The Ichorian Trial of Survival

Through the eyes of Caitlin

The details might be a bit blurry, but I tried my best to remember everything as it happened, writing them down here. There isn’t much to say, it wasn’t the harshest task I’d faced so far, but definitely the most lengthy, though it took a bit of a toll on my body in the long term.

First month:

I ditched all equipment, clothes, tools and anything else that might conflict with the trial’s rules. Though I did grow some moss onto my back beforehand, hoping to keep my injuries closed long enough. I decided to go to a jungle, near Krugmar and Talon’s Port, since I was at least quite familiar with both the flora and the fauna. Not exactly the same as in Arcas, but it was close enough. Water as my priority, I spent my first couple days seeking a river, setting up camp nearby a small stream, using large leaves as cover, feeding off roots growing beside the stream, berries, and any insects I could manage to catch without too much movement..

Second month:

So the wounds had closed at this point, and I was free to move around freely, using this to actually climb up some trees, which was a pleasant improvement. The fruits and eggs before out of reach were now in my hand and massively improved any problems I might have had with food earlier. I’d also gotten to work on some crude tools, a sharp rock and something akin to a bola, which was just two rocks tied to several vines I’d braided together. My shelter also improved, from just leaves to tying sticks together into some brittle but usable walls. It took a couple days, but at last I had a stable structure to keep rain out, and dry ground to sleep on.

Third month:

Well, there isn’t much to say about the third month, I mainly just foraged food and meditated, though I did plant some of my mushrooms around the routes I normally took, and after a couple days, I had clear markers so I wouldn’t lose myself. Turns out I’m terrible at throwing bolas, and I haven’t been able to hit anything but foliage and trunks. After weeks of failure, I tossed the idea and just sharpened more rocks, maybe I could use them for other tools.

Fourth month:

I don’t know how this escaped my thoughts, but I finally remembered I could make traps! I made them in my first trial of survival, I don’t know how it hadn’t crossed my mind. Trapping and killing small animals, be it lizards or mammals, was a welcome addition to the diet. I didn’t have anything to cook it with, but the taste of raw meat had become familiar a long time ago, so it wasn’t an issue. Fur was a nice addition, since I now could make some blankets to lay on, and the bones made for good needles! The rocks ended up just laying in the shelter, I only really used them to replace the previous ones I used once they went blunt or broke. 

Fifth month:

I saw a couple hunters during one of my foraging trips, so I decided to back off. I wasn’t sure how interacting with others would affect the trial, so I’d rather just play it safe. Though the idea of hunting bigger animals did seem like something exciting, so I began to sharpen sticks, digging out a few small pits near places I often saw boars roam, and placed the sticks at the bottom, covering the top with a few leaves and dirt before placing some bait on them. Was just a matter of time now.

Sixth month:

A couple weeks later and not a single boar had fallen for the trap. In fact, I almost forgot the location myself and barely avoided falling in! I just dismantled the traps and stuck to the smaller ones. While not giving as big of prey, it sufficed. I’m quite sure I’d lost any weight my body could afford to lose at this point, but it wasn’t a problem of starvation. I suppose a diet of raw meat, fruits and vegetables can do that. Boredom became even more of an issue as I began to climb higher and higher, seeking the highest canopy I could find, looking over the rolling green oceans of leaves.

Seventh month:

It began raining one day, and it didn’t stop. The stream I stayed by ended up overflowing and I had to move further up. It was quite upsetting, as I’d sunk a lot of time into it, but with the small amount of time I had left, I felt like rebuilding it wasn’t worth the while, so I just spent the next few nights between branches of larger trees, using a blanket made of all the furs I’d skinned. The final days passed in a flash, and before I knew it, time was up. I dismantled any traps that were still active and marched out of the jungle, the trip itself taking around four days. But at last I reached home, and the comfort of my own bed!

My body had changed quite a bit by the time I was done. Skinnier, but leaner. I felt more energetic, though also lonely. Isolating oneself for an entire year was probably the worst part, since I quite enjoy chatting with people.

Briefly explain the lore behind this construct or creature:

Saprophytes are a subrace of Epiphytes, a race of humanoid lifeforms who were once descendants, yet had their bodies transformed into a plant-like matter through a certain interaction with a fae plant. The appearance each Epiphyte takes on varies greatly, depending on the plant or fungi they take share a bond with. Most physical features from before the transformation are kept, yet some mayor alterations do occur, such as leaves or other parts growing upon their bodies. This, however, does not give any physical advantages. They have a life cycle of around a century, perishing and being reborn from a singular new fae seed. Epiphytes share a strong connection to their respective plant and are able to communicate with them. Such connection can affect the well-being of the other, should one be ill. This does not work for any other plants, be it of the same or other kind.

Ilkala

History

 A newly born clan, founded by the youngest sibling of the Ilkala brothers. A clan, hoping to prove itself in loyalty and efficiency, to the rest of the Ashen Folk, to forge a name for itself amongst the great clans who have preceded it.

Formed in 1698, the eldest of Valus Ilkala's offspring, Valus Ilkala II, took charge of the family of miners, the Ilkala. The Ilkala, although having a simple job, did it's best, hoping to thrive amongst the families of Vira'ker. Supplying and selling iron was a humble start, yet soon become a thriving industry for them. Yet Vira'ker fell, splitting the remaining members up, some fleeing to Sutica, others to Llyria. In the end, Valus Ilkala II became lost at sea, with the second in line, Vanautras Ilkala, missing. The last remaining brother, Ryo Ilkala, decided to take up the mantle and restore the family once more, starting in Asimu'lei, where the simple mining industry began to expand, reaching out towards other occupations, such as smithing and jeweling amongst other trades, slowly becoming a clan of no longer miners, but of merchants and traders, with nimble minds, and even nimbler fingers.

The Ilkala family, now a clan, set their eyes towards Renelia, using their honed skills as miners and artisans to aid in the construction of Renelia. Having established a place amongst the great clans, the Ilkala now turned their heads towards other business opportunities, such as tavern keeping, taking charge of the Renelian tavern.

Appearance

The Ilkala gaze with crimson and violet eyes, yet hues of blue are not uncommon. Manes of silvery white hair resting upon their heads. Being bulky in size due to the efforts of moving goods and swinging a pickaxe, they may seem intimidating, yet most wear a warm smile upon their gaze, a soft tone when speaking, being willing to risk their very lives for the good of their family, and the good of 'ker kind.

Workships

The Ilkala offer praise to Luara, spirit of the moon, as any ‘ker of good standing should, Bregthar, spirit of the earth, for their love of the underground is immense, and Kulthark, spirit of metal. If the Ilkala love one thing more than the underground, it’s its riches.
