Merula looks the man up and down, examining his clothes before responding.

"I'm here to study. Adventure is for people with death wishes, wealth is for people with greed, and elevation is for people I have no interest in speaking to. Since you're here though, I could use some direction. I'm looking for a teaching mage, could you direct me to where I might find one?"

She knew exactly where she was going, and didn't need direction. She planned this trip well in advance, but getting to know someone and making a potential friend might not be such a bad idea.
