    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Using information one has gained outside of roleplay to influence their character's in-game thoughts or actions. An example I have seen : A greedy player stating they hurry into a dungeon's room to loot the chest another character has discovered discreetly. Since they learned about the chest's existence out of game, while their character was occupied in another area of the dungeon, running to open that chest would be considered metagaming.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Playing one's character in a way that is overly powerful, ignoring realistic limitations or detriments of that character. An example I have seen : A character has been affected with a curse as a direct result of their actions. Their next move is to root in their bag and remove a distinct magic item, one they claim conveniently removes the effects of that particular curse, despite never mentioning said item before. Since this item was brought into existence only to negate a negative effect the character has gained, this would be considered powergaming.
