploy to instill fear. There is no known method to join this chapter, if it does truly exist. 

Goals: Unknown.

Chapter Master:  Vacant.

♞ Chapter of Loyalty | Knights of the Black Dragon

Dragon Patron: Gudour. 

Namesake Patronage: Named after the strongest champion of Man, a dragon-and-knight of great renown.

The Knights of the Black Dragon, or informally imperial dragon knights are considered to hold the most prestige and trust from the Emperor directly, and it is their sincere job to do his bidding on a personal level. They will guard him, they will fight for him, and if asked to do so, they will die for him without complaint. The dragon knights are usually seen to guard the Imperial Family directly when asked to do so, and are considered to be the strongest knights of the realm. To lose as a dragon knight is to dishonour the Emperor directly.

Squires of this chapter are only accepted on the basis that the Emperor himself personally approves them, and they are knighted personally by His Imperial Majesty during the Emperor’s Court. 

The Chaptermaster acts directly under the Emperor himself and aids in the organisation, summoning, and general commanding of the imperial dragon knights. Nevertheless, the Chaptermaster simply acts on behalf of His Imperial Majesty, and so any orders or directives from them come under the purview and narrative of the Emperor. 

All dragon knights are considered at the same rank as officers in the Emperor’s Legion, and they may take command of the levies if asked to do so by the Emperor himself. All dragon knights act as if they are consistently pursuing the will of His Imperial Majesty, and so they must be tactful and apprehensive of their own behaviour, as it pertinently displays the same moral and ethics of the Emperor himself. Any action undertaken by a dragon knight is generally considered to carry the authority of the Emperor.

Due to how strict the dragon knights are, there are not many, and most seek to become one. 

Chapter Master: Sir Carolus van Aert (pkdon)

Goals: Act on behalf of the Emperor, to guard him personally and at court, to guard his imperial family.

PATH TO IMPERIAL KNIGHTHOOD

♞ Pagehood

The path to Imperial Knighthood begins as the lowly page. Children between the ages of seven and fourteen are inspected and chosen by Knights seeking squires. Pages attend to menial tasks, such as cleaning, messaging and otherwise serving their knight. In return, they receive an education from their knight in the form of basic combat training and courtly manners. Pages should enlist as soldiers of the Emperor’s Legions to commit to the mandatory two years service before being raised as squires.

♞ Squirehood

After the mandatory two years service in the Emperor’s Legion, and if not already, once reaching the age of fourteen years, a page is then elevated as a squire under their knight. Squires retain the important tasks of their past and adopt new, combat related ones, such as maintaining arms and armour, protecting the knight, and even fighting in formation. Older squires are given important duties to be carried out, and will eventually embark on their Errant quest, as prescribed by the knight or the Chapter Master, to showcase their knowledge of Knightly Custom and Virtue with the goal of eventually becoming an imperial knight of any given chapter. 

♞ Knight Errant

A knight errant must complete a knightly quest and this quest must be enough to consider themselves as an imperial knight of the realm upon completion. Regardless of their Knightly Chapter, a knight errant’s quest should be something that the Emperor himself would look at proudly. This quest usually lasts for at least two to three years, either by undertaking numerous quests or doing one daring quest. At the conclusion of this quest, a knight is raised. 

ON THE CONDUCT OF A KNIGHT

Any knight of the realm, be it an imperial knight or a knight of a vassal lord should act in collaboration with the Empire’s moral and ethical code, and make sure to uphold the Emperor’s Peace.

All knights across the realm are expected to know how to address their peers, clergymen and local liege lords. Additionally, all knights are expected to act with honour, in tandem with the Chivalric Code, in any and all given circumstances.

Due to the role they undertake, all knights should be fit and healthy, both physically and mentally, so that they can conduct their role to the fullest. 

On the matter of imperial knights under any Chapter within the Imperial Order, mental impairment may lead to being removed from their office as a knight until rehabilitated. Furthermore, an imperial knight should not be intoxicated in their armour on any public premises. By donning the armour, an imperial knight speaks that they are undertaking the virtuous role in upholding the Emperor’s Peace.

ON THE DRESS OF IMPERIAL KNIGHTS

Imperial knights are particularly required to adorn the required armour of their chapter, but they are granted the privilege to raise or carry a banner with the coat of arms of their family as needed. On top of this, an imperial knight may wear a helm that is a variant to the usual adorned of their Chapter as long as it is approved by the Chapter Master. Unfortunately, imperial dragon knights hold a strict adherence to their uniform and must raise the banner of the Emperor solely.

Whilst in the realms of the Empire or outside of it, an imperial knight should always have their armour and weapon with them, armed to respond whenever action may call for it. They should never wander disarmed, both for their personal safety and because if challenges arise, they must face it.

THE IMPERIAL GRAND KNIGHT OF THE ORDER OF THE RED DRAGON

At the head of the Order of the Red Dragon is the Grand Knight, tasked with ensuring the working operations of the Order. Typically a Dragon Knight but Chapter Master of no order, the Grand Knight sits upon the privy and ensures the safety of the realm is well-represented, while appointing with the Emperor’s consent Chapter Masters of either order, and holding the special ability of recommendation of Dragon Knights to the Emperor himself. 

Though second to the authority of the Emperor, the Grand Knight is considered the highest authoritative force within the Knighthood itself, and their orders are to be considered as imperative to the safety of the realm or His Imperial Majesty. Should the Grand Knight attend activities of either the Chapter of Heroism or the Chapter of Loyalty, organizational and leadership tasks should generally be left to the Chapter Master, while especially critical orders can be made to supersede such only if absolutely necessary. However, the Grand Knight can lead initiatives himself, in which case he is considered the sole authoritative force.

It is the duty of the Grand Knight to ensure that all Chapters are operational and fulfilling their respective duties properly and at a high level.
