Rainheart smiled, politely but cautiously. “I’m here because I’ve heard that the country beyond is beautiful and wild, and suited to adventure. Do you know where I could purchase a map of the area?” He met the stranger’s gaze calmly, waiting for what he assumed would be a sales-pitch, a recruitment effort, or just an old-fashioned con. “There are precious few who offer unsolicited help to strangers without something of their own to gain,” he thought, “and it’s unlikely I’ve stumbled across something as rare as an honest man.” Reflexively, he put his hand in his pocket to ensure nothing was lifted out of it.
