Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

The Hou-Zi are an awakened race, originating from primates in the jungles of Asul. Their enlightener, Metzli, is a daemon that was looking to experiment with creating a loyal, sentient, servant race. Her first attempt was creating the Hou-Zi, starting by transforming an alpha monkey into Hou-Shen the Monkey King. Metzli decreed that as long as the Hou-Zi would serve her they would be showered with prosperity.

The Hou-Zi expanded rapidly after their sentience was unlocked. They advanced quickly in their technologies and built Jing Taiyun, a lavish capital city, relatively quickly. Following meditation and a command from Metzli herself, Hou-Shen ordered the expansion beyond the jungles of Asul and the Hou-Zi began their conquest. All of the Hou-Zi’s important wars were with the elves, as the elves were the other prominent race at the time. The Hou-Zi would wage wars of the years, with the common strategy of rushing centers of population and overwhelming them. They experienced success in taking of Asul and were able to expand from there as well. Ultimately the expansion ended due to two major defeats and a peace accord was reached. 

Ultimately war rekindled again 100 years later, but Hou-Shen fell in the battle to take Malinor. His death shattered the Hou-Zi, killing their momentum in the war and resulting in the loss of all lands except Asul. The old god Poison saw his chance and ruined their civilisation, causing a diaspora of the monkey people into the jungles. 

Metzli reincarnated Hou-Shen, which led to a revival of the society. Jing Taiyun was rebuilt and the empire was beginning to grow again. They attempted war with elves, now divided into their respective sub races, and saw initial success. But each division of elves had their own tactics to repel the invaders. An alliance of the elves and a grand battle on the island of Malin again sealed the fate of the Hou-Zi.

After this, the Hou-Zi clung to the hedonism and riches that were once a pillar of their society. In-fighting due to a lack of resources led them on a downward spiral, resulting in the disappearance of Hou-Shen and Poison yet again coming in to break down the remains of the Hou-Zi empire.

In the generations to come Hou-Zi would revert to more instinctual/tribal ways, living off the jungle that initially supported them. They still held great importance on wealth and rare objects such as jade, though these were circulating nowhere nearly as frequently as in years past. They would form small villages and stick together, more isolationist than not.

While Metzli was their awakener, the Hou-Zi of the past revered their king Hou-Shen. Those Hou-Zi that do practice religion center it around Hou-Shen as opposed to Metzli, as Metzli is known as the Doombringer. 

The Hou-Zi’s ancient language is gone, forgotten. Some phrases still float around but the language itself along with its character system is mostly gone. 

This character is a Fei-Zu variety of Hou-Zi.

Fei-Zu stand the smallest in stature among the varieties of Hou-Zi. They are typically smaller and more agile, usually standing between 5 and 6 feet tall. Lifespan is 150-250 years. Their fur is quite colorful, sporting a wide range of exotic colours with contrasting facial fur to match.
