You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Vortigern turns sharply towards the voice of the old hag, swiftly unsheathing his sword in anticipation. He hesitates a brief moment as he realizes there is no threat here. He stabs his sword into the dirt, slowly lowering himself into a seat. “You want to know my story? … That is a long unforgiving tale.”
“I was born a bastard. Left orphaned by my ‘parents’ who were to ashamed of me; they cared too much about their reputations. I was found, as only a baby, by a group of independent noble Paladins. Gregor- The one who raised me- treated me like a son. Gave me the best training, too. On my first pillage, I was told I would be liberating a village of those possessed by an evil demon. In the midst of the raid, I found out they were not possessed at all. They were simply Orcs who believed in a different faith…”
“I confronted my ‘father’, or so I called him at the time, and he stabbed me. Left me crucified at the center of the burning village… that’s where I felt that I had heard the voice of a real god reaching out to me…”
