AS THE RIGHT HAND to the Zelador, the Secretary handles the more trivial tasks presented for the head of the Servantry Division, from scheduling meetings with individuals interested in joining the division's ranks, coordinating their training, and ensuring that they maintain a basic understanding of courtly etiquette. As this is a role that does demand an active presence in La Cort de La Taronja, applicants must be citizens of The Kingdom of Balian.

AS AN IMPORTANT FIGUREHEAD of medical knowledge, the court physician is also expected to post missives regarding any medical advisories, or substantial endeavors in their studies that would serve of use to the Curador. They may, in addition, work in collaboration with any alchemists of the court who use their abilities to provide the clinic with medicinal herbs and alchemical substances.

THE JOB OF A governor or governess is an important one, for they are tasked with assisting in raising the next generation of Balian through managing the children’s educations. Hosting lessons on etiquette, Balianese culture and history, and other necessary pillars of knowledge.

FOR CHILDREN WHO HOPE to specialize their education, they may decide to ward or page beneath a mentor; who is most often a government, court official, knight, or high-ranking member of the Regiment of Saint Lothar. Governors may help guide these budding passions, and can assist in the coordination of finding suitable mentors for children searching to further their knowledge in a specific field.

WHILE THE DUTIES OF HOUSEHOLD staff to most people seem tedious or humbling, they are in fact incredibly important. Butlers and maids handle a variety of inside operations, such as assisting courtiers and the peerage in day to day affairs, assisting in the setting up and hosting of events, and serving any diplomatic envoys or foreign guests hosted by the Court or Royal family. Chefs similarly assist in the daily functions of preparing the meals of the royal family and the courtiers, and ensuring that events are hosted with proper food and drink. They may choose to work in tandem with local taverns or other businesses if they so wish.

In her boundless patronage of the arts, HER MAJESTY, KATHRYN OF RHEN, has  decreed the raising of a grand theater, a house of entertainment and learning, where people may gather to witness the finest performances of drama, music, and literature. This hall shall stand as a testament to the glory of Balianese artistry, fostering the skill of players, poets, and musicians who shall stir the hearts of all who attend. It has been named the “MARIANO THEATRON” or ‘MARIANO STAGE’ in common, after MARIANO SATURNINO FERRAZ, founder of the Balianese Academy and primary linguist in codifying the Balianese language.

THIS NOBLE ENDEAVOR has been brought to life through the cherished aid of the CHILDREN’S KINGDOM OF BEELAIN, whose bright hearts and steadfast spirit have lent their support to this most joyous cause. In their wisdom and kindness, the CHILDREN  FROM THE KINGDOM OF BEELAIN have gifted us with inspiration and mirth, proving that even the smallest voices may carry the most beautiful blossoming ideas, like a garden tended with love and laughter. THE NATION OF BALIAN IS BLESSED TO BE SETTLED along the fertile southern coasts. Beaches line the roads which connect nation to nation, framing them for all who walk, run or ride along them. Portoregne, the crowning city of the Balianese, equally revels in the bounty these coasts bring. Connected by a singular bridge, the city sits atop its own personal island and is encased in its own coastline.

OVERLOOKING THE CITY IN ALL OF ITS VIBRANT GLORY is the flora; vegetation, flowers and trees which fill the field and plain, growing in abundance to decorate the mountainside and to feed both the wildlife, and the people who live off of their gifts.

OVER TIME, THE BALIANESE PEOPLE HAVE PLACED MEANING AND PURPOSE on these various plants found amongst their land. Some significant for their meaning, or some for their value in food and drink and medicine. They have cultivated and developed an abundance of uses for the plantlife, and it is uncommon to find a household without some variation of significant flowers within.

THE EVLAVEIA BLOOM

WILD GROWN AND SCATTERED WITHIN THE WOODLAND, which surround the city of Portoregne, these blooms  are used as a symbol of dedication, and were given between friends and lovers as a sign of a promise. A small bunch of these could be rather insulting, insinuating that the giver of the arrangement did not invest enough time into their harvest. A large and blossoming assortment, however, could symbolize a deep reference for the giftee.

The Evlaveia Bloom grows in various neutral tones of white, yellow and orange, but it is not uncommon to find dyed versions sold within the local florists.

THE LUMINES LOULOUDI

A FLOWER LOVED BY THE LUMINE GARU, hence its name. It is known to grow within bushes that surround homes and buildings. Its seeds are scattered by the Garu as it flies about in the early morning, to sing its waking song. This resulted in the flower having no one particular place of growth. They blossom in the late spring and early summer, and with so many petals on each bud, were a vibrant reminder that the comforting heat of the summer was closing in.

THE RUBECIA ROOT

A FLOWER AND ROOT DUO WHICH COULD BE FOUND FARMED AMONGST A CROP of root vegetables. Capable of growing woven in a feel of potatoes, carrots and so on, this flower was a hardy delicacy enjoyed by the Balianese both visually, and through eating or drinking. Its blossomed flower made it easy to identify amongst the crops, with its stem topped with what appear to be red berry-like buds which never truly bloom. These themselves could be used as a garnish to a dish and are known to be fairly sweet.

The root of the plant grows rather thick, akin to ginger in its shape. It can be chopped and used in replacement of a vegetable or stewed in water to create a sweet syrup.

THE CAVALLIS BLOOM

KNOWN IN COMMON AS THE KNIGHT’S FAVOR, This simple, pure white flower is commonly handed out by Knights and Dames as a token favour at jousts and other noble games. With six large and slightly curled petals, several of them in a bunch create a voluminous and striking arrangement on their own. Their stems are often kept long to add to the image of grandeur. A bunch of all opened blossoms signified an appreciation for the individual that was public and known, whilst one that was scattered with buds still to come to bloom eluded to something that still needed more time.

THE ACULEATA FLOWER

A THORNY THING OF A FLOWER THAT IS FOUND GROWING AMONGST THE ROADSIDE  bushes that border the southern beaches. It is assumed that these flowers once began their days within the desert of Balian’s founding land, and over time, they adapted to the danger that came within the heated, tropical sands.

The plant grows in abundance, but its buds and leaves are extremely small. Thorns ward away hungry predators- which ensures the plant has the best possible chance or survival where vegetation was once scarce.

THE ORANGE TREE

THE ORANGE TREE, A POPULAR CITRUS FOUND GROWING WITHIN, noble gardens and greenhouses as well as the Palace of Portoregne’s courtyard. It is said that the Queen Consort, Her Majesty Kathryn of Rhen, favors the fruit to a point where whole festivals are themed around them. The Orange Tree thrives in the southern heat, and is characterized by its delicate white flowers which grow amongst the oranges themselves.

THE SOLVIS TREE

A TREE AS OLD AS BALIAN ITSELF, the solivs, known also as an oliver tree is both a staple and testament to both the Balianese landscape and culture itself. With short-twisted branches and short leaves can be found upon the rolling plains to even the estates of the peerage and royalty alike. With gnarled, twisting trunks and leaves coloured of silvery-green, the tree, mighty and gentle, is a known source for the shade amongst the Balianese. Furthermore, the smalle, golden-hued fruits borne by the branches of the tree itself yields rich flavours and oil, seeing its use in nearly most if not all Balianese meals.

THE MOONFIG TREE

A TREE OF MYSTERY AND SUBTLE REVERENCE, the Moonfig has come to be known as a staple for Balianese gardens and orchards alike, with pale silver leaves in colour that rustle amongst the warm coastal winds. Unlike most if not many fruit-carrying trees in the lands, harvesting from the moonfig tree comes beneath the moon as opposed to the sun. Delicate, this purple-skinned fruit is known to ripen only in the depths of night when the sun has passed. The uniqueness of this fig has thus attracted an almost mythical and folklore status on its origins. The Moonfig’s fruit is delicate, soft to the touch and enjoyed fresh, dried or fermented into wine. Due to its sweetness, the fruit is known to provide a fair and good taste, fermentation into wine offers a distinct taste from grapes. Saps of the moonfig is known to be turned into balms and paste, often to treat dry skin from the Balianese heat.

Yet, the mystery of the tree does not conclude in its origins. Introduced by Cardinal Ivan Lotharia, the Moonfig holds significant cultural importance. It is said that those in courtship who share a Moonfig fruit beneath its branches under a full moon will find their hearts forever entwined. Moonfig saplings are often blessed by priests of cannondom, believed to bring wisdom and prosperity to the land they occupy. In some archipelagos, its twisted and gnarled wood is carved into charms, thought to ward off restless spirits and guide dreamers toward good fortune.

THE BALIANESE CONSIDER THEMSELVES BLESSED FOR THE ABUNDANCE OF plant life that they are able to live from. They have seen their home change and mould through desert to lush and tropical sun, and so did the vegetation they lived alongside. Now, in Aevos, there is never a lack of something growing around and within the city. Homes are decorated with flower boxes outside each window, fruit trees thrive along roadside and in gardens.

A KINGDOM IS BUILT TO LAST, HOWEVER MANY DON'T. It is for the reason we must celebrate such major milestones for when a Kingdom reaches them. It is almost one hundred and fifty years since JOHN ‘THE FOUNDER’ followed the Constellation of SAINT LOTHAR to found the then Grand Duchy of Balian. This occasion can only be marked and celebrated with an entire year of celebrations and festivities of which the entire continent is invited to.

AS WITH OUR FOREBEARS, we shall host events from the Crown, Courts and the Noble houses of Balian, displaying various facets of our culture and people. These shall take up the entirety of the one hundred and fiftieth annum, of which shall be overcome with celebrations and several chances to participate in Balianese culture.

WE SHALL BEGIN AS FESTIVALS SO OFTEN DO, with a feast in the feasting room of the Palatio Arancione. Three courses of meal and a variety of drinks shall be offered to everyone who wishes to engage in the festivity. The food will come from the kitchens of the Palace and prepared by the Royal Chef and the drinks will be sourced from the Royal Wine Cellar. Those in attendance will also receive a commemorative silver token that shall only be given at the feast and no other event.

II. GARDEN PARTY

A DAY TO RELAX AND ENJOY THE PRESENT COMPANY AROUND ONESELF, Houses d’Arkent and Temesch shall host a party in the gardens of SUNHOLDT. There shall be several party games to enjoy and beverages offered from the renowned d’Arkent wine cellars. All shall revel in the beauteous vegetation and the company of their friends and strangers alike under the beating sun of Balian.

III. ROYAL TOURNEY

A tournament hosted by the Crown

THE SPECTACLE OF COMBAT PULLS THE GAZES OF ALL, and as such, the CROWN shall host their own tourney for the denizens of Aevos. This shall first begin with a simple jousting competition, with a mina incentive for the winner of the tournament. After this we shall witness a team melee combat take place, where groups of allies or strangers will band together and fight other groups with blades, also in order to gain a mina prize.

IV. PLAY OF THE FOUNDING

A dramatic retelling of our founding by the Kingdom of Beelian

WITH THE PRINCE OF MONTEROSA’S STUDIES INTO BALIANESE HISTORY, the Kid Kingdom of Beelian has opted to host a play about the founding of our great nation. Following the then Prince John of the Orenian Empire, as he finds himself leading the Imperial Loyalist Diaspora leaving the heartlands for the deserts dunes. The Star of St Lothar led him in all his faith to eventually found the Grand Duchy of Balian.

V. NOBLE EXHIBITION

An exhibition of Balian’s noble heritage hosted by Houses Vuiller and Ruthern

A LOT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED IN ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS, and this truly ought to be displayed and presented to the Balianese people. HOUSE VUILLER and HOUSE RUTHERN shall present many relics from Balianese history including those of general history and noble heritage in both Balian and its Imperial predecessor. Those of the Kingdom who do not harbour a great understanding of our Kingdom’s great history will be able to uncover a wide array of historical facts.

VI. SCAVENGER HUNT AND FASHION AUCTION

FASHION IS A FAVOURITE TOPIC OF MANY,  and as such House de Lyons shall host an auction of various dresses, garbs and sets of armour in order to raise for the Crown's tireless work. Everyone is suggested to give to the auction in order to give more options and chances to buy beautiful fashion. At the same time House Tuvia shall host a scavenger for all to take part in, spanning over the entire Kingdom, mountain to sea. Such shall come with some incredible prizes so be sure to seek it out!

TO END THE YEAR’S FESTIVITIES OFF, a great ball shall be hosted in the ballroom of the Palatio Arancione for everyone to engage in. The dress code is simple, dress within the bounds of your House colours, be it Royal, Noble or commoner. Take pride in your heritage and those who paved the way for you and your family and dance the entire evening away. A prize shall be levied for whoever dresses in such a manner that best honours those who came before them so make sure you have the best outfit for the ball!

IN THE YEAR OF 148 B.A.

AS ENDURING AS THE PEOPLE WHO ONCE INHABITED DESERTS, the wildlife which thrived alongside them in their early home have adapted and evolved. Once wild creatures of sands and heat now turned domesticated companions of the noble woman or common man. Canines, critters and avifauna- all of which had seen centuries of change to forge the beloved animals we as Balianese see today.

FAMILIES OF THE BALIANESE WERE RARELY WITHOUT SOME FORM OF COMPANION, be they used for work in the fields which bordered Portoregne with their golden crop of wheat, as guardians within battle, or simply as a loyal family companion. The breeds found alongside the Balian peoples were therefore varied and threaded meticulously in order to fit the needs of their owners, though it is said that dogs in Balian’s culture are revered as not only steadfast and loyal companions but also as members of one's personal family.

FROM THE TOWERING MIGHT AND POWERS THAT ARE THE BALIANESE WARHOUNDS, that retain prominence within the Regiments of the Balianese foot soldiers, to being breeds that often guard and settle themselves upon the estates of the realms peers. But such does not end there, Great flocks of sheep and cattle that roam the islands of Balian are watched over by vigilant and obedient herders, whilst the capital itself is often seen as an amalgamation of most dogs, though it is dominated by the grace and presence of lapdogs, symbols of status and companionship. These breeds and many more have become indispensable to the culture and daily lives for anyone who claims themselves as Balianese.

I. CANINES

The Mont Hound

TRANSLATED DIRECTLY TO MOUNTAIN HOUND IN THE BALIANESE TONGUE, this beast of a canine lived true to its name. Robust, powerful and regal all at once, this animal was often found at the flank of warriors, prolific Knights and even Commanders. They were the steadfast counterparts of many who risked their lives in battle for the Balianese and their allies. These hounds in appearance are most notably known for their broad chests and large size. However, despite appearances, these hounds still carry themselves with a frightening pace, sure to terrify any who stood in their path.

The coat of this canine is short, almost velvet like to the touch. Their ears are noticeably short and to a point, akin to those of cats, and they range in shades of grey to taupe.

The Rosa Cavalier

FOR THE HUNTERS THE ROSA CAVALIER, A CANINE BREED WHICH DERIVED ITS NAME FROM ITS SLEEK, swift and agile torso with deep chests and lean bodies, and the reddish-rust hue of its coat. These creatures were originally bred in the continent of Almaris to hunt for small game critters such as hares, foul and sometimes small deer. However as the diaspora of  Balianese arrived onto Aevos, many came to realize that the rolling plains often found between the various archipelagos, as well as much of the Kingdom’s lands not hindered by mountains or the edges of forests, were ripe for the canines who were known for their speed and keen eyesight. This made them an indispensable and favoured breed amongst the nobility with some even finding their way within the ranks of the Regiment as tracking dogs.

The Balianese Shepherd Dog

TOWERING AND THICK-BONED CAME THE BALIANESE SHEPHERD DOG, whose purpose served the various farmers and shepherds of the Balianese within Aevos. With thick coats and personalities derived from their Highlandic predecessors, these traits made them ideal in winter months of the south. They were known for their lengthy temperament and patient personalities,and were the obvious breed of canine for the duty of watching and defending the livestock of the Balian folk. Known to be fierce and protective, yet gentle with what they perceived as their own, KING JOHN I, the founding father of Balian, was rumored to have a pair of Balianese Shepherds which remained away from the prying eyes of the public but were always by his and his wife’s side in private.

The Short Tailed San

A FAIRLY NEW BREED OF CANINE DERIVED FROM COMPANION HOUNDS OF THE MIDLANDS. The Short-Tailed San’s, translated to Short-Tailed Saints, are well known for their lovability and empathy toward their owners. Predecessors of plains hunting dogs, their natural instinct to protect and chase down prey is put into play when standing alongside their families. However, having been used as lap dogs for decades, this energy was oftentimes replaced with a want for affection and rest. It was not uncommon to find such a creature standing besides noble ladies, Princesses and even Queens.

It is rumoured that the LADY ISIDORA BASRID was amongst the first to introduce the San’s to the Portoregne Palace. This dog has, in turn, become quite the companion to HIS HIGHNESS, PRINCE LOTHAR.

II. CRITTERS

The Blind Sand Snake

A CREATURE WHOSE HERITAGE IS ROOTED IN THE HISTORY OF BALIAN AND ITS PEOPLE. Centuries ago, as the Grand Duchy was founded within the desert sands, its people came to meet and to cohabitate with the wildlife around them. One such reptile was the Sand-Snake. A predator of small animals and all the way to birds, this snake was known to grow up to six feet in length, if it was able to survive ‘till such a time. Curiously, this breed of snake grew no eyes, and instead sensed its prey through sound and vibrations within the sands. 

During the development of the Grand Duchy, the bustling crowds and echoes of construction and labour which rang through the desert became the cause for a great diminish in the Sand-Snake’s population, as many assumed the vibrations to be that of food, to only be met with frightened humans.

In current times, many of the remaining population are kept as pets. Those found within the surrounding plains of Balian are derived from unfortunate cases in which pets were released and allowed to multiply. No longer able to hide within desert sands, they can instead be found burrowed under fresh soul and heavy brushland.

The Taupe-Coat

AFFECTIONATELY NAMED AFTER THE HUE OF ITS COAT, the Taupe-Coat cat has been a staple of Balianese households since well before its founding. This breed, once derived from sand-cats of the desert, retained only its color as evidence of its heritage. Its temperament was often independent, with many of its kind opting to roam outdoors as opposed to in. Feral kind were known to birth litters up to six at a time, with offspring ranging from- assuming both parents were of the same breed- a pale tan to a dark grey-brown, with stripes of black not particularly uncommon. Their ears were oddly short for their size, out or proportioned but still functional. Their defining feature was that of their tail; a long, bushy thing which, when fully grown, measured the length of their entire body

The Southern Shore Gazelle

A BREED OF ANIMAL FOUND EXCLUSIVELY WITHIN THE TROPICAL SOUTH, its home that of the mountainous plains which surrounded Portoregne, and Balian as a whole. Often found traversing the cliffside, these Gazelle were keen hunting game for the budding Knight, warrior or indeed, hunter. It was rare for farmers to attempt to herd them, and instead they were left to roam wild and free. Their coats took on the hues of the trees which surrounded them, pinkish brown and oftentimes, even darker. The females were the primary guards of the family, with their horns growing well past the length of their ears, whilst it was the males who reared young after birth. 

The Balianese utilized the Gazelle’s meat in a variety of local dishes. Stews, steaks and meat pies were amongst some of the more common food items.

The Balianese Brown-Feathered Eagle

A REGAL CREATURE KEPT ONLY BY TRAINED BIRDMASTERS. This bird was known to many as the IMPERATOR DE LA SAMA - EMPEROR OF THE SKY, an omen whispered by the original settlers of the south which had been passed through generations. It was known for its hostile temperament whilst roaming free in the wilds. So much so, that families with small pets and dogs were instructed to keep them within arms reach.  

Those who dared learn the art of bird keeping; falconers, aviary masters and so on, had learned various tricks of the trade to ensure the animal was kept calm and under control, whilst in proper care. Their diet in captivity was kept strictly to mice, rats and sometimes rabbits. In the wild, they were known to chase even cats and small dogs.

The Lumine Garnu

WITH A SONG AS BRIGHT AS ITS NAMESAKE, which translated to Luminous Yellow, this beautiful yellow breasted bird brought life to the woodland that surrounded Portoregne and Balian’s vassals. It nested high within the towering, tropical shrub that grew along the roads between settlement and home, and its song was heard every morning, drawing the Balianese into a new day. Whilst these birds could be kept as pets, there was no particular benefit of doing so. They could be trained to follow basic ‘here and there’ recall, but otherwise, were an entirely wild animal.

The Orange Chested Fowl

FARMED AKIN TO CHICKENS BY BALIANESE FARMERS BOTH PAST AND PRESENT, these birds were, and still are considered a wild breed, though just as many have been domesticated over the years. Those found within the wildlands are more sturdy and feral, with a tendency to peck and chase even the tallest of humans. Those kept by farmers are often fatter and calmer, bred to produce more meat and with a more manageable temperament.
