In the year of our Lord 2079

ÖHNE UND TÖCHTER VON REINMAR,

I HAVE WANDERED ABOUT THE VOICELESS HALLS OF MY FATHER’S LAND FOR TOO LONG, and with it came only a quick realization. Retreating for these many days to my scriptures, it must be grasped that as the prince cannot stand to gain from this; nor can the kinsmen I aim so eagerly to honor. I realized then that I had to awaken from my dormancy, for the tribe needs not a prince who sits idly by.

The many months after my late forebear’s passing had left me adrift, and it is because of this we have been left without direction in this plight. However it is today that this shall be subject to change, as the light of God’s beacon in the skies has given me much hope for the tribe. As I exit from my hall atop the mount from whence I was brought into the world a mere eaglet, and emerge now an eagle. Our iron has begun to rust, the oak of the shields have begun to rot, and it is with this notion I declare there shall be a shifting in direction from which our shields hastily approach.

The sacred moot hall shall roar with the voices of the Reinmaren, and there will be debate. My council shall be set in stone, and the warriors and laborers of my tribe will see their voices heard to the ear of the chieftain and the lawspeaker of the tribe. Wisdom will be passed forth to those seeking it with both head and heart. Blades will be reforged, much as the mind. Shields will be granted an immense and unmatchable sum of fortitude again, as will the heart; and the manes of our steeds will glisten like the golden fields of wheat that line Leonstadt. Be not late, and forget not the importance of this moot, for the tribe will prosper greatly under our kinsmen’s guidance.

T’was early light before the birds woke that Siegfried set foot on board a ship, bound for the open seas. Following a path only few of his ancestors would venture down, the annals of Reinmaren history took fervent hold of the Prince’s mind. He was compelled by some will in his blood to wander and seek answers.

Many miles from the shores of Azuras, the Prince’s ship steadied onward East into the rising sun. Upon first light, there beyond the horizon, a large mast rose from the depths. Her beams were rotted, turned to sponge after decades of being submerged. Her sails, thin as parchment yet never tearing. As the hull emerged, so too did it have the qualities of driftwood, caked in algae and barnacles. This wretched shape was merely no abandoned ship left behind. Nay, this were a dead man’s ship; the Withered Wail. A ghastly vessel, crewed by the most obscene and grotesque beings neither alive nor dead. Their skin rendered to jelly from sea-slug mucus, and their brains turned to soap. They did not seek riches or renown, merely acting on instinct for an insatiable bloodlust.
 

Siegfried held firm, ordering his crew to prepare. His ship, no more than a mere trading vessel, was armed with a few cannons. The Withered Wail had no intention of engaging from a distance. Without warning, a swirling, raging storm gathered overhead. The gale filled the deadmen’s sails fully, allowing them to sprint across the water toward Siegfried’s ship.

With a mighty crash, the Withered Wail rammed through the bow of the Barclay vessel, knocking good men off and to the depths. The deadmen aboard quickly vaulted from their deck with axe and sword. Without fear, Siegfried rallied his crew to charge the attackers head on. The storm grew worse, and a torrent of wind and rain swept across the ships. The Prince’s mace made quick work of the deadmen, but his crew were not so fortunate. Many had fallen to their blades, and those that cowered, leapt into the sea believing they could escape, but were soon swallowed by the waves.

Soon the rain subsided, but the wind still rocked the ships violently.

In desperation, Siegfried ordered what was left of his crew to gather the black powder and head for the bow. At the bow, where the Withered Wail had breached, the crew climbed aboard the deadmen’s vessel with kegs of powder, and set them along the walls of the hull while their crew was distracted.

Leaving a few men to dispatch the deadmen still on deck, Siegfried climbed to the stern, dipping an arrow wrapped in cloth, into a barrel of whale oil before igniting it with a lantern nearby. One of the deadmen snuck up behind Siegfried and plunged his sword into the Prince’s back. He cried out in pain before turning around and bashing the deadman to pieces with his mace. Struggling to take aim, Siegfried drew back his bowstring and loosed the arrow onto the Withered Wail, striking the powder, and igniting a massive explosion. The blast obliterated the dead ship, but struck the powder inside the men’s ship as well, causing a chain reaction. Bleeding out from his wounds, Siegfried closed his eyes, breathed calmly, and gave a final prayer as he gazed upon his immediate oblivion.

Most recently was I held captive by the Salvoman and the devil; from the result of injury and the recovery that follows, I struggle to fulfil some tasks on my lonesome. I thus call forth unto the stout-hearted and the steadfast, so that they might attend my person and stand as an aide in my hour of need. Duties may include handling my social appointments, assisting with the care of my pets (a most beloved gyrfalcon and many faeries), assisting with travel, and other typical duties like that of a handmaid or servant.

THE HOUSE VON WESENBURG IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE the birth of not one, but two children unto the Burgrave and Burgravine. The firstborn child, named ROSLIND TEREZA, was born healthy in the year 2071 after an incredibly difficult pregnancy for the Burgravine. With her mother’s eyes and her auburn locks, the young girl has charmed herself already to the people with her bright smile and calm demeanor. 

ONLY ONE YEAR LATER, the Heir of the House was born after a much easier carry for the Lady von Wesenburg. The spitting image of his father and predecessors, LEOFWINE ALBERICH has proven similarly easy-going to his elder sister in his first months, happiest at the side of his mother and father around the keep and enjoying strolls in the gardens.

AFTER MUCH TIME TO HEAL AND BOND WITH THE CHILDREN, the Burgravine has made a full recovery thanks to the prayers and well wishes of close family and friends. Enough thanks and blessings cannot be given for the health and safety of the family. May GOD in His glory continue to bless the family in the years ahead, and may both children inherit the wisdom and grace of their parents alike.

In the quiet hours before dawn, as the bells of Reinmar lay silent,  Sir Stanton rested in the hearth of his manor.  His hands, once steady enough to guide a lance, now rested on the coat of his beloved mastiff.

“Once more…”

Shakily, a hand rose the ivory flames of Malchadiel flowing from his palm towards the hearth-fire. The fire burnt white forming images, memories of his younger self.  Battles both won and lost, moments of camaraderie and betrayal, none of it stirred regret.

“I stood when I was needed,”  he told himself.  “I did not flee when the road grew hard. If that is all a knight of Tylos  may ask of himself, then I am content.”

Faces passed through the white flames, Comrades long fallen, Chieftains served faithfully, kin raised beneath Reinmar’s walls. He thought of the land itself, the Runestones, the cold mornings, the banners snapping above the city. 

“Reinmar will endure,  with or without me.  As she always has.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Let the young bear the sword now. Let them make their own mistakes, their own victories. I Pray….”

As the last of his strength ebbed, his heart calmed. No battlefield would claim him, no dramatic last stand mark his end, no heroic blaze of glory as his father and uncles had perished in. Sir Stanton Stroheim, the  “Iron Stag” released his final breath, his life ended not in valor or fury, but in quiet honor.

To Annaliese Stroheim: I bequeath my recipe for narcotic brownies and the Azhl dart “Death's Dance” to you. Once belonging to Lady Viktoria Ivanocich, it is fitting it be left with a lady of our tribe.

To Gottbrand Stroheim: I gift you the daemonsteel sword Finisterklinge along with the sheath of flame, along with my first weapon, the Daemonsteel Chain-flail

To Dettlaff Stroheim: I entrust you with the general custodianship of our tribe's relics, along with the schematics for Blæcestān.

SECTION I - INTRODUCTION

The aim of this publication is to provide an accurate (at the time of publication) record of various Canonist sites throughout the Kingdom of Burgundy, constructed since our arrival in Gottesland up to the publication date of 639 A.A.

This is subdivided into the type of Canonist site, ranging from churches to the humble shrines that line the roads of the kingdom, as well as miscellaneous sites of interest to Canonists. Subsections I-V will list the name of the site, provide a description of its location, and any other information deemed of interest. The publication will conclude with Section III, containing some notes and plans for future publications from the author.

SECTION II - THE KINGDOM OF BURGUNDY

Section II.I - Churches

1. A church, located on the west side of the capital of the Empire of Man, Rittersberg, across the river out of Hadrian’s Gate. It is associated with the Abbey at the same location.
2. The Church of Saints Johann and Nicolas, located within the Reinmaren town of Leonstadt, beside the main square.
3. A church on a hill within the territory of the Van Aerts. It is undedicated, and its interior is not publicly accessible.
4. The Chapel of the Wardfather, servicing the people of the Duchy of Valwyck in the town of Tarnavon. This is located along the road north-west of Rittersberg. Whilst named publicly as a chapel, the author sees fit to categorise it as a church due to its function. It is particularly dedicated to Haeseni holy figures.
5. The Church of the Fifty Skulls, located in the south-west quarter of the Alban town of Saint Godwinsburg. Named for the fifty victims of the shipwreck of the Anna Lorena as they made their way to Gottesland, it is the resting place of their remains, including those of Edward and Cecily Alstion. It is associated with the Abbey of Saint Alexander of Furnestock.

Section II.II - Monastic Foundations

1. An abbey located on the west side of Rittersberg, across the river out of Hadrian’s Gate. It is attached to the Cathedral Church. Within the Abbey are numerous shrines and other locations of interest to Canonist worshippers.
2. The Abbey of the Canons Regular of Saint Godwin of Paradisus, home of the Godewiner Canonry and a brewery of lagers. This is located on a hill to the south-west of Rittersberg, accessible via a path that leads south from Hadrian’s Gate.
3. The Monastery of the Wayward Heart, located to the south side of Rittersberg in the Garrison Quarter.
4. The Abbey of Venerable Anton, located opposite the Reinmaren town of Leonstadt. The Abbey is extensive, with an Abbey Church, private Chapel, and numerous shrines both within and just outside the monastic complex. The Abbey is private, though does offer plentiful lodgings and hospitality for pilgrims.
5. The Priory of Saint Otto, presumably of Vanderfell, located within the town of Tarnavon in the Duchy of Valwyck. It is attached to the local Church, and is similarly a site of veneration for Haeseni holy figures.
6. The Abbey of Saint Alexander of Furnestock, located within the Alban town of Saint Godwinsburg, attached to the Cathedral of Fifty Skulls. Other than a building for monastics to live in, it contains ample facilities for teaching; a library, classroom, museum and a debating hall, which all seem to be designed primarily for the secular university, ‘The Prince’s Institution’.

Section II.III - Chapels

1. The Seneschal’s Chapel, located within Rittersberg. Best accessed from the Marcosian gate, it is to the north of the main square, beside the City Hall. 
2. The Chapel of Blessed John Sigismund. It is a small chapel located at the hamlet of ‘Little Furnestock’, located past the bridge to the Alban town of Saint Godwinsburg.
3. The public chapel of the Von Kanunsberg family. It is located just outside the keep of the Duchy of Kanunsberg, in the Principality of Reinmar. This is visible atop a peninsular north-west of the Principality of Reinmar, west from Rittersberg

Section II.IV - Shrines 

1. A shrine to Saint Godwin of Paradisus, on the path to the Alban Barony of Artois.
2.  A shrine to Saint Lucien of Ulmsbottom outside the seat of House D’Amaury in the County of Metz, on a hill west of Rittersberg.
3. A shine to Saint Robert of Metz in the suburb of 'Little Lorraine', to the west of Rittersberg outside Hadrian’s Gate.
4. Two shrines to Saint Daniel of Al’Khazar and Saint Waldo the Wayfarer sit outside the main and side gates of the Abbey of Venerable Anton respectively.
5. A series of shrines mark the road to the Duchy of Valwyck:

- Saint Otto of Vanderfell

- Saint Rudolph of Markev

- Saint High Pontiff Daniel I of Abresi

- Exalted Sigismund

       VI. A shrine to Saint Otto of Vanderfell, Saint Henrik-Otto of Alban, Saint Karl of Petrus, and Saint Joren of Paradisus sits in the square of the Duchy of Valwyck’s town of Tarnavon.

Section II.V - Other Locations of Interest

1. The rectory of the diocese of Saint Thomas of Gaekrin, located within the suburb of  ‘Little Lorraine’, to the west of Rittersberg outside Hadrian’s Gate.
2. The chapterhouse of the Abbey of Venerable Anton, an outpost within Rittersberg. 

SECTION III - AUTHOR’S NOTES

For the sake of time and trouble, this publication only covers those sites that are publicly available, and henceforth of easy access to dedicated pilgrims, or those simply interested. A future edition, following correspondence with the owners of the various keeps throughout the Kingdom of Burgundy, may list sites such as the various private chapels that would require some effort for a pilgrim to access. Similarly, the subsection on ‘Shrines’ is restricted to shrines outside of walled settlements, with a focus on wayshrines that are accessible to pilgrims and other travellers. With a future edition, this may change. Likewise, a future edition may include a map, though this has proven impractical to source at the current time.

The publication originally had a subsection on ‘Cathedrals’, which was instead subsumed into the ‘Churches’ subsection. This is because, in contrast to the previous continent, the effective and efficient division of territories into bishoprics and archbishoprics, led by bishops and archbishops respectively, has not been carried over. Instead in its place is the Temple of the True Faiths’s system of both diocese and magistracy, which for some years has not been elaborated upon, in absence of Canon Law. Regardless, the current situation means that there are no churches that can be described as functioning as a cathedral in the Kingdom of Burgundy.

A later edition of this publication will contain additions as more Canonist sites are founded throughout the Kingdom of Burgundy, as it inevitably expands. Furthermore, the author is intrigued by the possibility of expanding the scope of this study to the Kingdom of Idunia and the Empire of Man as a whole, though this will require patronage in the form of monetary funding to be a worthwhile endeavour.

The author hopes by the time a new edition is published, the surprising lack of wayshrines on the roadways of the Kingdom of Burgundy noted on his travels will have been rectified.

Erwin Barclay departed the walls of Leonstadt without banners nor the sounds of horn. Nor were there summons or a call for court. He left Leonstadt as if it were a house he long tended; he took nothing that would be missed.

At dawn, he passed the final roadstone, alone. He’d carefully lay the belongings he took with him by the rich treeline; he had no use for them anymore. He’d set aside his blade and instead elected to carry a stick worn by his many travels to assist him as he continued into the wilderness.
 

The forest did not bar his path. The earth yielded beneath his boots as it had for many others before him. He did not carry the typical gait seen in a Chieftain, he allowed himself rest when his breath shortened. He did not feel the urgency he typically felt, instead he walked without haste.

Once evening arrived, he’d find a quiet rise overlooking the land. There he sat upon a stone; he enjoyed the freedom of the earth. This peaceful rise is where he would rest, he decided. He’d lay his back onto the earth and stone, his staff placed aside.

When the new day had broken, he did not wake. He knew peace beneath the eagle’s wing.

FROM THE ABBEY OF VENERABLE ANTON

Greetings,

The Abbey of Venerable Anton is looking for those good Canonist humans who wish to enter monastic life, or wish to receive guidance and direction on how to enter the priesthood. 

Furthermore, we are willing to temporarily take in those good Canonist humans who wish to learn medicine under Sister Frederica, but do not wish to commit themselves to a monastic life. Those undergoing teaching shall enter into an agreement with the abbey as a postulant, agreeing to uphold the same moral, Canonist values as a good Antonite monk throughout this time, without being bound to the abbey or taking monastic vows. Those who wish to enter a monastic life as an Antonite and undertake training as a physician are preferred.

The Abbey of Venerable Anton itself offers its services to the wider Canonist world, particularly the following:

• As a neutral location for the settling of disputes, diplomatic talks and other discussions
• As mediators of disputes
• As a location for pilgrimages, and a temporary home for those who wish to hide away from the world and seek the comfort and guidance of God
• As a place of temporary sanctuary for those Canonist humans left without a home or seeking aid
• To offer guidance to those who are lost, or simply an attentive ear and open mind to listen to one’s woes
• To safeguard valuables and other material things
• As Executors of wills

This list is not exhaustive, and those in need may send a bird or place a letter in the letterbox outside the gate opposite Reinmar to enquire about other unlisted requests.

The library collection of the Abbey of Venerable Anton is viewable under supervision by appointment, for clergy or scholars, on a case-by-case basis. Offers of book trading or purchase are welcome.

THE INFIRMARY OF ST. AMYAS OF YORE IS A PLACE OF HEALING WITHIN THE ABBEY OF VENERABLE ANTON. The healers of St. Amyas are committed to providing support to travelers, pilgrims, and their fellow brothers and sisters. The purpose of the infirmary is to treat illnesses and injuries, provide herbal treatments, and provide charity for the poor.

ROLES OF THE INFIRMARY OF ST. AMYAS

Head Physician of Ven. Anton - Sister Frederica

The highest authority over the infirmary. Oversees all healing practices, discipline, and training. 

Senior Physician

Experienced physicians who take on more life-threatening cases and train others.

Physician

Physicians oversee illnesses, treat wounds, make remedies, and patient recovery. They focus on more moderate cases compared to the Senior Physicians.

Surgeon

Surgeons care for more severe wounds, performing procedures such as stitching and other operations.

RECRUITMENT

We invite individuals who are interested in joining the monastic order of Venerable Anton and are willing to adhere to its rules. They must be pious, human, men or women, with a willingness to serve GOD and tend to those in need with discipline and humility. We will provide food, shelter, and guidance as befitting a member of the order. If interested in this opportunity, write a letter to Sister Frederica.

Our levies are modest; most holdings may be claimed for but TWENTY-FIVE to THIRTY-FIVE mina.

Moreover, any who take up residence within the next TWO Saint’s Months shall be granted freedom from taxation for the first TWO Saint’s Weeks! Those who swear service within the Order of Saint Tylos shall earn a tax boon of up to half remitted.

The competition is one that touches on a very important subject in our lands - ALCOHOL! As of the Saints day of today . . We have ran out of our Ale, und alcohol in general besides crappy foreign exports - and therefore - we have no more to serve our lands! And with such, this competition will be a brewing competition .. Whoever brews the BEST alcohol shall be given the reward of fifty mina - as well as will have their stock served in the Drunken Maiden to have the name live on!

COMPETITION ENTRY RULES:

• You must be Waldenian, Reinmaren, or currently working on becoming such!
• Have prepared a stack of the alcohol, as such will be served in the tavern for your publicity. 
• If you cannot attend, you may drop off your alcohol crate anyway to be tasted anyway. You CAN win without presence, we do no care about you - we care about your alcohol!
• Somewhere on your bottle must have a label stating your name, family, or tribe. As well state that it is Reinmaren made, or Waldenic in nature!

Princess Wilhelmina von Brandthof portrayed

 with her daughter Johanna and son Siegfried.

 

When amidst the harrowing winds of winter a babe is brought to the world, a good mother knows to cradle it to sleep by the hearth and often feed it warm milk. Only then can it continue to grow healthy, tall, and happy.

Yet even the fittest body, the hardest muscle and the sharpest mind does not grant any Man to evade the one equal and finite law that is death. The winter-born daughter of Brandthof, who despite the biting frost had not been held in warmth, had many occasions to learn this well. The first of which was that the Baron and Baroness of Brandthof let their love fade and parted ways, leaving their children behind.

“These days my home harbors a quietness so intense it hurts the ears.” She once told the mother of her husband, High Chieftess of the Reinmaren. In her eyes, Frederica was a gift sent to her by the Lord to keep her from wilting of sorrow. “I hope the earth breaks open beneath me first, before I inflict a hurt like this upon my children.”

“Let the Flame guide you, and you will be a good mother, my dear.” Frederica spoke gently, her soft fingers reaching to soothe the dry and lanky hands of her ward. “No doubt, a better Chieftess—yet a good mother still.”

Before Frederica could see it come true, she had died sleeping in her bed. After that went her beloved aunts, Gertrude and Josefina. Some, like Wilhelmina’s ward, Felicie, had their guts clawed inside out by the merciless werebeasts terrorizing the tribe. Some were slain the day the enemy breached into the Palace during the War of Crown and Crozier. Pyre by pyre, their corpses burned into eternal peace, and the Chieftess’ heart bled for each.

As a bleeding heart runs dry, a sharp mind dulls over time with age. Faces started to fade away from her memory, her tongue tangled on names and words. A proud woman such as she could not stand to become a bed-ridden, spoon-fed burden.

Upon the second year of Wilhelmina’s descent into, what she knew would finish in her end, she told her physician and chambermaids to go away and not bother her until they’d be preparing her body for the pyre. Then she arranged for herself and Erwin to walk through the gardens.

“Listen to me, my husband.” She spoke to him by a secluded pond, where no one could listen to them talk. “I have grown old. My will is strong, but I can feel time stealing the reins of my mind from my hands. If I do not let go now, it will steer me into senile madness. It is time for me.”

“If this is what you believe you must, do so.” The Chieftain did reply. Sadness visibly crept into his gaze, yet for now, his will did not yield to emotion. “Perhaps our ancestors already await you.”

The Chieftess’ hands lifted the diadem off her brow. The gold clanging on the wood of the tabletop rang in the heavy silence. She looked at it for the last time.

Then she wrangled herself out of the royal gown, remaining in just the chemise, and placed the green tribal cloak around her shoulders. Her gaze befell the crookedly embroidered black Barclay eagle upon the tablecloth her children had once gifted her. She touched it for the last time. 

Just then, when she meant to leave, the prayer beads hanging by her door caught her eye. She reached out and took them with her on the one last journey. 

Thus did Wilhelmina go, despite the cold winds that heralded winter’s return; nothing but the cloak upon her shoulders, prayer beads within her hand, and peace within her mind. It did not matter. She did not need anything when she had the Flame to guide her, where cold would trouble her no more.

 I, Wilhelmina Esther von Brandthof, declare this document as the sole testament of my will. I entrust my son Rudolf Barclay and my nephew, Ludolf von Brandthof to execute it accordingly. 

Unto my husband, Erwin I Barclay, I bestow the seax from my hip, that it may rest at his side as I did for all of our shared years. Furthermore, I grant unto him the dried bouquet of flowers I carried on the day of our union and the living statuettes of Leon Barclay and Frederica Barclay.

To my eldest son, Siegfried Otto Barclay, I leave all of the weapons of my collection—save those here bestowed unto others—and my embroidered warrior’s belt.

All of my regal raiments, furs, long cloaks, clasps and silken slippers, together with the knitting needles of Chieftess Frederica Barclay, are to be borne unto the quarters of the Baron of Sigradz, for his betrothed and future Chieftess to own and to wear. 

My cherished grey wolf pelt I pass unto my dear son, Rudolf Lothar Barclay.

All books of my personal library are to be gifted unto the Abbey of venerable Anton and kept in the care of Frederica Wilhelmina Barclay. My Lorraine pendant shall likewise be hers to wear. 

I wish that Freda von Byrde inherit my shortbow.

The remaining two of my children; Johanna and Owyn Barclay, may divide the rest of my personal belongings, unmentioned in this testament.

THE FOLLOWING RELICS ARE TO BE DONATED TO THE HALL OF HEROES of Leonstadt; the Gelimarison throwing axe and throwing spear from the last War Games in Kretzen; an antique vase from the time of Mori Wars; Prince Leon’s poem to his sister, Gertrude; and the Ernshjelm of Konstanz Barclay.

THE TROPHIES LEFT AFTER PRINCESS ADALFRIEDE OF HEXENWALD are to be placed into the keeping of Erwin Barclay.

THE JEWELS OF PRINCESS FREDERICA AND PRINCESS ADALFRIEDE, per Frederica’s own wish, are to be returned into the princely treasury.

However, if someone wishes to claim that title instead, they can call the Chief of the Feast to a small challenge of their choosing.

His grace wished that, should he have no child to succeed him at the time of passing, the title would be passed on to Duke-Emeritus Theodemar von Kanunsberg, who is to oversee the selection of a successor among his kin. As such, effective immediately, Theodemar von Kanunsberg will be appointed the interim-Duke and given all rights and honours of the title until a successor is selected. With this, the Will of the Kanun, relic-weapon of House von Kanunsberg, will be returned to his grace upon recovery.

What say we ride beyond the walls? You will learn to fish in the river as your forefathers did.

JOSEFINA remembered her childhood as one that was untouched by sorrow. 

The streets of Kretzen that were filled with her laughter as she ran down them, as well as the wooded trails of the Ferdenwald. A time that was untouched by the grief that would later weigh on her. Death was mentioned only during sermons. It did not feel real, and Josefina believed it would always be that way.

But as she grew into adulthood, it felt more real.

Her first true encounter with death was the sudden loss of her mother. Josefina believed she could have done something to prevent that werebeast from killing her. Her father succumbed to his grief only a few months later, becoming yet another memory for Josefina.

She clung to her prayers, not because they would be answered, but because they provided her refuge—as did the priesthood, into which she would be ordained some years after her parents' death.

In her later years, that old joy returned. The smell of incense, beekeeping, and laughter. It remained that way for many years.

Until it no longer did.

She was growing old. The tightness in her chest and the shaking of her hands had been ignored until she could no longer dismiss them.

The illness slowed her steps, though she refused to stop walking. Her flock was her main priority.

Though in time, it was not that easy. 

As she lay in her final days, her thoughts wandered, not to sacraments or rites, but to Kretzen, the Ferdenwald, her parents, and the Franklands that had welcomed the Reinmaren once more.

During her last breaths, she found peace.

Not because she could face death, but in remembering the life that came before it.

Listen well, O kin and hirdsmen of mine;

As one of the great houses of Reinmar, House von Kanunsberg has left its mark upon the world, yet in all of these years its histories, traditions and practices have been much left to oral tradition. 

Let this be no more, in the penning of this document, House von Kanunsberg honours its ancestors, practices and traditions on paper, and proclaims them to those who have ears to hear and eyes to see.

FOUNDING & EARLY YEARS

The von Kanunsberg lineage traces its roots to Gottfried Barclay, second son of the legendary Brandt Barclay, later canonized as Saint Caius Primus. Born into the storied House of Barclay, Gottfried grew under the shadow of his elder brother, Wilheim, heir to the Grand Principality of Minitz. Yet where Wilheim bore the mantle of rulership, Gottfried sought his own path, one of martial excellence, faith, and duty.

In 1938, following his father’s abdication and retreat into the clergy, Gottfried was granted the titular Duchy of Kanunsberg, a cadet branch of House Barclay. The name itself derived from Kanunsberg, the former capital of Minitz, and the Kanun, the ancient Reinmaren code of law. Thus, the von Kanunsbergs were born, a house forged in the traditions of Reinmar yet distinct in its purpose.

THE VELEZTIAN WARS & THE BIRTH OF "CANNONSIDE"

Gottfried’s defining moment came during the Veletzian Wars, where he fought with the unyielding fury of his ancestors. At the Battle of Ant Hill (1959), he earned his infamous moniker, "Cannonside", after surviving a direct cannon shot, a feat that cemented his reputation as a warrior of near-superhuman resilience. Though the blast cost him an arm, he returned with a steel prosthetic, a grim reminder of his brush with death.   That same year, he wed Lady Ivanovich, binding his house to another noble line. His valor did not go unrecognized, in 1963, he was knighted as a Ritter of the Order of Saint Tylos, joining the ranks of Reinmar’s most honored warriors.

THE BARONY OF FERNWEH & LATER YEARS

With the war’s end and Reinmar’s independence secured, Gottfried turned to stewardship. In 1968, he was granted the Barony of Fernweh, a title long dormant, now revived under his leadership. For six years, he ruled with the same discipline he wielded in battle before abdicating in 1974 to his second son, Nikolaus.

In his twilight years, Gottfried embarked on a pilgrimage, seeking enlightenment in distant lands. He returned as an elder, his body worn but his spirit unbroken, passing peacefully in 1985, leaving behind a legacy of steel, faith, and unshakable resolve.

THE HAY LORD,  NIKOLAUS

Born in 1947, Nikolaus von Kanunsberg was a man of faith before duty. A devout cleric, he rose to become Prelate of Reinmar in 1968, earning the humble nickname “The Hay Lord” for his simple habits despite noble birth. Though second-born, he was thrust into rule in 1974 after his father’s abdication, as his elder brother Adelmar had chosen a soldier’s life. Reluctantly, Nikolaus became Duke of Kanunsberg and Baron of Fernweh, ruling with piety, discipline, and restraint.

He never married, holding to his monastic vows. His titles passed to his nephew Theodemar, preserving the line through faith and family.

THE LIONESS, SHIELDMAIDEN ISOLDE
Isolde Sturmweber lived as a warrior and hirdwoman, bound by oath and heart to the tribe, the spear, and the Chieftess Adalfriede. With the matter of heirship yet unsettled, she was promised in betrothal to Adelmar von Kanunsberg. Having fought in the Covenant War and the Frankish Campaign, she was named Löwin, the Lioness, by Chieftess Adalfriede herself, and rose to the rank of Hauptmann within the Host of St. Johann.

In her later years, she met her end with sword in hand, falling in defence of Kretzen at the hands of a northern raider-lord.

THE STEADFAST, PETRAN STAR,  THEODEMAR

Born to Adelmar and the famed Isolde von Sturmweber in 1973, Theodemar von Kanunsberg spent much of his early years embroiled in books and learnings of the monks. His absence was similar to that of Gottfried, returning in the year 2006 and quickly joining the ranks of the Order of Saint Tylos as a Ritter and later the Host of Saint Johann as its Hauptmann. He embodied the principles of House von Kanunsberg, following the faith in ernest, defending his fellow Waldenian brethren in Petra and serving his Chief and tribe faithfully until his abdication to his son Martin von Kanunsberg in the year 2025, who serves as its present patriarch at the time of writing. 

GAUNTLET OF THE CANNONSIDE

Forged in the crucible of war and sanctified by sacrifice, the Cannonside Gauntlet stands as the most sacred relic of House von Kanunsberg. Its origins trace back to the Siege of Stassion in 1959 F.A., when Gottfried Barclay, second son of Saint Caius Primus, stood defiant against the artillery batteries of Veletz. A direct cannon strike tore away his right arm, yet even as he fell, his bloodied fingers clutched the soil of Stassion, a moment immortalized in the ballad; "BRAVEST COVENANT WARRIOR - A TRAGIC DEATH" by the Dwarven Grand King, Sigrun Stonehammer.

The gauntlet was crafted by none other than Sir Peter Stroheim in 1959, a legendary Templar, master smith, and King-Consort of Numendil, a man of many arts and skills it is said that he labored for forty days and nights in the forges of Kanunsberg, tempering the steel with melted cannonballs from Stassion and quenching it in blessed oil from the Cathedral.

WILL OF THE KANUN

† To never refuse a challenge from an equal †

The mace that would become the Will of the Kanun first came to Reinmar through an exchange between Danzen Ugokoyama, a master Oyashiman smith, and Yvian Galken, a retired knight who had claimed two boomsteel blades in his raiding days. The trade was simple–steel for steel–but the weapon’s journey had only just begun.

When Gottfried von Kanunsberg was still a young man, Yvian, now an aging warrior, passed the mace to him as a token of respect. It was a practical weapon then, unadorned but well-balanced, serving Gottfried faithfully through battles and skirmishes. Upon his death, it went to his son Nikolaus, the Hay Lord, who carried it more as a symbol of office than a tool of war.

But it was Theodemar, Nikolaus’ successor, who truly transformed it. Seeking to honor his house’s legacy, he returned to Oyashima and commissioned the smith Oro Kato–a disciple of their master forgers–to reforge the mace into something greater. Under the Kato’s hammer, the steel was gilded, its flanges etched with the laws of the Kanun, and its haft wrapped in the leather of a Reinmaren war banner. What had once been a simple weapon became the Will of the Kanun–a heraldic symbol of justice, wielded by the dukes of Kanunsberg ever since.

Members of the esteemed House Kanunsberg are nurtured within the embrace of the Faith of Canondom, steeped in its rich traditions and teachings from an early age. As children, they have lessons through the sacred scriptures, absorbing the profound values that weave the fabric of their belief. This rite of passage culminates in a momentous occasion, where, at the end of their rigorous studies, they stand before their venerable Patriarch. They are to convey their insights, sharing the depth of understanding they have cultivated in the luminous teachings of Canondom.

PENANCE VIA FAITH AND TRIBE

† To keep faith †

The House of Kanunsberg has a long history of piety and honor. Anyone who disrespects these values must report to their Bishop and Prince to receive penance from them. As such it would be no unusual sight for a Kanunsberg to set out on pilgrimage around the continent as a way of rediscovering their lost values and closeness to Gott through visits to various holy sites and temples. 

While upon Penance and during its duration the von Kanunsberg is to wear all black to show the stain that they have committed, they are not to show the colours of their house or of Reinmar.

HONOUR

† To live by honour and for glory †

A quote from the Vander code, a chivalrous code held in high regard among those of Reinmar, including the Dukal House Kanunsberg.

Similarly to the sacred scriptures of Canondom, the importance of Honour among other values is something that children of the noble house are taught at a young age. Upholding the honour of oneself, von Kanunsberg, and the greater tribe of Reinmar is considered the duty of any who bear the stars or Fernweh, and to taint it is considered a great offence for which one must seek secular penance, issued by the Duke of Kanunsberg. Should the Duke fail to uphold honour, he is to seek out the Prince of Reinmar or tribal council for guidance on restoring such.

Greater violations of this may result in a tribesman’s temporary or permanent expulsion from the noble house through a writ of disinheritance.

CHIVALRY

† To serve the liege lord in valour and faith †

Though not strictly required, those of House Kanunsberg, especially men, are expected to pursue knighthood within a Waldenian Order such as the Order of Saint Tylos or the Order of the Knights of Vander. Alternatively, they may pursue faith by undertaking the cloth.

THE THREE WISDOMS

House von Kanunsberg has three renowned wisdoms which it bestows upon its scions and those of its tribe;

☩ Viel feind, viel ehr  -  Many foes, much honor ☩

Coined by the progenitor of the house, Gottfried, the words have a dual-saying. The more dangerous a challenge or task to face is, the more respect, honor, reward and admiration will receive the respective person afterwards, having been successful.

Likewise it means that if someone has made a lot of enemies, that means they did not care much about whether others like him or feel offended because to him it is more important, to tell his truth and be true to himself than to be everyone's darling.

☩ GOTT MIT UNS  -  GOD IS WITH US ☩

These words are a declaration that the bearer walks with the blessing of GOD, that their cause is just, and that their actions, be they in war, judgement, or law, are sanctioned by the divine. It is both a reminder and a warning: a reminder to the scions of the house to act with righteousness and unwavering faith, and a warning to their foes that to oppose them is to oppose providence itself.

☩ Wer Rastet, Der Rostet  -  He who rests, rusts ☩

A proverb rooted in the martial and industrious spirit of the Reinmaren people, these words serve as a creed of discipline and ceaseless effort. It teaches that idleness is the enemy of greatness, just as a blade left unused will corrode, so too does the body, mind, and soul decay when left stagnant. Whether in matters of swordplay, statecraft, or spiritual refinement, rest is seen not as peace, but as the slow death of potential. 

Originally devout Sigismundites, House Kanunsberg has since converted to Owynism, similarly to the grander tribe of Reinmar. This shift in beliefs is reflected in the passing rites of the Ducal House, with deceased members usually being entombed in traditional ways, only to be burnt right before the coffin is shut and buried beneath the ground, their ashes destined to nurture the earth whilst the soul ascends into the seven skies.

The Trial of Eagles is the sacred rite by which scions of House von Kanunsberg come of age and earn the right to bear the sigil of the Eagle and the Star. It is not a singular test, but a threefold pilgrimage, spiritual, martial, and moral, intended to temper the body, soul, and spirit. Upon reaching their sixteenth year, each aspirant is sent forth alone, with neither retinue nor title, to complete three great tasks:

The First Wing is a pilgrimage to a holy site, where the aspirant must meditate and receive confession, symbolizing their submission to the Creator’s will and reaffirming their bond to the Faith.

The Second Wing is a trial of arms, in which they must defeat a foe of equal skill, be it a duel, a hunt of a deadly beast, or a test of endurance in service of their liege. It is through blood and grit that they prove their worth as warriors of Reinmar.

The Third Wing is a deed of judgment, in which the aspirant must mediate a dispute, right a wrong, or perform an act of mercy or justice, judged by their Duke or a tribal elder. It is through wisdom that they prove themselves not only strong, but righteous.

Should they succeed, they are welcomed back under moonlight and oath, draped in a white cloak bearing the black eagle, and dubbed a full member of the House, an Eagle of Kanunsberg, ready to soar. Failure does not mean shame, but reflection and the call to return again once strength, humility, or clarity have been gained.

To refresh the minds of those who had missed it, the Drunken Maiden tavern was drank dry of it’s Reinmaren Ale supply! Though we do provide the ale of outlanders, not having our own ale brings a tear to a grown man’s eye! And so, we hosted a competition - the family whom brews the best Ale shall be awarded 50 mina and be the primary source of ale for Reinmar til his alcohol runs dry as well!

THIRD PLACE, was taken by Tribe Weisenstein whom submitted Weisenstein Braune Ale. The Weisensteins went for a more malty, nutty - even chocolatey flavour for their ale. The judges' average of rating was a 4.6 out of 10

SECOND PLACE, was given to the Princely family Barclay whom submitted The Chieftan’s Ale. The Barclays appeared to go for a more hearty and basic ale. The Judges’ average of rating was a 6.7 out of 10

FIRST PLACE, was earned by the Stroheim tribe who submitted Stroheim Ale. They went for a more high-alcohol value, one to surely get you tipsy with ease! They were given an overall average of 7.3 out of 10 by the judges.

AS per the resignation of Varik von Wesenburg from the position of the Herrenmeister, and the disbandment and reformation of the Host of Saint Johann and Order of Saint Tylos respectively, it is high time for the mantle to be passed on.

Our kinsman and Bailiff, Johann von Weisenstein has proven himself worthy to our tribe and its Chieftan, through service as Lieutenant and Hauptmann within the Host of Saint Johann, to his countless experiences leading in the Host on the field of battle.
