  1. The Vigilant of Resolve sat within his study and peered down at the missive, reading of the failures of his elven "kin" in disgust. "Ever the weak." Shaking his head, he set the paper into the fire. "Let their meek display kindle the wills of the strong."

  2. The Vigilant of Resolve set the parchment down upon his desk. "Our sanctity has been breached, our creed...tainted." Eying the ornate ritual dagger, his gaze drifted up to the dragon skull that hang upon his wall, divine purpose rang in his voice. "It must be cleansed."

    Trial 1: BIRTH

It had been long since the green-eyed elf had to care for another living creature. Nonetheless, his devotion to Wyrvun was deep and unwavering. No task was beyond Krenanteon if it meant an ascension in his divinity, a closer relation to the deity that had, in his eyes, brought the snow elves to a purity beyond compare. This was his chance to lead as a religious example, to preach the righteous path as Wyrvun truly intended. So he would set forth on this path, venturing into the wilderness with virtue and purpose to find a hatchling he could raise as his own. - The sun rose and fell in cycles, but no sign of new life nor cry of foster could be heard, nothing but the chilled familiar air of his native Fenn. Until a new perception emerged, another that was familiar to him; the putrid, rotting stench of a corpse. The rot was fresh, from what he could tell. While it could not be farther from what he was looking for, this Stolt was a man of medicine and science, and a body recently expired was a body to be researched. - To his surprise, he was not the first to find it. Beside the form of an ‘ame, unsuited to the harsh nature of Fenn, loomed a large vulture and its chick. The mother, scavenging for food, took what flesh it could from the body and flew off, gliding away into the frosty mist, leaving behind the young bird. Kren moved slowly towards, and bundled it in his arms “...a sign from Wyrvun.” He nodded. “You shall be Enoch.”

    Trial 2: PEACE

“Fascinating…utterly fascinating.” He whispered to himself in a giddy bewilderment. His blood pooling to his head, bringing a mild dizziness to his gaze as he hung inverted from a large tree, watching two ‘ame bickering wildly down beneath him. Clutching his journal tightly as not to drop it, he did his best to jot down a few scribbles, the quill functioning poorly upside down. Raised voices echoed up the tree as their exaggerated banter caused the branches to tremble. He wrote down every movement, every flinch, every non-lexical utterance that spat from their mouths. This was exciting. This was groundbreaking. So many truths to be found, hitherto unknown to the academic world, things that the ‘ame kept close to their chest and locked away from the eyes and ears of outsiders. But his eyes and ears were hidden, immersed in heavy foliage to finally witness the ‘ame world with candid intent. Truth will out. All that remained was a title for its publication. Something meaningful, something that would captivate the minds of the people. “...Beneath..the Bark.” he uttered quietly.

    Trial 3: WAR

The amber light of the dawn glistened upon the fresh snow blanketed before him as he followed the trail of paw marks through the forest. Leading to a small valley that lay below an icy cavern, he rummaged through his satchel until he withdrew an odd egg, bespeckled in a pale green. Cracking it and setting it upon the snow, he retreated to a nearby bushel. The aroma began to drift and the tall Mali’Fenn waited, arrow nocked. Patiently he sat, until a flicker of black spots moved out from the cave. The leopard slowly descended, following the scent that the egg let off. As it reached the egg and began to investigate, Kren slowly raised himself, bowstring stretched. His emerald eye fixed upon the snow leopard’s head, he let loose the arrow. It sank into the cat’s skull with swift precision and a cry from the beast. Dying, the feline looked up to its killer and charged with fury. As Kren looked on in terror, it leaped viciously, clenching its jaws upon his leg in its final seconds of vitality. Knocked aback, he looked down at the lifeless creature in relief before uttering a few words to Wyrvun and removing its pelt.

    Trial 4: DEATH

The last rays of the sun's light crested over the mountain tops as the chill of the frosted lake creeped up his legs, into his chest. Wyrvun’s judgement lay upon him, and no weakness could be shown. He was a man of strong will, and standing before the gates of Fin’ciwn, he would prove his zeal. As the cold gripped his flesh, his mind fought against it, determined to hold onto consciousness for as long as his mortal vessel would enable. Long after the last licks of light faded beyond the horizon, and the pale moon took its place in the sky, reflecting upon the dark pool, the tall elf began to fade into darkness. His blood slowed and his body numb, he finally succumbed to the cold, collapsing into the icy deep. An impalpable mist of white thrashed about him. Nothing could be seen but pale silhouettes passing within the violent torrent of snow. A single figure approached, and from the blizzard a message resounded, as if the winds whirled in accordance to its words. “One man’s life or death were but a small price to pay for the acquirement of knowledge which I sought, for the dominion I should acquire.” He awoke a concerning amount of time later, next to the fire.

    Trial 5: RESOLVE

A deep forgotten tincture, a remnant wisp of the heretical magics performed upon her lay dormant beneath her skin. To be healed by such a corrupted force was, in itself, a terrible crime against the gift that had been bestowed upon us. But to leave such a taint would be to insult Wyrvun himself. To besmirch his name each and every day it remains. For any Fenn, this would be unforgivable. For an Archvigilant, it could not be allowed. There was only one thing for it, to be cut out, root and stem. Deep within the earth, away from the sun and the snow, away from the eyes and words of men of lesser wills, Kren gazed at the ornate blade in his hand. Inset with red stones, it was sharper than any scalpel he possessed. It was a blade of not surgical, but religious, intent. Thus, the intent of the surgeon must be the same. He wished no ill will upon her, but the sin must be cast out. Where the body had been healed with blasphemous sorcery, he would unheal with Wyrvunic intent. Her suffering would be but a small cost for the salvation that would be achieved.

    VIGILANCE

The blade, dripping with the blood of renewal, laid beside Krenanteon as he kneeled upon the frigid stone. Deep cuts lined Kindrel’s cheek. She stood before him in atonement, bearing witness. There, amidst the entombed bodies of Fenn’s past, he swore his moniker.

“When measure fails and fights devolve,
Where meek men pause, my soul absolves.
    ‘Pon fervor only, conflicts solve.
In end I triumph, through cruel resolve.”

Thus rises the Vigilant of Resolve.

Beneath the Bark - An Anthropological Study of Wood Elves

    Forward

“To study the world is the joy of living.” Those are the words of yours truly, the renowned writer and intellectual Krenanteon Stolt’aroloth. While the pursuit of knowledge, both deep and near, is my goal within this strange mortal coil, there is one topic which has always fascinated me beyond all. Since my days as a small icicle, the nature of the primitive wood elf filled my cranium with bountiful curiosity. Thus, five years ago I decided to finally study these puzzling creatures in a depth that previously lay undiscovered by outsiders of their culture. Living among the wood elves and deeply immersing myself within their habitat, I observed them closely. What follows are my findings.

    Physiology

The wood elf  is a “creature” whose name is apt. Born from seed, these nymphs of the forest bloom under the supple teat of the sun, relying on the blue milk of the earth to blossom away from the muck in which they were implanted. This development process of the Mali’ame, however, like that of most primitive beings, is a slow one. It begins with the growth of seed within a male ‘ame’s hair. Each spring, there is a chance of such phenomena occurring. However, being (debatably) of the mali taxonomy, and so cursed with infertility, this phenomena is one that is exceedingly rare. If, by slim chance, a wood elf of the male variety does find an earthy kernel within his plumage, he treats it with care until reaching a ripened white state. This is a crucial stage that often ends in catastrophe, given the reckless demeanor of the male wood elf. Although, once in a green moon, the seed is not treated haphazardly and is able to ripen. When this occurs, the male plucks the pearl from its brown, keratinous branch and begins his search for a suitable “mate”. If a female is willing, she takes the seed and places it in her belly button. The seed then sits in this cavern for a number of days, given a regular watering from its new host until it finally germinates. Once the initial sprouting has started, the seed is fished out of the belly button and is brought to a suitable place in the soil. Typically, wood elven parents elect to plant their seed within their home garden. It is here that the final, and longest, stage of their development occurs. Growing in the dirt, the mother and father care for the seedling, giving it ample water and sunlight. Through such gentle nurture, they sprout what the layman would define as elven features. After many months, pointy ears, pointy faces, and all manner of limbs bud from their spriggy stem, coming to resemble the typical wood elven form that we all know.

But what lies within this elvenoid exterior that we claim to know? While many a critter of the realm gain their vitality through the thick red ichor most commonly referred to as “blood,” the same cannot be said of our woodland “kin.” Like all trees born of seed and dirt, the wood elf is composed of wood. This, however, does not mean that he or she is less vulnerable. They too contain bits on the inside that need to stay on the inside. Planty fibers drive their movements and organs of cellulose maintain a natural order within their husk. However, none of these internals can function without the life-giving sap that runs through their bodies. This sweet, viscous syrup pools through the spongy mesophyll, pumping in and out of their vital sacs, making the bodies function (application of this syrup upon breakfast cakes is at the reader's own discretion). As it must fill all areas of their form, the sap flows close to the surface of the wood elf, allowing them to be easily tapped. Much like blood, loss of this syrup proves catastrophic to the wood elf, leading to a quick death. Thus, the vitality of the wood elf is balanced on the edge of a knife by this arguably delectable fluid.

    Behavior

Being a creature of wood and bark, the Mali’ame is highly susceptible to most types of damage. Sharp and pointy objects like swords and axes cleave easily through their oaken flesh. This is commonly demonstrated by the lumbermen of the forest. Moreover, if not properly hydrated, the wood elf is highly flammable, able to combust in seconds when in the close presence of fire (See appendices for data). For these reasons, the wood elf has a deep and innate sense of cowardice which compels him or her to nearly always run away from a fight.

However, this is not always possible. At times, a woodland sprite may have no choice, and in deep internal conflict with its own nature, it must engage in battle. Given that loss of bodily fluids is a concern, it is starkly important that animals have the ability to defend themselves. The elves of the trees, however, are composed of dense, woody fibers that are stiff and difficult to move. Thus, they are neither agile nor quick on their feet, holding a significant disadvantage on the battlefield as a result. While this dense limb composition may allow them to lift a weapon with relative ease, the stiffness of their woody tissue does not allow them to move the blade effectively. For this reason, a wood elf will never engage in a duel with another race of mali, choosing only to fight in great numbers to make up for their significant lack of skill.

Similarly, the weak physical makeup of the wood elf has resulted in the development of a constant state of hiding. These wood nymphs lock themselves away in shambling villages barricaded by mountains and trees, keeping their gates under lock and key at all times due to their constant fear of the vastly superior beings of the continent. This cowardly and distrustful behavior, however, has seemingly made them a bigger, and more sporting, target for said beings.

    Religion and Druidism

In terms of religious affairs, the ‘ame people worship a grouping of fictitious and blasphemous “gods” known as the Aspects. In the name of these false idols, they carve large wooden statues and conduct strange rites atop tall hills. Strangely, despite the wood elves’ innate weakness to flame, part of these rites involves the construction of large pyres in which to dance around in a primal fashion. In groups, they skip and bound in circles round the fire, chanting strange phrases.

While in Elvenesse, I witnessed several ‘ame perish to these fires amidst their dance rituals, and it remains unclear as to whether this is an intentional (albeit in vain given the falsities of their “gods”) sacrifice, or whether they simply jigged too near to the flames. A foolish move for a foolish people.

The worship of these so-called gods holds close ties to a heathen magical practice known most commonly as “Druidism.” These druids adopt the primal rites of the Aspects in the use of heretical ceremonies as a means of conjuring magics, hexes, jinxes, obeahs, voodoos, hoodoos, snoodoos, and the like. Given the falsity of their deities, the enchantments of such wiccans are likely little more than parlour tricks. However, the intent of any magical rite or incantation is a foul thing that breeds foul things. Thus, caution should be warranted around those that practice such depravities.

    Language

While today it is true that these “elves” speak the same tongue as their “fellow” mali, through careful and stunningly accurate observation, it became inescapably evident that there is more. Before adopting the dialect of higher beings, the Mali’ame developed a form of speaking that was entirely their own. After months of deep immersion into their twiggen culture, I began to see flickers and glimpses of this communication, which can only be described here as primitive, insulting, and a bit rhombus. Hiding from the cover of the scratchy underbrush, I was fortunate enough to witness an “interaction” between two “elves” of the woodland complexion, the like of which I doubt has been seen by a more advanced creature for thousands of years. What I witnessed appeared to be an exchange of odd, guttural grunts that were highly offensive to the ear. It was not for many moments until it became apparent that these grunts actually held some form of “meaning” behind them. Not only that, but the language seemed to stem beyond mere throated yarps, and in fact, included motions of the hands and feet. Strange combinations of tapping, kicking, and crossing of limbs seemed to coincide with brash facial emotions, in tide with specific grunts and gurgles from deep within their woodpipes. An oral/visual language form! I have taken to calling it “barking.”

What follows are interpretative meanings of the observed expressions:

    Hello:              “Hgurgh!” + wave

    Goodbye:       “Ggurgh!” + wave

Yes:                  “Ygurgh!” + nodding + clapping hands

No:                   “Ngurgh!” + shaking head violently + stomping + optional slapping of peer

Tree:                “Tgurgh!” + wide eyes + waving of both hands up + widened stance

Leaf:                “Lgurgh!” + wiggly fingers tapping forearm

Fruit:               “Fgurgh!” + Salivation + Enclosed fists clanking together

Banana:          “Bgurgh!” + look of excitement + wide eyes + pounding chest

  5. Krenanteon Stolt’aroloth looked out upon the snow-capped peaks of Fenn after reading the last words of his liege, looking solemn but shedding no tear. It would not be the last time he would see his dear friend. The emerald-eyed elf looked down upon the old Stolt’aroloth map that he had shown his Prince, the location of one gleaming frosted lake. A small smirk fell upon his face as he locked it away in the Stolt library and called out to his grandfather and brother, ”I think it’s time for a trip.”

From the gatehouse is dangled a singular body, secured to the stone by rope and noose, abandoned to drift aimlessly at the mercy of the whims of Wyrvun’s breath. The corpse is left in naught but rags, strips of flesh dangling from its frame, as though hewn apart by a dozen steel blades. Nailed into the decaying flesh of the would-be assassin is a simple wooden sign - secured by a singular spent crossbow bolt through wood and flesh - with two neat words etched upon it.

    “Try again.”

  16. The Evar'okarn

    Preservers of the Oasis

    Overview

The Evar’okarn is often described as the pillar of the Fennic government, and that which keeps the mechanisms of the state running from day to day. These functionaries tend to a number of professional matters that call for work of a more academic nature, and deal with core functions of the Princedom. Due to the nature of their work, those who wish to enlist in the Evar’okarn are subject to a high degree of vetting for competence, dedication, and loyalty. The Evar’okarn has three distinct branches, each led by their own respective Grand Council member. The rank structure is universal between the branches. Each branch is led by a Grand Councilor, its regular members are generally referred to by the rank of Functionary, and its newest members are referred to as Applicants. It is recommended that Applicants only pursue one branch of the Evar’okarn, though on occasion entrance into more than one may be permitted. It is recommended that only those who have ample experience in the Princedom apply.

Justiciars - Evar’tirn, Preservers of the Law

The Justiciars are a distinct breed of academic within Fenn. A hybrid of scholars and judges, Justiciars engage in research and scholarly pursuits, whilst simultaneously serving as the interpreters of Fennic law and arbiters of disputes within the Princedom. Thus, they are expected to be highly educated. The Justiciars serve these dual roles due to the roles’ shared necessity for intellectual rigor, and the fact that the experiences gained in each only serve to benefit one’s abilities in the other. It is the duty of Justiciars to know the law, suggest changes to the law, and to interpret the law in the courtroom in arbitration over Fennic trials. The Justiciars are also integral for maintaining the Princedoms’ records and histories, including those of bloodlines - giving them the duty of aiding Snow Elves in discovering what bloodline they may belong to. If interested in joining, applicants must undergo an interview with the High Justiciar. Led by the High Justiciar, the ‘Functionary’ equivalent is simply known as a ‘Justiciar’, and those who are new or in trial for the branch are known as ‘Justiciar-Applicants’.

Diplomats - Evar’hileian, Preservers of the Peace

The Diplomats are the face of the Fennic Nation, bridging the political gap between the icy elven kingdom and far away lands. These consuls act in the High Emissary’s stay, meeting with other nations, organizations, or parties when he is unable to do so. Furthermore, it is their duty to aid in the creation of diplomatic amendments, and general overview of Fennic foreign policy. For these reasons, Evar’hileia are chosen based on their political experience, loyalty to the nation, sense of propriety, and a degree of charm. If interested in joining, applicants for the Diplomatic Corps must also arrange an interview with the High Emissary of Fenn as a supplement to their application. The ‘Functionary’ rank is known as ‘Diplomat’, and those who are new or in trial for the corps are simply referred to as ‘Diplomat-Applicants’. These applicants are able to serve as aides to the High Emissary until becoming a full Diplomat.

Stewards - Evar’lin, Preservers of the Home

The Stewards are an integral part of the Princedom’s inner mechanisms. It is their duty to oversee all housing within the Princedom, but also, to see to it that those who travel to join the Princedom are adequately settled into society. The Stewards oversee evictions, taxes, house distribution, shop distribution, and other matters related to the Princedom’s vital infrastructure. If interested in joining, applicants must undergo an interview with the High Steward. They are led by the High Steward, with the ‘Functionary’ equivalent being ‘Steward’, and those who have not yet received training as Stewards being ‘Steward-Applicants’.

By royal decree of His Majesty, Grand Prince Aelthir Tundrak II of the Princedom of Fenn,

The Princedom of Fenn hereby offers to open its doors to all refugees of the destruction of Haelun’or. Houses can be provided, free of both charge and tax, in order to resettle any occupants of the Haelun’orian State who now find themselves without a home. These accommodations may be either temporary or permanent in nature, as any who choose to remain within the Princedom will be accorded full citizenship and membership within Fennic society.

Healers of the Fennic Clinic are on standby to treat any wounded, and provide amenities such as medicine and food to those in need. We hope that those in need will consider making the trip south, and those who require an Ivae’fenn escort shall be granted one upon the sending of a bird.

Long have the Snow Elves and High Elves maintained cordial relations, and it is only proper that we extend such offers to our wayward High Elven cousins.

    Ito nae elannil’wyrvun,

    Krenanteon Stolt’aroloth

High Emissary of the Princedom of Fenn
