You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Startled by the elderly woman, Eragon hesitated to oblige to her request. He had begun to believe this town to be abandoned, and her unexpected appearance had made him uneasy. Eventually, mostly due to his polite nature not allowing him to simply leave, he responded. "I do not see how you could have been expecting me, as I've not sent any messages ahead of myself . . . although I suppose a swift retelling of what I've gone through these past few weeks could not hurt." He made his way over to the small cushion, trying and failing to get comfortable. He cleared his throat before continuing. "I've lived on a small farm with my mother and uncle for as long as I can remember, up until about a fortnight ago. The town we lived near had been attacked by raiders, and soon after they finished ransacking the place, they began making their way down the road towards our farm. Mother and Uncle decided to use themselves as a distraction in order for me to escape. They promised me they'd meet with me later, at a clearing in the nearby forest . . . they never arrived. I fled the area, my only belongings being my beloved hunting bow and a pack of supplies my uncle prepared for me." Tears began to well up in his eyes, though he quickly wiped them away. "Now, ma'am, could you please direct me to somewhere I could stay the night? I would appreciate it greatly, as I've not had an ounce of peaceful rest for my entire journey, and I fear that my tiredness will soon be my downfall."
