How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: metagaming is the excessive use of player knowledge and not OC knowledge. The knowledge a player may have and know isnt always something a character may know like a player may know the name of a oc but unless the oc is famous the character of the player wont. Another example of heaver encounter breaking metagaming is using the player knowledge of a player weakness that their oc wouldnt know and using it in battle or otherwise in the first meetings of the ocs.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming or as i know it "Godmodding" is the act of forcing an unavoidable attack on a oc that couldve fought back. For example say i was fighting with someone and i say "I bring my bow up and block the attack and attempt to kick [Insert opponent name here] away." and they respond with "I take out my second sword and cut off their foot as it comes towards me and throw them to the ground."
