The rules should be clear, concise and at most 15-20 lines long. If people can't come to a conclusion in combat they should leave eachother be. If a player routinely becomes a problem or uses this policy to avoid conflict at the benefit of their character that would fall under power-gaming.

 

Make things clear, give players some autonomy and lead by example. (Please!)

As a person who played on every iteration of LotC, I don’t believe the failings of this map is to do with lack of unique terrain (look at Aegis it was literally a vanilla map) but a lack of interactivity. Since coming back into this map I’ve only ever felt like visitors to this world with little agency. This was improved after spending my first month gaining entrance into Sutica, Rentatus, and Hefrumm and I started to enjoy my times spent in these locations as I carved out my place in them, making them feel as homes.
However it became apparent it’s very hard to interact with your environment outside of your bubble. The Jungle island an example, I tried incredibly hard to be invested in that location along with the swamp, and hats off to the ET’s that tried to push them. But it was an act of pulling fingernails to truely invest in exploring outside as it required organising often days in advance to be babysat in a location you ultimately could do very little with.

If a player doesn't feel l like they can interact with the world or have any agency their environment, they are going to have lacklustre time.

I've found the actual map design of each map has actually affected how the game has played, and find the current map is fundamentally flawed and isn't worth restoring.
Personally I've always enjoyed Athera sized maps but think the plot system is what ended up kneecapping the map (this is coming from someone who made full use of it and owned well over a dozen plots)

We've learnt a lot of things in the last 5 years as a community, map design is not one of them

Nice graphs. I still blame it on bad map design resulting in a dead feeling world. As a low traffic timezone user (Australian, though have lived in US, EU and AUS time zones so have experience with all LotC traffic times) I'm quite used to spending hours on LotC with player bases of 4-10 users logged in.
Athera had it's problems, especially with plot management, but its size and straightforward layout far better suited LotC community.

Athera with 5 players felt more alive than both Vailor and whatever this map is called with 100 users.
