THE INTERACTIVE CARD GAME

A handbook made by Lady Charlotte Rosamund Helmvets
6th of Snow’s Maiden 1794

A new Kaedreni pastime came to be within the walls of Owynsburg. Invented by Leufroy d’Amaury, in 1793, a young adolescent with a taste for gambling, it was quickly popularized within the Rhoswenii echelon and Imperial citizens in Kaedrin. Due to popular demand, I write this handbook for the newer players: a compact guide to the rules of this nerve-racking game! 

I). PLAYERS
Mina or Die can be played by two players or more. It is primarily played in taverns, but the maker of Mina or Die also suggests that you play with larger crowds: such as during festivals, dinner events, or family gatherings. 

II). TIME
Depending on the number of players, a game of Mina or Die could take upwards to one Saint Minute, but lasts approximately Five Saint Minutes.

III). CARDS
The game features 20 cards that display notable figures from the Holy Orenian Empire. However, one of these cards is called the Reiver Card, and displays a Reiver wearing a blue bandana, wielding a sword: if you pull this card, you lose.

The variation in the other cards are for primarily aesthetic purposes.

IV). THE GAME

-I). The first player is whoever is the eldest among the players. 

-II). He pulls a card from a shuffled deck of Mina or Die cards.

-II.I.). Does the first player pull the Reiver card immediately?
He loses and must pay his payout to everyone. 

-II.II.). Does the first player pull any other card? 
The person to his right may pull a card. 

-II.III). Does another player pull the Reiver Card?
The round is over, that person loses, and he must pay his payout to everyone.

-III). If everyone pulled a card, but nobody pulled the Reiver, then the round ends, and the stakes get doubled. This process repeats every round where the Reiver is not drawn, until the card is drawn. 

-IV). The original payout for the starting round is 25 Mina, but can be different depending on the thrill and stakes the participant seeks. 

IV). MINA SYSTEM 
Every participant must pay their stake, which traditionally is 25 Mina. If that participant loses, he must split his stake between the participants. If nobody loses within the round, and the stake gets doubled to 50 Mina, he must split 50 Mina amongst the other participants.

OOC MECHANICS:
 

The first player rolls 100. 

If the first player gets 95/100, the second player does /roll 95. 

The second player gets 45, the third player does /roll 45.

Third player gets 6, fourth player does /roll 6. 

When a player rolls 1, he drew the Reiver card, and thus loses. 

If there are four players playing the game, and none of the four pulled the Reiver card.

All stakes double. 

Repeat.

KIDNAPPING OF ROBERT FOLTEST

An arrow would pierce through Adrian Helvet’s mare, toppling the Helvetii as Isabel Franziska gallops away from the group. Then, another arrow would find its way to Ailred Barclay’s stomach: he too now collapsing to the ground. As Charlotte dragged herself over the floor to reach her weeping husband, the young Robert, firstborn of Adrian, would cry and freeze in confusion. 

As Cyril Halcourt would help the wounded Ailred back onto his feet, as Charlotte dragged her weak husband from the ground: Robert would rush towards the back of the altar, hiding there. A ghastly, knightly creature would stand on top of the hill: looking down upon them while holding a grotesque blade. 

Before the group could articulate a response, the creature would launch himself forwards: his large blade lunging towards Cyril & Adrian, who stood beside each other. But then, nothing happened, and suddenly the creature stopped. Adrian summoned his rapier as he turned to Ailred “Perhaps we.. Can we fight it?”. His reluctant question was answered by a stressed laugh “I don’t think so, governor.”

Two inferni would suddenly appear from behind the creature, flying over the group to reach for Robert Foltest. As the little child whimpered, the Inferni grabbed him by his clothes: lifting him up in the air. Despite the screams from the group, who sprinted towards them in an futile attempt to intervene, the boy was taken into the night sky.

This missive is sent with the greatest sense of urgency by the Household of Helvets and the Government of Owynsburg. A citizen of the Empire, Robert Foltest Helvets, has been kidnapped in the outskirts of Kaedrin.

EXPECTATIONS

Alexander sighed as he looked at the moon before him, his companion along his side. Heinrich had joined him out of worry, even though he wasn’t acquainted with the teenage Viscount that well. If a man asked for his companionship with that expression, and that late, it would be inhuman for him to reject a fellow man. 

Standing at the edge of Mont Catherine together, Heinrich patiently waited for Alexander to start talking. “This is where papa was buried.” he suddenly began, pointing at the carving of ‘F.L.’, referencing Frederick Leopold. “I..” he lowered his head “I haven’t visited him here since the burial”. 

Heinrich nodded quietly, clasping his hands behind his back. “Why is that, Alex?” he then inquired, turning to the Viscount. “I promised him that I’ll walk in his footsteps on his deathbed: that I’ll make him proud. It just took so long to fulfill that promise..” Heinrich chuckled “And now you fulfilled that promise?”, to which Alexander nodded. 

“I became a prosecutor today, in Helena.” he would crouch, placing his hand on the tree “He wanted to be that, but he got whisked into a Ministry job in Kaedrin. I hope he didn’t regret that.”  Heinrich shrugged “He was never a hostage: if he wanted to pursue his legal career, he always could’ve. But it’s wholesome that you are walking the path he couldn’t, to say the least.”

Alexander nodded as he looked down on Victoria, Juliana & Charlotte: the women unwilling to climb the mountain in their pompous dresses. “We share a fate, Blowitz.” Alexander would stand up, his gaze locked onto the women below “Both our houses have been struck by so much tragedy: so much sorrow.” Heinrich nodded carefully, noticing he dealt with his house history much differently “I suppose so. It is us that need to secure its future, however. I don’t see the productivity in wallowing about has-beens and happenings.”

The young Viscount would chuckle, perking a brow as he now finally faced Heinrich “My father was psychologically murdered, Blowitz. So many people demanded so much: it breaks my heart remembering his empty face, his deep sighs.. His child, my brother, died shortly after. If I fall and break my neck right here, his line ends. His whole reason to exist, his entire fight, reduced to nothing.” Heinrich took a step back, hoping it wouldn’t get too heated. Alexander crossed his arms as he pouted “While my uncle plays Cardinal god knows where, and my sister prefers to be Lady Helvets above anything else. A shame really.”

He beckons Heinrich to follow as he walks away from Frederick Leopold’s grave “It is time to end this era of tragedy for us. I will have a good talk with my sister.” Heinrich nodded, looking at the grave, and then to Alexander, as he started to follow suit. He still didn’t understand why he had to come along: but it was obvious that the Viscount needed a figure to rant at. 

On the year of our Lord, 1790, 

A wedding had occurred, one nondescript Summer’s eve. As the verdant fields enveloped  the perimeter of Mont Saint Catherine and her subsiding, dear Owynsburg, Rhoswenii, wigged fellows, and Harrenites of Kaedrini heritage bustled into vicinage of the Priory Saint Robert, their laughter and discourse echoing merrily - bouncing from man to man as though it was angelic contagion. 

With immediacy, the dapper and fashionable Viscount of Albarosa, Frederick Ermingard, ascended the paved slope, the wealthy recluse greeting passerbies with cordiality. At his flank loomed his sister, Charlotte of Albarosa, First Lady of the Commonwealth, garbed in Helvetii garments. Her visage lacked the mirth that came with fellow countryfolk, subdued by her apprehension of the locale. At once, awash was the collective with solemnity, spurred by the Pontifical party, invited by the bridegroom’s own uncle, the former Prince-Archbishop and Monsignor Laurence August. Making low obeisance to the Vicar, who spouted benedictions unto the congregants with sage warmness, the Pruvians and their esteemed guests soon therein entered the sanctified Chapel and took their seats.

Elsewhere, within the Varoche, the young bachelorette and betrothed of Frederick, Margaret von Tiber, was in the midst of preparations, donning an ashen dress of satine and a floral wreath that shrouded her rosen-haired head elegantly. The young lady chirped elatedly among her attendants. To the youngest maiden in those ranks was afforded a lilac flower stem by the bride, doused in whimsical and pleasant perfumery. 

“You will bloom as I have, verily, and fulfill your duty of matrimony with steadfast vigor and forevermore be in pious society and GOD’s favor,” foretold Margaret, caressing the youth’s visage warmly. With a resolute nod, the blushing lady gathered her skirts and waltzed onward, the bridal party in tow.

Music resonated whimsically within the imposing halls of Owynsburg’s Basilica, soft melodies lulling the ears of their attendants into pleasant reverie. It would not be long until the oaken doors once again were thrust open, revealing now the bride - mirroring the Albarosan Viscount who loomed across the hall. At once, the jovial elder clad in papal gowns beckoned the congregants to rise, their gestures of reverence accompanied by the Lady Margaret’s matrimonial promenade.

With the music dwindling in its fervor and amplitude, conjugal vows were exchanged and their wedlock, confirmed and anointed by His Holiness, was sealed by ceremonial kiss.

KAEDRIN’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HOLY ORENIAN EMPIRE

TITLE I. FROM THE TOME OF KAEDRIN

PREAMBLE

Kaedrin underwent many forms and styles throughout its entire existence: an inherent privilege to one of the Empire’s most ancient of vassals.  From its militaristic foundation under Peter Chivay, to its modernization under Richard de Reden, a single jewel of Kaedrin’s crown outshone that of its now derelict contemporaries. Where once proud vassals such as Lorraine and Savoy lay buried in the annals of history, Kaedrin still exists and develops with nearly no interruption.

That matter of fact can chiefly be attributed to its harmonious relationship with the Empire: built upon the foundation of two crowns in union, ever since the ascension of the late Chivay to the throne of Oren. From there the relationship changed formally, but never substantially. Patriotism to Kaedrin remained synonymous with patriotism to Oren, as it remained the home of many titans of Oren’s history who led our Empire forward to glory.

To profoundly understand the Kaedreni, to then finally be able to document its vast history and culture, we must first and foremost identify and dissect the unique relationship between Kaedrin and its sovereign. Therefore, the first title of the future Tome of Kaedrin shall be dedicated to this phenomenon. 

THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL

The statecraft of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin had always been a dubious and complicated affair: transitioning from a military junta, to a monarchy, to a republic, to a monarchy, to a personal union and to finally reach direct integration under Her Imperial Majesty’s crown. 

In between these transitions, one consistency remained most of the time: the presence of a Governor-General, an Imperial representative who managed the Commonwealth’s affairs on behalf of the reigning sovereign at the time. Historically these Governor-Generals were local Kaedreni, who were entrusted by the central government to maintain the devolved form of governance that existed in the Commonwealth.

While the Governor-General had legal executive power over all affairs within the Commonwealth, not all had used it to a similar degree. Richard de Reden was notoriously authoritarian and managed many affairs of state by himself, whereas Henry Frederick Helvets delegated his portfolio almost entirely to the local government organs of Kaedrin. What mattered to the Imperial Crown was not the execution of the role of Governor-General, but moreso the continued stability and harmony of the Kaedreni-Orenian relationship.

The necessity of a figurehead that was a local Kaedreni and a trusted member of the Imperial Crown’s government remained enshrined in Kaedrin’s successive constitutions: as neither Kaedrin nor the Empire wishes to abolish the underlying framework of their relationship. The Governor-General furthermore could mediate the disputes that the local government could have with its sovereign: pushing both parties to dialogue instead of hostile diplomacy. 

A fair observation could be made that the Governor-General is the reason why inter-Imperial disputes did not escalate to the degree it had with former subjects such as Savoy, Lorraine and Hanseti-Ruska: instead of dealing with lesser sovereigns, they were depending on a representative of their own. This only was possible due to established responsibilities, and the existence itself, of the Governor-General.

THE FUNCTIONAL COMPROMISE

The Commonwealth of Kaedrin had historically aligned itself with the Holy Orenian Empire more intimately than its contemporary Imperial subjects. It stands as the only vassal in modern Imperial history that voluntarily abolished its own military, and to further its Imperial integration after the succession crisis of Her Imperial Majesty Anne. 

External critics and radical elements would often ridicule Kaedrin for its unwavering loyalty to the Empire, as much as the extremists would point at Kaedrin’s individual power and question its path to integration. Both parties refuse to understand the truth behind the historical functionality of Kaedrin in the Empire, embodied by an unwritten and de facto compromise.

The Imperial Crown could, legally, actively manage Kaedrin from its central government. It could, hypothetically, appoint a Governor-General that is neither Rhoswenii nor aligned with Kaedrin. In return Kaedrin could abuse its intimate relationships within the Imperial framework, and much like Hanseti-Ruska before them, actively sabotage its institutions. Neither parties opt to do so.

This refusal to abuse the exposure of each other’s internal workings comes not from perverse dynamics such as mutually assured destruction or codependency: it comes from a deeply interwoven patriotism that understands that mankind must unite under an Imperial Crown, but that the Imperial Crown cannot eternally govern all directly. Because Kaedrin is loyal and reliable, it can exist with more autonomy and liberties than any subject around it. It motivates the sovereign to continue its delegated privileges, as much as it motivates the Kaedreni to continue its loyal and productive existence within the Empire. This mutual understanding is coined as ‘The Functional Compromise’.

It is inevitable to any relationship that threats to its existence occur from time to time. When extremist elements enter the halls of Kaedreni power, or when the Imperial bureaucracy fails to properly represent Kaedreni interests: the question arises whether the functional compromise can continue to exist. History has proven that the answer to this question is a simple yes. 

The interests of both parties to ensure the continued existence of a loyal subject, to maintain its status quo and to guarantee continued harmony during the growth of both: consistently transcended the more selfish interests oriented around might.

THE RELATIONSHIP ANNO 1788

The Commonwealth of Kaedrin had abolished its monarchy during the House of Electors convention of 1786. The electors unanimously voted to alter the old Constitution prohibiting Her Imperial Majesty Anne ‘I’ from succeeding the throne of her predecessor, Peter III of Kaedrin. 

Fatigued by the ancient notions of monarchy, and captivated by the modernesque governmental reforms of the central government, the at the time Lieutenant Governor Richard V. Helvets pushed for a more modern form of statecraft for the olde Commonwealth. By abolishing the Monarchy and rendering it a direct constituent and subject under Her Imperial Majesty, the Kaedreni liberated themselves legally to architect a new government for a new Commonwealth. This also avoided any future constitutional issues in regards to Imperial succession, or its integration into the Empire. 

Thus, the Commonwealth of Kaedrin exists as a direct province under the Imperial Crown: enjoying vast levels of autonomy and privileges to govern and maintain itself. Beneath that foundation of statecraft also lies a degree of cross-cultural integration: as former Helenite houses such as Pruvia-Albarosa venture into Kaedrin, and Kaedreni houses such as Dubois seek fortune in Helena. Both contribute to the cultural harmonization between the two, and guarantee the presence of familiar faces on both sides of the aisle. 

Kaedrin in that sense is the only entity that can have a profoundly distinct history and culture, while simultaneously being perfectly aligned in the mosaic of the Imperial human. An Oren without Kaedrin, wouldn’t be the same Oren: as much as Kaedrin without Oren, would simply not be Kaedrin. Simply put, it means that Kaedrin is inherently Orenian while boasting a culture that is identifiable as ‘Kaedreni’. He who is Kaedreni would be from Oren first and foremost, but pride itself with its Kaedreni heritage secondly. With all the victories and despite all the headaches that stem from a symbiotic relationship like this, Kaedrin can pride itself as the model province of Oren for the past few centuries. 

[!] AUTHOR’S NOTE

The Crown of Roses is a Kaedreni term for the Imperial Crown, one that is portrayed with multiple roses: each representing a subject that forms the Holy Orenian Empire. Historically this would be a dark yellow Rose for Hanseti-Ruska, a red Rose for Savoy, a light yellow rose for Lorraine and the white Rose for Kaedrin.

The constantly changing make-up of the Empire and the stigmatization behind the history of the now derelict Imperial Subjects prompted this term, and its depictions, to go out of fashion.

The Empire has stood strong for years. We constantly exude excellence, and have been a symbol of a strong nation. We see this as something to celebrate, and a festival is to be held in the Novellen Palace. Not only are we celebrating the greatness of the empire, but we are also celebrating the alliance between The Holy Orenian Empire and the Silver State of Haelun’or. There will be many festivities and everyone is urged to attend and support the empire. There will be a classic tournament of strength where men and women of the empire can fight, in good fun, for a prize of 2k mina. Several years ago, I was elected Mayor of this city by virtue of the people’s mandate. I must confess there is not much for me to boast about, as there hasn’t been much for me to administer. I have made attempts at revitalizing our beloved city in the ways with which I am learned and most familiar; through faith. At first, my method did not prove fruitful, and I, therefore, came to the conclusion a change in myself and my conduct was in order. I have since found success and in my efforts and restored a margin of life back to our city.  The founding of the Priory of Saint Robert and the Order of Saint Robert, centers of work, worship, prayer and opportunity, have with them breathed to our Commonwealth a cultural resurgence and an unexpected wave of immigration. In this occasion, I would like to welcome both the pious and the diligent, who in seeking opportunity found a new home as our compatriots.

I have therefore decided to hold a second open forum, the first of which I summoned at the beginning of my mayoral term. I shall briefly explain what the open forum is; an assembly wherein all Kaedreni citizens, man and woman, may come and speak their mind freely on the ongoings of Kaedrin, an occasion where one may come forth to petition our community and government both, and then together in our assembly, we can find a solution.

The forum shall be held in a Saint’s day at the House of Commons in Owynsburg. It is past the coffeehouse from the city’s western gate.

THE  INVENTION STORY

A fatigued Prince-Archbishop was once sat amongst his many female servants, their endless babbling and touching tiring for the ageing man. The mere thought of finishing his first Homily of Albarosa rendered him nervous: eyes blurry, motor skills fading, a body ready for bed.

Unbeknownst to him, right beneath his window in the Pruvian Estate, a doctor and farmer were arguing.

“So you just burn these leaves?” Lemuel would inquire, his chin raised in agony.

The farmer nodded nervously “Aye, these plants are but a pest for our crop.”

The pest mentioned was the Albarose, a plant native to Kaedrin: named by Richard Helvets in jest, as it was but a weed pestering the agrarian city. The Albarose’s leaf was potent however, filled with a white goo that had unintentional chemical consequences. That day Lemuel, perhaps out of boredom or curiosity, demanded the sack of weeds from the farmer: determined to arbitrarily research the common plant.

And so while the Prince-Archbishop slept on the floor, Dr. Lemuel examined the goo in his basement laboratory. Explosion here, suffocating gas there: the weed’s intestines proved hard to master. But there came his eureka moment! As the goo dried up on his table, its exterior became almost sugar-like. As a worried servant opened the door: a handful of grains found their way to the doctor’s airways. Understanding what happened, he leaned forward to consume some more. 

The next day he presented it to the Prince-Archbishop, who then could finish his Homily without sleep for two days straight. He suggested it to His Holiness. Then came the cardinals, the House of Pruvia-Albarosa, Helvets and Armas. A trail of white powder leading from Owynsburg to the busy bureaucratic machines of Helena. The rest is history.

Albarosan Powder is an exclusive product only sold or gifted to those acquainted with the Rhoswenii houses or the Holy Canonist Church. It is not sold in a store, and therefore, requires you to seek out current consumers. 

The market price for Albarosan Powder varies between 45 minas and 250 minas, depending on your relationship with the vendor and the intensity of the batch. The intensity is examined by the producers themselves, who take a spoonful before sealing it in the Albarosan Powder packages. If there is no seal of the Pruvian Griffin onto the package, it means that the produce is either old or fabricated!

His Holiness the High Pontiff James II

His Holiness James II officiates the wedding of Adrian & Charlotte, 1785.

Adrian Otho Helvets stood at the edge of Varoche palace, watching his courier sprint down the stone steps towards the fields. With him was a single note, carefully written on the finest of Helvetti paper. Its destination? The Pruvian estate across the agrarian landscape, its contours looming in an inviting fashion. Once arrived, the letter would read to the recipient:

“O’ my love is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in my lacune

O’ my love is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune. 

So fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep i love am I:

And I will love thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas go dry.

Till a’ the seas go dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun;

And I will love thee still, my dear,

While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee well awhile!

And I will come again, my love.

Though it were ten thousand miles”

This recipient was none other than Charlotte Rosamund Pruvia-Albarosa, also known as ‘the Rose of Kaedrin’. They had met only shortly after the passing of His Imperial Majesty, sipping tea in the Novellen gardens as barely acquainted Rhoswenii peers. Perhaps it was the loud patriotism of Charlotte, the obnoxious smirk of Adrian, her tender grasp or his groovy moves: something simply had clicked for the two, and neither could forget the other. 

Sleepless nights, discreet doves, arbitrary questions. “Are your walls green?” her tiny note would inquire. “Did you hunt pheasants yet?” he would ask in return. “Does your father snore?” “Did you ever go to Korvassa?” “Did the Haeseni smell?” “How do you know my father?”.  Unspoken passions, forbidden lust, couriers delivering in secrecy. “Ohh Adrian, I told you I disliked bordeaux. The horror of your misjudgment.” “Apologies my dear, but I already possess a royal scrivener pen.” “Can you gift me something less heavy next time?” Suspecting parents, depleting bank accounts, singing while getting dressed. “He’s a Helvets, dear mother.” “Father, I am not entertaining any lass at the moment!” “A Countess? Ohh my beloved mother, it is not about this!.” “Actually father I do possess the characteristic of a monk, if I say so myself.” Exposed secrets, gossip in the city, eyes that see everything. “I am meeting his father tonight.” “Forgive my deception father, for I do love someone.”  Reluctant handshakes, strange faces in the palace, an exchange of expensive gifts. “He says that His Holiness himself will oversee the ceremony!” “Father, tell that Amadeus to contact mister Virosi post haste!” Back and forths, rose petals on the carpet, exciting damsels but nervous dame. 

His Holiness spoke: “Do you take Charlotte Rosamund of House Pruvia-Albarosa, as your lawfully wedded wife-“  he replied “I, Adrian Othodoric of House Helvets, do.”

As they stood across each other, each memory seemed so faint and irrelevant. With trembling hands and intense focus on the rings, a century of emotion would pass in mere minutes. Two lovebirds from cushioned origins, with minds that often go astray. An unique understanding that cannot be translated to others, something that you can share with none. The epitome of a married couple, prepared to age and wither alongside one another: so that their souls exist in proximity for eternity. 

Consecration of A New Cathedral

More than a decade ago the city of Owynsburg was expanded greatly and new housing and businesses were made available to all. With this expansion followed a humble chapel, which was given the fitting name: The Chapel of Exalted Owyn. After the disappearance of our previous Bishop Erasmus von Gertreide, there was a sudden void left in the  hierarchy of the diocese. The only remaining priest was quickly elevated by the High Pontiff to replace the lost Bishop.

With this elevation, it has allowed many new things to happen in Kaedrin. For example, a new monastery has been made with a library and a clinic. The most notable within the city is that Bishop Soissons has elected to move the Cathedra of Ves into the chapel, elevating the chapel to a Cathedral. The entire cathedral has been refitted, elongated and widened to make the church larger and more presentable for the seat of a Bishop.

In honour of this event, the Cathedral of Exalted Owyn shall be re-consecrated, making it fit for worship. Any who wish to witness this event shall meet at the door of the Cathedral, where the service will begin. It will later move into the Cathedral, where all may see it in its splendor.

Let this also be an opportunity for all who are interested to serve the Church, to step forwards.. Those who have secular professions outside of the Church and do not wish to abandon their job, wife and children may seek to become permanent deacons after a time of study. Permanent deacons are ordained, but are not permitted to do the same sacraments as a priest.

Born as the youngest sibling among four, the young Pruvian had spent most of his youth sidelined from the discussions and schemes that his relatives endeavored on. Looking up to prominents such as political mastermind John Everard, former mayor Philip Louis and Prince-Archbishop Laurence August; he too declared himself an unlikely candidate to ascend into relevancy on the political scene. 

Instead, Frederick Leopold pursued a scholarly life: chronicling the expansive history of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin alongside his job as aide in the Kaedreni House of Commons. His diligence soon brought him to a Cabinet position under the Governorship of Richard Helvets, where he now stood equal to his elder peers. His contribution to the governance of Richard was remarkable: advising a variety of officials towards successful mediation of conflicts, completion of projects and various enterprises. Among them stands most prominently his role as bridge between the extremist elements of the Rhoswenii electorate and the Josephite clique of Helena: serving as a reminder to the latter that there is more to his folk than staunch conservatism and crown absolutism.

When the ‘Mad Princess’ of Pruvia, a nickname given by his brothers, was discovered to illegitimately possess the princess title: a squabble ensued that eventually resulted into ‘the Pruvia Split’, architected by Sir Frederick Armas.  The newfound Pruvia-Albarosa were given a Viscounty in the Commonwealth of Kaedrin, which was originally intended for his elder brother Laurence August. When Laurence refused to seek defrocking from his ecclesiastical vows, the only viable Rhoswenii to inherit was Frederick. Unexpectedly, he became the first Viscount of Albarosa.

Relatively unknown outside of the Commonwealth, Frederick had to rely on his relatives to gain a seat at the table in certain circles. This was no problem for the silent intellectual: who masterfully delegated his kin to run affairs on his behalf. It rendered him almost elusive in Kaedrin: a man with an abundance of control, but who never had the need to exert it. This endeared the O’Rourkes and Helvets who, despite being in competition with Pruvia-Albarosa, felt a relaxed and cooperative atmosphere wherever Frederick formally reigned. On top of that the Viscount adhered strictly to legalistic and Veszian values: never breaking protocol while taking into account individual expectations and habits. This led to him becoming the informal representative of the family within Kaedrin, transcending all of his siblings despite their greater fame or infamy. 

Unfortunately this golden age ended for the Viscount rather abruptly. The disappearance of Laurence caused his affairs and associates to be transferred to Frederick, who had to suddenly represent the family in various clerical and political schemes. Despite being principally opposed, Frederick attempted to maintain the status quo in absence of its architect. He would’ve been able to, if it weren’t for the growing chaos within his family. Similarly to the pre-Pruvian split era, those in Helena felt agitated by the family refusing to look outwards from Kaedrin. Blaming the Viscount for their feeling of disenfranchisement, they began to kowtow to other opposing factions in spite. 

Seeing himself increasingly embattled by smears from his Pruvia-Provins peers, discontent amongst his Helena relatives and inability to sustain the workload from family and state: Frederick sought a vacation on the seas to temporarily escape from a situation that in his eyes, was escalating beyond his control. His temporary vacation unfortunately became permanent when he never returned from sea, being declared dead after finding no sign of his ship nor crew for months. 

Although a tragic end, friend and foe alike recognize the inspiring diligence of Frederick Leopold. A man that never asked nor sought after the duties entrusted to him, but who gave his all to fulfill them despite it. A victim of an elaborate besiegement to his reputation and honour, who sacrificed any chance of fame for his sense of loyalty to his kin and to his nation. Let the first annal be dedicated to this hero, who represents every father figure and architect that commits to his purpose despite external pressures. Who has put piety and duty above fame and wealth. This is why he is declared in the annals of history as Frederick the Steadfast. May this exemplar Rhoswenii serve as an example for many generations past his lifetime.

St. Edmond’s Tourney and Festival

1780

In these exceptional and calamitous times, we must forward to train both our vigour and readiness to ultimately prevail in this hour of tribulation. To not only prove but to assure our time-tested prowess in the field of combat and our ability to remain unwavering, we stand as the oldest civilisation known to man, we had best not suffer defeat now. Though bare in mind that Intrepidity is not the sole purpose of this fete but also Revelry, and so-forth despite the ongoing tournament a festival of sorts will remain available, for those looking to carouse and so on.

Due to the success in vending and drawing attention in the festival prior to this one, the same opportunities will be offered as they were before. So once again, those managing the festival and tournament will be issuing stalls to those interested in vending their goods, running games and whatever they please so long as it suits. These stalls will be free of charge, provided that the stall owners provide something of interest for the fete.

This particular fete shall be celebrated in the name of St. Edmond of Lachsin, the patron saint of knights. St. Edmond was a landed knight in the kingdom of Kaedrin and possessed all the ideal virtues of a knight. Most notable of these virtues was his mercy, coming even before his valour on the battlefield. As the threat of demons in the realm continues, knights should continue to follow the example of St. Edmond and show valour on the field against these invaders.

Thus, the Governance of Kaedrin extends formal invitations to all of those who reside within the Empire with a particular emphasis and request for those putting their lives on the line in the current jeopardy; those being part of a military or a knightly order. That being said, the foremost events being that of the various contests will be taking place in the break of the day on the Sun’s Smile of 1783.

The Single Melee:

Two combatants armed with blunted weapons shall face off in an arena constructed on the day, fighting until one man is unable to carry on, or yields to the other. The victor will move on, fighting the winner of the next bout, and so on. As the name of the event suggests, no ranged weapons of any kind, nor magics may be used in any way, shape, or form. Nonetheless, the man or woman who ascends to the peak of the bracket shall walk with their pockets filled with mina.

The victor of the Single Melee will be awarded 2000 mina!

The Team Melee:

Different teams will be formed and thereafter will put each other to a blunted blade in an esteemed contest. Similar to the Single Melee, those who come out triumphant in their matches will rise in the brackets until two teams remain at the very top. The final aspirants will collide in a concluding match to flare their facility in not only individual skill but exhibit their ability to communicate and function as a troupe; a competency desired by most servicemen. Depending on the amount of goers present will warrant how many may fight in each individual team.

The leader of the winning team will be awarded 2000 mina to allot between himself and his teammates.

The Grand Melee:

A test of endurance will be present in the final Melee event, as those willing to throw themselves into the closing fray will be put forward to lock horns with each and every man competing against them in a large-scale free for all skirmish. The last man standing will be suitably awarded, being offered a sum of mina and the homage of those witnessing the spectacle.

The victor of the Grand Melee will be awarded 1500 mina.

Be it a retreat for a retired statesman or a home for a growing family, these structures have proven time and time again that they brighten the hearts of those who inhabit them. The City of Owynsburg

A colorful metropolis awaits those who choose to claim citizenship with the walls of Owynsburg, a melting pot of unique businesses and historical sights! Positions within the city’s tavern and coffeehouse are available to those established in the service business, while roles within the smaller municipal government of the city are sure to attract those who seek greater work and influence but on a smaller scale. The Varoche Palace

For figures seeking to reside within the King’s own court, one might consider taking up residence within the Varoche Palace. A historical landmark of Oren sitting on the shoulder of the mountainside, this palace as served as a residence to two Emperors, the Dukes of Adria and Cathalon, and remains today the primary residence of the House of Helvets. Roles within the royal and ducal households are plentiful, beckoning forth those who wish to rub shoulders with some of the oldest families and lineages in Orenian history. Among the many projects going on within the royal seat are the re-establishment of the King’s court and the creation of a Kaedreni Arcane Order, to serve the populous of both the province and great-Oren in the ongoing struggle against the Inferi Menace. The palace also stands as the official meeting place for the King’s Royal Cabinet, whom govern the Commonwealth on behalf of His Majesty.

Many in Kaedrin often boast about the Commonwealth being the successor of Ves, but I must confess that the common people have little to no power to decide how things are run. I believe this will be the first step, to bring back some of what was good in old Ves and truly make Kaedrin the successor-state it dreams to be.

Confession In Owynsburg

It has been too long since any sort of service has been held in the city of Owynsburg. With the former Chapel of Ex. Owyn, located on Helvets Ave 7, being raised to the status of Cathedral, the building has been made slightly larger and refurbished. As Bishop of Ves, it is high time we return to a time of religious service within the city. The first service in decades shall be a simple confession, long have the citizens of this city gone without a way to repent, this is no more. Confession shall be held in the Cathedral of Ex. Owyn in a Saint’s Day. Everyone is welcome, no one shall be denied entry. If you are unfamiliar with the method of confession, you will be explained the procedure below:

Before even entering confession, you must reflect on your life and search for your sins. Once you enter the confessional, you will sign the Lorraine and say “Bless me, Father for I have sinned. It has been X days/years since my last confession” Then you may begin your confession, declare all your mortal sins in number and kind. Once that has been done you will say “I am sorry for these and all of my sins." After that the celebrant will offer advice and assign a penance. You will say an Act of Contrition, which is a prayer expressiong your sorrow for your sins. Finally the priest as the intermediary will absolve your sins.

Attention all citizens of Kaedrin,

Now that all potential mayoral candidates have presented themselves, it is time for them to share with the citizenry their intentions and plans for their prospective future as Lord Mayor. They will have a full saint’s day to present their written declaration of intent to the public, which should include all ideas pertaining to city planning, taxation, renovation, public works, etc. Failure to do so will result in the candidate’s elimination from the election.

The Royal Cabinet of Kaedrin deems it wise to enact the 4^th Mayoral Election of Owynsburg, so the citizens of our city might elect their municipal representative. 

Once all candidates have submitted themselves for election, a public campaigning rally shall be held so that each individual might present their intentions and intended ideas for Owynsburg to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kaedrin. The final election will be held two day’s hence (Sunday, August 16^th, from 12pm EST – 12am EST).

A Fete of Prosperity

1780

With the recent appointment of Lorena Annabelle and the reforms following in her wake, inevitable prosperity is bound to surface within the confines of Kaedrin. Consequently, after perpetually waiting for years and years, the heart of the Commonwealth being Owynsberg yearns for a festivity. After heeding the advice of its beloved citizens, Superintendent of the Arts George Dubois alongside the rest of the Commonwealth deems it fit to hold a festival like no other, to revel in these times of prosperity. But to also bear in mind the Demon peril, to not forget, but to allow not the menace to topple us down, for our spirit can not and will not ever be tainted,  we will always rise and remain triumphant. For the Commonwealth!

All in the Empire are invited to this day of carousing, taking place on the date of 1780.

In the morn:

Once everybody has rallied for the event, a speech will be given by the Superintendent of the Arts. Then all in attendance will be allowed much of the day to knock a few, or many drinks back and mingle. Being mindful of such, the Commonwealth will be inviting all purveyors and entrepreneurs alike to host their own stalls in the city, vending, auctioning or even hosting games. Said stalls will be free of any charge, the only constraint being that your goods must be deemed worthy and enticing for the public.

At Noon:

It is expected at this point that at least everybody is marginally tipsy, with drunk souls comes young vigour and staggered talent, a spectacle for all to marvel at! A ring will be constructed on the day and when the time comes a boxing tournament shall be held, with a considerable prize of 3000 mina proffered to the gallant victor. Amongst that, the victor ludorum shall be crowned with the petty title of ‘The Kaedrini Lionheart’.

Nearing Night:

Everything will be coming to an end at this point, but fear not, as the excitement will only grow into the day’s end. A freshly thought out competition will be taking place in honour of the Imperial State Navy and their recently constructed port. It will consist of both archery and boating, a challenging task and the deciding factor will undoubtedly be teamwork. Two people will be assigned as a team per boat, in which they will compete against others for the fastest time in a race. Along the way posts within the water will be set up with troublesome targets, you may only proceed in the race once said target has been hit. The victors will receive a mina prize of 2000 mina and will have their portraits painted, depicting their victory, to be hung inside one of the halls inside of the Port.

To conclude in all, we hope to see each and every person reading this missive in attendance on the day of the event. Bringing numbers and activity to the once forgotten province will without doubt bring further strength and glory to the Empire. So to repeat, join the Commonwealth on this day of celebration and carouse til the night gives out.

To relevant persons to which this might pertain or interest,

Given the recent onslaught of Inferi forces in the Korvassa, it is the foremost desire of the Governor-General and his second, the Lieutenant-Governor General, to provide what we can to our great Holy Orenian Empire. It is the mission of our Commonwealth to summon any willing and good-willed mage to the halls of the Varoche Palace, to stand for interview and consideration as our Court Mage and magic adviser.

Given the supernatural element of our demonic enemy, the threat against our Empire is too great to leave only to those who understand martial combat. It is our hope that such an adviser will prove invaluable, aiding in our own investigation into these matters to eventually contribute to the greater-Imperial Cabinet’s collective knowledge. OUR TIME, OUR OREN

To my most beloved Commonwealth,

Here and now, is yet another moment in our lives where we will make our history. Where our actions in the coming saint’s years will be what is embroidered onto our great Tapestry of Man. As Orenians, it is our inherent duty to protect our fellow man and woman, our brothers and sisters in life and in arms. It is this affection and passion for each other that we must grasp tight in our hands, especially during these times where we face an uncertain and demonic enemy.

With the fervent sense of duty and love that you have for your fellow Imperial countrymen, and for Commonwealth that you call your home, I ask you now, to put forth what you can to assure a brighter future for all of us. Be it tending the fields for rations, mining the tunnels of Mont. Saint Catherine for metals to make weaponry, or enlisting within the 3^rd Brigade or our impending Imperial Navy. These are only some of the ways in which you can show your patriotism and, more importantly, your desire for a long and lasting life.

I cannot reassure you that these Inferi and their horde will not bring harm to Arcas, and I cannot say that their shadowed menace will not reach the borders of our Imperium. But we must face them as a united force, else wise we will allow them to  snuff us out. With our armies, navy, and comradery, we will face down these demons and turn them back, for we cannot risk to do otherwise.

I am young, not trained in the ways of sword and shield and lance. A woman made for words and administration, I must use what I can to contribute how I can. I am a daughter of Oren, as much as I am the daughter of the House of Helvets. My grandsire, Peter III, and my aunt the Princess Imperial are leading the charge against these vicious and murderous forces, and thus I will follow their lead as I must. As is my duty, as an Orenian, in a position of leadership.

I will not force you to take up that which does not comfort you or disrupts your way of life, but in a way, the potential outcome of this conflict, if we’re not proactive, will disrupt all lives across our Empire. Till the fields, smith the weapons, ties the knots on your galleys, and stand with a united humanity. Or we will all perish, and our lives will have been for nothing.

With the retirement of the Count of Rochefort as the Lieutenant-General of Kaedrin, a replacement must be found in order to continue the business of our Commonwealth’s day-to-day running. It is the desire of the former-Lieutenant to appoint the Lady Lorena Helvets to this position, to be confirmed by the Governor-General with the powers granted to him by His Majesty, the King of Kaedrin.

Given her education in administration and great love for the people of the Commonwealth, the choosing of Lady Lorena Helvets to serve as Lieutenant-Governor will surely see a renewed life brought to His Majesty’s kingdom. We put our full faith in her service and assistance under the Governor-General of Kaedrin.
